@0mpcost - Well I don’t even think Hazanko was an organic being anyway. Hamushi’s flesh could be seen being torn into the caster shot where as Hazanko was like “Oh, I’ll go in hands first, not getting blood on this shit. This is expensive.”
Hazanko was human, underneath his mask was a face which we get to see twice and his digital/spiritual showed his real form without his mask/armor which was a human body. He was clearly massively warped by his relationship to Tao magic, which was a theme with others in the Anten Seven as well. They were super powerful but for whatever reason, misuse or IMO simply Tao magic’s effects on them as individuals changed them physically/psychologically in fucked up ways but at some point they all started out human. The only one that didn’t seem to be affected physically by her usage of Tao magic was Hamushi but her face is partially covered and of course we never get to see Hitoriga’s real face since he can literally perfectly mimic another person’s face (putting Tobigiera’s defining ability to shame).
Leilong and Hanmyo were not Tao users, their inclusion in the Anten Seven was simply based on their natural skills. Same with Tobigiera, but then again his face was obscured by the mask and its never made clear whether his chameleon abilities are derived from Tao magic or just good makeup skillz.
What I think happened though is that Hazanko was in fact heavily damaged by the black hole though this is not seen on screen. Like, I’m sure as a Tao master he has full knowledge of every single caster shell including the No.4. He likely either devised a countermeasure against its effects or was already aware of one existing which he mastered at some point and then employed in the moment to survive its effects. Even if casters have gone out of style by the time the show takes place they were widely used before and somebody like Hazanko would not reach his status as Tao master without being fully aware of the most powerful forms of magic in the galaxy including a caster shell that can create a black hole.
Two examples: Hamushi herself recognized Gene was using a caster and commented on the fact that that type of magic would not affect her and she was right. Except for the fact that she probably assumed Gene would not have in his possession an ultra-rare No.4 shell much less 2 or perhaps doubted their existence all together. Even Ron McDougal for example, who also uses a caster, comments on Gene saying he had a No.9 shell by saying “I didn’t know those were even real” seconds before he experiences its effects. Hamushi would know about casters because she’s a Tao master and Ron because he uses one himself. Hazanko outranking both of them would not only have much more in depth understanding of a No.4 shell and its effects but likely has already prepared a defense which is why he managed to survive.
To drive that home again I think its very likely the reason Hazanko survived, even though we’re never explicitly told this, is because he didn’t make the mistake Hamushi and Ron made in assuming his power was above casters or that even the rarest most legandary spell shells did not exist. He survived but he did not come out of the experience unscathed. Still one hell of a display of power for both Urt’s shell and Hazanko’s Tao magic.
If you’re watching the show and not reading into the deeper themes that are constantly being explored then well, he was just powerful or whatever. But I really really thought A LOT into these themes and the logical implications they made so of course he didn’t simply survive cuz its a too simple way of killing off the main antagonist and that would be too easy and anticlimactic. There’s much more there for those willing to look.
Furthermore, there’s also the spiritual representation of every character we get to see within the Leyline which is presented using digital imagery. All of them have an aura, which represents their essence (Melfina’s is pink, Gene’s is red, Harry’s is blue and Hazanko is dark blue) and a physical rendering which represents the ethereal constitution their inner like, form of their consciousness or spirt/soul, however you want to see it. In his spiritual form within the Leyline you see that Hazanko’s midsection is missing and in the center a small orb of matter is floating which I take to mean he was definitely affected by the black hole in this spiritual form but in his physical form if he was also affected the damage is obscured by his armor.
All of these concepts might be many allusions here to the writers using concepts Taoism concerns itself with, which would, of course, completely fly over my head because I have very cursory knowledge of Taoism. I think they’re there though, I think this is how the creators of the show are presenting what it means for people to live in a world where these concepts are, in fact, material. Even a leyline is itself a Taoist concept, which I learned a while back, a place where energy lines converge and on the place and thus very powerful and meaningful in ways I didn’t really understand. Again, only cursory understanding here but still this shit is FASCINATING and were it now for the show I would have never explored these ideas in this manner. SUCH A GOOD SHOW!
