For Black History month, here’s a little sketch of one amazing woman, Harriet Tubman.

Harriet (2019)

Harriet is a testament to Cynthia Erivo’s acting prowess. As a whole, the picture is a mixed bag but the highs are high enough for me to endorse it.

In 1849, Maryland, Araminta “Minty” Ross (Erivo) is a slave owned by Gideon Brodess (Joe Alwyn). When Minty learns she is about to be sold and separated from her family, she runs. After a long journey northward, she takes the new name of Harriett Tubman and joins the abolitionist movement; helping other slaves escape to freedom as she did.

In real life, a childhood head injury caused Harriet to experience visions and dreams she believed came from God. This film turns these spells into a superpower. While running, Harriet takes a moment, kneels and prays. If there’s an ambush ahead, God will tell her. It’s based in fact but feels inauthentic. The first biblical passages we hear are from Reverend Samuel Green (Vondie Curtis-Hall). Ephesians 6:5 tell slaves to accept their subordinate position. It's a harsh dose of reality. How could anyone escape enslavement when even the Heavens condemn you? Paradoxically, hymns, gospel songs, and stories of Exodus bring hope to Harriet and her people. It speaks to the woman's real-life faith. The prophetic visions, presented as they are? not so much.

I appreciate writers Gregory Allen Howard and Kasi Lemmons (who also directs) acknowledging history without making a film solely about victims. 12 Years a Slave showed us the horrors. Harriet mentions torture, rape, beatings, and the dehumanization blacks faced but ultimately, it’s more interested in “Harriet the hero”. This, of course, means we need villains. Not just her obsessive former owner hellbent on catching her, but Harriet's gender-reversed evil twin too: Omar Dorsey as a black slave catcher. Their inclusion doesn't feel out of place but they way they're used screams "movie". It's never worse than in the final scene between Harriet and Gideon. You almost expect a post-credit stinger where he re-appears and swears he'll return in a sequel.

The criticisms are outweighed by the film's two biggest strengths. The first is the terrific score (the song Stand Up is particularly evocative). The second is Cynthia Erivo. Harriet goes through all kinds of growth and changes. She sheds her meek slave exterior and transforms into a legend. Even her family acknowledges it. Your eyes are always focussed on her. It's no surprise. In addition to being an important figure in U.S. history, she's a complex character and someone who overcame seemingly insurmountable odds.

Shockingly, this is the first time Harriet Tubmans' story is being told on the big screen. You're just glad to see Harriet... but your enthusiasm dips due to the formulaic, even cheesy passages. While the picture twists and squeezes its titular character into an almost superhero-like story, it also can’t escape real-life facts, which makes some of it just plain weird. Like her character, Cynthia Erivo comes to the rescue. She's too good to ignore and the film's crowd-pleasing nature wins out. (February 5, 2020)

It’s such a wonderful opportunity to see and revel in the details that go into solid costume design and construction for the screen. Like a miniature vest specifically made to be “bulging” at the buttons! Or a “worn” dress with several buttons replaced with ones that don’t match, and patches of similar but mismatched fabric. And a silk bias-cut skirt that hangs absolutely flawlessly. It’s glorious. HARRIET: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5: (Non-Spoilery bit) This 2019 movie chronicling the life and work of Harriet Tubman, was an excellent story. What a legend and a great Christian role model she was! Someone I knew too little about. The movie was powerful, realistic and inspiring without being as distressing and hopeless as “12 Years a Slave” was. Highly recommended. (Spoilery bit) I loved how her connection and reliance on God was so central to the film and such great lines like “I’m not going to give up on freeing Slaves because it’s too far”.
