"The train departed with all remaining students five minutes ago," Dumbledore said around the lemon drop he was enjoying.

"I... am, I'm terribly sorry," the ghost of a man began.

"You have nothing to be sorry for," Dumbledore interrupted. "Though I must admit, I am rather surprised to see you after the events of last week."

"Ah, well yes, it appears that I have some unfinished business. You know I'm quite annoyed at what that hasshack managed to reduce me to; I'm also disappointed that you and my fellow members of faculty just took the changes in my person with only the briefest of questions," the apparition stated.

"Words, Quirinus, are insufficient to convey my regret, and abject grief over your situation," Dumbledore said.

"And yet, those are words which you are using," the shade of Quirinus glared at the elder professor for a moment. "No matter, I am here now and of sound mind for the first time in over a year, if not body."

"It does my old bones good to hear that you can find a silver lining in all this," Dumbledore said.

Quirinus snorted, "Silver lining? Spare me your platitudes; I imagine my form adds enough silvery additions to my complexion. You know I do believe that I've officially reached tenure even if I wasn't myself this past school year."

"The siren's call of tenure to the academic is no chain upon the spirit," Dumbledore said.

"Tell that to binns. You do recall that I was your muggle studies chair prior to this? I must confess curiosity about something. Seeing how I can no longer be counted among the living, what exactly can this supposed curse of the Defense professorship do against me?" Quirinus said.

Dumbledore's silence was conspicuous in its presence.

29. One of the many teachers knocked off by the DADA curse returns as a ghost and suggests to Dumbledore that little further can be done to depose a ghost from the position, else Binns would be gone too.

So shortly after Quirrell bites the dust, Dumbledore agrees to let them have a go at it.

I'm going to yoink Cal's take on this one for sharing purposes...

If you're derailing canon, derail it. Don't keep shoving it back onto the tracks, the stations of the canon whether that's Lockhart 'teaching' or Harry getting involved in the Triwizard are GONE.

How about this. I've recently encountered two very interesting ideas; firstly, Binns is still around because the Hogwarts rules on tenure are a devil to get around, and secondly, Quirrel was NOT a willing accomplice of Voldie; he was possessed for the entirety of Harry's first year.

The ghost? It's Quirrinus Quirrel. He's got tenure, and he's got a major axe to grind with the Dark Lord who took his body over and ultimately got him killed.

Second year goes much like canon but with a much more competent, much deader, non-stammering, and absolutely bloody furious Ghost!Quirrel in Lockie's place, leading amongst other things to Harry never getting outed as a Parselmouth.

Remus is brought in third year, but not teaching DADA, and sticks around due to reasons.

Fourth-year, Barty Crouch Jr tries to replace someone else and gets got - maybe by underestimating whoever he's trying to sub in for, maybe by Dumbledorius Interruptus, whatever way Voldie's idiotically overcomplicated masterplan goes exactly as well as it should have - leading to Dumbles successfully trapping Voldemort in Riddle Manor.

Sirius's name gets cleared due to Dumbles very publicly presenting Wormtail to the collected Wizengamot, and Harry gets the quiet year he's been praying for as the Triwizard goes off without a hitch; through the course of fourth year; Dumbles interrogates the Voldieghost and starts knocking off Horcruxes.

Summer between fourth and fifth years Dumbles has dealt with everything but the Harrycrx and starts looking into ways to deal with it without killing Harry, eventually settling on basilisk venom with Fawkes standing by to stop the poison doing for the Potter: this works. The Wizarding World never learns Voldie was in a position to come back. Possible sequel about Harry and his friends, post-Hogwarts, finding themselves up against the Malfoys et al over what the future of the Wizarding World is going to look like.
