most important part of any blue collar job is finding a good hiding place to sit on your phone. second most important part is making sure that the tools hanging from your belt are properly phallic

Me: [lying on the therapist couch, gesticulating wildly] I just don’t get why so many productions have Romeo and especially Juliet be so damn hyper/cheerful before, during, and even after the ball (yeah, I’ve seen it live on stage in person. It was cringe as all hell). R&J are many things, but cheerful is not one of them. Romeo is gloomy as all hell, due to 1) Rosaline refusing to open her thighs, but also 2) the fact that he clearly doesn’t fit in with this feud-stricken life of Verona. Juliet isn’t gung-ho for this ball, either. She makes it understood that she doesn’t dream of marriage, so this whole “check out Paris and see if you like him” thing is pure business for her. Sure, she may have fun dancing, but she will still have to wrangle with her mother pushing Paris on her. Instead of trying to make R&J into the glib extroverts they’re not, why not play up their alienation? Have Juliet dance boring stately dances with several men. Have her practiced smiles disappear when she thinks no one is looking. Have Romeo be the only one not dancing. Have Juliet be the one dancing but looking longingly out into the crowd. Have her see Romeo, and Romeo see her. Let them experience true happiness when they are together, let them gush them. Otherwise, you just paint them as silly, stupid teenagers whose romance is just one capricious party hook-up turned deadly.
Therapist: Which is, of course, the intention behind this change.
Me: Bingo.
#romeo and juliet#rj meta#r&j meta#don’t think i don’t know#when the wind is southerly i know a hawk from a handsaw#again the french musical understood the assignment#poor juliet trying to have a good time while paris and tybalt and her mother buzzing around#i remember a branagh-directed version that had juliet straight up drinking champagne at the balcony#ew ew ew#the zefirelli version was legit too#even the lurhmann version didn’t do this shit as i recall#oh wait no they made paris adorkable and i think juliet was amused by him#fuck it then

The only community I accept "AI can't be real art" from is the woodworking community, because they already tend to think that nothing can be art if you used anything invented past the 15th century to make it. Electric sanders are for people too lazy to learn to use hand planes. Circular saws are for tech-obsessed hobbyists who don't understand the true value of woodworking. I've actually seen people say pocket holes are artless hacks that let normies call themselves woodworkers without having to learn any actual skill.
I mean I'm not saying they're right, they're smug and obnoxious, but at least they're consistent about it
#ai discourse#okay most woodworking communities aren't like this but there is some real hand-tool fetishization going on in a lot of them#i mean yes it can be very impressive and a great show of skill. i love seeing traditional joinery!#but like. c'mon man. there is not inherent moral value in using a handsaw instead of a table saw

This is such a beautiful little button closer to the episode. From Hawk and a Handsaw.
This to me is the best of Benton Fraser.
He dared to be honest with Walter. It wasn't about the case or the right here. It was caring about this man who lost someone, and why, and Benton Fraser choosing to relate. He got real and shared a real personal moment of his life with Walter. Of grief. And it brought this. Healing. Connection.
No big speeches or dramatics. Just two people who talk, ask how are you, are you struggling, and decide it's ok to be. This is Fraser's impact, seen and acknowledged, happily and quietly.

jason and amelia's friendship was terrible.
amelia didn't become friends with him willingly, or because she saw him and was like "oh i want to be friends with that guy!"... the teacher had to ask amelia to go and talk to jason... the teacher made jason's classmates talk to him because he was THAT lonely.
amelia was made to believe that he was the only good thing in the world. jason cared about her not as a person, but as something who could provide him use. she helped with his business, she stuck by his side when she should've left, she was his first friend (ONLY friend). and in amelia's eyes, she couldn't drop jason because she was all that jason had. she was scared of talking to other people because of jason, couldn't do things without considering jason's opinion on it. she hated him but she couldn't do anything. her mom advised her to leave jason so many times and she couldn't go through with it. because she was codependent on him and jason knew that.
jason prioritised his own needs over amelia's every single time because he thought amelia would never leave. jason is manipulative and he knows he's manipulative. he knows when amelia's scared and he knows how to utilise her fear. he's smart, does things for his benefit and no one else's. but he isn't smart enough to realise that amelia never liked him. they were close friends. he gave her everything, he kept her safe from the worst people, they were supposed to be together forever, they made promises. he trusted amelia enough to reveal his secrets. tell her how he killed someone on accident. when amelia yelled at him instead, jason — in his delirious state, sick, stressed and overwhelmed — tried to reason with her. it was no longer about the incident for him.
she rejected him. how? how could amelia reject him when he gave her everything? amelia saved herself and thank god she did ... without jason her life is better. maybe she's still scared of things because of how jason fed her lies. maybe she's still affected by how he was her closest friend for like 20 years of her life... and how she had to kill him. even the good moments in their friendship was manipulative...
the cycle of how jason thinks is so fucking weird. he wants praise so he gets praise from his friend who uplifts him and then he gets praise from the people who come to his business and his friend is the only one who supports his business so he can't get rid of her! it's all about!!!! his reputation!!! his worth!!! it's always about jason and never anyone else!!!
AUGJEJGJGHG I LOVE AMELIA SHE SUFFERED TOO MUCH
AND THE FACT THEY WERE NEVER IN AN ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP OR DID ANYTHING ROMANTIC. THEY WERE JUST FRIENDS. BUT IF THEY EVER WERE IN AN ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP IT WOULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH HARDER FOR HER TO LEAVE HIM
and i feel like all the affection in the friendship wasn't shown by amelia but rather jason. he is known for giving her gifts (like the music box) and giving compliments but only because it's like the only way to keep her? i guess? he could fucking care less about amelia herself, which SUCKS.
