I MUST LEAVE THE DEVICE TO ITS OWN DEVICES
#helicopter parent for my damn printer#unrelated but i realize how much i say “printer” for 3d printers to the point people in my household don't think of a normal-ass printer#we had an old black and white 3d printer passed down by Somebody that i accidentally ripped the port off of and it got thrown out#in hindsight thats upsetting. would have been a fun project to solder a new one back on. Sad!!#anyway since that guy died boggprint reigns supreme#i guess i have this little label printer someone also handed down to me#but that thing has no identity. No soul. No eyes.

#talking#mostly talking for the first one here i havent touched the second one in years. altho i should get to replaying that one next#galaxy 1 is already gorgeous enough on its own like the 3d all stars remaster was pretty good#but i look at the aged wii graphics and how the characters were animated and im like man. imagine this even more stylized#and with the quality of a game like odyssey#and you know what even if they never port galaxy 2 or remake these at all MAKE A GALAXY 3!!!!!!#THEY BROUGHT BACK MARIO RPG N PAPER MARIO N M&L I KNOOOOOWWWWW THEYVE THOUGHT ABOUT GALAXY 3. DO IT FOR MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS? PLEASE?#my copy of galaxy 2 has the number 3 drawn on the box bc my brothers n i were dumb kids LMAO#literally my version of sonic adventure 3

I was going through some archived scans of 90's otaku magazines, as is my sacred duty, and I stumbled on this ad for a Sega Saturn game I did not know:
The pitch of Roommate (as seen here) is that of a "real time" romance simulation:
What makes it real-time is that the game progresses in sync with the Saturn's internal clock. In that way [main girl] Ryoko is just like a real girl; she has her own daily habits and lives her life accordingly. So if you start the game in the afternoon, you might not be able to meet her because she's at school [...] The purpose is to enjoy living together with Ryoko in real time and communicating with her.
And this is exactly the kind of way-too-convoluted gimmick that sacrifices gameplay functionality on the altar of conceptual novelty based on random technology add-ons present in new-gen consoles of the era that I just love. Obviously the concept of starting a game and having the main girl not be present so you cannot play is completely asinine - but think of the realism!
Between that and the discount-Sadamoto 90's character designs, I wanted to see it for myself; so I spent way, way too long setting up a Sega Saturn emulator. In my experience early CD-ROM-based consoles often require much more bespoke set-ups to get working, in this case custom BIOS files in the emulator firmware directories, and JPN-language ones at that for this game. But I got it to work and oh yeah, this is some early "digital" console era crust:
Playing this game is just painful. The clock of course means that you essentially can't play it at all - looking at YouTube comments on the very few Let's Plays and such that exist, people are reminiscing about how they could never find Ryoko because their schedules didn't align. One person even comments:
This game is for NEETs and shut-ins
Which is a valid demo I guess! But it doesn't really stop there - your house is a "fully realized" 3D environment of bare walls which you navigate with clunky controls. Let me log in and take some screenshots...
Jesus Christ it's 10 pm and you are cooking dinner?! The one time I don't want this ghost popping out of the cracks in the floorboards, I swear...
Okay, got rid of her (She broke a plate -_- you moved in yesterday, girl):
You walk, in real time (step by step) through this pixel museum just...hoping that one of the rooms will contain Ryoko and proc a dialogue event based on the time of day. There is a little more to it than that but that is essentially the gameplay. This would, very obviously, be simply better as a straightforward visual novel.
But you see how that just isn't as cool in 1997, right? This is the era where the fidelity of graphics and the technology for simulation is progressing at a rapid clip, and everyone wants to see the boundaries pushed. Roommate isn't the first "real time simulation" game, but it is the most pure, the one fully committed to the bit. Your house is completely mapped out, the girl has her routine, you walk step by painful step through the rooms because this is "real", you are living it. They even use a live photo for the outside of the house to sell the aesthetic (and also save money):
Ryoko is waiting in the kitchen of that house when you come home from work, putting on an apron, ready to cook dinner. For you.
Assuming you get home at whatever fucking 30 minute window the game decided to gatekeep its gameplay behind! But of course I exaggerate - it wasn't that bad (there are little mechanics you can use to set some schedule times in the game for example), player tolerance for bullshit was way higher then, and you were expected to buy strategy guides for these things. So even though it was panned by critics on release...it was a sleeper hit with a devoted fanbase.
Which means it got a ton of sequels and ports! We don't have to go through them all, though I will share my favorite factoid about the first sequel - "ROOMMATE ~Ryoko in Summer Vacation~" from the wiki:
The character designs are significantly different from the previous game (especially Ryoko's brown hair and large breasts).
Priorities, baby. But some of the ports are interesting because of the changing tech. A version was ported to the PlayStation, which does not have the internal clock a Sega Saturn had. But coincidentally it did have the PocketStation, a handheld GameBoy/Tamagotchi hybrid expansion tool that did have an internal clock and could sync with the game. It also let you track Ryoko's schedule and play mini-games, with some very adorable animations as you can see in this ad for the product that featured Roommate:
This device absolutely reminds me of the Disc Fax system discussed in my Miho Nakayama essay - a very niche product biting off more than it can chew making games overly complex to play but allowing things that would otherwise be impossible (and this one was a good deal more successful at least). Here it allowed Roommate's central gimmick to function - and is super cute, honestly I would buy a standalone tamagotchi version of this game.
The PS1 also couldn't quite handle how the game was built for the Sega Saturn graphics-wise, and as such a bunch of the 3D elements were sanded off into 2D simulacrums - most notably the house:
Which, despite this being a technological downgrade, is way better! It looks adorable, you can actually see what is going on and where Ryoko is, and you can navigate it way more cleanly. God, did...hold on let me tab back to the game...yeah, is there no clock in the original game on screen. That is insane. Anyway the PS1 version had a lot of these cute little graphical additions, even right on the title screen:
It is definitely the better looking version, which is a classic tale - in 1997 the "bleeding edge" of 3D graphics were impressive to players, even through their roughness. Now they just aren't, and so the retro charm of designs that are optimized what the mediums of the time could reliably handle have a lot more appeal.
There was also a PC port in 1998, which did exactly what I suggested and added an "adventure" mode where you could ignore the clock system. They definitely learned over time what worked and what didn't; but the appeal of the gimmick is what first sold it to players in the end.
All of this is to say, don't play Roommate, and if you do just emulate the PS1 game instead of torturing yourself with the Sega Saturn version. Oh...you weren't gonna play a Japanese-only abandonware 90's not-even-eroge dating sim to begin with? Ah, well, yeah, I guess that makes sense.
Man I should translate it shouldn't I? So people can play it...
#Roommate (1997)#ash plays visual novels#Ash otaku archives#mini-essay#Ryoko's design in that first ad is so cute and like everything here is downstream of that flash of affection

hi! welcome to my sideblog where i will Making your fav in Mii Maker™.
who are you?
i am simply a lover of miis. i go by a handful of different names but you can just call me pants! (she/her 🏳️⚧️)
why are you? (doing this)
mii making has been a lifelong passion of mine and after getting interested in @making-you-in-spore's posts and the "making you" ecosystem broadly it felt only fitting to throw my hat in the ring. as nintendo's support of miis has dwindled over time, the niche of mii making blogs has also dwindled, and somebody has to pick up the slack! maybe things will change with the new tomodachi life game and the switch 2 over the horizon, who knows! regardless, i will always shoot for the miis. my allegiance is unwavering.
what are you? (making)
let me make one thing very clear: i will not be using the "makeup" mechanic of the miitopia switch port. no shade to anyone who uses it, ive had a lot of fun with it too! i just have more fun with the limitations of the wii u/3ds mii maker. ever since the miitopia switch port came out it feels like miis made with the makeup have gotten a lot more attention, and somebody has to rep the classic miis! also, while i do have the full capability to port screenshots from my various mii making devices to my phone/computer, idk if ill feel like it. its up to chance if ill have the nerve. itll probably just be pictures of my 3ds screen taken on my phone the vast majority of the time
how are you?
im doing pretty good thanks for asking
are you taking requests?
yes! ive been mii making for so long that it comes pretty naturally to me (mii hehe) so i think i should be able to make them pretty fast. also for the most part ive already made miis of my favorite characters, so theres a good chance if you ask ill already have made something youre looking for! go obscure! go wild! i might even import it into some mii related game if i feel like it! no promises though! thats hard work!
generally i make whatever asks interest me the most first but i promise i will get to your request eventually! it just so happens that eventually can be a long time i am only one woman and i have many mouths to feed like a mother bird feeding baby birds miis from her mouth. be patient and you will have your wishes fufilled
is there a list of all the miis youve made?
yes! on second thought im putting big red text here to make this stand out more
what is your banner/pfps?
my pfp is a picture of my mii taken from pikmin bloom, i just found it in my camera roll on a whim when i went looking. my banner is a picture of my son Nubby from Nubby's Number Factory i didnt have any part in the games development i just feel strong maternal instincts towards him. image taken from tomodachi life, ill update this later with his outfit and room names

thats all for now!
ill probably get around to putting some of my proudest miis here eventually as a kind of portfolio but for now... the foundation has been laid... mii making is all that remains.

my Personal Take is that I don't think a trilogy port is completely out of the question here. the only thing holding it back is that it doesn't really have any platforms to update it on. but consider:
it has been five years since the last trilogy port. capcom loves trilogy ports. consider: gba release of t&t in 2004. nintendo ds t&t in 2007. wii t&t in 2010. ios trilogy in 2012. 3ds trilogy in 2014. switch/ps4/xbox/steam ports in 2019. People have spoken before about how this is the longest gap between ace attorney games in history. It is also the biggest gap between trilogy ports in aa's history, as well. It's time.
In comparison to all of the other ports, the trilogy port is MUCH lower quality. No bonus content, no autoplay, not even the basic option to skip to certain parts of the case so, no matter if you've been playing justice for all since 2002, you HAVE to play through the ENTIRETY of turnabout big top before you can get to farewell, my turnabout. I do think this is unfair.
it would be so funny

ok so i finally watched the direct
The nintendo chat feature looks so fun!!! I live hours away from my gamer sister, so this feature would be so fun for us lol
The botw/totk switch 2 editions don't really have enough for me to get them /again/ but it's nice that there's the option i guess?
Mario kart world looks fun AF ngl, the free driving feature is *chef's kiss* like sometimes i just wanna drive around and not necessarily race so bless for this
I'd be interested to get hades 2 for switch 2 only if it has a physical version, i own the physical version of hades 1 so I'm all for getting hades 2 physical as well
BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY REMASTER IS LITERALLY THE BEST ANNOUNCEMENT EVER AND I'M STILL SHAKING OVER IT AND ESPECIALLY SINCE IT'S AVAILABLE AT LAUNCH?!?!?
Like u don't get it, that's MY FAVORITE 3DS game EVER!!!! if they remaster it's direct sequel, bravely second, my life will be complete tbh crossing my fingers it does well
As I've said before, I'm not a fan of the warriors gameplay so i don't personally care for the new hyrule warriors 🙈🙈🙈 but it is cool that they're showing more about the zonai lore!
GAMECUBE PORTS FOR SWITCH HELL YEAH WIND WAKER HELL YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!! LET'S GO LET'S GO LET'S GO !!!!!!!!
NEW KIRBY AIR RIDE GAME WAHOOOOOO LEGIT SO EXCITED OVER IT!!!!!! the OG one on gamecube was so iconic already I'm so happy they FINALLY made a new one
Anyway, i clearly will have to save up to get a nintendo switch 2 lmao what with that price, i'll enjoy metroid prime 4 in the switch 1 for now 😬😬😬

Cool Robot Fact! Did you know that if a robot has an HDMI port, you can hook it up to a monitor and see their thoughts?
You can see all kinds of awesome things like:
- Rotating Cube (VERY processor heavy)
- 3D Teapot with a countable amount of polygons
- The cessation of all things!
- Waveforms (Try pushing some buttons or turning some dials, you might be able to make it move)
- Hi-res images of wildlife
- The bouncing DVD logo (No, it WON'T touch the corners... Or will it?)
Ask your local robot if you can have a look!
#robotkin#machinekin#aikin#robot#If you hook me up you'll be able to play the entirety of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere for the Playstation

Hello Bobby,
I had a shower thought about how you can really just put ANYTHING on the Nintendo 3DS. This would not happen any time soon as I do not yet possess the skills, BUT would I have your blessing in creating an unofficial SLARPG 3DS port? Something about the concept of Allison Goleta On The 3DS cracks me up to no end.
I WON'T do this if it's a problem for you. I understand that it could potentially impact sales(?) if you could just download this game on the 3DS.
Thanks a million <3
I have to imagine this would be incredibly difficult to accomplish, though you're more than welcome to try! I know the game has already been played on 3DS (and Vita) by streaming it from a PC, but an actual port would be a whole 'nother story.

cuz at first ajaa wasnt even meant to exist it was just meant to be the trilogy and thats it, then while theyre porting it over to the nintendo ds capcom gives them the green light to go nuts with a bonus pseudo-dlc case and By God Do They, making the longest case yet of RFTA with fully animated 3d cutscenes + an incredibly convoluted plot that makes the most out of aa1's 3 day trial system + fully modelled 3d rotational evidence, hitting heavy themes of police corruption and evidence forgery and whatnot like they went INSANE, cuz this was supposed to be IT. this was supposed to be ace attorneys big finale and farewell but SIKE oh my god the actual Ministry Of Justice has knocked on capcoms door and told them hey can you make some propaganda for us. so now the aa team has to make propaganda for them. right after burning themselves the fuck out from creating rfta. all that time spent on rfta which couldve been development time for ajaa.... too late. cant be taken back. apollo justice is designed in less than a week and theyre marketing this game while the team is still making it, takumi crazed madman that he is decides to not rely on old characters which while that is an artistic slay, sets up the stage for a marketing failure, and a new artistic team of infinite ambition goes nuts with creating derangedly detailed animations
⬆️ like oh my god are you insane. thank you so much BUT ARE YOU INSANE? all while still making 3d renders of evidence and random 3d animations and it looks so awesome BUT THERES NOT ENOUGH TIME, 3 wonderful cases are made but 4-4 falls on its face. 6 hours long instead of the usual 10 and only one cross-examination in the final trial and 2 whole main characters with no backstory like its bad. its going to be bad. but its too late. the most incomplete ace attorney game has to be rushed out of the gates and the sales are made But The Reception Is Bad. Real Bad. 2000s hater gamer crowds were the first of its kind, being massively fuelled by the internet, haters back then could sink their teeth deep into a company, which is what got nintendo scrambling away from their wind waker art direction to appease the gamers w twilight princess. so similarly when the hate for ajaa came on, cuz whattt phoenix disbarred and no 😤 old characters 😤😤, capcom scrambled to appease the masses. but oh oh whats this? takumi says 'yeahhhh Nah' and says he wants to make a game about his dog. OK. cant persuade him away from that. might as well let some new blood handle the franchise in takumi's place then, but for The Love Of God do not make an ajaa followup. the gamers will kill us. and so the aai duology was born....... cool........ first one's reception was so bad that localization plans were dropped entirely for the sequel. wow. takumi is fresh off from ghost trick but fucking what, 5 years has passed now, and the new hot console is the nintendo THREE ds. 3ds. wowwww. fucking... PROFESSOR LAYTON kidnaps takumi to make plvpwaa and ajaa continues to be left in the dust. fucking nobody wants him. poor orphaned kitten left in the street. all while the trilogy gets 9584948 million adaptations. and yamazaki twiddles his thumbs thinking abt making aai3 but after thinking it over hes like yeah ill try making aa5. capcom lets him and.......... its over........ they tell him sure go for it But Do Not Follow Up On Apollo Everyone Hates Him please make phoenix the protag. a recipe for disaster. and a disaster aa5 is. juggling THREE protags a complete mess and they do a popularity poll and wow would u look at who came first, fucking APOLLO. JUSTICEEEEEEE. its almost like.... gamers opinions..... are not valuable in the long run.. and popular opinion has never signified artistic understanding.... aa6 comes chugging along and yamazaki addicted to racism cranks out something even worse. both aa56 makes the sales it needs but mindless fanservice can only get u so far... its been nearly 10 years since the ajaa 'trilogy' titles released and the general consensus is that Aaja Was Good and aa56 Not So Much but what can you do now? heres the apollo justice trilogy please buy it and deeply lower ur expectations for coherent and cohesive narratives which have basis in reality thank u. bc u will not be finding that here. ajaa never stood a chance.. they werent doomed by the narrative. its worse. they were doomed by STUPID FUCKING GAMERS AND STUPID EXECUTIVE DECISIONS 😭😭😭
