look there's just something so intoxicating about that first moment. you being stressed and overwhelmed (something's wrong with your apartment/house) and frazzled, maybe only half-dressed or your hair in a disarray and then of course, the knock at the door comes at the most inopportune time. and you open it half-grateful and half-irritated only to freeze and have to crane your neck to look up at this big guy standing just outside your door, clad in a wrinkled uniform (either a uniform shirt and jeans or coveralls). your mouth going dry at the sight of him.

and then you have to invite this man into your place and he doesn't even take off his work boots and you spend the next hour or so oscillating between annoyed and outrageously turned on. trying to do busy work throughout the rest of the house instead of hovering right behind this strange guy in your space.

my fill for @guardianbingo bonus round five: answer.

i wanted to fill some gaps in canon with this fic — primarily, what happens after shen wei walks out of zhao yunlan's apartment in episode 23. i also really wanted to portray zhao yunlan's blindness in a more anchored way than we see in the show, particularly all the small ways that suddenly becoming disabled changes (or doesn't change) the day to day habits of your life. what i didn't expect was for this fic to slowly become a character study of shen wei that revolves around the way he thinks about his own life, tracing through the major moments of his life up until the present. this is a story about knowing someone and being known in return, about the sometimes-voluntary and sometimes-involuntary intimacy of disability, and about the way that time can change what you tell yourself about your own past.
