I recently had two Giant paintings in the works, and now one of them is finished! Here is the Giantess Gunnlöð; in Norse mythology, she was tasked by her father, Suttungr, to guard the Mead of Poetry in their mountain home, Hnitbjörg. When Odin snuck in, he slept with her for three nights in exchange for three draughts of the Mead. Once he drank all of it, he turned into an eagle and flew away. As for Gunnlöð, she later bore a son, Bragi, the skaldic god of poetry.
In my fic, Gunnlöð’s time of guarding the Mead has already passed. She’s much older now and an experienced warrior; I'd say she’s around Faye’s age if Faye was still alive XDD And speaking of Faye, I like to imagine that she and Gunnlöð became fighting partners back in the day, after Gunnlöð broke free of her isolation in Hnitbjörg!
I dressed Gunnlöð in a rose-gold palette, which is how Calliope would describe her compared to Thrúd’s fiery red-gold colours. Gunnlöð is one of the more “distant” Giants in my fic; she appears later on and doesn’t have much of a prominent role, but Calliope still has some interactions with her and learns more about her story.

I'm not sure if I'll be writing any more for Odin in my current project, barring the Chthonic Hymn To Odin, but here's the last addition to my ongoing project

Note
In Crawford's video last week re strange tales, he said Odin must have shapeshifted into a younger and more attractive version of himself in order to seduce Gunnlod because his usual form wouldn't have been a fair exchange for the mead of poetry, which I have a feeling you have Opinions on lol
Maybe Gunnlod just has a thing for silver foxes!

Until Dust Chapter 86: Gunnlod
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3,358
Summary: Finally Loki gets the chance to meet one of your friends.
Warnings: Story is Rated R.
The place had always been full of life. The flickering candlelight of the chandelier lit the place with the aid of the occasional covered lantern. The heat that rose from both them, and the inebriated patrons warmed the wooden walls just enough that one could smell the rich sent of oak from the moment they entered. When paired with the sweet smell of mead, the effect was somewhat like being inside a wine barrel. Tables radiated out from the tiny stage on the far wall- staggered so that all who occupied their seats could easily see whatever poor soul found themselves up on her stage.
Passing through the doors was like stepping back in time- to before your life had changed so very drastically. You found yourself hiding behind Loki’s shoulder in the hopes that you might be the one to see old friends before they saw you. A strange part of you feared they would be angry with you for not telling them you had returned home; or perhaps they might have been turned against you by any tales that had reached this far. Worse still was they fear that not a single soul would notice you had returned at all.
“It smells fantastic here.” Loki had pulled you a bit closer, leaning in so she might speak directly in your ear and be heard above the commotion. It shook you from your thoughts just enough to keep you from sinking into them too deep.
“The taste is twice as good, I assure you.”
“A regular of the venue, are you?”
You nodded. “A dear friend of mine owns it.”
“And she is our age?”
“Thereabouts.”
“Impressive.”
You laughed.  Impressive was one of many words to describe your old friend- and only half were quite as kind.
You had missed her dearly.
She would be at the bar around this hour- likely managing the surge of orders that came in the early evening. You pointed in its direction, hoping Loki’s height- and, admittedly, her sense of entitlement- might help the two of you move through the throngs with a bit more ease than normal. Thankfully she obliged. She signaled for you to hold on tightly to the back of her dress, and quickly pulled the both of you through with a level of deftness you should have expected. The two of you garnered an unkind glance or two, but it mattered little- you arrived where you wanted to be, and your dear friend what’s just where you expected.
Behind the bar was always where Gunnlod had thrived. Quick witted and frighteningly congenial, she had a talent for making customers feel as if it were a privilege to wait to be served. It did not help that she was the kind of lovely that would have allowed her to blend in with the aristocracy even if she wore nothing at all. Against her night-black skin, her unwavering smile shone like the crescent moon- her eyes bright as the stars. The dress of yellow silk she wore caught every shift of the firelight, and as she moved almost ceaselessly while at her work, it was a sight to behold. She was purely magnetic in her element-incapable of being any less than the very center of attention; a position she had more than earned.
Loki watched her intently-just as fascinated as you anticipated she would be- so you nudged her from behind. “If you want to order, you’ll have to get her attention, your highness.”  you teased.
Though she shot you an unappreciative look, it took her no time at all to flag Gunnlod down.
“Well well,-” Your friend cooed as she unwittingly greeted one of the Asgard’s Royal family. “-a new face is always a delight, but yours is especially so.” As she pressed up on her toes, she leaned forward across the bar. “Is there anything in particular you are looking for?”
“Regrettably, I am unfamiliar with what you offer.” Loki turned back to look at you, finally letting you slip out from where you hid behind her. “Darling, what would you-”
There was a few seconds between when she first laid eyes on you, and when your identity sank in- but the moment it did, Gunnlod screamed.
            “Odin’s asshole! Is that you?”

🕯️Manifesting Baby Thor and Dilf Odin🕯️
I need to see this in-canon, we get to Zeus why not Odin? He's more tolerable than that Greece horny ass
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Er- everyone is entitled to their opinion and it doesn’t matter what I say. However! Myth wise…Odin and Zeus were pretty much the same when it came to their…conquests.
Odin had many concubines as well, his hands aren’t clean either. Myth! Zeus..well yes he was in everything and anything. There isn’t much of a difference, MYTH wise. The only difference would be their wives Hera for Zeus and Frigg for Odin, Hera was of course …more hands on with Zeus’ affairs while Odin had affairs with Jord, Rindr, Gunnlod, and Grid. (Frigg wasn’t loyal either, she had a few instances with Odin’s brothers. One tale says she thought Odin was dead and sold all his shit to them. (Odin’s brothers) (Lmao 😭) he got it back though.
I could go on, but I’m not going to.
The point is Ror! Zeus and RoR! Odin are different from their mythology counter parts, RoR is LOOSELY based on their myth counterparts. RoR! Zeus hasn’t been seen with a woman this entire time, like at all. Neither has Odin. I think people like to think so because of the scene he where gets excited and Brunhilde scolds him for it. But! It wasn’t because of Brunhilde it’s because of the supposed rebellion, Zeus loves a fight/rebellion. This has been proven TWICE. On seperate occasions. Also!
Tumblr media
Out of respect, Zeus named Hercules after Hera.
((Now while we don’t the extent of their marriage, this says a lot. Because Zeus didn’t respect Hera at all! (MYTH WISE) RoR! Zeus really doesn’t have to respect Hera here either because he’s literally the strongest god in this series to date. He didn’t HAVE to do that.))
Also!
We haven’t gotten a young Odin because ODIN hasn’t went yet, he’s most likely going last. The trump card for the gods. He could go sooner but the fandom and I do too, agree that he’ll go last. The authors need that money and suspense. But! When it is his turn we’ll most likely get a younger Odin (which I pray for 💋 cause I know Odin was a handsome man)
Myth! Zeus: 25? Those are rookies numbers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime and authors have praised Zeus’…..big family. So, take that as you will. (Hermes is believed to be a full brother, which means Hermes was either adopted in like Hercules or maybe the authors will go a different route and make Hera his mother? Idk 🤷🏼‍♀️)
I like the Greek pantheon (regardless of their match record), Hell I like all the gods so far and they are trying to wipe us out 😭 .
But no, I don’t really care for myth! Zeus slander, but RoR! Zeus slander…I don’t see it. (Except for the ragnarok matches. Drag his ass) but him being horny? Haven’t seen it. Maybe in time there will be some plot twist but until then, haven’t seen it.
No RoR! Zeus slander here, if you don’t like it get off my blog. 🎀

Prayer to Loki for Inspiration
Dear Loki, help me unlock my word-hoard. Break the lock and hasp, sweet World-Breaker*, and help me find my voice. I will pour out songs of joy and praise if only I can catch the ideas as they swim by in the stream of time. Steal but a drop of that precious mead once guarded by Gunnlod and I shall build you an altar of songs and stories that will circle the world nine times over on the wind. Help me, oh dear Loki, most beloved Mischief maker and giver of strange gifts. Let us find laughter and humor in the gaffs that come in the artistic process (and typos). Join me in this quest and I shall ever sing your name. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~ I have a strong devotional relationship with Loki and a special fondness for World-Breaker for he keeps breaking the chains that bind me to a painful past and cracking open the hard shell of cynicism that I try to use to protect myself from the world, allowing the beauty of the world to get in and reminding me that I am past the awfulness of my traumas. ♥

Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Fjalarr - The Holder of the Mead of Poetry Well here we are on another ThorsDay with another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological characters.  This week it’s a thrid and final version of Fajalarr / Fajallar / Falr / Fálr / Falur / Fal / Fjalar of the Jotnar (Jötunn / Jotun / Jotunn / Jetten / Eoten / Giant mentioned in the Havamal, and Harbardsljod the Eddas.
His name translated to ‘hide’ from the Old Norse Fela’ and ‘pipe’, ‘tube’, ‘board’, ‘plank’ or most specifically ‘spearhead socket’ from the old Norse ‘Falr’, possibly by way of the Proto Germanic ‘Falhuz’ meaning ‘to hide’ or ‘to conceal’. It’s the hold at the back of a spearhead that the shaft or handle is fit into.
Given as another name for Suttungr, son of Gilling, and father Gunnlod, grandfather of Bragi, and brother to Baugi.
The use of Fajalar for Suttungr confuses the tale of the mead of peotry and the murder of Gilling and his wife, as one of the the dverg who kills them is also names Fjalar. And its use is likely some kind of mix up over time.
Suttunger discovers that after killing Kvasir and making the mead of poetry from his blood. A drink that can turn anyone into a fact knowing verse speaking and Skaldic scholar. The Dverg Fjalar and Galar kill Gilling and his wife who were visiting them, possibly to keep the existence of the mead secret. When Suttungr finds out he strands them on a rock far out to sea at low tide. expecting them to drown and be dashed on the rocks. But they beg for mercy and give hi the mead in exchange for their lives.
Eventually Odin learns of the mead, gets a job with Buagi, sneaks into Suttungr fortified home Hnitborg in three casks Bodn, Son, and Odroerir that is guarded by his Daughter Gunlodd. Odin bores a hole into the home, turns into a snake to sneak in. Odin seduces Suttungr’s daughter Gunlodd, and steals the mead of poetry from him. Transforming into an eagle to fly back to Asgard with it. Pursued by Suttungr also in the form on an eagle, due to his magic cloak of the Black Eagle. But fails to catch him.
I’ll likely write out a more full story of this when I get to the S’s and draw Suttungr again.

Have you ever codified where Gunnlod is from? The ring pommel has usually been an Irish thing to me but the rest of her gear seems more central European, and the name and tattoos ring a bit Scandinavian
Her mother is Icelandic and her father is a Frisian landed knight :3

Managed to make at least the rough versions of:
Odin
Frigg
Baldur
Hodr
Bragi
Gunnlod
Thor
Sif
Modi
Magni
Thrud
Jord
Freyja
Odr
Hnoss
Gersemi
Loki
Hel
Fenrir
Jormungand
Tyr
Now I just need to do Mimir and Idunn and decide if I want to throw in Skadi and Uller.
Then I have to through and get them all just right.

How is Gunnlod´s relathionship with her son, Bragi? The Aesir god of poetry?
Bragi doesn't show up in my fic, nor have I really thought about Gunnlod's relationship with him. The cast was getting pretty big with the Giants included so I had to stop adding in characters ^^;; Sorry, anon! Though, if Bragi was included, I imagine he and Gunnlod would be estranged, or something along those lines.

Gunnlod by Anders Zorn 1886
"I bored me a road there with Rati's tusk and made room to pass through the rock; while the ways of the Jötuns stretched over and under, I dared my life for a draught.
'Twas Gunnlod who gave me on a golden throne a draught of the glorious mead, but with poor reward did I pay her back for her true and troubled heart.
In a wily disguise I worked my will; little is lacking to the wise, for the Soul-stirrer now, sweet Mead of Song, is brought to men's earthly abode.
I misdoubt me if ever again I had come from the realms of the Jötun race, had I not served me of Gunnlod, sweet woman, her whom I held in mine arms."
-Odin: Hávamál, stanzas 103-106

Hnitbjorg
This mythological mountain was said to be home to the Jotun, Suttungr, a giant from Norse mythology. He possessed the mead of poetry. A magical beverage made of honey and blood, that can turn everyone who drinks it into a poet and a scholar. Those who drink were able to answer any question, and it was also a source of artistic inspiration.
Suttungr kept the mead hidden deep inside Hnitbjorg where it was guarded by his daughter, Gunnlod. The god Odin, Allfather managed to sneak inside in the form of a snake. He seduced Gunnlod and persuaded her to allow him three sips of the mead. He managed to down all three containers and fled the mountain – now the only one to contain the mead of poetry and the knowledge that it promised.

THE MEAD OF POETRY III
Tumblr media
4.   DEPARTURE
Odhinn left having won possession of the Mead of Poetry. Odhinn departed the same way he came in (Inguz ). Shapeshifting as an eagle Odhinn represented transcendental transformation (Sowilo) and contrasts to entry by horizontal snake shapeshifting (Ehwaz). Odhinn enters horizontally (snake), creates transformative energy, then escapes vertically (eagle.) Echoes of Eihwaz / Jera.
Spilled Mead of Poetry upon Odhinn’s return to Asgard symbolised the inspiration of The Poet (Ansuz) and the ability to reproduce this myth and win wisdom through sharing / exchange within ecstatic states (in sex magick, for example.)
5.   THE RITE OF ODRORIR
It is proposed there is dynamic interaction between polarised forces on all levels of existence which mirrors a fundamental process within the Futhark, the material world and surrounding multiverse. These forces are expressed as the meeting or fire and ice / exchange and containment / light and dark / insertive and receptive. The middle realm is that of Ginnungagap.
This is an expression of Odhinn’s journey horizontally (existence) and vertically (consciousness.) Transformation was similarly found hanging upon The Tree of Yggdrasil, midst horizontal & vertical planes, gifted self to self.
North:        Ice ISA
East:          Exchange GIBO
South:        Fire DAGAZ
West:         Containment INGUZ
Centre:      Transformation through consciousness: HAGALAZ
This is the process which births the rune row: JERA AND EIHWAZ.
The Mead of Inspiration:              Vertical Consciousness
The Magickal Childe:                    Horizontal Creation
Thus, the dynamic unity of the interaction between life and creation (horizontal) and consciousness (vertical.)

Conclusion
In summation, myth of the Mead of Poetry in Norse mythology can be interpreted using runes and rune energies. This section was an attempt to suggest how these rune energies can be utlised into practices for personal initiation and transformation. It used a model of the horizontal realm of creation with the vertical realm of consciousness and their respective dynamic interactions. This theory was based upon a stream of inspiration received whilst meditating on the runes over some years. It was the intention of this writer that though the myth of The Mead of Poetry describes a heterosexual sexual encounter, the energies herein are trans-gender & trans-sexuality, developed by encouraging transformative exploration within intimate, loving and consensual sexual relationships.
Finally, in remembrance, ‘a gift demands a gift’. The ideas here, I believe, were gifted thirty years ago and are finally shared in the hope that they will stimulate further reflection and inspiration for others who follow The Runes. I doubt if any of this could ever have reached other eyes without social media, and thus I extend my grateful thanks to Tumblr for providing for the platform for this material to be published.
On a final personal reflection, the life of this writer has been changed and transformed by sex and sexuality in many tumultuous ways since these ideas were first written down in 1988. I hope my reflections aid others seeking to learn and grow through love and sharing
Remember. Learn. Love. Grow. Share. Protect. ALGIZ. Oh yeah and have fun too… safely.
