Chelsea v Southampton Wednesday 2 January, 19:45Injury-hit Chelsea looking to extend winning run Chelsea won their first five Premier League games under new manager, Maurizio Sarri, and they were unbeaten in their first 12 under the Italian before a 3-1 defeat to Spurs at the end of November upset the applecart. Losses away to Wolves and at home to Leicester have followed in December but a 2-1 victory at Watford on Boxing Day and a thoroughly professional 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday have put the Blues back on track for a top four finish at least. Chelsea’s style of play under Sarri is attractive on the eye and if they can add another prolific striker the future looks bright. Eden Hazard has ten goals already this season and Pedro’s chipped in with half-a-dozen but Álvaro Morata is starting to look like a bit of a flop. The former Real Madrid star hasn’t scored since he bagged a brace against Palace on November 4 but he might get another chance to prove himself now having replaced the injured Olivier Giroud on Sunday. Morata hadn’t played at all since the Wolves defeat on December 5 and he’s only scored five goals in total so far this season but he looks highly likely to get a chance on Wednesday against the Saints. Pedro is side-lined with a hamstring injury, Giroud looks extremely unlikely to recover, after what looked like a nasty knock on Sunday, and Willian was icing his left leg after being subbed late on at Selhurst Park. The injuries are piling up and Morata may just get one last chance to prove himself.Weary Saints ready for a rest After a bright start under new manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, which saw the Saints beat Arsenal 3-2 at home and Huddersfield 3-1 away, Southampton have suffered back-to-back home defeats to West Ham and Manchester City, 2-1 and 3-1 respectively. Following the weary defeat to the Hammers, Hasenhüttl made six changes before the City game on Sunday but to little effect. Having gone behind to a well-worked David Silva strike, a brief spell of pressure after half-an-hour saw the Saints draw level after City’s makeshift left-back, Oleksandr Zinchenko, gifted possession to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but parity was soon lost. A pair of goals on the stroke of halftime put daylight between the two sides and Southampton were never in it after that. Unlikely victories for Burnley and Cardiff over the festive period, as well as a home win against bottom club, Huddersfield, for fellow strugglers, Fulham, have resulted in Southampton being dragged right back down in to the mire. The Saints are out of the relegation zone but only just in 17th place, above Burnley on goal difference. They’re still as big as [5.6] to be relegated but there’s little doubt they’re in trouble.Hard work, harrying and hustling are all Hasenhüttl hashtags so picking up the job at the busiest part of the season, with the squad already stretched and fatigued is far from ideal for the Austrian. It’s very hard to envisage the Saints being refreshed enough in time to get anything form their visit to Stamford Bridge and they’ll be a better side when the breaks between games are more generous.Chelsea too short at long odds-on Chelsea have won their last six Premier League encounters with the Saints, and they also beat them 2-0 in the F.A Cup last season, so they’re looking to make it eight victories on the trot but whether they’re value at less than [1.3] is debatable.The Blues haven’t won three Premier League matches in-a-row since September and Southampton haven’t lost three straight matches since October so for the Blues to land the long odds-on, something has to give, and with injuries mounting up for the home side, I’m in no rush to pile in at such prohibitive odds. It may not be as straightforward an affair as the betting suggests and the value looks like being in the side markets.Both teams to Score value at odds against Looking at their stats, it’s hard to see Southampton keeping a clean-sheet. They’ve conceded in each of their last ten Premier League games and we have to go all the way back to Boxing Day 2002 for the last time that they successfully shut out Chelsea – in a 0-0 draw at the Bridge. The two sides have met 19 times since then and the Blues have bagged every time. And they’ve scored at least twice in six of their last seven meetings. Over 2 ½ in the Over/Under 2 ½ Goals market is trading at only a fraction above [1.5] but that looks short when looking at Chelsea’s recent home form. Somewhat surprisingly, their last four home games have produced less than three goals, suggesting the industry-wide best of 8/5 with the Sportsbook might be the wiser option. Southampton are clearly shipping goals but they’re also scoring them and both teams have scored in nine of the last ten Premier League matches involving the Saints.Chelsea can edge it late on At first glance this looks like a simple enough assignment for Chelsea. They’ve won their last two and they have a fantastic record against Southampton but injuries coupled with their recent home form just temper my enthusiasm. It’s also possible that Hasenhüttl will bring a few refreshed players back in to the fold and they’ll be a harder nut to crack than they were at home to City on Sunday. Rather than back Chelsea to win in the outright market at long odds-on, I prefer to play them in the Half Time/Full Time market, where Draw/Chelsea is a juicy [4.6]. On five of the 13 occasions the Blues have won in the Premier League this season, they’ve been level at the break. They were drawing at half time in both their last two victories and they were tied after 45 minutes with Arsenal, Newcastle and Bournemouth at the beginning of the season before going on to win. The Journey: Early Returns from the 2018 Draft

The events that unfold in the 12 months leading up to any given NHL entry draft are typically paramount when writing the individual stories of the players who are selected (or not selected) on that day. Although the NHL as a whole has become far more effective at detecting late bloomers, in many cases, a player's apparent value on draft day has an enormous impact on the opportunity that they receive when it comes to their professional career.

The best modern example of this is Nail Yakupov – a player with an attractive draft status who received six years’ worth of NHL opportunities, based almost entirely on his apparent draft value. On the other hand, there are hundreds of players who enter the league without what some refer to as draft pedigree and are forced to overcome the barrier that is their lack of pedigree, before being given an equal opportunity.

With that being said, from each draft, there are a handful of players that are up to the task: Connor Brown, Ondrej Kase, Oskar Lindblom, and many more. They aren’t isolated to a single background and don’t follow any trend, but in most cases, their rise to the challenge begins shortly after the day they’re selected on day two of the draft.

Today, we’re going to have a look at which players from day two of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft are making an early case for the next late round breakouts. Most of these names will be unfamiliar, and of the group of them, only a handful is likely to get an honest crack at making an NHL career for themselves, but in any case, they should be finding their way on to your fantasy radar.

Second Round

44th | Albin Eriksson | Dallas Stars

Skelleftea AIK (SHL)

At the time of his selection by the Dallas Stars, Eriksson had dressed in a total of 17 games in Sweden’s top league, the SHL. His international record wasn’t overly impressive, especially in his recent history. Jim Nill was obviously able to look past those short-comings and see this player for what he truly is. Eriksson is a power forward with a lot of skill, and an excellent shot.

Twenty games into his sophomore season with Skellefteå AIK, Eriksson is maintaining a 0.5 point per game pace – a comparable rate to Andreas Johnsson’s D+1 campaign in Froulunda.

58th | Filip Hallander | Pittsburgh Penguins

2017-18 Timra IK (HockeyAllsvenskan) → 2018-19 Timra IK (SHL)

A consensus late second-round pick to be, Hallander competed primarily in Sweden’s Allsvenskan league in the year prior to his draft. He has a very well-rounded style of play that is highlighted by his puck handling skill and playmaking ability.

His 0.5 point per game pace in the countries second-tier league has translated to nearly an identical rate in the SHL where he’s off to a hot start with Timra IK. The Swede should be a lock for his countries World Junior squad where we’ll get a better sense of his development in peer-peer action.

Third Round

92nd | Connor Dewar | Minnesota Wild

Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Rookie Minnesota GM, Paul Fenton, whose 25-year background in scouting led him to his current position with the Wild took the helm for the 2018 Entry Draft. Fenton made four selections prior to Dewar, who was taken at 92nd overall. The 5-10 Everett center had been projected to go almost two full rounds later by most scouting agencies, but so far, Fenton’s gamble looks to be paying off. Almost a third of the way into the WHL season, Dewar is on pace for over 110 points with the ‘Tips, a feat that seems unimaginable given his previous draft status.

A sustained offence at his current pace will have him drawing comparisons to Blue Jacket’s prospect Vitali Abramov (65th overall, 2016), or even Tampa Bay center, Brayden Point (79th overall, 2014).

Fourth Round

94th | Matej Pekar | Buffalo Sabres

2017-18 Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) → 2018-19 Barrie Colts (OHL)

The Sabres haven’t been messing around since drafting Pekar in the 4th round of the 2018 Entry Draft. Only a couple of weeks into his D+1 campaign with the Barrie Colts, the Sabres signed off on the forward’s three-year entry-level contract. The Czech had previously committed to the NCAA D1 program at Miami, which wouldn’t have permitted the pro-contract.

Pekar’s adaptation to the OHL isn’t overly surprising, considering the success that he enjoyed last year in the USHL with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. He’s an extremely high energy player with skill and tenacity incorporated into every part of his game, going as far as to admit that he tries to emulate Brad Marchand’s style of play. While it’s still likely that the provocateur takes a longer development path than some, he’s showing signs of adaptability and a sustained offensive trajectory.

Fifth Round

135th | Brandon Kruse | Vegas Golden Knights

Bowling Green State University (WCHA)

One of the sneakiest picks of the 2018 Entry Draft, the under-sized and over-aged Kruse could have likely made it through to the seventh round – but the Knights knew they wanted him. Kruse was recruited by Bowling Green State rather unconventionally, coming up through a second tier US junior league, the NAHL. Nonetheless, he’s becoming one of the NCAA’s most prolific young playmakers.

While the modern NHL has experienced an infusion of speedy undersized forwards, a barrier remains for those players to overcome before they are able to make an impact. The WCHA doesn’t have as great of a track record for producing NHL level talent as most of the other NCAA conferences, and almost none in terms of smaller players. On his current offensive trajectory, however, the fifth-round pick will be in line for an NHL contract by the time he graduates.

Sixth Round

167th | Mathias Emilio Pettersen | Calgary Flames

2017-18 Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) → 2018-19 University of Denver Pioneers

Brad Treliving didn’t own a single draft pick inside the first three rounds of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, but what he did in the fourth round on was satisfactory, to say the least. His last two selections, in-fact, are thus far turning out to be excellent value. At 167th overall, Pettersen is a highly skilled forward, with a sharp mind for the game. Although he isn’t particularly explosive, his positional game has proven to be a key component in the transition from the USHL to the NCAA.

A dozen games into his collegiate career, the Norwegian hasn’t missed a stride, contributing on 14 tallies for the Denver Pioneers – good for fifth among drafted players under 20, and beating out highly ranked prospects such as Ryan Poehling and Joel Farabee. With a few years of contract-free development ahead, the Flames should be happy to sit back and enjoy the view while Pettersen continues to impress.

169th | Mathias Laferriere | St. Louis Blues

Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)

Laferriére, not to be confused with Lafreniére hadn’t recently been projected to be a top selection at the 2018 Entry Draft. After being drafted seventh overall by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the 2016 QMJHL Entry Draft, Laferriére became part of the trade that sent Pierre Luc Dubois to the eventual playoff finalists. In his first year of draft eligibility, the 6-2 right-winger managed a respectable 41 points, however, struggled on the defensive side of the puck. His lack of production in playoffs also contributed to the Screaming Eagles first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The 18-year-old’s lack of high-level skill may have turned teams away until this point in the draft, but his frame and vision are perfect for a mid-round project, and early into the QMJHL season, he’s making a case that he could be even more than that. With 12 goals and 21 assists, he’s already matched his goal total from a year ago (in less than half the games) and is on pace for a team-leading 80-90 point campaign.

Seventh Round

198th | Dmitri Zavgorodny | Calgary Flames

Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)

In his first year of eligibility, Zavgorodny nearly slipped through the cracks of the 2018 Entry Draft. While he had been projected to somewhere in the range of the third to fifth rounds, the Russian who had already been playing in the QMJHL dropped all the way to, wouldn’t you know it, the Flames in the late seventh round. The 5-9 forward didn’t waste time stewing on the disappointment of his late selection though. After a brief return to Russia, he made a point of spending almost his entire summer training in Calgary with established NHL players from the Flames organization.

His combination of speed and skill make the Rimouski Oceanic forward an intriguing prospect for the Flames organization, especially given the low cost of acquiring his rights. Now twenty-six games into the QMJHL campaign, he’s on pace to eclipse his draft year point total by more than 30; all the while playing second line minutes behind 2020 eligible prospect Alexis Lafreniere. As far as seventh-round picks go, this is a guy to have on your fantasy radar.

CMN 2560 est un cours de communication offert à l'Université d'Ottawa. Intitulé théorie des médias, le cours est donné chaque lundi soir de 19:00 à 22:00. Donné par Pierre Levy, philosophe, sociologue et chercheur en sciences de l'information et de la communication, il semblerait que le cours soit l'un des préférés des étudiants, et heureusement car un cours le lundi soir avec une température en dessous de 0, il faudrait avoir la volonté d'y aller. Théorie des médias peut être mais un apprentissage où la pratique est privilégiée. Ce qui semble être un succés car cette apprentissage se fait directement avec les outils de communications du temps, à savoir sur Twitter avec le hashtag #UOTM18 et notre "trop populaire" facebook (groupe fermé aux étudiants uniquement). Un cours plutôt innovant car la majorité des étudiants avant ce cours n'avait qu'une brève notion de la twitosphère. Paris Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week has finished, now all eyes are on Paris to bring you the latest: Paris Fashion Week! Which is happening as you read this post, the streets of Paris are filled with the #welcomefashionweek hashtag. PFW started the 25th of September and will run until the 3rd of October. In this post we will make a brief summary of some Paris shows…

Dior's show took place last Tuesday 26th of October. Maria Grazia Chiuri, the designer, who has stated many times that we should be all feminists, questioned: “Why have there been no great women artists?” after reading Linda Nochlin’s essay (1971). Each attendee of the show had a copy of it. This considered the collection was inspired by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

The same day, Saint Lauren’s show took place under the Eiffel Tower! Following Dior, on each chair there was a card with one of Pierre Berge’s most well-known quote: “Maybe this is crazy love, the love of two madmen.”

Here’s some news for the alt-right activists in the United States behind a disinformation campaign aimed at getting Marine Le Pen elected president of France by spreading rumors about her opponent, Emmanuel Macron: The French do not much like having their intelligence insulted by Americans.

That theme was repeated again and again in France on Saturday, in response to reports that a trove of hacked documents — nine gigabytes of memos and emails stolen from Macron aides and posted online Friday night, just before a legally imposed blackout on statements from candidates took effect — was first publicized on social networks by pro-Trump propagandists.

According to Nicolas Vanderbiest, a Belgian academic who studies social networks, the hacked documents only began to attract attention after they were linked to on Twitter by Jack Posobiec, a Trump supporter who added the misleading hashtag, #MacronLeaks.

That tag, which falsely suggested that the hacked documents had been leaked by a public-spirited whistleblower, rather than stolen by Macron’s political opponents, and contained evidence of wrongdoing, instead of what appears to be mainly a collection of mundane campaign memos, was soon used by a more influential account, WikiLeaks.

As Vanderbiest demonstrated in graphics that chart how awareness of the hacked documents spread across Twitter, a series of tweets from WikiLeaks drew much more attention to the trove — and helped validate it in the minds of many followers of the transparency organization, some of whom wrongly assumed that Wikileaks was the original source for publishing the documents.

Even as Wikileaks helped spread news of the hack, the group’s French lawyer, Juan Branco, wrote that the “MacronLeaks” dump “disgusts me.”

“What are we playing at?” asked Branco, who is running for a seat in parliament next month as a candidate of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Insoumise party.

Instead of important revelations, an initial review of the documents circulating under the MacronLeaks tag by Julien Cadot, a journalist for the site Numerama, suggested that they “seem to be utterly banal.”

“There are briefing notes, bills, loans for amounts that are not excessive,” Cadot explained, along with “strictly personal and private exchanges — personal notes on rain and good weather, a confirmation email on the publication of a novel, the reservation of a table between friends.”

The point of the dump, then, appears to be less about providing real evidence to back up the rumors and innuendo Marine Le Pen’s supporters have been spreading about Macron for months, and more a way to reinforce the fact-free speculation the candidate herself engaged in during a televised debate this week — that her rival, a former investment banker, might be hiding something that would discredit him, like an offshore account.

That was certainly the message Le Pen’s influential deputy, Florian Philippot, attempted to drive home on Twitter, where he asked rhetorically, “Will #Macronleaks teach us something that investigative journalism has deliberately killed?”

That seemed unlikely, however, given the timing of the release — which came just before French media outlets were forced to observe a ban on reporting for the campaign’s final weekend, meaning that any revelations of real significance would not be broadcast outside the echo chambers of social networks and non-French outlets.

According to initial reviews of the documents, the hacked documents also seem to have been stolen nearly two weeks ago. The decision to not release them until it was too late for journalists to dig through them for dirt on Macron strongly suggests that the hackers, at least, had not come across anything incriminating.

Not that the lack of evidence stopped alt-right activists like Posobiec — who previously played a central role in pushing the viral conspiracy theory that Hilary Clinton’s aides were using the code word “pizza” in emails to refer to child sex slaves — from trying to claim that the hacked documents were damaging to Macron.

As Alberto Nardelli of Buzzfeed noted, Posobiec even falsely claimed that a mundane document showing that Macron’s campaign had taken out financial insurance was a suspiciously “huge new life insurance policy” taken out by the candidate.

While Macron’s campaign confirmed that some of the documents were genuine, they claimed that the trove also contained forgeries. Among the hacked documents examined by security researchers, some did appear to be obvious fakes — like one receipt for illegal drugs, supposedly ordered by an elderly French politician who used Bitcoin to make his purchase and asked for the drugs to shipped to him under his own name at his parliamentary office.

Other researchers reported that the metadata of some documents revealed that they had been edited on computers using Russian-language characters.

That fueled widespread speculation that the hacked documents might have been stolen and released by Russian intelligence agents, to promote Le Pen, who had a friendly meeting with President Vladimir Putin in March, and has borrowed 9.4 million euros from a Russian bank to fund her campaign.

“What I get from this clumsy initiative is that it reveals just how much these people think of us as imbeciles,” the blogger Jean-Marc Lafon wrote on Twitter. “You can’t love France and be convinced that the French people are fools,” he added. “You can be a patriot and have a brain.”

As Nicolas Vanderbiest, the Belgian researcher, noted, earlier this week Posobiec and a network of followers and bots were also responsible for spreading an obviously forged document that they insisted was evidence that Macron had evaded French taxes by opening a secret bank account in the Bahamas. In that case, Posobiec had used the English-language hashtag #MacronGate, which, as Samuel Laurent of Le Monde noted, betrayed the fact that it did not originate in the French-speaking world.

Even though that fake “proof” of a secret Macron account was debunked in the French media, it continued to spread on social networks, successfully confusing some voters, who were also exposed to other forgeries shared by activists from Le Pen’s National Front.

Taken together, the effort to spread forged documents and the late release of genuine material hacked from Macron’s campaign, disguised as a “leak,” might be evidence of an intentional disinformation campaign, aimed at misleading voters into thinking real evidence of malfeasance by Macron had been provided to the media but was being suppressed.

Activist held over Facebook post released

BEIRUT: Lebanese activist Ahmad Amhaz was released on bail Thursday following nine days in jail for a controversial Facebook post in February that slammed Lebanese political leaders. The decision to release the activist was made by Baabda Investigative Judge Pierre Francis after Amhaz’s family and lawyer posted the LL500,000 ($300) bail payment.

Amhaz had been held in jail since March 21, after police received a tip about his social media post.

He was later transferred to the Internal Security Forces’ Cybercrimes Bureau for questioning, then referred to the judiciary to stand trial.

In a tweet Tuesday, Prime Minister Saad Hariri said that he and President Michel Aoun – both of whom were alluded to in the Facebook post – had “decided to let go of our personal rights regarding the case,” and had informed the relevant prosecutor.

However, Amhaz still faces a trial and could be sentenced to two years imprisonment for the post, in which he appeared to criticize Aoun, Hariri and Speaker Nabih Berri. “There are three animals currently ruling our country,” his post said. “A crocodile ... a donkey ... and one that hasn’t been revealed yet.”

The post ended with a hashtag: #RepublicOfTheJungle.

Human rights organizations expressed mixed feelings over the recent developments.

“It’s a positive sign that the judge finally released him,” Bassam Khawaja, a researcher for Human Rights Watch Lebanon, told The Daily Star. “But he never should have been held in the first place.”

Lama Fakih, deputy director of Human Rights Watch’s Middle East and North Africa division, agreed.

Lebanon’s extensive libel and defamation laws could have a chilling effect on freedom of speech, she said. “As long as these laws are on the books, there is the potential that they will be used to pick up people who are simply expressing themselves on social media,” Fakih told The Daily Star.

Under Article 852 of Lebanon’s penal code, those charged with defaming certain state institutions – including the Army, the Office of the President and national emblems – can face long jail sentences and fines ranging from LL400,000 ($265) to LL500,000 ($330).

The code’s sweeping language worries many in the human rights community. “The main problem is that Law 852 allows the prosecutor to automatically go after anybody who criticizes these topics,” Wadih al-Asmar, head of the Lebanese Center for Human Rights, told The Daily Star. “A lot of people express their opinions in impolite ways. The prosecutors cannot prosecute everybody who does it,” he said.

“When they do [prosecute], it appears unfair.”

Asmar said this area of Lebanese law is in dire need of an update. “We believe that these laws are from another era, and do not have a place in a democratic country,” he said.

“They should be reformed based on our international commitments.”

Ramblings: What to do With Murray and Crawford Out? (Jan 18)

The latest attempt by the Canadiens to fill their void at the center position saw Jacob de la Rose between Alex Galchenyuk and Jonathan Drouin. It was only one game, against a quality opponent, but it’s no surprise that this didn’t work. De la Rose was once a promising prospect, but in over 80 games of NHL action he has proven himself to be a replacement level option. He has scored less than 1.0 points per 60 minutes of action at 5-on-5 in over 900 minutes of play. It’s fair to assume he’s not an NHL calibre player after that.

This is what they have been forced to experiment with since they refuse to use Galchenyuk there and Drouin has been a flop. But they don’t deserve any excuses. The Ducks managed to tread water with Chris Wagner and Antoine Vermette as their top two centermen for much of the season.

It’s hard to envision a team boasting the depth at center to help Montreal out in a trade, but the Canadiens have scoring potential on the wing to shed. Max Pacioretty, while struggling, is a perennial 30-goal threat. Galchenyuk has hit that mark as well. Drouin, Brendan Gallagher, Andrew Shaw and Paul Byron have all scored 20+ goals in a season. Artturi Lehkonen scored 18 as a 21-year-old rookie and has perhaps the most lethal shot on the team. Nikita Scherbak is a 22-year-old who has 25 points in 20 AHL games this year. That’s four lines worth of wingers who could potentially boast enough offense to be fantasy relevant. That entire list has underachieved, perhaps in part because of their lack of talent up the middle, but it also speaks to an overabundance of talent on the wings that could be leveraged if the right trade came up.

The right trades almost never come up. It took Colorado an entire year, and a three-way trade to finally get their home run package for Matt Duchene. You are far more likely to take an L trading off underachieving talent to fill a need. Plus, in a cap system, strengths can become weaknesses in an awful hurry to the point that roster building looks a lot like a game of whack-a-mole.

The point is that while this seems like a lost season for just about everyone on the Canadiens’ roster, there is untapped potential here. Maybe a trade shakes things loose for Galchenyuk or Pacioretty. Both have been more productive of late. Maybe if one of those two (or other veterans) get moved we see Lehkonen flourish in a larger role. Perhaps they finally give Gallagher the minutes that reflect his talent as one of the top offensive producers on the team.

For what it’s worth, Pacioretty’s recent four-game goal-scoring streak came to an end last night, but I maintain he’s got the potential to get hot enough to hit the 30-goal plateau once again.

Torey Krug ended a five-game scoreless drought with a power-play assist. He had been cold with just two points in eight games since Christmas, but this perhaps sparks him again. Krug hasn’t been as prolific as you may have hoped, but he is still on pace for 12 goals and 45 points despite having missed five games and having failed to get much out of his many power play minutes. I’d look for Krug to crank it up a bit in the second half if his PP production kicks up. He’s on pace for 12 PP points, but has hit at least 14 in each of the past four seasons.

It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out between Krug and Charlie McAvoy going forward. The situation is reminiscent of Gostisbehere/Provorov in Philadelphia. It’s clear that McAvoy is the better defenseman overall, but Krug is entrenched as their PP QB. He also has the fat contract that will earn him a longer leash. If Krug isn’t skating on the top PP unit, his minutes would likely dip below 20 per game. $5M annually is a lot to pay for a defenseman skating less than 20 minutes a night. McAvoy might have to wait until 2020-21 when Krug’s contract has run out before he gets those top unit PP minutes. Without those, McAvoy’s potential is capped around 40 points (his current pace has him hitting 45).

The Bruins’ third line was going to have to slow down eventually. Danton Heinen, David Backes and Riley Nash have only one point apiece in three games since their bye week. That doesn’t mean they have cooled off entirely, but I am comfortable suggesting that their respective paces will slow in the second half. Backes probably isn’t hitting 40 points after missing 18 games. Heinen probably isn’t scoring 60 points as a third-line guy. Nash probably isn’t even making it to 30 points. There’s still room for each guy to have relevance, but that two-week wave they rode post-Christmas is likely over.

Matt Murray is out indefinitely following the passing of his father. Presumably, he will be back after the All-Star break, but no one really knows in this unfortunate circumstance.

This does mean Tristan Jarry remains an appealing option for the coming weeks, and likely beyond. Jarry has flat out been better than Murray. In a tight battle for a playoff spot in the Metro, the Penguins may be forced to ride the hot hand. It’s something they have done before. And of course, Murray has also dealt with many injuries, which only ramps up the utility of Jarry that much more.

That said, Jarry got smacked around by the Ducks last night. That might even be enough to summon an appearance from Casey DeSmith!

Daniel Sprong was either hurt or benched for the second half of last night’s game. Whatever the case, Sprong has been ineffective outside of one magical game. He and Dominik Simon have not lived up to the Conor Sheary/Jake Guentzel potential we hoped they might have.

Speaking of Guentzel, he got a top PP unit shift thanks to an Evgeni Malkin penalty and scored a goal ending a seven-game scoring drought. It’s going to take some kind of move or injury to get him back onto the Crosby line and perhaps the top PP unit regularly to get him going consistently. We absolutely cannot rule out a hot run at some point, but it’s looking bleak.

The Ducks are finally healthy and looking like a dangerous team. Check out their lines from last night:

That third line with Adam Henrique, Ondrej Kase and Nick Ritchie has some serious scoring punch. Kase has six goals and nine points in the last nine games. He won’t do it every night, but will threaten to score 20 goals and 45 points this season.

Since Ryan Getzlaf returned to the Ducks lineup Rickard Rakell has eight goals and 14 points in 16 games.

The Blue Jackets have placed Sonny Milano on IR for 4-6 weeks with a torn oblique.

Tough break for a young player who has done well in a limited role. Milano has only been skating 10:52 per game, but has been effective in those minutes. He has scored 1.93 Points/60 at 5-on-5, the bulk of that production coming from goals. Some of that is because of a goosed shooting percentage up at 22%, but these are still flashes of brilliance that portend to later success.

It will be interesting to see where Milano fits in when he returns. While he has been firmly buried in the bottom six, John Tortorella has been adamant about finding offensive minutes for Milano including consistent use on the second power play unit. Milano might need some AHL time upon returning, and perhaps the Blue Jackets will have found other sources of secondary offense. That could just mean Milano continues to fly under the radar heading into next season.

All this said, Milano is behind Pierre-Luc Dubois and Oliver Bjorkstrand in terms of young Blue Jacket players waiting to breakout.

Columbus also claimed Jussi Jokinen off waivers yesterday. He won’t do much to help with their scoring woes, but he has been a positive possession player at both of his previous stops this season. He’ll offer some reasonable defensive depth while the Blue Jackets deal with injuries to Milano, Brandon Dubinsky and Cam Atkinson.

With Jokinen out of LA the Kings have recalled forward prospect Michael Amadio who is extremely intriguing given his point-per-game pace as a 21-year-old in the AHL this season. Amadio scored just one point in his cup of coffee with the Kings earlier and may not be any more successful if once again used in a bottom-six role. His most common linemates last time around were Andy Andreoff, Nic Dowd and Brooks Laich. Fingers crossed we see him get some time with Tyler Toffoli.

Some goodies to discuss in Elliotte Friedman’s latest 31 Thoughts:

16. The Blue Jackets have watched Alex Galchenyuk pretty closely at times. I’m not sure if they are still interested, but they are looking for scoring.

As I noted earlier this week, Galchenyuk has been rolling with 18 points in his last 22 games. As much as the fit has always been awkward in Montreal, I’m not sure going from the league’s 29th scoring team to the 28th would help him all that much.

17. Chicago coach Joel Quenneville reiterated to local reporters this week that Corey Crawford will be back this season. That’s good news for the Blackhawks because last week there was some real worry about whether or not Crawford would be able to return.

I don’t think we can yet guarantee a return for Crawford. We constantly see players make returns earlier than their set timelines, but in Crawford’s case we have no timeline. There’s also the matter of Chicago’s dwindling playoff hopes. Perhaps they should consider shutting him down and packing it in for one year, only to come back stronger than ever. I doubt that this is in their DNA, but Crawford may also force this upon them. If the playoffs started today the Blackhawks would have the 13th highest draft lottery odds, but with a little selective tanking, they could get into the top eight. A top-eight pick is one who could likely make the jump right away and inject some more life into a decaying roster.

That’s all just a thought experiment, however. We should operate under the expectation that Crawford may return. I would use this opportunity to try and buy low. Crawford sits sixth in save percentage among goalies with at least 10 starts on the year at .929 and has consistently been one of the best. Among goalies with 50 starts over the past five years he is tied for second at .922. I am loath to invest in goalies with injury concerns, but there’s enough upside here that this could be worth it.

What would I move for Crawford? Not a healthy solution in goal, but could you offer a solution at another position as a gambit to add another starter? That’s the approach I would try to take.

If Crawford does miss the season, they probably need to hit the trade market. Jeff Glass has had some success filling in for Crawford, but he probably isn’t good enough to run as the starter for the final 35+ games. Anton Forsberg has been a train wreck. Might we see the return of JF Berube? Seems like another non-solution. It’s entirely possible that the Blackhawks simply aren’t a good enough team to support a sub-standard goalie option.

Ramblings: Singing the Bye Week Blues (Jan 9)

The NHL Bye Weeks are here to ruin your season. 13 teams play only one game this week and over half the league with two or fewer. Next week isn’t much better.

Worse, the week after is All-Star Weekend so we’ve got three very thin weeks in a row. Basically, January is a write-off. I don’t know too many providers who offered the option, but the move was to combine January 8-21 into one matchup week, and then combining January 21-February 4 into another would have been the way to go. Head-to-head has some element of randomness, but the bye week and All-Star effects are perhaps a little much.

Of course, if you aren’t in a head-to-head league the impact is muddle, but what of all the extra back-to-backs shoehorning an extra five to seven days in the middle of the schedule forced? I don’t know that we can measure the exact impact of these factors since every team is facing them, but they clearly exist.

In a season where every team plays 82 games across 26 weeks each team should play just under three games a week. Subtract a week and we get these back-to-backs. Add in breaks for holidays, All-Star Weekend and other issues with scheduling like arena availability and you get a schedule riddled with back-to-backs.

I also don’t know that these long breaks actually doing anything for the athletes. They still have to play the 82-game schedule. Playing it in a more compressed fashion means playing more games in a compromised state, not less. A week isn’t enough time to completely shake off an injury, even a mild one.

Worse, is the “use it or lose it” effect. A week away from skating hard is going to reduce the maximal output of these athletes. Asking them to go zero to 60 is impossible. After All-Star weekend, players will have had three breaks of at least three days in a month’s span. I’d never give them any breaks longer than two days. All that stopping and starting? Sounds like they are asking for injuries.

Consider the plight of the New York Rangers who go from a back-to-back, to six days off, to another back-to-back. Someone is pulling a groin.

I didn’t even mention how insane the schedule has been for the Senators who have been in a tailspin since heading over to Sweden. The Avalanche’s fate hasn’t been nearly as miserable, so the anecdotal evidence is spotty, but you cannot tell me that this is something you want for your favourite team. And of course, the nincompoops in the Oilers front office are begging to be next in line.

Be rid of the bye week and any other events forcing teams to take extended breaks that can only be made up by packing the rest of their schedule even tighter.

Nylander has scored five points in the 10 games that Auston Matthews has missed, and 25 in 33 otherwise. Mind you, that with-Matthews pace is for only 62 points, so he hasn’t hit all new levels, but this has been his best season in terms of 5-on-5 scoring, where he is averaging 2.15 points/60, clearing the all-important 2.0-points/60 barrier. However, with that 5-on-5 spike has come a decline in power play scoring. More time with Matthews plus some improved PP results could lead to a big second half, but perhaps his point-per-game breakout will have to wait until next season, his fourth (cue trumpets).

You can’t call the Columbus power play a complete dud any longer. They are 10/59 with the man advantage since the start of December, a mediocre 16.9%. In this stretch Pierre-Luc Dubois is the team leader with seven PPP, but Artemi Panarin and Seth Jones are just behind with six apiece.

Jones has fully usurped the #1 defenseman slot from Zach Werenski. He is up to 16 points in 20 games since the start of December, high-end stuff.

Panarin looks like a great bet for the second half, he is trending up with 20 points in 19 games since the start of December. Adding Dubois to his line and improving the power play has done wonders!

If you’ve been following along you know how smitten I’ve grown with Dubois and he keeps proving himself to be a great option. He is locked in as their #1 centerman. Since November 20th when he was jumped up the lineup Dubois has skated under 15 minutes only twice. He has eight goals, 18 points and 61 SOG in those 24 games. That’s quality production.

Do you have to get in on Dubois now? Not necessarily. Between now and the All-Star break no team plays fewer games than the Blue Jackets with five. They have just two remaining this week and then hit their bye, but it’s almost a double bye as they have another four-day layoff built into their schedule after returning on January 18. It’s a crazy schedule quirk that makes you want to divest yourself of just about every Blue Jacket after Friday’s game against Vancouver.

Sergei Bobrovsky’s December record screams opportunity to me. He went 4-6-2 with a 3.46 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage, helping to bring his season-long numbers back to reasonable levels. Use this opportunity to get in on the best head-to-head goalie out there.

I’d normally take his monthly splits with a grain of salt, but Bobrovsky has managed to peak in March every year, right in time for head-to-head playoffs. The only year he didn’t was the year that he was hurt. He has a .932 save percentage in 73 games in March. Once again, he’ll be forced to ratchet it up for a Columbus team in the thick of a playoff hunt, but one that should be getting players back healthy and one that has it’s #1 centerman improving with each passing month. It’s building again. Ignore the signs at your own peril.

It’s been four weeks since he first got hurt, an injury that was supposed to cost him at least six weeks. It’s starting to look like he’ll be back before the All-Star break, but who knows? The Blues hit their bye week after tonight’s game, and don’t return until next Tuesday in Toronto, which is right about the five-week mark. The cautious approach would have him wait until after the All-Star break, but players are making a habit of tossing caution out the window and of re-writing injury timelines.

Doesn’t sound like it will be long term, but Carolina’s Sebastian Aho is battling injury and may not go tomorrow night. As one of only four teams playing four games this week Aho was the top option to provide an advantage, but this injury obviously derails the situation, right as their top line was getting hot again.

Adam Lowry is questionable to play for the Jets tonight, which would be his second straight game of absence. Brendan Lemieux was recalled though no guarantees he sees time. Jack Roslovic was recalled after Mark Scheifele went down, but it took Lowry’s subsequent injury for Roslovic to get a look.

Roslovic skated 7:57 on the fourth line in his NHL debut, but did see time on the top PP unit with Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Co. All things considered, not the worst opportunity.

Lowry’s injury has derailed my plans to mine his use on the top PP unit during this shortened week. Hopefully he plays the Jets’ remaining two games.

We are probably beyond Cody Franson having fantasy value, but he was waived by Chicago yesterday. He led the team in Corsi-For%, but this is nothing new for him. He has posted above-average possession numbers at every stop yet cannot bag a permanent home. He is a flawed player, but I suspect he could help a lot of teams in a small role.

Ramblings: Montour, Brodie, Dadonov, Hischier Among Players Slipping From Relevance (Dec 15)

Kudos to Garth Snow and Doug Weight for turning the Islanders into this season’s fire-wagon team. These guys have played 32 games and 22 of those have had six goals or more scored in them. I’m not even shoehorning those shootout goals into the result to skew the stats like NHL.com does. These are actual goals contributing to peoples’ fantasy teams. It is glorious.

It isn’t like they are just steamrolling teams either. Everyone in Islanders games gets to have fun, except the goalies. Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak are unplayable in you have GAA or Save Percentage as categories.

The Islanders are so giving they even allowed the Blue Jackets to score a power-play goal. UNHEARD OF!

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored that power-play goal, extending his hot run to nine points in the last nine games. However, we should point out that his power play usage has slipped since Alexander Wennberg returned to the lineup. As has become a running joke, PP time in Columbus would matter more if their power play were worth a damn. Still, I think we’d all be a lot more confident investing in Dubois if he were used on the top unit.

Wennberg notched a pair of assists. Perhaps it is time that he starts producing. Oliver Bjorkstrand joined Wennberg and Cam Atkinson on the second line, bringing his hot scoring to the ice-cold duo. Bjorkstrand notched three assists last night and has seven points in the last five games. I’m not yet ready to jump on board with these guys, but start watching to see if there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Nico Hischier is starting to slip from relevance. It wouldn’t take much to have him pop back up, but he is currently mired in a funk with no points in four straight and only six points in the last 14 games. He still isn’t consistently being used on the Devils’ top power play unit, even after Adam Henrique was traded. In fact, Hischier wasn’t even skating on the top unit with Taylor Hall joining Marcus Johansson and Kyle Palmieri on the list of injured Devils.

Hischier has still been skating with Hall at even strength when Hall has been in the lineup, but I am not sure there’s a Devil player worth owning if Hall misses extended time.

Hischier is still on pace for 53 points thanks to a hot start to the season, but those hot starts can force managers to hang onto players for too long. Each league is different, but a 50-55 -point centerman is waiver fodder in a lot of leagues, especially with his shot volume unlikely to reach into the 200-SOG range.

It’s probably safe to jump off of Tom Wilson now. He has been held off the board in three straight games. Sure, he’s still skating with Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Ovechkin at even strength, but that won’t last much longer now that he’s gone cold. The return of TJ Oshie also looms over this situation. Sure, Oshie hasn’t yet returned, but he is expected to practice today and could be back as soon as Saturday.

Oshie’s return may not bump Wilson off the top line, but top line usage doesn’t guarantee points for Wilson. Oshie’s return will absolutely bump Brett Connolly off the top power play unit. Connolly has scored four goals in the past eight games acting as a power play specialist. Not much use for Connolly outside of daily fantasy, however.

Andre Burakovsky has languished on the third line since returning from injury with one point in four games. He has skated under 15 minutes with only secondary PP time in each game. No doubt some of this is due to getting back up to speed coming off of injury, but it’s not a good situation for folks hoping for a breakout.

Burakovsky hasn’t had much in the way of puck luck, so we should still consider him a strong producer on a per-minute basis, but we may have to wait a little longer for him to get the minutes actually required for consistent fantasy relevance.

I also worry about Burakovsky’s shot volume. It’s going to be really hard for him to breakout if he doesn’t become a willing shooter. The top two centermen on the Capitals are both extreme playmakers. They need players to shoot because they won’t do it themselves. There’s no doubt Burakovsky could play effectively with Backstrom or Evgeny Kuznetsov, but it may not result in as many goals as putting shooters on the wings of those players would. Burakovsky may be stuck as a third-liner without more shot volume.

Finally, Burakovsky’s never going to get a bite of the Capitals’ top power play unit unless there’s an injury to Backstrom or Kuznetsov. Keep these factors in mind when projecting him forward.

Interesting dynamic for Anaheim’s lines with Corey Perry out:

Kevin Roy took full advantage of the linemate bump scoring a pair of goals. I’d be more interested if he was also seeing top unit PP time, but in a deep enough league Roy has value.

Rickard Rakell has only two points in five games since returning from injury. Show some patience here, the big goal-scorer will surely get it rolling soon enough.

Brandon Montour has just three points in the last 10 games. In the never-ending game of whack-a-mole we have played with Duck defensemen he is currently on the outs with Cam Fowler standing as the lone defenseman seeing top unit PP time. Probably waiver wire time for Montour.

Colton Parayko has stepped into some big minutes with Alex Pietrangelo on the shelf, skating over 27 minutes in each of the past three games. He has yet to take advantage with just one point in three games. That’s a small sample, however. I suspect he’d flourish with an extended look.

Vladimir Sobotka was expected to see a bit of a scoring boost with Vladimir Tarasenko moved to his line, but the forward has gone three straight games without a point. Even with Jaden Schwartz out Sobotka isn’t seeing top unit PP time, so he isn’t overly interesting. Mind you, he has gotten some good looks, including missing a wide-open net against the Lightning the other night.

With Schwartz out, it is Stastny who has gotten back into the mix on the top PP unit, but he has only three points in the last nine games. Since he landed in St. Louis as a free agent Stastny has been unable to hang onto consistent top unit PP usage or time with Tarasenko. Some pairings just don’t work.

Evgenii Dadonov has not scored in two games since returning from injury. He was also trending downward with just two points in his previous six games before injury. At least he was seeing top unit PP time before getting hurt. Since his return the Panthers have stuck with the two-defenseman look giving both Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad top unit PP time.

Dadonov is now spending his even strength shifts alongside Vincent Trocheck, who is awesome, but is not up to par with Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. He isn’t seeing top unit PP time. I really question why he’s on my roster. Dadonov will likely end up on the top line and top PP unit again at some point, but who can afford to wait with juicier options on the waiver wire? I don’t think Dadonov has done enough to earn our faith in shallower formats.

The latest on Devan Dubnyk:

The timeline on Dubnyk still feels a bit up in the air. He was walking around fine on Wednesday, and all Bruce Boudreau has indicated is that Dubnyk won’t play this weekend. There is speculation that he will travel with the team for their road trip starting on Sunday. Could he be ready by Tuesday in Ottawa? No information was provided on the results of Dubnyk’s MRI on Wednesday, so we remain highly in the dark.

Alex Stalock has been mildly intriguing. Outside of a 7-2 drubbing against the Jets, Stalock has been adequate in all of his starts. His career numbers aren’t particularly flattering, but you should know by now that any goalie reaching the NHL is capable of putting together a good string of starts. Obviously, he’s on your radar after shutting out the Leafs, but I don’t consider him one of the league’s stronger backups.

The Wild have also called up Steve Michalek from the minors. Michalek’s AHL numbers are strong, but I question why he spent five games in the ECHL this season. Michalek may get a start this weekend simply because it would be awfully demanding on Stalock to have him start three games in four nights, but coaches have been known to eschew such notions if they don’t trust the guy coming up from the minors.

Juuse Saros remains one of the most intriguing backups in the league, but there are a few hiccups in his fantasy stock. He is barely playing averaging a start once every couple of weeks. Sure, they have had him racking up the miles going back and forth between Nashville and the AHL club in Milwaukee to keep fresh, but those AHL starts can’t help your fantasy team. He has also been bad. Heading into last night’s action his save percentage was below .900 in both the NHL and AHL. His 46-save shutout certainly cured that issue at the NHL level.

If you knew you could get more starts out of him, Saros would likely be of great value. However they have only one back-to-back between now and the start of February.

After losing 10 in a row, the Flyers have now put together a five-game winning streak. Credit Brian Elliott for settling in to provide some effective goaltending, but we should also give some credit to the coaching staff for splitting Jakub Voracek off the top line to giving them a couple of effective lines.

Voracek has eight points in the last five games skating on the second line with Valtteri Filppula and Michael Raffl. Raffl has six points over these five games, while Filppula has five. Neither are fantasy relevant in most leagues, but you could surely take advantage of their hot streaks in daily fantasy or in deep formats.

The Flyers have a loaded Monday/Wednesday/Friday/Saturday slate next week with favourable matchups against the Red Wings and Sabres. This is an opportunity to optimize your roster for the week ahead.

Wayne Simmonds had a four-game scoring streak snapped, but he remains a person of interest, especially since being bumped onto the second line.

Ryan O’Reilly snapped a 12-game goalless drought. It also served to extend his point-scoring streak to three games. Small victories are all you can hang your hat on with struggling players.

O’Reilly’s point total (20 in 31 games) isn’t even that bad. He is on pace for 53 points. Considering the Sabres’ power play has vanished, this is a solid pace. It would take much for him to get back into the 55-60 range we have come to expect. Although, it is getting harder to have any faith that the Sabres’ power play will turn things around. I am hanging in there with Jack Eichel, Evander Kane and Rasmus Ristolainen. No one else, though.

Kane should not be dropped, but is a guy I am advising you to shop. No guarantee his trade destination has him skating 20+ minutes a night.

The latest Blackhawk PP combos have Brandon Saad on the outside looking in with Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook paired on the back end of the top unit and Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Artem Anisimov up front.

Will this new formation stick? Unlikely! This may be enough to nudge Saad off your fantasy roster depending on the depth of your league. Saad is still an elite 5-on-5 scorer, despite the poor results thus far, and his shot volume remains high-end.

let’s take a moment to appreciate Seabrook regaining some relevance. He has skated 20+ minutes in four of the last six games, has three points in those six games as well as 17 SOG. This is also with Cody Franson out so don’t overreact here, but perhaps the veteran could help you for a short spell.

TJ Brodie has gone ice cold with just two points in the last 12 games. He is still skating on the top PP unit, giving you exposure to Calgary’s best offensive weapons, but with PP chances going down so too will his production. He is now on pace for 41 points and 120 SOG. That makes for waiver fodder in your average league.

To be clear, Brodie has value and will finish among the top 40 or so in defenseman scoring. It’s just that of those top scoring defensemen typically only 25-30 are worth actually keeping on your roster for the full 82 games. Brodie’s 41 points don’t offer enough value above replacement to be worth keeping around all year. Use him while he is hot, and then cycle him out when he is not. If someone else decides to grab him and hold on for all 82 that’s an advantage to you.

Just think about all the games that Brodie isn’t going to score any points in. If he finishes with 41 points, that means at least 41 games where he didn’t produce much. And his shot volume isn’t so high that he is offering much value when he isn’t scoring. He’s in a similar camp as Jake Gardiner, who fantasy owners are also clinging to against better judgement.

Assuming you have enough moves, you’d get a lot more out of this roster spot bouncing from hot option to hot option. Matt Dumba, for instance, offered fantasy owners a ton of value over the past couple of weeks with Jared Spurgeon on the shelf. Take advantage of enough of these injury fillers and you could turn that Brodie slot into a 55-point player, rather than settling for Brodie’s 41.
