Build A Cowboy Round 5!

Hi good evening sorry for vanishing OK SO i mentioned in the tags of my first poll that this cowboy is not just going to be a vaguely historical cowboy, but from a Very specific time frame, because of the fic that his partner Javi exists in. That being said, there is a lot to unpack here with this! The time period exactly is 1841, the setting is Texas (because I am texan and we are predictable) and oh my god this is one of the most insane times for a character to be from texas 😭

Our cowboy will have in fact lived through the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821), the Texas Revolution (1835-1836), tx's CRINGEFAIL attempt at self governing, rapidly approaching our annexation into the US in 1844-5, and then coming right up on the fuckign CIVIL WAR in 1861. These guys deeply understand the concept of "get me the fuck out of the interesting times, im sick of the interesting times". im so sorry cowboys, you can blame Herman Melville for this.

anyways yall didnt come here for a history lesson but you are in fact going to get one because i am insufferable first and an artist second :) and also as a note, race and backstory are always intertwined things but Especially when it is fuckign 1841 so. yeah exercise caution, there will be discussion of racism, medical close-calls, and anti-indigenous genocide. PLEASE ACTUALLY READ THE BACKGROUNDS BEFORE CHOOSING ONE! you dont have to read the sources. those are just there because i have autism. 👍

BACKSTORY A: Black Cowboy fled Texas* to Oklahoma with his family after the revolution, now travels up the trade routes breaking wild horses, passing along abolitionist messages, and assisting refugees. A miracle baby surviving a cleft lip with limited surgery and sustained permanent hearing damage as a result, he took up the trade of horsebreaking with flying colors, keeping right up with his older brothers. A sharp shot, keen eye, and a talented horseman, his best trained horses help him identify sounds that he otherwise can't hear. Loosely familiar with PSL, but primarily used a mix of lip-reading, localized/community generated sign growing up.

* After the US aided Texas in staging a coup against Mexico and declaring independence, an ordinance passed in 1836 that fully banished free Black people from the region unless they had personal pardon from Congress. This ordinance was not passed without pushback, and it changed shape and restriction over the years as people of color such as Joseph Tate, John and Charity Bird, Diana Leonard, Allen Dimery, and more all fought for their right to their own lands and lives. The law eventually settled into what was known as the Ashworth Act in 1840, which allowed free Black people to stay IF they had been residing in the state before 1836. It certainly wasn't the victory many had hoped, and even though many free Black persons in Texas were granted pardon to stay, like the Ashworths who the act was named after, many others were forced to leave after their allotted time was up, and were threatened with the future of slavery should they return. thank you texas history for being a vile piece of shit 👍

BACKSTORY B: Mexican/Tejano Vaquero from West Texas whose family has been ranching and cattle driving for decades. Has no interest in moving post-revolution, fuck you very much. If the borders are going to cross his family without asking*, then there's no need to cross them back. Technically lives with his family, but spends extensive periods of time away from home on cattle drives. Steady-handed, steadfast, quick to keep his herd safe. Miraculously survived a cleft lip as a baby and sustained permanent hearing damage** as a result, but that didn't stop his father from teaching him everything he knew, nor our man from taking to it like a fish to water. Knows more about cattle driving than you will ever forget.

*Some brief notes on the borders shifting and alienating people in their own rightful land.

**There was no official sign language of Mexico until the first Deaf school was established in 1869, but he and his family likely have a community-based one that works for them.

BACKSTORY C: Coahuiltecan (specifically Payaya)* cowboy, farrier, and leatherworker. Picked up the line of work as family was pushed to assimilate, one of the few still claiming Coahuiltecan identity at this time**, and has made a good living for himself and his sisters with it. Like the others, miraculously survived a cleft lip as a child but sustained permanent hearing damage as a result. Knows Plains Indian Sign fluently, and also relies on the direction of his horse for picking up sudden sounds before he can spot them. Tries to keep his work as local as possible to avoid separation from family for long, and whenever that is necessary, makes sure to come back soon.

*Note: Coahuiltecan is a term referring to several northern-Mexican and southern-Texan autonomous groups with distinct cultural differences. However, since Spanish and French colonizers lumped these groups together, an immense amount of distinguishing knowledge has since been lost.

** Also note: the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan Nation is still very much around today (check out their site!) but nearing the mid 19th century, people at least claiming/listing this heritage on legal documents dwindled immensely for a variety of reasons.

*Spoiler warning ahead for those who didn't see the ep yet-*

Soooo to start things off, lets get to the Positives!

*-M&M get to stand out more in the main A-story for a change, yay! 👏👏And even including a bit of drama for the couple to deal with as they started to clash over their roles in this "mystery"-solving; especially with Millie revealing to carry some insecurities over not feeling "appreciated" outside of a supportive role/killing-machine… poor girl :c Glad to see she was able to have her moment to shine on stage by the end while Moxxie "took care" of their suspect, the gal deserved that time to just let loose on her own, yknow? 🥺

*-The summer camp aesthetic was a fun change of scenery for the story here, and I liked the designs for characters like the blue demon client at the start, alongside Millie & Moxxie's human disguises ("Moxxine" & "Millard"), they were cute~ :3

*-While Blitz didn't play too big of a role here in the long run, his gentle coaxing to his sister Barbie Wire at the end to try and amend things was rather touching to see (not really seeming to mind her pronouncing the "O" in his name either, unlike with other characters)… even if ultimately tragic given her rejection at the end :(. I really hope we get more insight of their family background later, 'cause there's alot of story potential for Blitz to try and face the "shadows" of his past (outside of just general exes-drama), in a meaningful character building way imo 👍

*-Not quiiiite as strong on the humor aspect (which I'll get into in a sec-), but I'll admit there's still some good chuckle-worthy moments like the "kid-stuck-in-a-crater" gag, along with this one still-shot during the Blitz & Moxxie VS Barbie fight lol

*-Nice to see a return of those Asmodean crystals, ever since their cameo in "The Circus" I've always been curious to see them in-action given their role as another portal-making item :o the crystalline-looking portals made from them look so pretty too~

As far as the Negatives of this ep are concerned? …Ehhhh-

*-As much as I enjoyed the M&M spotlight… I'd be lying if I said I didn't find the execution a bit… "clunky" at certain points ^^; Mainly on Moxxie's end 'cause… oof did he feel rather cringey at times, getting randomly hung up about some camp kids not liking him over Millie? :| Like… okay sure, its one thing to criticize her not prioritizing the "investigation" mystery as seriously as she should've… but I mean, you're basically doing the same thing trying to win over everyone as this ditzy teen girl, Moxx so like… who are you to talk? :/ Thankfully he got over that by the end and made things right by his wife but still… smh, dude >>

*-For a character as hyped up as Barbie Wire's been by the fandom since the pilot… I'm surprised that her first-ever reveal is only in the last few minutes of a B-plot? .-. Like… this is the long-lost sister of our main character, mind you, and her presence alone through that one photo in "Ozzie's" was enough to shake up Blitz to the core… so, why wasn't she given more of a major story to come back into her brother's life? 🤷‍♀️ I don't even mind that she's not interested in making amends with him atm (esp. with his stalkerish behavior here I can't really blame her tbh, as much as I love the guy- ^^;), but still…more additional context in-general could've helped make her debut a lil more interesting imo (same with Stella's brother Andrealphus).

*-Humor wise… ehhhhh yeah, some of it didn't really sit right with me tbh :/ Like, okay I get HB's always been a rather "raunchy" show since its inception, and I'm all for some clever adult humor when done right…

…But I mean, did we really need bits like M&M pretending to be "siblings" while disguised (when… idk why they couldn't have just pretended to be a regular teen couple tbh? .-.), only to then having that big "steamy" moment in front of a crowd of campers…? :| Idk, humor IS subjective at the end of the day so, I guess your mileage may vary on some of these joke executions… 🤷‍♀️

*-Pacing felt a bit imbalanced (again), with moments like the big ending fight scene feeling rather… "stiff", in some parts? : o Idk, probably could've benefitted from adding in a few more minutes or something to make it flow a lil better .3.

*-Fun as it was seeing Millie getting her own song for a change (that's not just another love duet with Moxxie)… idk, it admittedly wasn't the most memorable compared to some previous HB songs (minus the lil lyrics popping underneath like a cheesy music video, that was funny lol) 🤷‍♀️That and Moxxie's own "solo" attempt at the campfire scene was… again, cringey (though I think that was the point lol) :P.

…Aaaaand yeah, that about covers my initial first impression thoughts of the ep! If I had to give my own rating again… prooobably somewhere around a C-rank? Again, I still enjoyed the M&M (+mainly Millie's) spotlight overall, but with the rushed-over Barbie Wire addition & some of the cringier humor bits… Iiii just don't know if I'd consider it among my fave eps anytime soon, imho ^^;

he did still get accidental top surgery that the ocean goddess [who thinks of him as a little silly guy and likes to follow his life because hes so cringefail about everything] healed him from so he didnt just die about it. but anyway he has top surgery scars but he didn’t Technically need it

oh yeah the ocean goddess LOVES him he reminds her of her brother who was also cringefail as hell. she helps joey be like. faster under the water and made his trident better but she doesnt like. have a Proper Consciousness. shes like at that stage where you Just woke up or are about to pass out and Everythibg ever is funny . she doesnt know that shes lizzie’s ghost 👍

when he figures out hes aromantic he just completely swears off dating which Would be difficult for him except katherine & jimmy r really nice to him and are willing to give him a lot of skin to skin contact which is literally all he wants from a partner. he is leaning on them and hugging them and looking over their shoulders ALL the time. please also be aware that both of them are a good chunk taller than him.

he got mad at shelby for beating him in the fight so theyre still fighting each other but once he gets over it and she forgives him hes also all over her but she gets more jokingly annoyed about it than katherine or jimmy. katherine gives them both kisses on the cheeks & forehead all the time btw

shelby is shorter than joe but she can pick him up so she does it all the time and when shes Actually annoyed at him she just picks him up and throws him into the pond and its like the exact opposite of spray bottling him in the face because he just gets dunked. its no biggie anyway bc he can breathe underwater

my beloved rio... i'd rerolled for hours trying to get a good starter account with him. this rio was THE card for me for the first half year; he was my unchanging oshi card that i always got to stare at while grinding anticlockwise <3 i didn't get to train him until the first 4 star select tickets were distributed, but even then i stuck to the untrained art because i was so in love with it 🥺

What's your favorite AAside event story?

yume no ato, without question. not just because of the reiji (yes ok it was the reiji) but the story was so substantial for an event story to the point that my friend and i suspect it was originally intended to be a song story. i'd always wanted tadaomi to do something hurtful to reiji as a plot vehicle for us to learn more about reiji's past, and then that's exactly what happened!!! AND we got an adorable baby reiji art out of it!!! i could ask for nothing better (except to maybe make the event happen any later because tiering two events in a row was hell 👍)

these've been my main dudes for most of the game's lifespan-- save for tadaomi, who used to be haruka until i splurged my savings after eos announcement and got a tada that was more powerful. it felt kind of fitting that i'd swapped out haruka around the time we learned he goes abroad... ^^'

yuto isn't anywhere near my top5, but i'd gotten his initial 4 star on my day one rerolls so he was a staple on my early-game team until promised diamond event, in which i got 3 copies of yuto while pulling for rio... the two of them have been invariably on my main team since then 😊

hands down reiji cs5. still working on the translation with my dear vroom but i need you to know it's everything to me. tl;dr it's about mochi and shu puts a piece of mochi directly into reiji's mouth #Real #NotAHoax and i still haven't recovered

prooobably gotta go with janus reiji; it just checks so many things on my list: the ruffled reiji, the mask theme, the shurei, the kanata pointing out the shurei, the comparisons between shurei and kanaharu, the tadaomi just bein' there, it's everything. it's also the first card story i ever tried translating by myself! thank u vroomie for helping me clean it up for public posting~

honorable mention to tadaomi's in the rain 3 star for having an absolutely adorable moment of peace between tada and reiji... can't understate how rare and fleeting it feels with the gentle music (which i could swear isn't used in any other epsi appearance in the entire game) and each of the boy's smiles... it's just lovely :)

argo's! it's just really relaxing and charming. epsi's actually stresses me out so much that i started playing with non-live music off 😭

When and how did you start playing AAside?

immediately. not sure what the "how" means here but i will share that due to us not knowing the exact hour that aaside's servers would open, i had a hell of a day in terms of sleep since i'd gotten up at some ridiculous hour like 5am for the starting live and then took naps on and off throughout the day to power through to the following 1am when the servers finally let us in

How ok are you after reading more about your oshi's history/before Tokyo info?

i had quite neatly predicted the topic of reiji's trauma barely a week prior to the drop and yet i was still a helpless little oshi tied to the traintracks as history entries #9-#12 hurtled towards me

What costume (aside from 4* and shop costumes) would you want to see them wear?

janus reiji :) AND! i want nirvana shu outfit, it's soooo pretty. if we had gotten either of these in aaside i don't think i'd have ever changed these two out of them

the 💋 mark for the cheek has got to be the funniest, cutest, most appropriate accessory you could ever put in a joseimuke game, whoever came up with it has my deepest gratitude
