well, this is the last chapter i’ll post of this au. i’m going through the roughest time in my life and i just feel like it would be for the best that i stop posting this. thats it. i’ve got nothing else to say.

Part 3: A man named Ace Anarchy

18 years old Ace - Age of Anarchy Year 1

Boom.

    Boom.

    BOOM.

    Margot and Honey grumbled in tandem.

    One year without  sleep.

    One. Year.

    They deserved that, he guessed.

    “Why? Why can't they do this at noon?” Honey complained, as she sat up.

     Carrie, who was already awake, handed her a cup of tea.

     “It wouldn’t be as annoying as it is at this hour,” she replied and went down on of the side aisles of the cathedral.

     Ace sighed and sat up. Every day, every morning, it was the same: civilians demanding their blood, police thirsty for justice and even prodigies who wanted to help them and were there only to annoy those who annoyed them. It was a vicious cycle that did not seem to end and only generated lazy fights from the Anarchists’ part, who had not slept well for a year.

    One. Year.

    They must have seen it coming, of course. The government's duty was to oppose them, imprison them, fight them. While all of its first acts of destruction, the assassination of the mayor and the invasion of the cathedral had created  enough chaos for the next ten years, Gatlon’s government remained vigilant and resisting. Every day there were more deaths, more chaos, and more anarchy. The spark that the Anarchists had generated was turning into a fire, and that generated the most pleasant sensation of pride in Ace's chest.

    But that did not imply that he did not want to sleep one night on a mattress and not a mass bench, surrounded by his fellow Anarchists who slept just like him: terrible.

    They had tried to sleep in the catacombs, found by Ace the first week they spent there, while he was sniffing one of the side aisles. Running his fingers over the walls, it all started when he perceived a void in them, so he formed a ‘door’ and found himself with narrow stairs and descents. Without hesitation, Ace went down the stairs and found the most beautiful and creepy place he had ever witnessed: the catacombs. Dark, so full of bones that it was practically the only thing visible, and calm. Very, very calm. Within a minute, he told the others about his discovery, and they tried to sleep there however, all but Margot (and Ace, of course) were overwhelmed by the coldness of the place and preferred to return to the noisy quality of the main nave.

    Ace and Margot followed them, as they had all agreed to sleep in the same place; in case they smashed the barrier that Carrie, Bruce and Ace had built (with the houses of the old cathedral’s neighbors and a couple of Carrie's plants) to prevent anyone from entering the cathedral except them (Carrie, Margot and Ace, the only Anarchists whose true identity still remained unknown for the public), who went out once a week to buy food and other supplies.

    It was a hard life.

    But at least they had a roof over their heads and the ability to steal food without making a fuss.

    Honey stood up and started walking in circles, searching for something while she muttered under her breath. She had a corner all to herself, since no one wanted to sleep next to ten combs of ten different varieties of bees and wasps. Her corner was draped over because she considered privacy was a 'right' and not a 'privilege'; luckily, she did, since the mess in that place made Ace want to  tidy everything up in one blink.

    For his part, Ace slept on the very chancel, next to Mary (not to say under her). He had his bed-bench (it had been a cathedral bench once, but he and Bruce had rebuilt it so they could lie down ‘comfortably’) and his belongings, all carefully stored in wooden boxes (which had been part of a bench once, too). His corner was simple, but clean and pleasant.

    Well, as nice as a Gothic chancel could be.

    The rest of them also had the corners of it. Carrie, Bruce and Leroy slept one on each side of the aisles and Henry and Margot slept in the center of the main nave, as they had the fewest belongings (Henry had his clothes and art supplies and Margot had a couple of books and quite high fashion clothes). Carrie had personalized her corner by filling it with bright colors and mostly green; it was a small biome. Bruce and Leroy's (because they slept in the same area) was practically a laboratory and competed with Honey's place for the top spot for ‘messiest corner.’ Ace stayed away from those areas, since he did not need to circulate through them, nor did he want to; from the very moment they had moved there, he started rebuilding parts of the cathedral to turn it into a house (the first thing was a shower, because they needed to wash the blood from their clothes and skin; the second was to install gas for heating and cooking, which had a cost, but it was worth it in order to be able to eat things that did not come out of a package).

    It wasn't easy, but it was better than dying in the streets for being themselves.

    Ace stood up and put on his helmet. It was the first thing he did every morning: put on his helmet. It was his armor, his sword, his second heart. Without that helmet, he would be nothing at all, and he owed it all to his brother, David. That thought made him want to laugh at how ironic that was, as he knew that his brother didn't totally agree with what Ace had done (and did every day) for prodigies and his release.

    A faint smile crept across his face as another boom echoed throughout the nave and it made him tremble a little. He slipped on his leather shoes (stolen shortly before the Gatlon Bridge was destroyed) and cracked his knuckles, rousing himself.

    “Good morning, Anarchists,” Ace greeted as he walked down the nave and donned his black blazer with gold details. “Shall we end this for once and for all?”

    Margot, who was lying on her 'bed' with a frown, stood up abruptly and with her hand, she threatened to grab her hat that wasn't there. The girl snorted.

    “Where’s my hat?” Margot demanded, furious, because she needed her hat to be able to go outside and fight the military and the police without revealing her identity (although it made no sense, since her entire family was dead and she was already exposed every day anyway). She said it was to ‘keep up the appearances.’ Ace bit back a laugh, snapped his fingers and with his hands he handed Margot her hat. He had seen it the day before at Honey's mess.

    “Thanks,” she murmured and put it on. She was ready now, since she never changed her clothes except when she washed them in her morning showers (like everyone except Honey to tell the truth, she had ten dresses in the same colors). Henry suddenly roused himself, and ran a hand over his face to reactivate its blood circulation. Ace continued to parade down the nave.

    “Leroy, Bruce, wake up,” Ace asked, in a slightly singsong voice and he ducked into the boys' corner against his will. They were the only ones who slept well, either because they were heavy sleepers or because they used sleeping substances. Both were likely to be true.

    Ace resisted  the urge to hold  his nose because of the smells that place was emitting, and clapped his hands to wake them up. boys, who slept soundly in their beds. The applause didn't work out, so Ace decided to go rough mode and directly split their beds in half. Leroy and Bruce woke up to splinters and dust, startled, as expected.

    “Come on, we have work to do,” Ace encouraged them, and walked away from that stinking corner. He did not go to wake Carrie up since she was always the first to wake up, she put the ‘early’ in ‘the early bird catches the worm.’

     And yet, she was already waiting for him at the doors of the cathedral, with all her disguise on her. They nodded at each other, as a greeting. They had a respectful relationship, period, nothing more. While Honey and Margot were a tornado and a fire, Carrie was just the sound of leaves falling to the ground; minimal, indistinguishable.  she gave her opinion only every now and then, and even so, she was the most helpful of the group: she prepared breakfast with Ace every morning, and she was ready for anything, as long as it was in silence (except for the battles of course, that was too much to ask).

    Carrie Harper was undoubtedly indecipherable.

    “Morning, Miss Harper,” Ace greeted and smiled behind his helmet.

    “Morning, Mr Anarchy,” Carrie replied and handed him a blood-red flower.

    Ace arched an eyebrow.

    “It’s for our victory. I know you know what will happen today,” Carrie explained as she pulled on her garden gloves, like she needed them.

    “I do, but how do you?” Ace questioned, as he put the flower on the top lapel of his blazer. It gave it a tragic, romantic touch.

   Carrie sighed.

   “I have investigated the government's resources and they’re almost run out of them. Most of the soldiers have died, weapons have been stolen and functionaries have quit. They have no chance against us.”

    Ace smiled, pleased that his analysis had been perfect.

    “And why will we win today?”

    “We will win today because the soldiers, tanks and helicopters that are here now aren't from them but from outside the government. They have reached  out to them for help and they listened, thinking we'd be easy peasy. But we are not, so they will be surprised when they see what we can do.”

    Ace nodded.

   “That’s correct. They don’t know we are prodigies, and we’ll use that advantage against them. Once they see what we can do, they will never come back,” he explained, very happy to know that he was not the only one who understood strategy.

    Honey and Margot made it to the door in two runs. Margot applied mascara to Honey while the other applied red lipstick on the other’s lips. That image gave Ace a sense of familiarity that he hadn't felt in a long time. Not that kind of familiarity.

    Bruce, Leroy and Henry came after them, only in a messier way (although it was true that they were always like this).

    “Ready, Anarchists?” Ace roared and his roar echoed throughout the cathedral.

    “Always,” Margot replied,  and Ace kicked the doors open with an invisible kick. They all came out after her, followed by their battle cry.

    “At all costs!”

     Ace undid a fraction of the wall so they could get out; Bruce and Carrie did the same. Thunder and lightning invaded the sky in seconds, and millions of bees generated deafening hums as they exited the same place as them. Through the corner of his eye, Ace saw how Henry melted on a policeman, until he turned to charred meat, and also how Leroy threw acid bombs from the top of his lungs. Everything was screaming, explosions, buzzing.

    Ace rose from the ground one, two, ten meters, until he was skimming the top of the bell tower. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to feel the  show  without seeing it. Time slowed down for a couple of seconds, and that was enough for him to feel everything around him, moldable like a mass. This is how, when they shot him in the chest, he was able to turn the bullets against whoever had shot them. When bombs were thrown at him, he threw his own tanks at them, then blew them up. When his companions needed help, he shielded them with walls or cars, or attacked back for them. He ripped off roofs from nearby houses, underground pipes, buses, wheels, even firearms. Everything served as a weapon to destroy the enemy, you just had to use it in such a way.

    The best thing was that nothing supposed a superhuman effort.

    Not at all, he was having a better time than ever.

    He felt… powerful. Yes, very powerful. Almost invincible.

    An unstoppable laugh rose up his throat and manifested itself in his acts, as each laugh was synchronized with an act. Hahaha, a tank crushed over ten soldiers. Hahaha, a helicopter turned to ashes. Hahaha, metal pipes shot like arrows. Hahaha, walls crashing into flesh, and bones breaking. Hahaha, skulls cracking from blows to the back of necks. Hahaha, blood on the ground. Hahaha, airplanes compacting like cans. Hahaha, Anarchists laughing. Hahaha, hahaha.

    All the prodigies were laughing at those who had laughed at them, while going through the same act of violence.

     They shouldn't have laughed at us, Ace and James thought.

     And they were right.

     The battle lasted two hours. Only that. Nothing and no one was left, only the  Anarchists and their beloved cathedral. The battle ended gradually, like everything else; they practically realized it was over when they had almost killed each other. They never stopped laughing or smiling; Ace descended gently from the sky and entered the cathedral with his companions, who were covered in dust, blood and other fluids. They all had a triumphant and empowered smile drawn on their lips. They were proud of each other and of themselves.

     Who wouldn't be, after such a historic victory?

     Well done, Ace, James whispered in approval. Well done.

Gorgeous Planters For the Price of a Cup of Coffee

This is one of my favorite projects and posts!

It has all the ingredients: recycle reduce reuse, shoe-string budget, sustainable-savvy-living! Eco-friendly alternatives!

Grab those plastic pots before they go to the dump!

I’ve collected hoards of sturdy black plastic nursery pots from street-side trash piles. Sometimes I feel spoiled  and guilty! I have beautiful shiny bright red planters with cute ladybugs, and of course the classic deep blues, and everything in between—including a modern chic, pink and gold pot—it is less my personal style, but it is so pretty and was fun to make. That pot will be part of a gift; it will hold a growing cutting of one of my plants.

the spray paint will cost an average of $1.50 to $4.85, depending on where you live and where you get your supplies

Their new gift is of a plant came from your plant—thats super cool, and its kind of a sweet bond. You “made,” you designed the decorative planter the plant is presented in!? GASP!

This gift is so unique and thoughtful! and its monetary value is the equal opposite of its sentimental value! it costs almost nothing, but it means a whole lot! YAY!

Following the proper steps to spray painting a planter pot is IMPERATIVE for desired and lasting results. You can’t skip or skim any of it. I’ve tried, multiple times 😆.

The super important steps: spray painting a plastic pot:

1. Clean and Prepare Your Pots—Soak them in bleach and water. Rinse well. Then give them a good scrubbing with dish soap and preferably warm or hot water. Rinse well. Air dry. Get them looking as good as new; repeating any steps you might need to repeat.

For Preparation, some suggest scrubbing the planter a little bit with sandpaper so that those little nicks and scrapes pick up & adhere to the paint better. (This step is not necessary)

2. Find A Nice Place to Paint—Preferably outside. Preferably low wind and good sunlight, or light. If you have a carport, or a well ventilated garage, or shed; even better.

Also, cardboard boxes, newspaper, and similar items are EXTREMELY helpful and useful in all spray painting endeavors. They provide a surface on which it’s okay to spill paint. And they protect your sprays of paint from being carried away by the wind (super frustrating). The cardboard box “shelter” also protects your item from being hit by wind, which usually carries some sand or dust (ruined project) or can knock your pot over while it’s wet, usually screwing everything up.

3. Personal Protective Gear—Wear gloves, any gloves. And it is recommended by health authorities to wear a mask. Whenever I do not wear a mask, I can feel it, and i don’t like it. It DOES feel like you have inhaled particulates of spray paint. Sometimes you even have colorful nose boogies! No, that’s not a good sign. If you don’t have a good mask, and don’t want to buy a cheap mask; tying cloth, a t-shirt, a bandana, something, around your mouth and nose is important; this stuff kills brain cells, you know? Gloves+Mask 

Time To Paint!

4. Begin w Primer:

Apply a spray-paint primer, preferably one made for plastic or difficult surfaces—this step you CANNOT CANNOT SKIP. I have tried, and wind up with paint flaking off of the pots in no time. I have to re-paint the entire thing for an even coat. Its a  huge waste  of resources, all in the name of saving time, and I end up spending way more time and way more supplies. DON’T SKIP THE PRIMER.

To apply the primer:

Often, the directions are on the can. Shake the can sufficiently. Stand a good distance from the pot. Spray a few inches away from the pot. Spray in a sweeping, back and forth, motion. You do not keep your finger pressed on the can; this will ruin it quickly. Press on, sweep, let go. Very peaceful. It’s better to spray too lightly than too heavy; you can always add more, but ya cant reverse the process. Too much paint leaves splotches, and runs of paint down the planter (if you’re going for that look, then definitely over-spray your can of paint, or spray it too closely—the PAINT! not the primer)

Let the coat of primer dry completely. The time for this can range significantly, from 2 hours to 24. Some newer ones are faster. Apply second coat of primer. Again, let this dry completely. Wait until the next day to apply your paint for best results—keyword: Best Results—you don’t HAVE to wait this long...unless you want the best results 😁

5. Time For The Spray Paint!

This is the fun part. Time to let your creativity unleash itself! Even if you just use one solid color for the entire project, the results are awesome! I’ve done this countless times; especially in projects where continuity was key. Even just making a shiny blue pot brings sincere satisfaction. 

What Kind of Spray Paint is Best?

Outdoor Grade/Made For Plastic/High-Gloss

This is a tough, all around bad-ass can of paint. These qualities are going to get you the best results. That being said! They are not necessary for the success of the project; especially if the pot is intended to stay indoors.

Call-back to all these steps; for real; if you use a good primer; if you apply the primer properly; if you clean the pot thoroughly before spraying it—all of these factors culminate to make a BIG difference over how successful the project will be

High Gloss Paint is Majorly Preferred in this Particular Project.  Otherwise, the pot runs the risk of falling flat and looking like a dull nursery pot all over again, yet worse= now with some weird different coloring, as if the garden company tried to stand out from the competition. With gross ill-conceived nursery pots. hahahaha!

Applying Your Paint—Same steps as the primer. Detailed directions will most likely be on the “back” of the can.

Shake your can.

Apply your coats of pain gently but firmly (if you press too gently, the can might “spit” paint (no bueno!))

***Let each coat of paint dry completely before adding another, this is a crucial step.***

Repeat the process until you are satisfied with your product.

Be careful to not let any debris, pollen, sand, etc, make contact with your wet planter.

6. The Finish—Sealer or Topcoat:

This coat typically comes in clear, no color. Instead of color choices, it varies in opacity: matte, satin, gloss, etc. Some are made to create an effect of cloudy glass. Some are made to be totally invisible and somehow blend with the sheen/shine of the object. It is available in just as many specific variations as the primer or the paint.

Think of the primer as the base.

The paint as the color/art.

And the top coat as the sealer that keeps everything together.

High-Gloss or Gloss is Highly Recommended. Its the perfect finishing touch, adding extra shine that makes the planter look brand new. Best of all, it contributes seriously to the lifespan of your project.

Use Outdoor-Grade Sealer (unless you know the planter is going to be indoors). Choose a nice, trusty, strong, anti-yellowing, clear sealer. Choose whatever level of sheen you would like. Keep in mind, High-Gloss or Gloss is recommended for this project.

Apply the sealant/topcoat to your pot according to the directions on the can. Each product varies with application instructions. It will likely be very similar to the primer and the paint.

It can be difficult to tell if/when you’ve got the whole planter covered. Try your best, and go ahead and over-apply/saturate it if you need to.

It’s often best to apply a coat in multiple sittings in between drying sessions. This way, you can lay the planter on its side and thoroughly paint, prime, or seal it. 

—Meaning, you don’t have to paint the entire pot at once

—Try spray-painting one side. Let it dry. Now you can lie the pot on its side and spray it with much more accuracy

this post is a great starting point! :) there are probably a few things missing from the supplies list i included in that post (i really gotta update that post), so here’s a more accurate one! Since you already have your betta, this post might help you out more :) more under the ‘cut’/’read more’/’keep reading’! :)

the tank you have looks like the 1 gallon cube from tetra! In a tank so small, a stable cycle is hard to keep :/ in my opinion, you’d be best off getting a 5-10 gallon tank! :) it might sound big, but i promise its not <3 PLUS more tank for your daughter to decorate and enjoy! :) AND it’ll be easier for you to keep your betta alive too! it’s a win-win-win :p why, you ask? well, it’s a win for the fish because it gets a bigger home and cleaner water. a win for your kiddo because she gets to have more fun interacting with the tank and the fish. and a win for you because it’ll be easier to keep the water clean (not clean as in clear, but clean as in waste buildup in the water that you can’t see because its in the form of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate which i will address later on)! i should also explain why smaller tanks are ‘bad’ and larger tanks are ‘good’: let’s say you have 1 betta in a 1 gallon tank and 1 betta in a 10 gallon tank. both of the bettas have the same bioload (bioload is how much waste is produced by a fish). the waste that the betta creates will accumulate much faster in the 1 gallon tank than it will in the 10 gallon tank. think of waste (fish waste is in the form of ammonia, which is toxic) building up like this: you’ve got the 1 gallon tank and 10 gallon tank. in this analogy, colored drops (like food coloring or something) will represent your fish’s waste. let’s say you put 5 drops of coloring (waste) into the 1 gallon tank and 5 drops into the 10 gallon tank. the 1 gallon will be a lot darker right? because in the 10 gallon the color will be way more diluted! same goes for waste. (this is also why ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are measure in “ppm” or parts-per-million. it’s a proportion instead of an exact measurement: like ½ (proportion) vs of .25 inches (exact measurement)) i hope that all makes sense ^-^” - water conditioner it removes chlorines (some also remove chloramines and heavy metals) from the water and makes the water safe for the fish

- filter you’ve already got a filter so that’s a great start!! the filter houses the bacteria that perform the ‘nitrogen cycle’ (the ‘cycle’ is explained later on in this post). if you use filter cartridges (your filter does), consider switching your ‘filter media’ (the stuff you put inside of any filter: pads, ceramic media, sponge, etc.) to something permanent that you don’t have to switch out (and if you do use filter cartridges you shouldn’t switch them out until they are falling apart, since removing the cartridge means removing the entire bacteria colony that turns harmful waste into something non-harmful) like sponge or ceramic media! personally, i’d switch to a sponge filter, since they’re low-flow and perfect for bettas! – How sponge filters work + how to set them up – Pros + cons of sponge filters - “Seeding” a tank - Baffling a filter - Everything I’ve learned about filters and filter media

  - heater (76-82F) i have three of these heaters and they’re great! the cords are really short tho, thats the big downside :T this post has a ton of other heater suggestions! i’d recommend getting an adjustable heater, since preset heaters can overheat and aren’t as reliable. most adjustable heaters smallest size is 50 watts. - thermometer glass ones are my personal fave, and way more accurate than the sticker kind. i think theyre 1-2$ at walmart! - 1+ hide (caves, terra cotta pots, an ornament, just a place where they can hide out or chill in) - decor (lots of decor ideas listed below! most of the suggestions are for diy stuff or things you can buy if you’re on a budget, which i totally understand) it’s a myth that bettas dont like big spaces -- they love having LOTS of space to explore, but they dont like lots of OPEN space! this is because they dont feel safe if they dont have lots of cover or places to hide...think about being alone in a big empty auditorium vs being in a museum or something. you’d feel really open an exposed in the first one but you’d probably enjoy walking around in a big museum with lots of stuff to do and less super open space :p feel free to add a ton of silk or live plants and ornament and hides! go nuts! - silk/live plants (plastic isn’t the best idea since plastic plants can tear a betta’s delicate fins) – craft mesh “betta beds” (you can buy plastic craft mesh sheets at walmart for like 1-2$ and you get a few big sheets!) – dollar store flowers (remove wire, soak to make sure they don’t bleed) - pvc, terra cotta pot, mug, glass, jar hides (your cabinet, goodwill, dollar store) – dollar store betta tanks – diy decor – craiglist, facebook marketplace, offerup, letgo, etc. BE HUNTIN FOR THEM DEALS! – anacharis is pretty cheap: one bunch at petco is 2.99. the stuff grows like CRAZY and it makes a great floating plant! it’ll send of lots of runners and in no time your fish will have a big anacharis jungle to swim in! plants also use the nutrients in fish waste to grow. since anacharis grows pretty fast, it uses up lots of waste! i have it in my 10 gallon with little led light and it went from 8″ to 24″ in 2-3 weeks…that’s crazy imo. – petco and petsmart usually have plants and supplies for sale on their website but not in the store. if you show the cashier the online price, they’ll match it at the checkout so make sure to do some online window shopping before you go! – hobby lobby and micahaels have a ton of their floral stuffs on sale right now as well! just be sure to avoid glitter and remove any metal stems, etc. in the ‘diy decor’ link above, there’s a video that shows you how to make diy silk plants! you definitely DONT have to make plant weights tho…you can usually set silk plants on the bottom of the tank no problem, and there’s nothing wrong with floating plants either~ - quality food i like new life spectrum thera +a pellets (long name, i know, but i know u can buy them at petco!) or omega one pellets or the omega one betta buffet flakes. frozen foods like blood worms and brine shrimp are also good additions to a betta’s diet :) hikari betta bio gold is an okay food (i know they sell it at walmart, so that’s why i wanted to mention it), but its got a lot of fillers. for now, whatever you have  for food will be okay :) just wanted to give you some options in case you want to change your food in the future. - test kit this kit is my favorite! the value is faaaantastic and the tests give more specific readings than the strips :p - lid bettas can be jumpers so lids are recommended. if your tank doesn’t come with a lid or is an odd shape and you can’t buy one, then craft mesh may be good option! it’s really cheap at walmart or craft stores and you can cut it with regular scissors. it’s basically plastic mesh…you can weigh it down or create a frame for it since it’s pretty light ^-^ - light if you don’t buy a kit that comes with a hood+light combo, or any light at all…you’ll probably need one! leds are a good choice :) i just bought 2 of these nicrew lights and they work amazingly! definitely bright enough for at least medium light plants and super white~ you can also buy clip-on LED with a gooseneck like this one (tho i’d be sure to check the measurements on lights as cheap as these!) or even a light from home depot~ for a tank that small, you could also use a desk lamp. with a desk lamp you could probably grow low-light plants like anacharis and anubias. when i had a little planted vase on my desk (no fish or shrimp, just aquatic plants and some rocks and wood), i just went to goodwill and got one for $3 ^-^” - water change bucket honestly just really helpful to have…if you have one bucket (or any large container, tbh) you can empty old tank water into it and then after you’ve dumped that out, you can fill it with new tank water and add conditioner to prepare the water before adding it to the tank! i got mine at walmart or home depot for less than $5 each! these also make pretty good temporary tanks or holding tanks and they’re about 5 gallons

- siphon is optional, and for smaller tanks a turkey baster works! you can also just get some airline tubing and use that…same principle! siphons usually have a plastic tub attached to small rubber hose (same thing as airline hose) and they help to drain your tank when you take old water out of it during a water change. a ‘gravel vacuum’ is also a siphon.

- water conditioner if you dont already have this, definitely buy this!! it makes tapwater safe for your fish by removing chlorine. seachem prime is my personal favorite because its a conditioner and so much more and is extremely beneficial to use when doing a fish-in cycle because it neutralizes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate so they dont harm the fish but the bacteria in your filter are still able to ‘eat’ it! seachem prime removes chlorines and chloramines and neutralizes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for 24-48 hours. you can use any water conditioner, though, so long as it removes chlorines! sometimes you’ll also see ‘betta water conditioner’ it’s just a gimmick...its the same thing but in a smaller bottle at a higher price per oz usually...just buy regular fish water conditioner :p

What’s this cycle thing?

It’s the Nitrogen Cycle!

All fish produce waste. Because all aquatic animals produce waste, they require (biological) filtration of some sort to process that waste.

Fish produce waste in the form of ammonia. Ammonia is toxic above 0ppm (parts per million). So you’ve got all this ammonia floating around in the water, right? and you’ve got water running through your filter…so these bacteria start growing all over your fish tank, wherever there’s water flow, but we want to concentrate on the bacteria that are growing in your filter media. This bacteria will be processing the waste that your fish or aquatic animal produces :)

So your fish produced some waste, and it’s floating around in the water as ammonia. The first bacteria (#1) that grows will ‘eat’ the ammonia and then ‘poop’ out nitrites.

Nitrites are also toxic to aquatic animals above 0ppm though :/ so then another bactiera (#2) grows and it ‘eats’ these nitrites that are floating around in the water and ‘poops’ out nitrates.

Nitrates are safe for fish (up to 20ppm)! :D Since there’s no bacteria that’s going to grow to eat these nitrates that are in the water, we have to physically remove them by doing a water change. A helpful post about water changes, how they work!

If you have live plants, they will use some of the ammonia, nitrite, and/or nitrates in the water as nutrients :) Some plants will use more than others, as some plants are heavy root feeders, some are floaters, and some prefer to be somewhere in the water column. (note: live plants SHOULD NOT totally replace water changes! water changes are still necessary even for planted tanks :3)

To recap, “the cycle” aka “the nitrogen cycle” goes like this: Fish waste (ammonia) -> bacteria #1 -> nitrite -> bacteria #2 -> nitrate -> water change

Okay, so how do I make “the cycle” happen? How do I “cycle” my tank?

Note: knowing where you are in the nitrogen cycle (how much ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate is in the tank / being produced) requires a test kit.

Keep your water parameters .25ppm ammonia/.25ppm nitrites/20ppm nitrates or less :) In order to do this, you’ll have to do a ton of water changes, but your fish will thank you since ammonia and nitrite are toxic to fish! Bettas are pretty hardy, and one of the only fish that you can perform a fish-in cycle with, so just be sure to keep those parameters as low as possible until your readings are 0 ammonia/0 nitrite/ x nitrates (these are the parameter readings for a cycled tank). After that, make sure your nitrates stay 20ppm or below, doing a water change whenever they reach 20ppm or higher. Also note that it’s important to continue to test ammonia and nitrite levels even if your tank is cycled, since sometimes parameters spike or a cycle crashes, and you wont know unless you’re checking for that!

Okay, but what about water changes??

You should do a water change at least 1x a week! You need to remove at least 50% of the tank’s water 2-3x a week for now (if you have the 1 gallon tank), and when you upgrade you can do it 1x a week. After you get a test kit / can monitor your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) you can figure out how much water to change and how often. You can remove the water via a cup (just scoop out the water) or a siphon (a ‘gravel vac’, tho most will be much too large for small tanks, airline tubing, a turkey baster, etc.). If you have a large container or totally clean (not used for chemicals, dirt, etc.) bucket then you can prepare your new water in that! add dechlorinator to the new water in the container, sitr well, then add it to the tank. make sure the temp matches. since you have no heater, let the water adjust to room temp (since the tank should also be room temp) by letting it sit out for a while before adding it to the tank. if you don’t have a container to make new water in, you should take out water from the tank, add dechlorinator to the tank, then add new water to the tank (preferably at room temp…as a sudden temperature fluctation can shock your betta. extreme temp shock will kind of paralyze your betta for a while so its important that the new water matches the tank temp within a few degrees). you can remove the fish if you’d like and then add him back after you’re done.

Supply Suggestions: - first off, i always recommend checking letgo, offerup, facebook marketplace, craigslist, and/or other local classifieds or ‘for sale’ sites! also check out any thrift stores like goodwill! you might find some of your equipment or decor at super low prices!! i’ve gotten all of my equipment either on sale or second hand so there’s absolutely no shame in hunting for second hand deals! - seachem prime water conditioner lasts foreeever (it’s highly concentrated so you only need a few drops per gallon! i use a pin to poke a hole in the seal of a new bottle instead of totally removing the seal so that i can count how many drops i need!) and will neutralize ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for 24-48 hours in case of any parameter level spikes! if you can’t find prime, that’s okay! most liquid water conditioners will do just as well. i know that tetra makes some “betta+ water conditioner” or whatever but you don’t need a “betta-specific” water conditioner…most things labeled “for bettas!!!” are gimmicky and unnecessary and you can use the ‘regular’ product most likely :p - a 2.5, 5, and 10 gallon tank all cost about the same price at petco or petsmart - if space is an issue, consider a 12″ bubble bowl (3-5 gallons of water, depending on how much decor is in the bowl and how full of water it is). you can find them at some walmarts in the floral section and most hobby lobbys/michaels. at hobby lobby, you can present their 40% off coupon and it’ll probably be about $10 as well. a bubble bowl will probably not work with hang-on-back filter, tho, but they usually work great with sponge filters. - sponge filter from petsmart - sponge filter from amazon - pack of sponge filters from amazon - thermometer - heater from amazon - terra cotta pot hide (craft section at walmart, $1 and no drainage hole which means your fish can’t get stuck in it! you don’t have to buy it at walmart, and it can have a drainage hole. just make sure the pot is actually terra cotta and not painted and if it has a hole, just bury the pot deeper into the substrate (gravel, sand, the stuff you’ve got on the bottom of the tank). - silk flowers from craft stores or the dollar store. hobby lobby gives a 40% off coupon and they’re always having sales on seasonal floral stuff so you could get a big bunch of silk greenery or stem(s) of silk flowers for cheap! - glassware hides (ceramic fully glazed/sealed mugs, glasses, glass bowls, glass mugs, etc.) can be found in your own kitchen or at local thrift stores, often for less than $1! if you need to disinfect something, DONT use soap, use hot water or hot water + vinegar instead! be sure to rinse extra well if using vinegar. - anacharis costs 2.99/bunch at petco. try to get the greenest looking one (sometimes the ends are or a stem or two is brown tbh but it gives new grown pretty fast!), and then prune / throw any any brown parts. if all of the edges of the leaves of a stem are brown, but the middle/stem is green, keep that stem til you see new stems branching off. when those new stems are 2+ inches, just snap them off and throw away the original stem. if the stem turns more brown and doesn’t give off new shoots, throw it away. if the stem is totally brown on one end but green on the other, cut off the brown part of the stem and keep the green. anacharis can be cut / snapped into pieces and then grow from the pieces! - craft mesh to make a lid with. i think it’s also called plastic craft canvas or something like that and you should be able to buy it at craft stores as well - you can also use craft mesh to make those betta hammocks i linked to in the ‘supplies list’s ‘decor’ section above. you cut out a strip and then tie the ends together with thread / fishing line or use zip ties. whatever you have available. - i gave lighting suggestions under the ‘supplies list’ section above

Mesa Verde National Park & Durango, Colorado

Stop #2, July 14-16

En route to Durango we stopped at a delicious pizza restaurant/brewery where we sat and enjoyed some pizza and wifi to do some research for our next week of adventures. Sean looked up why our generator wasn’t working for the A/C and I looked into an RV camp at Lake Powell that we could camp at so we could meet Sean’s aunt Jolene and her partner Bert for a fun weekend on their boat. Lake Powell is on the boarder of Utah and Arizona and reaches a high of 101 degrees in the day, so we need a place where we could run the AC since Jaxon isn’t much of a a swimmer. Paying for camping at an RV site means a full hook up with electrical, water, wifi, showers, laundry, and really everything we need. We only plan to do that kind of camping 1-2 nights a week at max, doing it less often when we stay in cooler (temperature wise) places. Anyway- I got us a spot for Friday, and we are hoping to call again on Wednesday to see if anything opens up for Saturday. In the meantime, Sean learned that our generator is actually the reason the A/C isn’t working, because it only has a 14 amp circuit breaker and we need a 20 amp. We planned on stopping in Durango to go to Walmart to grab a few things we needed, and Sean saw they had a Tractor Supply store right across the street. 

Never in my life as a New Yorker did I ever think 1- I would date a Nebraska boy. 2- We would drive around in a big red truck. 3- We would also live out of a camper trailer.. that I OWN!!! and 4- that I would shop at Walmarts and Tractor Supply stores. I have to say, while I’m still not so happy about the Walmart shopping (ever since I watched that movie about it in high school), I am loving this lifestyle!!  This is so far from how I ever imagined living my life, and I really feel like I’m seeing through a different lens. Its a lens I may have judged or labeled in my past, but a temporary part of life I am really enjoying. Not all truck drivers are Trump lovers…. 

ANYWAY- we ended up buying a new generator at the Tractor Supply store and got a good price. This is now the only thing thats putting us over our budget, but we are hoping to sell our other generator once we get to Flagstaff to help balance out.

So we headed to our camping spot in Durango in the evening which was surrounded by bushes and trees. Unlike our last stop outside of the Sand Dunes, here we have a lot more privacy and shade. It’s also a lot cooler; no desire for A/C, just open windows. I made us some homemade teriyaki sauce with plenty extra for a future meal, and made a chicken veggie stir fry with rice. Without the luxury of being lazy enough to order in any meal I want, I am really learning to cook from the fridge and the cabinets.. YAY. Its about time, really.

The next day we woke up and packed our bags for a hike or two at Mesa Verde National Park. Puppers aren’t allowed in most national parks, so we planned on hiking in the morning so we could come back to Jaxon in the trailer before it got hot. While the mornings and evenings are cool, the middle of the day is still too hot to be hanging out inside the trailer! So we left for the park to see the cliff dwellings, which you can only see if you pay for a tour. They run every half hour and cost $5 each. By the time we arrived all the morning tours were booked, and so we decided to buy tickets to the last tour (6pm) so we could spend the day with Jax, then come back to the park in the evening. And thats exactly what we did.

While we spent the day at our campsite with Jaxon we did more research on how to visit these parks when you have dogs. One option is to leave the generator running with the A/C on, but thats not safe for a lot of reasons. What if the breaker trips and the A/C goes out? Leaving the generator running while we are gone for hours is also not smart. Jaxon’s safety is our priority, but we are certainly not the only ones doing this. There must be an easy solution so that we can safely travel with Jaxon and be able to see all the sights we want in national parks where dogs aren’t allowed. So there are 2 options: 1- pay to camp at an RV sight with full hook ups so we could leave the A/C running or 2- send Jaxon to doggy day cares, which we learned are very common. They are conveniently located right outside the park :). Sean showered first and he was screaming the entire time because of how cold it was. After my shower I realized a trailer shower isn’t so bad, and it felt so great to be clean! But we did use up all the water in our tank, so we have to make sure to fill up while en route to Zion the following day.

i’m a notebook hoarder honestly. there’s a lot of notebooks in my room that are waiting to be used...i end up splurging a HUGE AMOUNT of money for notebooks and stationary compared to other more practical things. welp, i guess that’s one thing i have to work on!

so, on to the notebooks in the picture.

1. Miquelrius 

the first pink notebook is one of the Miquelrius design notebooks. This brand of notebooks is pretty well-stocked in one of the bookstores nearby, and it’s super lovely too. I can’t rly do a in-depth critique, but some notebooks of this brand have different colors on the side of the pages which is useful for dividing the notebook into sections. Notebooks have grid or ruled sheets (based on what I’ve seen, most of them are in grid). So, pretty handy if you’re looking for a quality notebook with grid pages for bullet journaling. Price is about PhP 400 ($8 ish at the current exchage rate). Generally expensive for a notebook, but relatively cheaper compared to other brands of the same level more or less.

also the notebook was originally plain, I wrote the text using a gold paint marker (it says “summer daydreams in your eyes”)

2. Decomposition Notebook

I went on a family vacation in america recently and this is one of the many souvenirs i got! this is from the monterey bay aquarium. the design is really cute annnnnd neato. it’s different from the usual composition notebooks here in the PH.

3. go your own way

another notebook i bought from america! this particular notebook was from the stationary section at marshalls. i checked the brand and it’s fringe. i like this one since the design is pretty (gold spiral spine. neato!) it has 192 pages and the size of the lines is enough for my small handwriting. bc of that, i think this one will last for a while if i decide on using it this coming schoolyear. i bought this one for $6 (originally $9)

4. chuvaness notebook 

so this notebook has been used but its just littered with a few doodles from meetings. its smaller than the notebooks i usually go for, but listen, the notebook is divided into three sections: dotted sheets, ruled sheets, and grid sheets. its amazinggggg!!! there’s also a plastic divider the separates them. i bought this one for PHP 400. useful if you need a multipurpose notebook or one that has dotted, grid, and ruled for your needs. if not, i suggest buying a notebook purely of the same type of paper since, for me, its a little expensive for a notebook of its size.

5. jotter book by the paper stone

ah yes, paper stones. home of some of the cutest but also costly notebooks. this one was part of a set of 4 notebooks which was a gift from my cousin. i used 2 of them for class lectures and they’re pretty alright. i also had a notebook from paper stones the same size as the chuvaness notebook i have. i bought it during a buy 2 for PHP 1000 sale (thats roughly $20). i like their notebooks bc of their unique designs. according to them, each design only runs for a limited amount of time (until supplies last, i think) so each design you buy is one of a kind.

6. starbucks planner

last one for this post: my starbucks planner! aka the reason why im neck deep in caffeine. the 2017 starbucks planner comes in two designs: here’s a picture. along with the planner, there’s also a free case, pen and magnetic bookmark. this planner has been my companion since january, battling deadlines and fending off schedule chaos. helped me in setting my priorities straight. it’s a real blessing i tell u

like any other planner, it comes with a calendar of the current and next year, a monthly spread, a weekly spread, and extra space for notes. ALSO COUPONS WOO!! 

im super in love with the illustrations inside. its full of watercolor paintings and doodles. so pretty and NEATO. its worth going to starbucks and dragging my whole family with me just to gain more stickers (we managed to get two planners this yr: one is my sister’s. just imagine the amount of calories we drank. omg) 

i like this planner, but im also looking at buying daycraft planners since they also have a daily spread. maybe i’ll find a way to include it in my current planner though to save cash.

The old owners left everything in this car And i do mean everything... We found a Cellphone, mp3 player, weed whacker plastic wire, fuses for my car, light bulbs for my car, unused condoms (thank god they were new and unused) 3 or 4 lighters, a lot of windshield wiper fluid, cassette tapes, old cigerette butts everywhere (disgusting), trash galore (ew) and multiple earrings however there was only one of each... Me and my hubby are working on the car ourselves since he's a certified mechanic and I help when i can. This car is not a walk in the park and has been really testinf our patience. It's literally one problem after another but thats to be expected on a $400 car. $400 is junkyard prices in my area. That's how much they pay to scrap your car. My buick riviera is very salvageable and because it does run. It was well worth the value i paid. My car came with loads of receipts for parts from previous owner repairs (which definitely comes in handy!). However, those repairs were not done professionally. That's why this car has so many problems. One of the old owners was probably overly confident and thought he knew what he was doing but he didn't.. And thats why the riviera is my hassle now... Take your cars to professionals with certification people... So far we've found my car needs these repairs: 1. My throttle body needs to be cleaned out. 2. All new tires. 3. New battery. 4. New reverse switch. (My reverse lights are on in every and any gear position) 5. Wiring harnesses for both door windows. (Replaced the motors, still no power, old wiring harnesses snapped due to old age, and opening and closing the doors) 6. We need to install my new radio antenna. (Already bought it, just gotta install it.) 7. Need to adhere down one of my side markers. I *cough* threw a tennis ball and knocked it off while playing with my dog. Don't tell... 8. Adhere down my tag light. ( I didnt break that one. I swear. It was like that when i bought the car.) 9. Fuel gauge floater thing... Yeah idk the technical name for that. (The dumbasses replaced the fuel pump in 2011... However the fuel gauge floater thing doesnt work due to improper installation... Unprofessional repairs are fucking pointless. Do it right or dont do it! My car reads that it has a quarter tank... All the time... We couldn't start the car at all for awhile because i didn't know it ran out of gas... We diagnosed everything and couldn't figure it out. It was so frustrating! I got so mad that I finally got a random idea. I mean i was beyond pissed. I was like "FUCK THIS PIECE OF SHIT RUST BUCKET. NOTHING FUCKING WORKS. I DONT KNOW WHY I FUCKING HOPE IT WILL. I FUCKING HATE THIS CAR I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT." and after my child-like tantrum... It popped in my head. The idea. "Nothing works right on this car." and i said to my hubby. Nothing works right on this car... How much you wanna bet the gas gauge floater is broken... We had a spirited debate about it he brought up what it could be what needs to be done and that we have to do all of that and it will start again. But i got a boot up my ass about the gas gauge floater and i raised hell trying to convince him it could be something so small and dumb as that and i really wanted to go get gas and do my process of elimination. He was upset..he felt i was insulting his intelligence about cars but gave in to my idea anyways since we were stumped.. We went and got gas Jump-started my riviera with his car and voila. The fucking riviera started running again. We were absolutely mindblown... The old owners replaced the fuel pump.... But installed it incorrectly so my gas gauge is incorrect and says it has a quarter of a tank. Which now i know my gas gauge doesn't mean shit and its just another thing put on the repair list lol. Take my word for it... Don't buy a $400 car to work on if your relationship isn't strong. Trust me. There will be fights. Mean words will be said. Wrench's might even get thrown. Feelings will definitely get hurt over the stupidest shit as I've demonstrated. However, if your like me and want to try saving a junkyard bound riviera and give it a few more years on the road... I definitely recommend it. This car is great! It has high end features that $50,000 newer cars have and my riviera will be great again at least for a little while once its fixed up until i run it into the ground absolutely dead. Which i will. I want to get every mile i can out of this car. I will baby the shit out of it to get every last mile out of my motor and transmission. I will drive it like a damn grandma and take it out on only sundays before i even consider junking this car. Some people go out and take out loans on newer cars. Some people buy older beaters and abuse them, run them into the ground dont fix anything and junk em. I'm one of those people who willingly buy a junkyard bound car to save it and make it road worthy again to keep good cars out of the junkyard!!! Reduce reuse repair recycle.
