12.14.1790: Alexander #Hamilton submitted his proposal for the Bank of The United States. As indicated by his demeanor in the attached portrait, Secretary Hamilton clearly thought that his financial plan was obviously irrefutable. James Madison, myself, and numerous others did not agree . . @AmericanHistoricalTheatre is planning a public debate between Mr. Hamilton and myself, on this and other subjects, for Saturday 19 September 2020. Mr. Hamilton has graciously offered to host the debate at his home, Hamilton Grange National Memorial, in honor of Constitution Week. #AHTheatre is grateful to @theahasociety and the @nationalparkservice for their efforts to bring this conversation to the public . . Eben Kuhns is #AlexanderHamilton . The clothing he is wearing in this portrait was crafted by the talented hand of Kim Hanley, Executive Director of American Historical Theatre. This portrait was rendered during my AHT debate with Mr. Hamilton last October at @VirginiaHistory . . #theroomwhereithappens #foundingfathers #debate #NYC #FindYourPark #HamiltonGrangeNPS #HamiltonGrange #history #nonstop #UShistory #Americanhistory #Constitution #ThomasJefferson #YourThomasJefferson #jefferson https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Ea1zvD58G/?igshid=s41npdllq8fo

I joined @silk.and.sass1776 and the Hearts of Oak for Caribbean Day at Hamilton Grange. I talked about Hercules Mulligan, Hamilton's affinity for flashy clothing, and the history of tape measures. Mostly I stood around and looked pretty, and that was fine. There was Caribbean music, dance, and storytelling, and I wasn't about to compete with that. It turns out one of my companions is very good friends with one of my many cousins. #18thcenturysewing #18thcenturyclothing #hamilton #heartsofoak #hamiltongrange #caribbeanday https://www.instagram.com/p/Byv6vNPDPOW/?igshid=hzkdf4ygt5ui

#tbt February 2015, we visited Hamilton Grange uptown & had the place all to ourselves. They moved the entire house from its original location (that area behind us) to its current spot down the street in St. Nicholas Park. Yeah, it was tucked right next to that apartment building & a church. Right after this, we went to the Public & saw Hamilton the musical for the first time, & this is one of my favorite NYC memories ever. I’ve had the privilege of seeing the Original off & on Broadway cast, and I am so thrilled everyone else will have a chance to too when it drops on Disney+ tomorrow. I definitely have a lot more thoughts on it & on the study & love of history in the context of this time when America is publicly grappling with the repercussions of its original sin of upholding slavery at its founding, among other things. ⭐️ But that’s one of the many things I love about Hamilton as a creative work. It is dense & earnest enough for it to resonate in different contexts & to provoke discussion & thought. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show (& you can stay #saferathome doing it this long weekend!) & may you always be satisfied. 💚 . . . #hamilton #hamiltonmusical #historynerd #hamiltongrange #alexanderhamilton #historycrush #yayhamlet #wanderlust #travelgram #nyc #newyorkcity #geektravel #greatestcityintheworld #girlontheroam #throwbackthursday (at Hamilton Grange National Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCJuCC1A-t6/?igshid=drqnyu6pzzcg

Happy birthday to Founding Father, first US Treasury Secretary, (and rapper?) Alexander Hamilton! Hamilton's home from 1802 - 1804, The Grange, was moved 500 feet in 2008 to its current home in St. Nicholas Park. In 1889 the Grange – located at 143rd and Convent Ave in today's Hamilton Heights/ City College section of Harlem – was facing foreclosure and demolition in order to implement the Manhattan Street Grid. To save it from destruction, St. Luke's Church acquired the house and moved it to 287 Convent Avenue, two blocks south and half a block east, a lot that was protected from the new street grid. In 1960 it was designated a National Historic Landmark and acquired by the National Park Service. In 2006 it was decided that the site of St. Nicholas park would be a more appropriate location for preservation and restoration, also within the boundary of Hamilton's original 32-acre estate. The Grange was cranked up, placed on stilts and slowly moved 500-feet in six hours where it was finally secured to a new foundation. The structure was restored to appear as Hamilton knew it in 1802–1804, with its original entrance, staircase and landscaping, including 13 sweet gum trees Hamilton had planted to symbolize the original 13 states. You can visit the Grange today to see the house as it was when the Hamiltons originally moved up to Harlem! The second site I visited yesterday was Hamilton Grange National Memorial in the Harlem neighborhood of Upper #Manhattan. In the late 1700s, Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Elizabeth Schuyler, purchased property in Harlem Heights to establish a summer estate away from the city and yellow fever outbreaks, which were common during the summer periods. The Grange was finished by 1802 and the estate grew to roughly 32 acres, both of which brought considerable debt to Hamilton. The Federal-style Grange was designed by architect John McComb Jr., who also designed New York City Hall. This is the only house that Alexander Hamilton ever owned. Hamilton only enjoyed the house for two years. He died July 12, 1804 a day after being wounded during a duel with political rival Aaron Burr, in what is now Weehawken, New Jersey. His wife, Elizabeth, continued to live at the Grange until 1833 when she moved to Washington, D.C. In 1889, New York City began building the grid system of streets. The Grange would have been in the way of W. 143rd Street and torn down. St. Luke's Church bought The Grange and moved it two blocks away to Convent Avenue. The church and an apartment building were later built next to the original front and back entrances to the Grange, resulting in the loss of its porches and a reconfiguration of the home's main entrance. The Grange was designated a National Historic Landmark in December 1960. Congress authorized the National Memorial on April 27, 1962. In 2008, the National Park Service moved the home to its current location at the northern end of St. Nicholas Park, which is still on the original estate, and the house was restored to its original appearance. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #nps #nps102 #jerseycollective #exploreny #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #hamiltongrange #hamiltongrangenationalmemorial #nationalmemorial #iloveny #smallparksaturday #alexanderhamilton #harlem #stnicholaspark #nationalhistoriclandmark #nyc (at Hamilton Grange National Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByOi5oeHaj-/?igshid=1k20vt4zza6d6

Gracie Mansion, 1907. A large tract of land was purchased by carpenter Sybout Claessen in 1646, who named the area Hoorn’s Hook after his hometown in Holland. Merchant Jacob Walton later bought an eleven acre parcel here in 1769, building a stately house, which he called Belview. Walton was a Loyalist, and in February #1776, the Americans seized his estate, building a fortification protecting the #HellGate passage. In the days leading up to the invasion at #KipsBay, the British fired upon the American fortifications, and in the process destroyed the Walton House. After the Americans fled, the British rebuilt the works and used the land as a camp. After the war ended, the Walton family got the property back, and in 1798 they sold it to shipping magnate Archibald Gracie. The next year, he hired John McComb, Jr., the architect of #CityHall and #HamiltonGrange, to design a #summer residence for him (it is also likely that Ezra Weeks was involved in the project); the house may have been built on the old foundations of Belview. The elegant Federal-style home, surrounded by a wide porch that caught the cool breezes coming off of the #EastRiver, was the site of many lively dinners that included illustrious guests like Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, John Quincy Adams, and Washington Irving. Gracie lost a great deal of money during the #Warof1812, and in 1823, he sold the house, which passed through several owners until 1896, when it was taken by the city. It became a part of the new East End Park (renamed #CarlSchurzPark in 1910), and was used as a comfort station and ice cream stand. In 1922, writer and socialite May King Van Rensselaer, a descendant of Gracie, spearheaded a campaign to preserve the #historichouse and make it into a #museum dedicated to the city’s history. A group organized the Museum of the City of New York, and opened in the house in 1923, where they remained until 1932. Several years later, Robert Moses convinced the city that the house should be used as the official residence of the Mayor, and in 1942 Fiorello La Guardia and his family moved in #NYC #GracieMansion #architecture #18thCentury #history #NYChistory #DiscoveringNYC via ✨ @padgram ✨(http://dl.padgram.com) https://www.instagram.com/p/BXNIBpXg82s/
