Galiff Street is the one of the oldest and largest weekly pet markets in India. In the 18th century the last Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-daula had designated a certain area for elephant stables. Gradually, this area attracted elephant and other animal merchants and eventually a market was formed where animals were bought and sold. This place came to be known as Hatibagan (hati in Bengali means elephant while bagan means garden). By the mid twentieth century, the area had attracted merchants and buyers of all kinds and the decision was made to shift the pet market to a less constricted area, and hence the pet market relocated to Galiff Street and Hatibagan continued to be a general market. Galiff Street pet merchants claim that presently the market, directly and indirectly, supports almost 2.5 lakh people.

Cha ar ta;; aesthetics + small blurb under the cut 

Cha ar ta, a small cafe nestled between the decade old buildings and narrow alleyways of Hatibagan. The interior has been decorated with keeping in mind the taste of modern people, mainly the youth. A monochromatic color palette, minimalist furniture, indoor plants in the corners. The only reflection of the 'old Kolkata charm' is the rough, patchy wall left completely bare in an invitation to the visitor's imagination. A simple menu, affordable prices, and, on rare occasions, a jar of cookies straight out of the owner's private kitchen. Management definitely follows the mindset of 'less is more' and the regular customers take great joy in the quiet comfort of simplicity.

প্রশাসন কড়া, লকডাউনে শুনশান রাস্তা। পুলিশের টহল অলিগলিতেও

নিজস্ব সংবাদদাতা: ক্রমশ বেড়ে চলা করোনা সংক্রমনের হার  কমাতে রাজ্যে পূর্ণ লকডাউনের আজ  দ্বিতীয় দিন।  দ্বিতীয় দিনের লকডাউনে কার্যত কলকাতা থেমে গেছে। আর এই লকডাউন সফল করতে পাল্লা দিয়ে তৎপরতা বেড়েছেভ পুলিশমহলেও।

কলকাতার প্রতিটি রাস্তার মোড়ে মোড়ে চলছে নাকা চেকিং, নিয়মভঙ্গকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর ব্যবস্থা, ড্রোন উড়িয়ে পাড়ার অলিগলিতেও রাখা হচ্ছে নজরদারি। রাজ্য সরকারের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী সপ্তাহে দু’দিন করে সম্পূর্ণ লকডাউন রাখা হবে রাজ্যে। আজ দ্বিতীয় দিন।  বৃহস্পতিবার ছিল লকডাউনের প্রথম দিন। প্রথম দিন স্বতস্ফূর্তভাবেই রাজ্যবাসীকে এই লোকডাউন পালন করতে দেখা গিয়েছিল।    লালবাজার থেকেও সিসি ক্যামেরাতে চোখ রেখেছে পুলিশ। এ দিন সকাল ৬টা থেকেই চলছে লকডাউন। রাস্তার উপরে বসানো হয়েছে ব্যারিকেড। যে সমস্ত গাড়ি রাস্তায় চলছে তাদের চালকের কাছ থেকে পরিচয়পত্র দেখতে চাওয়া হচ্ছে। কলকাতা শহরের বেশির ভাগ রাস্তায় এমনই দৃশ্য দেখা যাচ্ছে। যদিও প্রথা মাফিক  এলাকার স্থানীয় বাসিন্দাদের অযথা ঘোরাঘুরি করতেও দেখা গিয়েছে।

বৃহস্পতিবার উড়ান পরিষেবা চালু থাকলেও আজ কলকাতা ও বাগডোগরা বিমানবন্দরে বিমান ওঠানামা করবে না। রাজ্য সরকারের অনুরোধে কেন্দ্রীয়  বিমান পরিবহণ মন্ত্রক এই সিদ্ধান্ত জানিয়েছে। রেল বোর্ডকেও রাজ্য সরকার লকডাউন চলাকালীন রাজ্যে যাত্রী ট্রেন না চালানোর আর্জি জানিয়েছিল কারণ যাত্রীদের জন্য স্টেশনগুলিতে কোনও রকম পরিবহণের ব্যবস্থা করা যাবে না।  শুক্রবার রাত আটটা নাগাদ বোর্ড সরকারের প্রস্তাব মেনে রাজ্যের সমস্ত দূরপাল্লার ট্রেন বাতিল হয়েছে।

এদিকে স্বাস্থ্য দফতরের বিবৃতি অনুসারে  রাজ্যে আক্রান্তের মোট সংখ্যা বৃহস্পতিবারের তুলনায় সামান্য কম। গত চব্বিশ ঘণ্টায় রাজ্যের ২৩টি জেলায় মোট করোনা আক্রান্তের সংখ্যা ২২১৬। বৃহস্পতিবার সেই সংখ্যা ছিল ২৪৩৬।  কলকাতায় সংক্রমিতের সংখ্যা সবচেয়ে বেশি। গত ২৪ ঘণ্টায় শহরে করোনা আক্রান্ত হয়েছেন ৬৯৯ জন। মৃত্যু হয়েছে ১৬ জনের। রাজ্যে মোট সংক্রমিতের সংখ্যা বেড়ে দাঁড়াল ৫৩,৯৭৩ জন। তবে তার মধ্যে সুস্থ হয়ে বাড়ি ফিরে গিয়েছেন ৩৩,৫২৯ জন। দেশে মোট আক্রান্তের সংখ্যা হল ১৩ লক্ষ ৩৬ হাজার ৮৬১। এ নিয়ে দেশে মোট ৩১ হাজার ৩৫৮ জনের প্রাণ কাড়ল করোনাভাইরাস।
