WIP Wednesday
More from my bb!
“Yinyin is better at a chang gun,” Wei Wuxian said, and Jiang Wanyin glared at him. Lan Qiren gave him an appraising look. “You have used a chang gun before?” Jiang Wanyin nodded even though he looked unsure. “He used to compete in gunshu!” “Wei Wuxian,” Jiang Wanyin hissed. “We have a gun,” Lan Qiren said and went to the backroom. While he was in there, Nie Huaisang watched his brother and Jiang Yanli go through several forms with the battle axe. It flowed just as well as when they were in the gym – even though that axe was larger than she was. There was art to it. He wondered if she had competed as well. Lan Qiren emerged with a staff and handed it to Jiang Wanyin before stepping back to watch. Jiang Wanyin blushed. “Do a form,” Wei Wuxian urged. Jiang Wanyin nodded before testing the weight of the gun, balancing it and twirling it. He then jumped, twirled the staff, and landed in a crouch. “Another!” Wei Wuxian enthused. “It’s been too long,” Jiang Wanyin muttered, standing again. “Do it anyway,” Lan Qiren said. “A gun might be more efficient for you than a crossbow. If you can use one but not the other, use the one that will save your life.” Jiang Wanyin blushed and looked at Nie Huaisang, who gave him an encouraging look. Jiang Wanyin nodded and sank into a crouch before he did the most complicated routine Nie Huaisang had ever seen. It was like a dance. There were jumps and crouches and a fucking flip all while jabbing and twirling the staff. It was sexy. The competence. The economy of movement. The biceps flexing and the cords on his arms… Delicious. “Told you,” Wei Wuxian said smugly. Jiang Wanyin breathed heavily and was slightly flushed. Nie Huaisang couldn’t tell if it was from performing in front of people or the exertion from the performance itself. “That was beautiful,” Nie Huaisang enthused. “A bit rusty,” Lan Qiren said with a nod, “but it’s something we can work with. Better than learning to use a crossbow from scratch.” Jiang Wanyin nodded, looking down. “I thought the flip was inspired,” Nie Huaisang added with a smile. Lan Qiren gave him an irritated look.

Monk Weapons: Staff
Gun, Bou, or a thousand other things
In China, the staff is known as the “Grandfather of Weapons.” Not only is it, prehistorically, one of the first things humans must have used to fight with, but it is even for modern martial artists the beginning of their weapons training: the staff’s training translates to swords, polearms, or flexible weapons. Because the staff is so easy to make in all but the most resource-poor environments, and its use as a walking stick makes it an option in all but the most restrictive environment, it is a weapon and tool one will see in virtually every setting. Staves made of waxwood, oak or ash are good, but bamboo, rattan, or even metals can exist depending on the user’s needs for flexibility and weight.
Staff users are incredibly common in media - among other things, they do not connote a particular country or culture the way the sanjiegun or kama do. A European or African themed character is just as comfortable with them as an Asian one. One of the most famous staff users is the Monkey King Sun Wukong, whose Ruyi Jingu Bang changes size and length freely. Other staff users are very common, even excluding mages.
In combat, the staff is another incredibly flexible weapon, figuratively speaking. They may be “simple weapons” but the low skill floor doesn’t mean a low skill ceiling. Unlike a blade, it can be held directly under any part the user wishes to strike with, or as far on the end as one can grip. It can shift its length in the middle of a technique, and attack from both ends or its center. Fighting against a skilled staff user means having to react to more possible angles than against a swordsman, at times. However, all but the heaviest iron staves will have less killing force than a mace or sword. Though, with enough power to break bones and crack skulls in skilled hands, they are not harmless. Staves have another element besides their fighting potential. They are very symbolic weapons - as walking sticks, they represent experience; a staff carrying person is well traveled, wise, or perhaps just elderly. A decorated or capped staff confers some authority and is appropriate for spellcasters, religious leaders, or people holding ceremonial office. Mages who fight with their staves are uncommon, but do exist. Because they are common and inexpensive, staves represent humility - a staff user is making less of a display of wealth than a man with a custom forged greatsword. Consider that a character who carries a staff instead of a spear, halberd or sword is probably deliberately trying not to look as warlike, powerful, and deadly with their “commoner’s” weapon.

Damn... @bostaffarts Artist: @saltodelpastorcanario @rubensosadelarosa The shepherd's leap (Spanish: Salto del pastor) is a folk sport practised throughout the Canary Islands. The origins of salto del pastor may date back to the Guanches, the aboriginal inhabitants of the islands prior to the Castilian conquest period of the early 15th century. Canarian shepherds required a specialised means of transporting themselves safely across ravines and down steep embankments, and settled on the use of long wooden poles known as lanza or garrote. These poles are fitted with sharp metal points called regatón . . . . . . #saltodelpastorcanario #saltodelpastor #bostaff #stickfighting #staffspinning #bostaffskills #kobudo #bojutsu #jodo #gunshu #kampfkunst #silambam #kungfumaster #kungfufighting #kungfutraining #flowstagram #gotflow #taichichuan #taichimaster #taijiquan #wushu #martialart #martialartstraining #ninjutsu #ninjitsu #chinesemartialarts ‎#artesmarciales #Боевыеискусства #artsmartiaux (at Planet Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTBUdk5njgq/?utm_medium=tumblr

Do you use references for the martial arts poses that you draw Maul and his padawans in? If so, how do you search for them? I absolutely adore how you draw and the weight and movement you bring to the characters. I'm in love.
Hello there, I absolutely do use references! All of those poses you see are from wushu. The best you can go look for these references is check out Wushu SEA Games, Taolu World Cup or World Wushu Championships videos on Youtube. Take some screenshots, or doodling pose as you watch however you like. My method is watching a ship load of these vids, study and observed the movement, fabrics behavior, etc...to get the vibe flowing.
here are three main type of material art that I love to draw Jedi in
Daoshu – a form of Wushu where the participant uses a sword as the main element of the routine (x)
Gunshu  – where the participant uses a staff as the main element of the routine (x)
Wing Chun  – self-defense, that requires quick arm movements and strong legs to defeat opponents (x)
