Dutch State Visit to Belgium - Day 3

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima arrive in Antwerp accompanied by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. June 22, 2023.

Later, at the last day of the Dutch State Visit to Belgium, they visit the renovated Royal Museum of Fine Arts and Havenhuis Port.

Antwerp - 4: Areas of the city to visit for culture / architecture etc

Antwerp is a major port and diamond trading centre. Dutch / Flemish is the main language used. The city also has a reputation for fashion.

A post by Visit Antwerpen suggests six museums and monuments that can be visited free of charge for views and architectural interest:

Het Steen guarded by the statue of Lange Wappe (near the free ferry);

Escalators with views all the way up to the roof terrace at MAS - Museum Aan de Stroom (south of docks area); Red Star Line Museum observation tower (north of MAS); Port House (Havenhuis in the docks area); Stock Exchange (Handelsbeurs - Sat & Sun) and Antwerpen-Centraal station.

Other free places of interest to visit are: the pedestrian tunnel and free ferry that link Antwerp to it's left bank - Linkeroever;

the Botanical Garden / Plantentuin; the weekend market at Theaterplein and other markets; the Wilde Zee pedestrian shopping area with the small statue Den Deugniet; Zurenborg neighbourhood which includes Cogels-Osylei street with impressive buildings in art nouveau and other styles and Dageraadplaats with several bars; Beguinage / Begijnhof - a quiet backwater although less impressive than the one in Leuven; Pedestrian shopping streets and quiet streets with interestings shops for antiques, records, art etc - follow Hoogstraat to Oever and Kloosterstraat; Street art is everywhere!

Tickets are needed for the following visits: the Cathedral (12 euros / 10 euros 60+); KMSKA - The Royal Museum of Fine Arts (20 euros); M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art (14 euros / 8 euros 65+ NB entrance to ground floor and roof terrace cafe is free); FOMU - Photography museum (12 euros NB entrance to cafe is free).

In mijn beeld laat ik mijn gebouw voet aan grond krijgen door de moderne vormgeving samen te binden met enkele omliggende elementen zoals de londenbrug en het havenhuis. Deze werken op hun beurt samen met de jacht’s en zo met de scheepsvaart.... Er ontstaat een geheel dat een sfeer creeerd waarbinnen mijn ontwerp kan bestaan. 

In een onrealistische wijze worden er ook elementen getoond die er in het echt niet zouden zijn maar enkel dienen als de gevisualiseerde historische aanwezigheid.

De haven van antwerpen toond ook een andere kant door de chaos en het vuilnis dat het met zich meesleept. Ook al is het gebouw tamelijk proper heb ik deze op zo een manier geschillerd dat ze toch opgaat in deze sfeer.

Port of Antwerp, the cool part 🚢

1. 'Stormkop' by Maud Vanhauwaer. The letters of the poem turn with the wind.

2. Port House of Antwerp (the diamond capital of the world). Architect Zaha Hadid did a marvelous job.

4. View over the city center as seen from the brand new Droogdokkenpark.

The Port Authority Building (#Havenhuis), or the #Port House, is a government building located in #Antwerp, #Belgium, built between 2009 and 2016. It is located near the area of #Eilandje, in the Port of Antwerp, and acts as the new headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority, housing various departments. Designed by Iraqi-British architect #ZahaHadid, the building opened in 2016, the year of her death. It is the sole government building designed by #Hadid. The design of the building incorporates the use of a fire station, integrating it into the building.
