Micah's hand had been jittering everywhere; from his wine glass to his watch to the tablecloth, then he launched it at Gary's face like he was going in for a punch. Gary tried hard not to flinch-he nearly succeeded. Blunt, manicured fingertips landed gently on the hollow of his cheek and stroked.

Micah smeared the skin harder, exactly where James had held his jaw ten minutes ago, as if he could rub away bruises and crescent nail marks. As the pressure rubbed the thin cheek skin backwards and forwards over his back teeth, he could almost taste blood in his mouth.

It had been one of their rules back when he'd started seeing James; no marks. Couldn't have Nicola and Em finding out. If Em saw his cheek and jaw covered in marks like this, would she think he was having an affair? Maybe he wanted her to. If she saw these bruises, if he told her that the man he was seeing on the side was an angry drunk who blamed his bruised knuckles on the boxing gym, would she give a shit?

But she'll never see the marks when he won't see her for the next week and a half. With his sky sports commitments he'll be in London for two days, then he begged off being her plus one to her nephews wedding, which will keep her in the Isle of Wight for the long weekend. The day he told her he couldn't come - some bullshit excuse about a Salford FC meeting-she made dinner for the girls and told him to make his own. He ended up ordering Chinese. On Monday he'll be back in London, this time with the girls in tow to see their grandparents. Except the girls will put big chunky headphones on to avoid speaking to him on the train, then they'll tuck themselves away in their shared hotel room, then they'll roll their eyes over dinner when he doesn't know about every school friend they don't speak to because she kissed someone's friend's boyfriend, or every school trip or project or sports club they joined without ever mentioning it to him. Em acted like he was the only one who needed to work hard to connect with the girls while they were still young, as if they didn't intentionally shut him out at every chance they got.

The girls weren't going to ask where dad got the fading marks.

She remembers very little of her past, only what they’ve been re-taught by others. Opal has been in the spotlight since childhood - there are magazines and ads that show them as a child, be it for clothing or toys or jewelry, an accessory for their mother, the actress Brigette Fontaine. That is obvious, something that can be physically seen and understood, and with it comes very vague memories; Opal can remember being painted for pageants, can remember their mother smacking her chubby baby thighs and encouraging them to spit-take the sweets they chewed. Who’s papa? There are photos around their grand parisian home, a stern looking man with a cold gaze, a man who prioritizes work over family and is disappointed that Opal is not a man. When he has a son with another woman, there is a complete disappearance of him from her life.

They didn’t stay in Paris because now she’s in New York, a singer in a casino. America held better studios, better make-up and record companies that Opal could be thrown at. A few minor roles, nothing serious, teenage years spent on sitcoms as the ditzy french best friend, accent thick and played for laughs in front of a live studio audience. The accident was terrible. Still, nobody knows how it came about - did Brigette owe money? The former actress had been taking out loans to fuel an addiction to surgery and opioids. Nobody knows, only the outcome is fact; that legally, Opal Fontaine should be dead. Two limbs crushed to a bloody pulp, spine cracked, blood spilling from her ears. And yet - she isn’t. Half of their body has become meshed with robotics, Opal a picture of modern cybernetic enhancements and what they can do. There was a price to it all, for stuff like that doesn’t come for free.

Brigette Fontaine dead, aged 58, overdose. All that debt is piled onto Opal who learns that their life was paid for with dirty money, an arrangement with a local gang Burning Gods. It was transferred to her, now a headline singer at Old World Casino, a shadow of who they were prior to the accident.

Though in debt to the Burning Gods, she also works off some of that via doing a little hacking which is why her associate status isn’t chosen but almost contractual.

PERSONALITY:  Erlang Shen is the living embodiment of justice and righteousness.  Oaths are taken very seriously and promises are not to be made lightly.  With no other living children, he is a devoted and loving father to his son, determined to never fail him again.  He is still heartbroken over the loss of his wife and continues to wear his wedding ring even now.  As the General of the Jade Emperor’s guard, he is a formidable warrior who exudes an aura of strong power and security.  As the leader of the celestial sages, he is both clever and wise.  Despite being the first Chinese demigod to ascend to godhood, he has classic middle child syndrome and is thus a fiercely independent individual.  Though many may consider him a “hard ass” and difficult to approach–especially since he does not allow willful ignorance a pass and is very much a workaholic–he exudes a safe presence and tends to be the first person people seek when they are in danger.

HISTORY:  In a time before time, it was forbidden for gods to have relations with humans.  However, the Jade Emperor’s own sister fell in love with a mortal man and the lovers had three children.  Upon learning of his sister’s transgression, the Jade Emperor executed her husband and eldest son then imprisoned her beneath the Tao Mountain.  Throughout his life, the second son trained to be a fierce warrior and won both praise and favor among the gods for his successes in battle, a youth able to see beyond even their illusions and deceptions, a boy who could see the truth.  The gods gifted him many rewards for his triumphs; however, upon obtaining his Divine Spear, he wielded the mighty weapon to cleave the Tao Mountain in half to free his mother from her unjust imprisonment, as demons sought to pull her into the underworld, he fought them back using divine flames and lightning created from his Third Eye.

Further accomplishments came in the form of rescuing an entire land from flooding; it was one thing to create a complex irrigation system to ease the impact while also benefitting farmers and wildlife, but another to stop the source of the flood by shackling and taming an unruly and wild dragon bent on claiming an innocent boy as his sacrifice.  Later known as the Eight Celestial Sages, the cunning warrior led his seven friends to trick the dragon and ultimately subdue him in a pool beneath the Dragon-Taming Temple.  After this, the eight comrades went on to conquer a wild fire dragon by constructing a large dam between 66 mountains and capturing the beast there.  All these accomplishments and more led him to become the first demigod to ascend to godhood, consumed Xiwangmu’s elixir of immortality, and became lead Sage and General under his uncle, the Jade Emperor, where Erlang Shen continued to perform many, many righteous acts.

After Sun Wukong consumed all the peaches of immortality, the Monkey King proceeded to defeat every great warrior and army in battle until ultimately the Jade Emperor called upon the Eight Sages.  Initially, Erlang Shen and his Howling Celestial Dog had quite the challenge with this battle as Sun Wukong could also perform 72 transformations.  Nevertheless, the thieving Monkey King was injured in their fight and attempted to hide in the mountains.  But with Erlang Shen’s Eye of Heaven, the general could see through Sun Wukong’s guise of a humble mountain shrine and ultimately apprehended the criminal who was sentenced to imprisonment beneath a mountain as Erlang Shen’s own mother had once been.

For lifetimes upon lifetimes, Erlang Shen continued on as the leader of the Eight Sages and General, known for generations as the greatest warrior deity of his pantheon.  Occasionally, he ventured to the mortal realm to bestow blessings to places, people, and events.  It was at one of these places–a tea house in Seoul–that he met Im Iseul, a brilliant woman whose beauty was only accentuated by her virtuous and compassionate heart.  Though not perfect by any means, the couple truly did understand one another and were fully devoted to each other, married in the very tea house where they met and eventually welcoming a son into the world.

Unfortunately, because of his godly duties, Erlang Shen could not remain in the mortal realm, nor could his wife and son live with him in the realm of the gods.  While his son was only a toddler, the Sage had to depart his wife, child, and in-laws.  Though gone, his protection on the tea house remained, knowing full well that his wife and son would become a target for demons seeking retribution against the warrior deity.  Dark energies might surround the tea house, but his warding did not allow them entry.  That is, until the day he was forced to make a decision, the day he was forced to choose between rescuing his family or saving the whole of the universe by temporarily pulling protections in Seoul and redirecting them to seal an otherworldly beast.  It was during this short time that his in-laws were brutally murdered by demons lying in wait.  Once the calamity had passed, Erlang Shen immediately checked on his family, only to discover his middle-school-aged son on an emotional rampage fueled by rage and grief; utilizing his warding ability, the Sage was able to keep the structures and people safe from In-soo’s surge of power.  While Iseul did forgive Erlang Shen for the loss of her parents, she declined his offer to relocated her and In-soo.  She had insisted on rebuilding the tea house and he insisted on reinstating the blessing on the tea house.  This time, the protective barrier was fortified by utilizing their love for one another, and as long as she was alive, the demons would be kept at bay–this way, if he had to be faced with the same harrowing situation again where he was forced to make the decision between family and the world, the protective barrier would remain through her will.  However, as she was a mortal woman, this also took a toll on her physically.  After their son had grown to a man, Iseul sadly passed away which left Erlang Shen heartbroken upon his return to the tea house, to find it under new management and his son nowhere to be seen.

It was when Xiwangmu, Queen Mother of the West and Empress of the Gods, called upon him that Erlang Shen’s purpose took a shift.  Not only did she inform him that she had encountered his son in Mount Phoenix, but also someone had dared to attack another god on the island–and not just any god, but Wang Yanluo, Lord of Diyu.  To restore safety to the sanctuary that was Mount Phoenix, and to hopefully reunite with his son for the first time in decades, Erlang Shen accepted the role of Chief of Police and took a seat on the City Council to reinstate security on the island.

Lan is a young woman who stands at 5'5" (1.65 m). She is initially thin due to her family's impoverished lifestyle, but she gains some weight and muscle mass while in the army. Her light skin tends to sunburn more than tan in extreme heat, and she has a few scars from her time as a bannerman. Her brown eyes are almost as dark as her black hair, which grows quickly but is kept at chin length just in case she needs to tie it up and pass as a man.

PERSONALITY

Sometimes, Lan's parents are exasperated with her, because she often is the opposite of the ideal daughter (in China or England). She is clumsy, independent, and outspoken. However, her kind smile and big heart tend to draw people in rather than push them away. She's also very determined, not to mention intelligent, as she quickly learned English once her family moved to London, knowing that they'd have an easier time if at least two of their seven family members were bilingual. It isn't often that she just "gives up" on any cause or opinion that's dear to her. One of her fears is that her loved ones won't ever accept her for who she truly is, while the other believes she'll dishonor her ancestors. Because of these, she occasionally uses two different English names (one traditionally female, one male). Lan was raised learning about the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and she knows that most of England is Evangelical (Protestant), but she hasn't found a religion that's really spoken to her yet.

HISTORY

Her family was quite unlucky. Though her parents were a love match (despite being in an arranged marriage), Mu Lan's mother Hua struggled to have children, and ultimately Mu Lan was the only one who survived past the age of five. On top of that, her father Zhou was a bannerman (basically a soldier), and at that time, men in his profession were paid so little that they had to work another job in addition. He didn't mind farming, but an accident left him crippled, barely able to support his body weight without a cane. So his wife and daughter worked the fields, and when Zhou was called to serve, his daughter went in his place, disguised as a man. She was gone almost an entire year before she was found out. Wanting to escape punishment and their impoverished situation (not to mention the frequent rebellions the country kept having to deal with), the Mu family went to England. A kind cousin who had joined the middle class by opening a dress shop specializing in silk repairs and alterations took them in. While there, Mu Lan learned English. Because her parents had taught her to read and do math in Mandarin, she was able to become a sought-after governess who specialized in language (even though teaching foreigners Chinese had been forbidden by the Emperor).
