You do something incredibly hairbrained -- you put on the selkie skin and swim. Or you try to swim. Your first attempt beaches you and creates a minor media sensation. Fortunately authorities and scientists respond quickly. Unfortunately, authorities and scientists respond quickly and place you in an aquarium.

After a few weeks of getting used to being a seal, the people in charge of the aquarium decide that since you're so young and so out of place, they should transfer you to a facility that can care for you better, and then those guys can decide whether to keep you or release you back into the wild. So you end up on a transport to England. That's the first leg of your journey done.

In the meantime, it's just so EASY to be a seal. Nobody expects anything of you except that you eat and sleep and thrive. You don't even need to be concerned with what wild seals are concerned with, since you're captive. Your brain tells you that you're a seal and that's that -- nothing you need to grow up into, no bigger community you have to work to be a part of, no complicated identities to be negotiate...But sometimes you catch yourself thinking that way and feel embarrassed, like you're giving up on life or betraying your heritage. And you think about your family and wonder how worried they must be.

Once the tranquilizers wear off in England, you decide you need to make a break for it, so you remember to be human, if nothing else. That night, when the workers leave the facility, you emerge from the water and, with quite a bit of fumbling, strip off the skin and climb the ladder. You've barely stepped onto the railing before the night watchman suddenly flashes her handtorch in your face.

She lets out a trail of expletives that you're sure your parents would make you rinse out your mouth for saying, followed by a scandalized and embarrassed, "I told him to bury that thing!"

Years ago, a sailor sold a “rug” to your family’s pawn shop. It turns out to be a selkie skin! How will you return it to its original owner as a poor teenager in the South Pacific?

Last Post of the Summer???

Salutations my fellow nerd!!

Let me just start by saying that I'm very excited that this is your last week away!! Yes, you will be working a 9-5 job when you get back, and yes, I work nights a lot of times, but just knowing that my best friend will be right down the street again is very comforting and exciting. I also TOTALLY agree with you on the late night solitude of suburbia and how beautiful it is. In the city, any metropolis, there is some semblance of a nightlife; however, the ‘burbs is just completely dead save the few dimly lit windows due to the TVs. I can’t help but think back to my little escapade last semester when the Nidster, Jake the Snake, and I went to go wait for sunrise out on that hill that overlooked Nashville. Even my pastor today at church was telling a story about how his best friend and him were recently hiking out in Cali when he woke up really early at the campsite and just took in the beauty of silence and the stars and nature. Maybe this is just a theme in my life and God is trying to tell me something, but I just absolutely RELISH those quiet and quaint moments in life that seem tailor-made for you. I just thought it was awesome that you thought about that kind of moment and how we both appreciate them.

ONTO MY WEEK!! Welp, I'm working a lot. And I found out that my car is gonna need repairs of up to $1000 so that I can take her back to school with me. So that is a nice welcome to adulthood. But God works in mysterious ways and I have been getting quite a few hours at the theater, and while they are the late shift, I'm not complaining because there are so many people that could be working instead of me, but they trust me to be there and do the work. And so on the topic of working, I just wanna put my two cents in on your job future dilemma. I think having this option is an awesome opportunity. Sure, maybe it isn't the most exciting thing to do and yes, your fears of falling into the pitfalls of the mundane are very real and these decisions can set us down a path that we never expected or wanted, but there is a positive spin. Aside from the fact that it will give you a guaranteed job in the summer, you begin to grow your portfolio. Now I'm not talking portfolio based on work environments because it’s the same place, but rather a portfolio of people. While it sucks and seems unfair (but hey! life’s unfair), in the world, it really is all about who you know, not what you know. So just think of it as an opportunity to make new relationships that could benefit you later on down the road, or to grow and strengthen the ones that you have made already. Just something to think about, but don't let it consume you.

The rest of my week was pretty ho hum. My mom’s birthday was Thursday, but I had to work so I barely saw her. My dad made this card from cardboard that was about as tall as my mom and she really enjoyed that. I, loving to have my plans and all, came up with something to do for her since I was gonna be gone. Since our main car is in the shop, I have been chauffeuring a lot, which includes picking my mom up from work. So earlier in the day, I stopped at an Edible Arrangements store and picked her up something along with a card. Before I left the house, I put it and the card on the counter where she would find it when I dropped her off at home. So I picked her up from the train station and dropped her off at the house and went on to work. I got a text like a minute later from her saying how surprised she was and thanks and yadda yadda. I was just happy that I could do something for her rather than just get her a card.

To answer your question, I really have had to think about this. I definitely know that earth would be my last option cuz whoa, I made a rock move and it’s just not my thing, too gritty. I'm more of a fantastical and grand person as you know. So I don't think water would suit me because it is too shy and precocious for me. Yeah the ocean is unforgiving and battering, but I'm not a cruel bully of an ocean, nor am I a hippie-like go with the flow stream. So that leaves air and fire. My heart says fire, but I can’t commit to it fully. Having control over the air is a VERY powerful thing. I mean, it’s ALL AROUND us. I could fly! I could save and be a representative of the good. The air also kinda personifies me. A warm summer breeze is like a relaxed, comforting hug that soothes. I like to think that somewhat is me. But it also is violent and chaotic. Where does the wind come from (where did I come from? how did I even come to that conclusion?) and it makes its own way. You can attest to some of this and my chaotic nature. Also, if in a battle, the air would beat all. It can destroy the earth (hello! explosion!....I mean erosion!!! always need a spongebob reference) Blows water to away and dries it up. I wouldn't drown because I could just summon the air into my lungs, BOOM! And fire, I simply create a vacuum and suffocate the fire. And to add onto it, I could manipulate the air to have a quasi-telekinetic thing going for me!! Yet despite all of this, fire just calls to me!! First, and most importantly, I see fire as red, my favorite color. Also, fire is associated with power. Like, if some guy came walking at you with his hands on fire or glowing hot, would you not poo your pants or run? That’s what I thought! And just the image of conjuring fireballs and throwing them is AWESOME!! It’s also probably one of the more showier elements too. Like boom, fireworks; boom, bonfire; boom, handtorch; boom, Chinese new years dragon eats/melts your face off!!! Just think how cool (haha no pun/paradox intended) this would all be. But I also see how fire is a portrayal of evil and I am definitely not about that life. And yeah yeah I know that you control how you use your powers, but something has to be said for how in every movie or book or show it is fire that symbolizes evil and destruction, right? I really cannot decide, which seems like a cop out, but it’s how I feel and you can deal with it! I will leave it up to you to determine. I either have fire or air. Good luck deciding!

Just to wrap it up, cannot wait to see you again!! Hurry home so we can be crazy and weird together again. My recommendation for the week is music related: on Spotify, listen to either (or both) the Smallpools radio playlist and The Head and the Heart radio playlist. Also check out Misterwives!! I say all of this because I have already chosen a few concerts to go to with some college friends once we get back. They include a Smallpools/Misterwives concert, a Moontaxi concert, a The Head and the Heart concert, and maybe a Kaleo concert. So I have really been into this kinda music for the past week or so.
