“kilmer” theory post
Tumblr media
A compilation of information + explanation/theory post of the song “Kilmer”, episode 0 of the “Shama” trilogy by Niru Kajitsu and WOOMA. A song about Kalmia’s past.
tw: rape, abuse
Niru Kajitsu’s video description:
絶たれたベルベットロープは二度と戻らない
To that severed velvet rope, I will never return.
This story is confirmed by WOOMA to be inspired by the Scorpius myth in Greek mythology.
Characters
Tumblr media
Character sheet by WOOMA from their twitter.
L → R : Gui Oakes, Livara, Armis, Ron, Kalmia
Plot
Tumblr media
The story begins with Kalmia shown imprisoned in a cell. She is freed from her chains and escapes with someone (who is assumed to be her mother) both disguised under hoods to keep their appearance hidden from the public eye.
Tumblr media
The two run away and seek refuge in a church, where their kind are protected and hidden. Later, the church gets raided by a group of people called “Alacran” and Kalmia’s kind are abducted and murdered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kalmia and her mother are attacked by Ron, an Alacran member. Kalmia’s mother is killed immediately, but Kalmia is spared by Gui, the leader of Alacran. It could be that Kalmia was spared because of her features, specifically her heterochromia (more on that later). It could also be because of the fact that unlike her mother, Kalmia was a “pure” virgin, which meant she had higher value as a sex slave.
Tumblr media
Kalmia is then brought to Gui’s residence as a prisoner. There she meets Livara and Armis, Gui’s maid-servants and possibly head of the slaves in the household. Livara seems to be a normal human (who bears a resemblance to Clay Pool from the first episode “Shama”), and Armis is the same species as Kalmia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this shot, a pair of broken handcuffs is seen, implying that Gui decided to release Kalmia from imprisonment (and into his bedroom). There is also a piece of paper with the number 6 (or 9?) written on it, which could imply that Kalmia is Gui’s 6th slave. If it’s 9, it could be a reference to Kalmia’s prisoner number in Shama, which is also 9.
Tumblr media
A jar of red eyes can be seen, which suggests that Gui harvests the eyes of Kalmia’s species.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is implied that Livara treated Kalmia kindly and took care of her while Armis disliked her. In the scene where Gui and Kalmia sleep together, Armis is seen watching from afar in jealousy, suggesting that Armis holds feelings for Gui and is jealous of his relationship with Kalmia as he grew increasingly fond of her.
The lyrics use the word “velvet rope” a lot, as in the red velvet rope that is used as a gate to limit entry into usually luxury/special places that are meant for people who have special access. This might be symbolic for how Gui gives Kalmia special treatment and “love” by letting her in his “velvet rope” or his world, making her believe that she is someone special to him. However, by going to the other side of the rope, Kalmia is imprisoned to him. His “velvet rope”, or his “love” is what ties Kalmia down and restricts her freedom.
そこに愛は無い 愛は無いと 喚いていた
破られたベルベットロープ
There’s no love there, no love there, I scream
A torn apart velvet rope
“there”, means the other side of the rope, in other words “by Gui’s side”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Gui tells Kalmia “I’ll take care of you until you die.”, Kalmia gets a flashback to her mother’s death. In these shots, her mother’s eyes are blacked out, (hinting that her eyes were taken by Gui).
It could be that Kalmia was just triggered by the word die, or that she took Gui’s words in a way that she thought meant that he’ll kill her soon, or since “until you die” meant the rest of Kalmias life, and Kalmia’s species have a longer life-span than humans, it would imply that even after she outlives Gui, Kalmia still wouldn’t be free and would still be in the slavery industry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, a group of slaves are lined up and Armis is seen holding a tray of drinks in preparation for a party, which I believe was a party to auction off slaves. Kalmia attended the party not as an auctioned slave or servant, rather her fancy dress implied that she was meant to attend Gui’s party as someone important (again, reference to the velvet rope metaphor).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Armis offers Kalmia a drink that was poisoned, but Livara stops Kalmia before she drinks it, saving her life. Armis is angered that Livara intervened with her plan to kill Kalmia.
Armis might’ve tried to trick Kalmia into drinking the poison to kill her, but I also think it was possible that there was no deception involved and Armis deliberately told Kalmia to kill herself. Kalmia was visibly miserable in Gui’s residence, and it could be that it was a well known fact in the household that Kalmia wanted to die, so Armis simply offered her death and Livara then convinced Kalmia not to kill herself. However, as this story is based on the Scorpius myth, I think it was most likely the former (which I will explain more later on).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kalmia then pours the poisonous drink onto a sword instead and attacks Gui in the middle of the party.
はいはい何も問題ないわって 吐き捨てる少女が
故に愛は無い 愛は無いと
悟って歌う
断ち切るわベルベットロープ
The girl who always just said “Yes, I’m fine, nothing’s wrong.”
Because there’s no love here, no love here
Now, she sings in understanding,
“I’ll sever this velvet rope.”
Kalmia kills Gui, avenges her mother, and gains her freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the video, a bloody aftermath of the party can be seen with the guests of the party dead on the floor. Ron is also seen dead, and Livara is seen with blood on her, implying that she murdered him and perhaps some of the guests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
戻らないベルベットロープ
Never again will she return to the velvet rope.
Livara watches as Kalmia leaves without looking back.
I’m still not entirely sure what the title “Kilmer” means, aside from the fact that it is a name. Some Japanese viewers have suggested that when romanized into Kilmaa (Kirumaa → Kilmaa), it is an anagram for Kalmia.
Also small note: the scene at the very beginning of the video could have taken place in the future since Kalmia has short hair, implying that she came back to the church, perhaps to repent after the events of Shama.

Characters + Theories
*official character profiles taken and translated from WOOMA’s instagram.
Gui Oakes → Orion
Tumblr media
組織“Alacran”(アラクラン)の頭
He is the head of an organization called “Alacran”.
Gui is the leader of Alacran (Spanish for “scorpion”), an organization that is involved in the black market trade of Kalmia’s species. His character is based on Orion, a great huntsman in Greek Mythology. Orion is also the personification of the Scorpius constellation. Orion was often described as a “handsome giant” and served a king as a huntsman for a while before he was blinded and exiled for raping the king’s daughter. It is possible that Gui was blind to an extent and hunted Kalmia’s species for their eyes, as it is implied that he collects them. Also, scorpions have poor eyesight.
It is possible that Kalmia’s heterochromia was one of the reasons Gui didn’t kill her. Gui was seeking for the perfect pair of eyes, and since Kalmia had heterochromia, he thought her eyes were defects and therefore useless for him to take.
Ron → Sirius
Tumblr media
ガイの手下
大雑把な性格だからよくガイに怒られる…
Gui’s right hand man. Due to his rough and rowdy nature, he is often scolded by Gui…
Ron is possibly based on Sirius, who is Orion’s hunting dog. He seems to be a manic collector type of person, and has an obsession with collecting the body parts of Kalmia’s species.
Hanna Mosco/Kalmia → Artemis
Tumblr media
角や長い髪、変わった目の色を持つ部族で常に人目を避けて生きてきた。
“カルミア”はガイから与えられた名前
With her horns, long hair, and different colored eyes, she lived with her kind in hiding from humans. She was given the name “Kalmia” by Gui.
Kalmia's people were hunted and trafficked for slavery and the commodity of their body parts (horns and eyes). They were also probably sold as sex slaves because they don't age/age differently and stay "eternally young and beautiful". Originally named Hanna Mosco, Hanna was given the name “Kalmia” by Gui after being captured by him. Kalmia, in flower language means “perseverance” or “treachery”, which I think relates to Kalmia being a survivor, but also someone who deceives people as demonstrated in Shama. Some theorize that the church where Kalmia sought sanctuary is the same church which Clay Pool from Shama was raised in, meaning they might’ve met each other in the past.
Kalmia’s role in the story is based on the goddess Artemis, who kills the huntsman Orion in the Scorpius myth. In some accounts of the myth, Artemis killed Orion with her arrows after he rapes her handmaiden, Opius. In another version, Artemis is tricked into killing Orion by Apollo, her twin brother, who was jealous of Artemis and Orion’s relationship.
??? (Kalmia’s Mother) → Leto
Kalmia’s mother, possibly based on Leto, the mother of Artemis. In the story, Orion hunted together with Leto and Artemis, which eventually led to his death.
Livara → Gaia
Tumblr media
No information was given about Livara from WOOMA, however it is quite clear that she bears a resemblance to Clay Pool with her white hair and blue eyes. Many people theorize that the two are either related or the same person.
Personally, I think that Livara is Clay’s mother, or at least related by blood to her in some way. During the flashbacks that play in these shots, it can be seen that the young girl in the flashback is the same girl as young Clay in Shama, which suggests that the older woman in the flashback is Livara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Young Clay in Shama
As confirmed by WOOMA on their instagram, Tate Brown, one of the security guards and Clay’s friend in Shama, was a child during the events of Kilmer, as seen in this shot:
Tumblr media
This would mean that Clay would have also been a child around this time and that Kalmia’s species age differently from humans, or do not age at all, since Kalmia’s mother looks as young as her and Kalmia’s appearance has remained relatively the same throughout Kilmer, Wozwald, and Shama. The next time Clay and Kalmia would meet (which is in Shama), Clay would have grown into an adult while Kalmia remains looking the same. The physical similarities between Livara and Clay is probably the reason why Kalmia was attracted to Clay and approached her, since Kalmia was reminded of her savior (Livara). It could also be theorized that Kalmia actually remembers Clay from the church and knew that Clay used to be bullied as a child for being a lesbian, therefore she knew that she could take advantage of Clay.
I think Livara’s character is based on Gaia, aka Mother Earth in Greek Mythology. In the most popular version of the Scorpius myth, Gaia created the Scorpion to kill Orion after Orion bragged that he would hunt down and kill all the beasts of the world. In this case, it would be Livara who created the poison that killed Gui and the guests of the party. The poisoning of the party seemed to be a plan that was carried out by both Livara and Armis, but with Livara as Gaia in mind, I think it was originally Livara’s idea to poison the drinks and free the slaves, which is why she knew that the drinks were poisoned.
Armis → Apollo
Tumblr media
リヴァラより前にアラクランに捕えられガイに仕えている。密かにガイに好意を寄せる
Was brought into Alacran by Gui and has been serving him long before Livara. Secretly harbors affection for Gui.
Armis’ character is based on Apollo, who is Artemis’ sibling, which reflects how Kalmia and Armis are the same species. In the story, Apollo is jealous of Orion and Artemis’ love and tricks Artemis into killing Orion. Armis is the “jealous” person of this story and tries to trick Kalmia into killing herself.
Armis was not seen in the ending after the events of the auction party. It could be that she escaped, or killed herself to join Gui in death.
Conclusion
This song was very straightforward with its lyrics, which is why I didn’t analyze much in that aspect. Many details concerning Clay and Kalmia’s past are still uncertain, but the events of Kilmer clearly explains how Kalmia’s view on “love” in Shama came about. The fact that she continued her life as a prostitute even after leaving Alacran may be because it was the only way for her to survive, or perhaps because she couldn’t hide her appearance and her species was already associated with prostitution she decided to embrace it and become a femme fatale who deceives men, and in a way, choosing to live like that was Kalmia’s version of revenge against Gui.
Anyway, that’s all I can decipher for now so thanks for reading! and thank you to Asuka for helping me out with these theories as always! Feel free to send me your own thoughts and theories about the song, I’ll be constantly updating this post with whatever info i find!
