Cole’s second solo album which is similar to the stripped-down, acoustic(ish) vibe of Paul Weller’s far more successful Wild Wood, but released two years earlier. Perhaps because he was a little ahead of his time this album didn’t fare so well and is not that well known. If he brought it out now in an era when everyone seems to be raving about Taylor Swift ‘going folk’ then, who knows, he might be Top Ten again. Lloyd Cole, from his work with the Commotions through to his solo work, has always been an emotionally intelligent, literate, songwriter, similar to Roddy Frame in telling commonplace stories of love, hate and human failings from a distinctive angle and novelist’s eye. It’s low-key, jazzy noir pop, some songs with full orchestra backing almost going full Bacharach, others with a more minimalist arrangement. It’s subtle, sophisticated stuff, though I confess whereas I found much of it singalongable at the time, some songs were immediately forgettable afterwards. That is, for the last track, which is my favourite and the reason I bought the album on its release in 1991. She’s A Girl and I’m A Man is the ‘rockiest’ track on the album, with a great, albeit simple, guitar riff that suits Cole’s gravelly voice and the Carver-esque love story. The album title is in fact a reference to Raymond Carver. I remember being rather astonished to find Lloyd Cole playing a solo show, just him and guitar sitting on a high stool like a folk singer, in a bar we stumbled into somewhere in the Antipodes in the year 2000/1. I really can’t recall whether it was Australia or New Zealand, I just remember us being the few members of the audience who knew most of the words to his Commotions-era songs. It may have been low key for a man who’s penned four Top 20 albums, but it was a great gig. In more recent years, Cole has been exploring his electronic side, curating an album of his favourite Hans-Joachim Roedelius tracks and then collaborating on an album together. [Grosses Wasser] [Cluster] [LP] [1979] . If the cover design says something about the content, then the cover fits Cluster's "Grosses Wasser" very well. The music is minimalistic like the cover. . Moebius and Roedelius are known for their minimalistic sound structures in their solo projects as well as in their various collaborations, e.g. with Brian Eno. . "Grosses Wasser" (great water) is not a pure electronic album. A Steinway grand piano is used as well as human voices, percussion, guitar and electric bass. The two artists knew how to use the most modern electronics available at the time, provided by producer Peter Baumann. . Here the whole greatness of their skills shows. Used sparingly but purposefully, the electronics together with the acoustic instruments make up the special charm of this album. . While listening to this record I never actually saw water but I see myself lying on a green meadow. Above me the sky is dotted with beautiful huge clouds that tell new mysterious stories as I pass by, but stop, in the far distance I hear sounds that resemble those of a "big water", maybe a lake with all its life and scenarios... .
