Jury Awards Aasylei Loggervale And Her Two Daughters $8.25 Million In Wrongful Detention By Deputies At California Starbucks
A federal jury found that sheriff's deputies wrongly detained a Black family at a Northern California Starbucks and ordered compensation of $8.25 million.
Aasylei Loggervale and her two daughters had pulled into a Starbucks in Castro Valley, about 25 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco, in September 2019 when Alameda County sheriff's deputies handcuffed them in connection with a string of auto thefts, according to their federal lawsuit.
Jurors found in the plaintiffs' favor this month and set damages at $2.75 million for each of the three.
"This is vindication and validation for the Loggervales that they've been wronged, and that means a lot," Craig Peters, their attorney, said Thursday.
The deputies, who are white, are alleged to have told them they were being investigated for "car burglaries committed by unidentified Black men" in recent months, the plaintiffs said.
Loggervale refused to show her driver's license as she and her daughters, who were 19 and 17 at the time, firmly but calmly "stated that they had not done anything wrong and had no connection whatsoever to any auto burglaries," their civil complaint said.
All three were handcuffed as deputies searched their car, purses and cellphones before they were released with no citations or criminal charges.
A federal jury in the Northern District of California found that deputies and Alameda County violated the constitutional rights of Aasylei Loggervale and her daughters, Aaottae Loggervale and Aasylei Hardge-Loggervale, and breached state civil protections against police harassment.
“The community’s trust in my agency is foundational to my mission of maintaining a positive relationship with those we serve," Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez said in a statement Thursday. -(source: nbc news)

February is Black History Month. At Just Breathe Ministries, Inc, we are giving tribute to two amazing women. The first tribute goes to Chanie Hudson Hardge, my grandmother, whose birthday is today Feb. 4. and is enjoying Heaven’s celebration. She was a woman who enjoyed life and embraced change with determination and courage. Our second tribute is in honor of my mother, Ethel Hudson Abrams, who was the first female African American on the School Board in Thomasville, GA. My mom exemplifies such a calm, peaceful, yet strong inner spirit in all that she does. If I had to choose three words to describe her they would be: devoted, humble, and strong. Devoted to the faithful study of God’s word (church), devotion to family and friends. It is through her humbleness in spirit that she sees the good in people and her strength is in the power of the Holy Spirit that works in and through her. It is through these two women and their example, “I am who I am today.” Our prayer for you mom is that the Lord continues to sustain you each and every day. We at Just Breathe Ministries honor you and thank you for your continual support of this Ministry. #blackhistorymonth#honor#justbreathe#inspire#hope#dream#align#energy#movement#tunein#speaktheword#trust#prayinthespirit#rejoice https://www.instagram.com/p/CoQWvXMu_cT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

JTA — Rabbi Israel “Sy” Dresner, who demonstrated with Martin Luther King Jr. and was sometimes called the “most arrested rabbi in America,” died Thursday at age 92.
Dresner, who was a Freedom Rider in the 1960s, built a career as a social justice-oriented Reform rabbi who was active in the fight against the Vietnam War and was a vocal opponent of Israel’s military control of the West Bank. Dresner was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in December.
