23/01/2023-Lakeside and home post 2 of 2: Landscape
I took the first eight pictures in this photoset of views on a memorable sunny Lakeside lunch time walk, it was so lovely to be out in the fresh air enjoying the winter sunshine for a bit of time in my working day. The ice and a little bit of frost were engaging to see and take in, mixing in well with shiny green grass, bare trees and pretty light clouds in the blue sky looking nice against the trees. As with the last cold snap I am finding it pretty seeing the broken bits of ice scattered across the surface of the lakes (all three are mostly frozen now), as the second picture particularly shows. It’s quite beautiful I think that it’s not due to nature that these patterns exist but due to people enjoying being out and skimming bits of ice across the surface and possibly it freezing around them at night. And I believe I heard people doing it which created a nice whooshing sound which was great to hear. Catkins were another star of the show with some seen well against the sun at the entrance and the ones by Kornwestheim lake continuing to be a great green beacon in the landscape. I took the final two pictures in this photoset of the tree out the back kissed well by the sun which I mentioned in my last post and the sky tonight with nice frizzy clouds after a nice looking red sunset. A beautiful day. Part 1 of today’s posts is here: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/707268421822332928/23012023-lakeside-and-home-post-1-of-2

For reasons that are likely related to low dopamine, my brain has hard latched onto the idea of finding a bunch of local hypno subs, brainwashing them to love me, and then finding a nice big house and splitting the mortgage so we can all live our lives without the constant worry of financial ruin every time someone's car breaks down or whatever.

Really good race until it wasn't for us. Ran great up front and even won a stage but man I'm getting sick and tired of overtime after overtime this season and could really do without it for the rest of... forever lol
We'd probably have a great shot at the regular season lead if not for that final restart (and yknow new hamsphire, gateway)
ANYWAYS it's Daytona time with the Advance car which we've finished 5th, 5th and 1st in this season. Excited

On the nocturnal habits of Hamsphire’s elusive owls (Pt. 1)
[In which I cannot wait 3+ years for the Jane Austen flashbacks we *better* be getting in Season 3, so I made up my own.
Featuring, in no particular order: a secret smuggling ring, Aziraphale annoying the local wildlife, and Crowley making a new friend.]
In the remarkable quiet of her rather unremarkable Hampshire cottage, Miss Jane Austen had taken a defensive position behind her writing desk. Her quill, having downed one too many pints of ink, was weaving a delightful drunken waltz across parchment, breathing life into the characters of her latest work, although somewhat against its own will. However, even as her hand was forced to document the scandalous affairs of society balls and romantic mishaps, her keen mind was having a party of its own somewhere else.
Resting on a random corner of her desk, as if it had just wandered off from a dull social gathering, was a letter. While about as inconspicuous in appearance as a piece of parchment could be, the letter, much to the annoyance of her fictional characters, was the real protagonist in Jane's thoughts. With the execution of a final full stop, she finally allowed herself to eye the letter with her full attention.
"An intriguing little fellow, isn't it?" she mumbled to the four walls. Her fingers gingerly navigated the unfamiliar terrain of the fine linen paper with a hint of the trepidation you'd feel before opening a suspiciously ticking box. It wasn't the typical love letter from a fan or a persuasive piece from a money-hungry publisher. No, it had all the trappings of a secret thriller, without any of the appropriate background music.
Without further ado, she rose, pushing the chair back with the aplomb of a magician revealing his final trick. She tread across the room, the wooden floorboards protesting beneath her feet. At the fireplace, a fire, the warmth of which was doing a poor job of countering the cool British draught, crackled in varying degrees of discontent.
She reached above the mantelpiece, where an innocent-looking set of her books sat. She selected one - a copy of 'Emma', rather fitting considering the meddling she herself was about to conduct. The book, in reality, was not a book at all, but a cleverly disguised secret box. It opened to reveal a fine selection of ciphering tools, looking as if they belonged more in the hands of a learned detective than a gentlewoman of her standing. But then, appearances could be as deceiving as a flattery-spouting suitor.
Settling back at her desk, she retrieved the coded message and the cipher from 'Emma's' secretive interior, the two entities meeting like old friends who had many a scandalous tale to share. Her quill, recharged after its dramatic performance earlier, dived headfirst into the decoding process. Decrypting was a favorite pastime, her mind working as smoothly as a well-oiled conspiracy theory, and with far more proficiency than the Reddit-that-would be. This was a world that operated in the shadows, where Miss Austen, the revered author, metamorphosed into "J" the underappreciated secret agent.
"Why, this is most bewildering," she muttered. Words emerged, and altogether made no sense: consignment, midnight, rookery?
Then, like the striking of a well-tuned piano, it hit her. "A gathering of local intelligentsia?" she read aloud, her eyes widening with recognition. An idea began to form, as enticing as a plot twist in a novel, as she connected the dots.
"Mrs. Norris, we are off to a soirée!" she announced to her cat, who responded with the kind of disdain only felines and dowager countesses can muster.
In the next room, a clock chimed the eleventh hour, its sound seeming as out of place as a cucumber sandwich at a demon's feast. Time, it seemed, had a knack for making itself known when least welcome, much like a nosy neighbor who'd decided to 'pop by' right when you're in the middle of something terribly important.
"Dear me, look at that," Jane tutted. "Agent Austen, it seems your services are once again required." It was less a murmur and more of a statement that demanded a whimsical score in the background. With the decoding done, she reached for a bottle of disappearing ink. She quickly scribed a response, her hand elegantly conveying her words of acknowledgement and confirmation, weaving in coded phrases as easily as Mr. Bingley danced at a ball.
Her task complete, she sealed the letter with a wax emblem. The insignia, a simple-looking quill, was as deceptive as the rest of her evening had been. She surveyed her work, a smug satisfaction twirling in her eyes. "Just a night in the life of Jane, the novelist slash spy for King and country," she announced, to the distinct lack of applause from her audience of one.
She then returned her attention to the half-written manuscript, her mind shifting from dangerous intrigue to witty banter at a society ball. "Why, Miss Austen, you are as enigmatic as a heroine in one of your own novels," she mused, adjusting her bonnet with a flourish. Just as well, Jane thought, exiting her chair, there was never a dull moment. As she often noted, life was a lot like her favorite stories. It was full of twists, turns, and drama. Except, life also had a tendency to go off script and demand rewrites at the oddest times.
She left her home with a bounce in her step, off to mingle with the intelligentsia and perhaps unmask a plot as twisted as any she could pen.
Mrs. Norris, left to her own devices, merely yawned and settled into a comfortable slumber, unimpressed by the human propensity for drama. After all, real intrigue involved strategically knocking objects off shelves, not gallivanting off to gatherings with intellectuals.

So-Called Democracy
This is making me insane. I'm trying to research the candidates on the primary ballot in New Hamsphire and, as far as bing or duckduckgo or facebook will tell me, none of them have websites. None of them have facebook pages and none of them have done interviews. Their Ballotpedia pages are empty if they exist at all. Who are these people? How did they even get on the ballot, and why?

(Long post) How Sinema's exit is a measure of Democrats' success
She didn't steal the thunder so much as she revealed she's been beaten at her own game as Democrats surged
by
Michelangelo Signorile (love you, but I think she spells it "Kyrsten")
It’s been a few days of digesting what it means for Democrats that Arizona’s Senator Kirsten [sic] Sinema announced she’s leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent.
After reading many takes, I now think there’s been just a bit too much hand-wringing over her selfishly stealing the spotlight and throwing 2024 into stark relief (and I engaged in some of that myself), and not enough celebrating that the moment of Sinema’s departure underscored how big Democrats won in the Senate, how far they’ve come and what their strategy should be for the future. (And special thanks to Dan Rather and Eliott Kirshner, who sent me in this direction.)
Imagine yourself for a moment in Sinema’s stillettos earlier this year.
Like the rest of us, she watched as the corporate media railed on for months about a red wave coming, with even the possibility — which, weeks before the election, morphed into the probably — that the GOP would take the Senate.
According to the media narrative — which was super-fueled by biased GOP polls that dominated the polling averages — John Fetterman was rapidly deflating. Herschel Walker was likely going to beat Raphael Warnock. Catherine Cortez Masto? Finished before she even began. Mark Kelly was in trouble, and Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hamsphire could be taken down by a crazed election denier. Even Patty Murray in deep blue Washington was at great risk, the headlines blared!
Surely, Sinema was intoxicated by all of that.
She’d plotted in meticulous, years-long maneuvers, positioning herself as the brilliant center-right Democrat who knew the future — not only in her own state of Arizona, but also for the entire country. And, in her mind, if the media narrative of the 2022 election played out, Sinema would be vindicated: Democrats will have gone too far to the left, causing a gargantuan disaster for their party.
All those activists who hounded her, demanding she hold town meetings, imploring her to save their rights — some of whom even followed her into a public restroom to plead with her — would be proven completely out of touch with reality, she surely imagined.
The only Democrat to be proven right, Sinema certainly envisioned, would be Kirsten [sic] Sinema, whose own Arizona colleague Mark Kelly (who, by the way, she didn’t lift a finger to help in his re-election campaign), will even have gone down to defeat.
“If only Mark had listened to me,” Sinema surely was thinking she’d be saying, even if only to herself — “If only they’d all listened to me!”
So, you can then only imagine what was going on in Sinema’s well-coiffed head as election results came in one-by-one on the night of November 8th and in the days following.
Every one of those Democrats ran as supporters of raising the minimum wage, raising taxes on the wealthy and ending the filibuster so we could codify Roe v. Wade into law and pass voting right legislation — all of which Sinema opposed, sometimes in dramatic fashion.
And some of those incumbent senators were in states in which the environment was enormously difficult, such as Cortez Masto, who won in Nevada even as Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak lost, and Raphael Warnock, who prevailed even as Republicans won in every other statewide race in Georgia.
Share The Signorile Report
Oh, yes, the one-two punch had to be the Georgia Senate runoff, in which Sinema might have been secretly praying Walker would win, which would help her salvage something out of her grave miscalculations. Maybe she could then announce she was becoming a Republican (or an independent caucusing with the GOP), and hand control of the Senate to the GOP?
Instead, Sinema was left with no moves except the risky one she took.
She looked at the polling and realized she couldn’t win a Democratic primary in Arizona in 2024. While her running as an independent in the general election might split the Democratic vote and hand the seat to a Republican — and thus, announcing she was becoming an independent was a way for her to send a warning to Democrats about challenging her — it could also go the other way, as I noted over the weekend. Sinema could be left high and dry in a 2024 race while Democrats vote for the Democratic candidate, Republicans vote for the Republican candidate, and independents split between both.
So, it’s risky, but it’s all she’s got. It’s two years away, and surely there will be lots of discussion about what could happen — and a lot of planning by Democrats to thwart Sinema’s move.
But what is clear is that Arizona’s electorate has shifted much more rapidly than Sinema, as well as many political observers, had previously thought. The 2020 election in fact helped to speed that movement, something that became clear to many. Sinema, however, was so wed to the fantasy she’d created of being the new John McCain that she opted for self-delusion. She was so full of herself, believing she was so politically savvy — and surely being told that by sycophants around her — that she didn’t feel the desert earth shifting beneath her.
In that way, Sinema’s withdrawal from the Democratic Party is a vindication for many of us of how wrong her strategy was and how right the strategy of all those Democratic candidates who won — who ran on getting the base out, rather than pandering to the mythical middle — is for the Democratic party moving forward.
None of this is to downplay how self-centered and narcissistic Sinema is as a politician, nor how detrimental her action can be for Democrats in 2024, during a dangerous time in America. She’s ruthless, and vile, putting herself before democracy and the American people. And we can’t underplay that as we plan for 2024.
But it’s pretty fantastic that, after the 2022 mid-terms, Sinema, rather than crowing that she was right, is in a political crisis of her own making. She’s running scared as Democrats have surged, as they’ve cemented a blueprint running on abortion rights, voting rights, threats to democracy, and progressive economic policies. Her exit is indeed a measure of the party’s success.
