Module d'écriture inclusive Forumactif

Bonjour/bonsoir à toustes ! Puisque mon taff à la base c'est plus de coder que de grapher, je vous partage aujourd'hui un petit module permettant de transformer les points simples en points médians sur forum actif. Pourquoi ce module ? Si certains adons sur navigateurs permettent de le faire automatiquement, ils ne sont malheureusement pas disponible sur tout les navigateurs web. Il y a aussi des raccourcis claviers, mais ça peut rallonger le temps d'écriture et/ou poser quelques difficultés aux RPGistes handi qui ont besoin de faire une manipulation en plus lors de l'écriture. ça permet aussi à celleux qui ne veulent pas installer un addon spécifiquement pour ça (on vous voit celleux qui écrivent leurs RP depuis le PC du boulot) (je suis aussi coupable) de tout de même transformer leurs points de ponctuation simples en points médians, mais aussi à celleux écrivant depuis leur portable de le faire facilement. Utiliser le module : Lorsque vous écrivez votre RP/message en écriture inclusive et utilisez des simples points, comme pour le mot écrivain.e par exemple. Prévisualisez votre message une fois le RP terminé, puis cliquez sur le bouton "en inclusif". Un pop up en haut de votre fenêtre s'ouvriras. Confirmez jusqu'au bout, enregistrez dans le presse papier et collez le nouveau contenu de votre RP/message modifié. Tout vos mots en inclusifs, séparés d'un point simple se transforment en point médian comme ceci : écrivain·e En cas de catastrophe et de bug du module, utilisez le ctr+z (ou commande+z sous Mac) pour retrouver votre texte d'origine. Postez le tel quel, actualisez la page avec F5 puis éditez votre message en utilisant de nouveau le bouton "En inclusif" pour avoir le bon texte dans votre presse papier.

Installer le module :

Créez une nouvelle page Javascript dans votre panneau d'admin via le Module et sélectionnez "sur toutes les pages". Copiez/collez le Javacript.

2) Ensuite, dans votre template posting_body (au sein de la partie "Poster & Messages privés") ajoutez le bouton En Inclusif  où vous le souhaitez :

hello there! i'm not sure anybody else has asked, so thank you for being among the first! (or just straight up the first, my memory is goofysilly)

i wanted to fill a role on the ship that seemed realistic and aligned enough with my own skills! granted, i am so not a coder! my actual job is an artist and moderate for art groups. i hire coders for my own site instead of doing it myself lol. but that's a hyper-specific job that wouldn't be needed on the Tulpar, and i did take python classes in highschool and know some limited html/css, so... coder it was!

after putting that into the story, i realized that i could actually do something fairly powerful with it, such as having the reader character straight up access stuff in the cockpit through bug fixing and getting a little nosy while working. a job in tech could certainly come in handy if one wanted to change the gears of fate, even if only a little... 🤔

also, in the chapter named "twenty-five" (which isn't 25, haha, it's like chapter 23) i also sprinkled in a little bit of my special interest in nuclear (disaster) history with mentioning the therac-25! malfunctioning code can sometimes be a life or death issue, and while that never presented itself in the canon of mouthwashing, i figured it felt realistic enough given the tulpar's age and pony express's tendency to cut corners.

Coding professionals provide an invaluable service to physician practices and hospitals as they are truly the front line defense as far as ensuring reimbursements are near or even at maximum for their patients. The medical team works very hard for the patients they serve, and they should be reimbursed for it appropriately. Correct and appropriate medical codes will allow the office to recoup as much as possible from the services they provide. Current procedural terminology (CPT) codes are Level I codes within the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) classification system. The codes are copyrighted and published exclusively by the American Medical Association (AMA). They are updated annually to depict changes in treatments and procedures, delete unused codes and provide more detail for existing codes. CPT codes are five digits that represent physician services. There is an additional level of codes -- HCPCS Level II -- set up to cover medical services and goods used by other providers. I cannot actually tell you how this works with a screen reader (as I am not confident in my accessibility competency). But what I CAN tell you is that while this would technically work, I would not recommend using this exact method

Use <span title="hover text">fic text</span> instead!

Here's why:

First, some Vocab:

A Tag is the thing between the < and > brackets that has a name. <div> is a tag. <p> is a tag. <i> and <b> used to be tags, but are obsolete as of now, and it is recommended to use <em> and <strong> respectively. There are lots of tags, which all do different things and serve diff purposes.

My favorite resource for HTML tags is the handy comprehensive list hosted on W3Schools, because it keeps track of obsolescence and gives definitions and examples. Remember that not ALL tags that exist are usable on AO3, but you can cross reference the full list with the AO3 HTML guide.

Anyway.

MOST Tags usually need a start tag and an end tag, like in <p>Sentence goes here</p> so that the Stuff (browser, webpage, etc) knows exactly where and what the Tag is affecting/targeting. The stuff between the Start and End is what the Tag affects. This is how OP selects the 'foreign language' (language that isn't the primary language the fic is written in) for the hover effect.

To make this hover effect, what OP is doing is taking advantage of an Attribute. In HTML, an Attribute is a kind of metadata for a tag. There are lots of attributes that all do different things.

The Title attribute is a kind of "Global" attribute, meaning it is largely usable across most all tags (with notable exceptions), and has a standard function which works in most cases.

The Title Attribute is used to log basic extra information about what is in the tag. It is often used for explaining abbreviations, naming conventions, and lots of other things. It's a very good attribute for this purpose!

A quick google search tells me that most screen readers can access and read this attribute, but again, I'm not experienced with screen reader accessibility so the nuances of this is not my wheelhouse.

I am aware that this sort of thing is exactly why accurate and clean tag/attribute choice is so important though...

Which brings me to why I recommend this change to OP's Idea:

The DIV tag and the SPAN tag are both kinds of tags which are used to segment out parts of a page. They are actually mirror pairs, of sorts, serving identical functions in different hierarchical niches.

In this, I think we have a very good start.

However

DIV tags are default Block display tags. In general, they are on the same rung of tag hierarchy as a <p> (paragraph) tag, which means (unless you are getting very fancy and have a technical reason to use DIV specifically), you do not want to use DIV for embedding information inside a preexisting paragraph.

In contrast, SPAN displays as Inline by default. To make a comparison, a <span> tag is much more alike to <i>, <b> <em> and <strong>: they are all tags which are meant to affect the text without disrupting the shape of how it is displayed, in-line with the rest of the paragraph.

Some of display issues OP is probably talking about would likely be solved by changing from DIV to SPAN. Most issues with display on AO3 have to do with how Rich Text ends up translating into HTML (re: badly, because richtext has a stupid amount of meta that is inconsistent from source program/app to source program/app and often confuses poor AO3's converter).

A Simple Trick for Fic Writers

Hey, if you're a fic writer and a character speaks in a different language, you don't just have to add the translation in the notes. Use the following HTML coding to add 'text on hover' to the word(s). If the reader is on a computer they can hover over the text to see the translation.

Here are some examples from a fic on my AO3.

This coding here <div title="a fool, idiot (lit. emptyhead)">Eyn utreekov</div> will show this on hover.

This next example shows that you can add a lot of text. The formatting is the same as above.

PS: When doing this, there may be spacing issues, but you can edit the text through AO3's html or rich text editor. From there you can add italics (like I did), bold, etc, and fix any weird spacing issues. Just be careful not to delete the coding that you worked so hard on 😂

Also, some it’s important to be a well rounded person sometimes. Sometimes learning something outside of your comfort zone will make you realize something you didn’t, either about the stuff you already like or new stuff, and sometimes it literally is related even if indirectly. Some people have very narrow concepts of what is and isn’t related to their major or career path and it can be to their detriment. “Why do I have to learn history as an artist?” Because art doesn’t exist in a vacuum and most art didn’t just spring out of the aether and by learning history you can better understand the expectations and implied rules of art or find new inspirations.

Sometimes there’s stuff you didn’t realize would come in handy not to mention what if you change your mind? What if you realize you don’t want to do something but have almost 0 points of reference for anything else? I switched from computer science to art and I might switch again to something else but what if I ignored everything that wasn’t directly computer science related and dropped all my art classes?

Things are more interconnect than some might believe.
