after all this time... my first guardian fanart... and it's those other guys
(freezer-room hostage scene our beloved tho)
this has alt text. extended image description below the cut.
Guo Changcheng sits slumped on the floor, his eyes closed and face wan with cold. Chu Shuzhi, crouched behind him, embraces him tightly, his black scarf wrapped like a blanket around them both. His face is grazed in several places, and his brow furrowed in worry. Their hair and clothes are tipped with frost, and the colours are blue-tinged and pale.
Ink and watercolour.

ROUND 1: POLL #54
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ROUND 1 POLLS [HERE]
PROPAGANDA BELOW
Chu Shuzhi/Guo Changcheng:
Classic grumpy x sunshine couple. they're both detectives and Chu Shuzhi is like the scary intimidating guy with mystical powers (in the show he's descended from aliens but in the novel he's like a sentient zombie?) and Guo Changcheng is the new rookie who is terrified of everything but has a heart of gold. Frustration at his incompetence turns into fondness at his endearingness. They make no sense as a pair to anyone else but they have to admit that the two of them somehow work well together against all odds. they're so entwined with each other that if you look up photos of "guardian chu shuzhi" the second result is just a picture of Guo Changcheng from the wiki. bonded pair do not separate.

For the Mistletoe Kissing: Chu Shuzhi + 6 + Guo Changcheng
Not necessarily in an 'omg he's pecs' kinda way (bc Guo Changcheng is a scrawny man) but maybe in like a Chu Shuzhi finds it comforting to feel his heartbeat? Just my wandering random thoughts in case that might be helpful

(So as per the description this isn’t really kissing, just some cuddling.)

For some reason, after a few steps, Guo Changcheng looked back. Shen Wei had yet to take even a single step from the spot. He'd removed his glasses and was absentmindedly wiping them with the corner of his shirt. In the dim hallway, his shadow stretched out, long against the floor, looking lonely and dejected. The eyes that had so determinedly avoided Zhao Yunlan were now fixed on his back. There was a dark distance in that intense gaze. His expression held both a sort of restrained yearning and an affection that was almost palpable...but at the same time, there was deep, crushing pain. Out of nowhere, Guo Changcheng got the feeling that the man had been standing there for thousands and thousands of years. Shen Wei watched Zhao Yunlan until he turned the corner, then finally noticed Guo Chancheng looking at him. A polite smile spread across the young professor's face. He put his glasses back on, as if donning a nonchalant facade. He nodded at Guo Chancheng in acknowledgement, then disappeared into the elevator, as though everything Guo Changcheng had seen was only the misconception of an apprehensive young intern. -Priest (Guardian) (Chapter 3)

Okay so while I am like. Weilan as a ship? In my top 3 epic romances of all time (that I've seen in a show personally). Which is Xena/Gabrielle, Spirk, and Weilan.
But also like when I watched the show my fondness for chu shuzhi and Guo changcheng came unexpectedly and intensely and I'd almost say I was more invested in a way. Just in the sense that like, their dynamic intrigued me a little bit more. Weilan are intense and epic and everything I expect Of a grand romance for the ages. And also mature and relatable and well acted (and very xena/gabrielle category). But chuguo? It's the "I'm a cannibal don't love me" "I'm a double agent why am I babysitting a human especially a cowardly weak one" "this coward I looked down on is the bravest kindest person alive I know" "this man has nothing no talent no achievement and he's so strong to still want to do this, to be this dedicated" "I haven't let myself feel since my brother died and now I have a person I'm just as afraid to lose" (which honestly the chu shuzhi and his brother and Xiao Guo parallels to shen wei and ye zun and Zhao yunlan are IMMENSE, and it's fascinating to look at weilan as similar to Lao chu and Xiao guo... how Zhao yunlan gets shen wei to connect and open up the way Xiao Guo gets Lao chu to, i could go on). It's the way chu shuzhi in some ways was the "ye zun" brother, he was the criminal, the one shen wei pardoned and made his employee (and in some ways no doubt saw it as what he wished he could've done with ye zun but Dixing was never letting ye zun out), he was the one who didn't even like his own people and Certainly didnt like humans. He was the one who only served one thing, driven by his brother (revenge, living because his brother would want it, following shen wei as he reminded chu shuzhi of his brother etc). And here he is, completely cut off (in a way shen wei isn't because shen wei does make a home on earth with humans at least at a distance as a teacher). And chu shuzhi gets close to Xiao Guo. Who brings him to his FAMILY, who sees him as family, who grabs hold of chu shuzhi and doesn't get scared and let go (could you imagine if anyone did that for ye zun how different things may have gone? See my fanfic what makes monsters stop devouring lol). Just like... the ENTIRE dynamic of chuguo interests me so much
So like. I'm reading the novel and just waiting to fall into the deep end of getting so into chuguo again I neglect the leads lol ToT

Just finished Zhen Hun Vol. 2 and I don’t even have the words to describe how I’m feeling, but I’ll try.
First of all, I don’t care for the drama. I only watched the first couple episodes, but with the EXTREME departure from the premise of the novel and the not great casting (the actors are all good actors; but with a few exceptions, those are NOT the characters I pictured when reading the novel) I just couldn’t continue it. So as far as the drama goes, I haven’t seen it, and this post will be about the novel only.
As far as protagonists go, I LOVE Zhao Yunlan. I love that he pretends to be facetious and shallow, but actually cares a lot about the people (and yao) he deems as his. He’s also extremely competent in a way that’s extremely fun to read, because the reader is usually in on it. I like him more than Chang Geng from Sha Po Lang/Stars of Chaos, but as the official translation for Faraway Wanderers hasn’t even been announced yet, I can’t compare him to Zhou Zishu as I’ve only watched (and LOVED) Word of Honor.
I also ADORE the (as-of-yet unconfirmed but come on) side ship of Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng. I might like them more than the main pairing. I love Changcheng. The narrative constantly paints him as a coward, but he always stands his ground despite being afraid, which really makes him extremely brave. He’s just good, and I love how Priest hints around his love towards Shuzhi in a expert example of “show-not-tell.” Even when Shuzhi could be seconds away from killing him, he never for a second loses his belief that Shuzhi is a good person.
And Shuzhi, in his own way, realizes and returns that devotion. It’s such an understated, vague way of writing a side pairing and yet I eat up every scene they have together.
Now. The ending. I don’t know why the last 30 pages or so destroyed me, considering that Yunlan figures out a lot of it in the 1st and 2nd novels anyway, but his backstory was so fucking sad. I love how Priest writes characters that COULD be the typical “OP main character chosen one” archetype, but then entirely swerves the things that would push that character into Mary Sue territory.
I LOVE how this series deals with Chinese mythology and ancient literature. I think that’s why it rubbed me so wrong that the drama just…threw all that out the window and made it about aliens. Zhen Hun is one of the most involved danmei I’ve read when it comes to actual Chinese mythology. Even Thousand Autumns, which I adore because it’s setting is a REAL period in ancient Chinese history with side characters that actually existed, doesn’t delve so much into the actual mythology.
Zhen Hun is a danmei, but it isn’t really a cultivation novel in the traditional sense, and I think that’s what really grabbed me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a traditional cultivation setting. But something about the way Priest wrote Zhen Hun is so magnetic, perfectly blending mythology and a modern setting.
I can’t wait for Vol. 3.

Hey Guardian fandom, does anyone remember offhand how Guo Changcheng addresses Da Qing in the drama? I remember him using Chu-ge and Hong-jie, and I have the impression it's Lin Jing-ge, but I can't remember at all what he calls Da Qing.
I'm trying to use my limited writing time to get words down rather than skimming through drama episodes trying to find a conversation where it comes up, so I appreciate any help!
