Choreography: How to Save a Scene from Too Much Interiority
Warning! This essay contains some (minor) spoilers for the novel Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. (We’re still in the first half of the book). In her second novel Half of a Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie achieves an ideal to which I aspire: a smart, literary, highly readable love story full of cultural references, history, and vivid, textured characters––just the kind of…

I am looking for recommendations for books written by black authors about the struggles the black community faces. I would be grateful if you could please suggest some below. I have read two of the books pictured here by @chimamanda_adichie. I highly recommend Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun. Next up will be The Thing Around Your Neck with my friends, @the.snow.child and @ink.on.us. Have you read any of this brilliant writer’s work? . . . . . . #thethingaroundyourneck #americanah #purplehibiscus #halfofayellowsun #chimamandangoziadichie @houseofzabadi https://www.instagram.com/p/CA-4fNUHhev/?igshid=qkjj4gih2xay

"𝕱𝖔𝖈𝖚𝖘 𝖔𝖓 𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖗 𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖘. 𝕽𝖊𝖆𝖉. 𝕭𝖊 𝖆 𝖌𝖚𝖊𝖘𝖙 𝖎𝖓 𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖗 𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖑𝖉𝖘. 𝕻𝖊𝖗𝖍𝖆𝖕𝖘 𝖞𝖔𝖚’𝖗𝖊 𝖌𝖗𝖔𝖜𝖎𝖓𝖌. 𝕰𝖛𝖔𝖑𝖛𝖎𝖓𝖌. 𝕿𝖗𝖚𝖘𝖙 [...]. 𝕻𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖊𝖓𝖈𝖊." - Mona Awad 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯 The world is coming undone, is crumbling under pressure under the hands of one man. 📔 This World Poetry Day, I wanted to share a poem by Ukrainian poet, Ilya Kaminsky. Published in 2009, 'We Lived Happily During the War' is a short, sharp account of helplessness in the face of others' suffering, of others suffering distant and so close to home. Watching war is a dismal feeling of guilt and privilege and uselessness. 📔 Literature is a necessity, a luxury, an education and an escape. It is where many of us turn at all times. It is where experiences are captured and carried forward when voices cease. 📔 War punctuates many of my recent & current reads - Half of a Yellow Sun (the Biafran war, Nigeria), Reading Lolita in Tehran (the Iranian Revolution)... Swaddled in safety, realities become simply "story". This is my reminder - to self - to continue to be shocked, to be outraged, and appalled by human suffering and human savagery; to avoid desensitivity and intellectual inactivity. 📔 Pictured are shot through books at Tyneham Village, Dorset - a strange little capsule of civilian desertion and military rule. Pictured are Ilya Kaminsky's words. Pictured are the flowers that glitched yesterday. Today, I wish you flowers and poetry, I wish you the luxury of literature. . #worldpoetryday #ilyakaminsky #welivedhappilyduringthewar #ukraine #🇺🇦 #tyneham #poetry #bookstagram #halfofayellowsun #readinglolitaintehran #litnerd #darkacademia #bookaesthetic #literarytravel #spookynerd #generallygothic #gothic #history #bunny (at Tyneham Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbYSYtsrfn3/?utm_medium=tumblr

Is love this misguided need to have you beside me most of the time? Is love this safety I feel in our silences? Is it this belonging, this completeness?

wow. this was the first novel i read by adichie and i’ve been hungrily devouring her oeuvre since. nigeria is described in such a powerful manner that the reader becomes fixated upon the lives of the three protagonists, unable to look away. english is interspersed with igbo to unseat and involve us and to provide characterisation, it’s thrilling and haunting and magical - there’s really no lack of adjectives to describe how mindblowingly great this book is. my favourite narrative was that of ugwu, the houseboy of odenigbo and olanna. the comparison between his improverished village life and their intellectually thrilling life, ‘mellowed by alcohol, languorous with ideas’ within their home is riveting. the progression into panic as the biafran war escalates and characters lives and roles are altered and subverted is written incredibly well. there’s nothing to criticise here. “red was the colour of their siblings massacred in the north, black was for mourning them, green was for the prosperity biafra would have, and, finally, the half of a yellow sun stood for the glorious future”. 5/5 ⭐️ #book #books #bookstagram #adichie #chimamandangoziadichie #africa #biafra #baileyswomensprizeforfiction #baileyprize #womensliterature #igbo #halfofayellowsun #bookrecommendations #nigeria #ukbookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CLz6RcMl2OA/?igshid=1x5w202pizd9h

Two years ago, after many recommendations by friends and seeing it all over social media, I read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I finished it within a week and it became one of my favourite and most influential books I have ever read. while Americanah had strong themes of feminism and not fitting in that i could relate to (to certain extent, I certainly can’t relate to the Black experience in America), Half of a Yellow Sun couldn’t be more different. The only thing I knew about this novel was that it was set during the Nigerian civil war and that it followed the lives of a few different characters. The back of the book certainly didn’t tell me more, and I didn’t want to know more. after reading (and loving) Americanah, in Half of a Yellow Sun I expected to find similar themes. I expected a feminist and empowering story that would throw my white privilege in my face and I would come out of the story changed and prepared to use my white voice to amplify those who weren’t being heard, but who refused to be silenced. instead, I found a story of war, resilience, passion, immense strength, unforgettable characters and desperation. I found a corner of history I knew nothing about, which had me pulling up Wikipedia more times than I can count. I don’t think Adichie’s books are for enjoyment. I don’t “enjoy” reading her books (maybe to some extent, but you get it), I read them to learn and educate. Her books take a lot out of me, I need to focus a lot when I read them, both to absorb the story and the writing, but also to deconstruct some previous opinions I had about the Black experience. I come out of her books exhausted and changed and deeply disturbed. #halfofayellowsun #chimamandangoziadichie #books #blacklit #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CBtCyJwANmK/?igshid=19zmk9x9v9l3s

Brenda: “This novel is set in Lagos, Nigeria. Even though I grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, I can relate to a lot of it. It captures how people put their assumptions on you. On the tube one time, I was wearing a short skirt and this older African woman was signaling me to put my legs together. It was funny because it's something I'd expect my aunties would do. But at the same time, how dare you? Mind your own business.” @brendaabren #HalfOfAYellowSun #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie / @marta_bh for #subwaybookreview #london 🇬🇧 (at Finsbury Park)
