I probably could have composed something quite witty and insightful about this wine last night if England hadn’t gone and scored three second half goals and interrupted my flow…! What I do recall is that this was a beautiful and precise #cabernet from @stonybrookvineyards (2017 vintage). Lovely purity of dark berry notes. I remember having a previous vintage of the Ghost Gum by Stony Brook on honeymoon in 2011 during an epic 5 days in Franschhoek. It was easily the most impactful wine of the trip but I’ve not managed to find it since. Thankfully I then discovered @hardtofindwines who helpfully stock it for a reasonable £15.99. The wine, despite being a different vintage, is just as I recall it. It’s a slightly unusual blend of Chardonnay and Semillon which come together to produce a rich and textural wine with subtle oak hints and a nice blend of butterscotch and lime notes. I’m fairly certain this is my first Mallorcan wine but it certainly won’t be the last. In fact, this won’t be my last bottle of this exact wine as I’m pretty sure I’ll be stocking up... made by @esfangar this red is a blend of Callet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Gorgollasa and Manto Negro. The wine is bursting with vibrant red fruit notes with a backing chorus of pepper and a slightly herbal kick. It’s not often you try something completely different wine wise, but this definitely qualifies. This Retafia by @pierrejourdanmcc is a still white wine combined with potstill brandy. It’s based on the wine style that was drunk to commemorate the signing of treaties and its sweetness makes it ideal for pate and foie gras. So, in the spirit of science we tried this with an absolute bucket load of different pates and it works tremendously.
