I see the trailer 4 the upcoming Harriet Tubman Movie is out, but don't expect me 2 B overly enthused.
The lead Actress, Cynthia Erivo, would not have been my first choice for the Role. The 'New Voices of Black Media' have been talking about this for some time, but Mainstream Media is focused on a ADOS versus Nigerian narrative. For 'The Record', this isn't a Tribal tiff, but rather an issue of Class. It appears that we have an Afrikan Boule amongst Us... Cynthia Erivo, is a critically acclaimed Actress, period. That said, I don't think that she possesses the experience (or maturity) necessary to play Harriet Tubman appropriately.
Harriet Tubman, is Black America's Warrior Queen; the female counterpart to Nat Turner. Strong, Dominant, & Unapologetic. It is crucial that her image stays unadulterated. Erivo had no knowledge of Harriet Tubman before this Movie, & that is a serious problem. Similar to the questions that arose over Jordan Peele's casting Afrikan Actors to play lead roles in 'Get Out' & 'Us'- the question is: Why can't Afrikan American Actors tell their Own Story?
This is NOT a thing against Afrikan Actors. For example: '12 Years A Slave', was originally made 30 years earlier, starring Avery Brooks & Loretta Greene; directed by Gordon Parks. That said, Steve McQueen did an excellent job directing the Remake. Chiwetel Ejiofor & Lupita Nyong'o were above reproach. David Oyelowo was celebrated for his roles in 'The Butler' & 'Selma'. Idris Elba can play ANYONE w/o recourse. Cynthia Erivo however, is a 'Horse of a different Color'.
Erivo has Elitist tendencies (similar to Lupita). Unlike Lupita, Cynthia falls on the Luvvie Ajayi & Gina Yashere side of the fence. All three women have been criticized for making derogatory comments about Black American Culture; all while profiting from the Black American Experience. Cynthia Erivo won the Tony Award for her role in 'The Color Purple', but was criticized for her Social Media use of 'Black Speak' (i.e. Ebonics).
These Actors, & Black Immigrants sharing their view fail to see the impression of [blatant] disrespect towards Black America; they stand on Our shoulders, reaping the benefits of Our Struggle for Equity in America. Gina Yashere claimed that she was abused by Black American children in school, but she studied in Britain. Luvvie Ajayi acts like a bitter adult that couldn't play 'The Dozens' in her youth. We ALL had to endure the School Yard proving ground- if you act like a victim, you WILL be bullied.
Hollywood has floated a narrative of Afrikan-British Actors being Theatre trained, & overall, just better than their Afrikan- American counterparts. Funny thing is, Hollywood Studio Heads once prided themselves on being a Motion Picture Industry that trained their Actors (specifically) for that medium. Theatre was a different phenomenon. There are obvious exceptions of Actors that excelled in both, but Stage & Screen were different Methods.
The real fear behind the Casting choices being made is pretty simple. Black America is finally in a position to tell Our Story; We are concerned w/ having that Story altered or watered down. Jordan Peele, for example, gets to present the Black Experience from his perspective; but his own experience is extremely limited. Add in non- American Actors, & watch the narrative change. The Cast & Crew, are basically playing 'Make Believe'... How is this different from a non- Black person trying to tell Our Story; regardless of the intention? Like Daniel Kaluuya, Erivo has undeniable Talent, but lacks the Experience necessary to emote specific parts of Black American Life. The British Experience is just different.
From what I saw, the Harriet Tubman Trailer looks pretty good. Good film quality & cinematography. I just don't trust Cynthia Erivo to present Harriet Tubman properly, given her past acts & general opinion about Black America. I'm still waiting for her response to the question: Was her family involved in Slave Trading- Can you see the hypocrisy?! As ADOS, We need to know the lineage of these Immigrants. For me, supporting this Movie, is asking to be bamboozled. I already heard that young Harriet has 'sexual tension' w/ the Slave Master's Son- never heard this story before the Movie... Until Black America can vet who gets to play Our Heroes, Hollywood can expect more friction.

I really hope people don’t see #Harriet and think it’s historically accurate. #NotMyHarriet #AfroChat
Reposted from @ericalleshai #AfroChat 🗣 We really have to learn our own history. No more expecting biopics to be historically accurate. No more reading memes and tweets and believing them to be truth. No more allowing “influencers” to be your main source of information. Verify everything and everyone. Because if we continue to accept the narratives they tell us, we’ll remain ignorant while vilifying our own men and loving the ones who keep us disenfranchised. Please research for yourself. Truth is not fluid. There’s no such thing as her truth, my truth, or their truth. There is only the truth. Let’s be learners and advocates of our true history. 🖤

Not My Harriet: Who gets to represent black American history? | The Stream by Al Jazeera English Actress Cynthia Erivo is facing a backlash for her upcoming role as American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Many are upset that Erivo, who is Nigerian-British, was given the part instead of an African American actress and they’ve been voicing their opinions online using #NotMyHarriet, #HarrietDeservesBeter, and #ADOS. Criticism over Erivo’s casting began in 2017 when her casting was announced. She responded, and in an interview with Bustle, said she understood the argument: "I get that there is upset for me playing this role, and I understand where it comes from. It comes from so many African-American women feeling that they don’t get seen. There just isn’t enough when it comes to film and TV and entertainment. There isn’t enough — nowhere near enough — for us, as women of color, to see ourselves. And so I understand why this particular role, which is held to high esteem in this community, feels like it’s losing one of their own." The controversy, though, was reawakened in July by the release of the November-slated film’s trailer. On this episode of The Stream we discuss how experience and privilege relate to black identity.
