Team Star's Bullying: Reimagined

So I finished SV and while I LOVE Team Star, their backstories were lacking IMO. Bullying playing a huge role in how they became friends was a great idea, because it’s so relatable! But the game’s reasons for them being targeted basically amounted to “they were bullied because THEY WERE TOO COOL 😎” which was hard to take seriously...

SO I wrote my own ideas for why each Team Star member was targeted at the academy! Enjoy-

Canonically, Mela was bullied for…being too cute? I’ll expand on that. 

Mela is a very pretty girl, even without any makeup. Her natural beauty and (at the time) soft demeanor caught the negative attention of a clique of girls, and they pretended to be her friends. 

Mela eventually told them that she was actually bisexual (having a preference for girls), thinking she was in safe company. The clique IMMEDIATELY spread this private info around in a negative light, claiming that Mela pushed herself on one of the girls. Mela got in trouble and she felt complete betrayal and heartbreak over the actions of her so-called “friends”, who had just wanted dirt on her. 

The bullying and gossip that resulted from this situation caused Mela to completely close down, steel her heart, and keep others at arms-length with fiery threats and emotional glares. She underwent a complete transformation in order to protect herself from being hurt again.

Giacomo actually used to be somewhat of a bully himself, in an attempt to fit in with the other students. He would taunt and goad others to impress his shitty ex-friends. 

He ended up becoming the scapegoat when one of the bullying victims had a breakdown, and all of his friends pinned the blame on him when the teachers interrogated them. After this, he was quickly shunned at the academy and was surrounded by rumors and gossip. 

Experiencing the effects of bullying firsthand made Giacomo realize what an asshole he'd been, and that his old 'friends' weren't so cool after all. He still feels immense guilt for the things he did in the past, and works to make up for it by being overly protective of Team Star. 

Seriously, he will NOT hesitate to throw fists. He will beat someone up in a denny's parking lot just for them.

Ortega is, obviously, on the feminine side and very short. (which is apparently a huge deal for men…) He quickly became a target for being "girly", short, not masculine enough, and rumors that he was gay spread like wildfire. Ortega's love of fancy outfits only added fuel to the fire. 

This made him extremely self-conscious about his identity and his appearance, and caused him to develop a short temper around others. Despite his fuse and tendency to lash out verbally, Ortega doesn’t actually like initiating physical fights; they make him anxious and scared from past experiences. He relies on his silver tongue to shut down jerks.

Ortega often bottles up his emotions and puts on a smug facade, because he believes he has no right to complain or feel upset, considering his wealthy upbringing. While Ortega still has a bratty attitude with the rest of Team Star, he's much softer around them and cares about them….though he’s too embarrassed to admit it.

Eri's bullying involved her body. Society is incredibly harsh on girls who don't fit the "mold", so to speak. Girls are expected to be short, soft and skinny, otherwise you're immediately outcast. Eri, being big-boned and much taller and more muscular than most girls, was the target of many vulgar and gross comments.

Eri, despite what others thought, DID take these insults to heart. She had always been a caring, motherly person, and was sad to see that this is what others thought of her behind her back. She dealt with these feelings through Pokemon battling and training herself until she was too tired to think.

Despite her intimidating aura/stature, Eri does not like to participate in violence unless absolutely necessary. She knows her own strength, and doesn’t like hurting others. She will not be taunted into a fistfight by some random student, as she KNOWS they’re goading her. However, if someone lays a hand on one of her friends, she will not hesitate to fling them into a wall.

Atticus was always an odd person who stood out. His interests were unique, even as a child. Being neurodivergent, the way he expressed himself and communicated was different. Having a love for art and fashion, Atticus was drawn to the more unique and unsettling themes in the industry. He loved to wear makeup considered "creepy" and wear outlandish, fantasy-like outfits. 

He was immediately known as "the weirdo/freak" and was avoided, amongst rumors that he acted creepy towards other students and claims that he followed people around like a stalker. None of which was true, but still resulted in Atticus being alone. He didn't particularly mind…really.

Much like Ortega, Atticus dislikes physical fights. He knows his limits and capabilities. Why bother punching someone when you could recite poems on how pathetic and slimy they are? Or point out how ugly their haircut is?

❤️ However legally dubious it was to be physical with one's pokemon, it didn't stop him. Having himself a bratty Raichu, a mischievous Zoroark, a daddy's girl Sylveon, a mature Arcanine, a moody Absol, and a needy Lopunny. Occasionally bringing one of his girls out to help him masturbate with, and let her lounge around the house with. When he first fucked one of his girls he basically gave up battling for the more taboo training of indulging in lust.

Waking from a nap, and seeing his stiffy pushing up at the sheets, he sleepily reached for any pokeballs sitting on his nightstand. Normally his girls would be out, but he forgot about at least one and lazily sought to toss it and let her out. He'd wordlessly part the comforter, showing her the tent pitched at his underwear and motioning the girl to climb into bed for some morning fun.

His Sylveon came out of the ball as he tossed it, letting her stand by the bed and seeing his blanked coming off and the pitched tent was all she needed to come closer to climb in bed with her daddy. Pulling his underwear down and letting his cock spring free, only to be taken into her mouth to suck him off gently.

oh yes! they're not my favorite characters without headcanons and self projection after all :,D

for steven, i've made a few posts dedicated to just steven hcs! can't remember what that tag was (just "headcanons" maybe?) but all you need to know is that my absolute favorite ride or die steven headcanon is that he's half galarian on his mother's side. don't know where the thought came from either, i just thought british steven was cute or something. i've got way more on those dedicated posts (i think like... 55-ish hcs?) so i won't ramble here much longer unless i want this post to become Ungodly long (it probably will)

i briefly mentioned this in my silly wip pile post, but the one thing i will yell into the quite frankly empty void of juan's tag is that GNC JUAN OR BUST! i know people use that term for a bunch of different stuff so i like to use gnc for him in terms of breaking gender roles and not really anything to do with the character himself if that makes sense? like. he's a contest star or something, i think he would like to look pretty no matter how 🥺 put the cute little man in a cute little dress! (bonus points for wallace "YAS BITCH SLAY" moments lol. also not sure where to put this but i think he/they juan would also be kinda cute heehee). if he's from the pokemon version of greece, he's super into cats as well and probably has like 5 skitty he picked up from the side of the road and it's wallace who needs to physically restrain him from the 6th because "you don't need it yoU HAVE ENOUGH CATS" and THEN on that note i'm a chad and believe that juan adopted wallace as his son because this is such a sweet headcanon GUYS GET ON THIS

clair and lance i think come as a package deal because it's either 1) i like to think that at some point before lance became champion HE was the one taking care of clair (for some reason. parents busy? idk) which makes their relationship lean closer to siblings or 2) fuck canon, they are straight up siblings. i have accidentally called them siblings to some friends so at this point i'm going all in on my mistakes and i also..... kinda hate how their relationship is presented in canon so fuck that it's (canon) morbin' time. but a bit for each character individually: you have seen this in most my lance posts, he has heterochromia because it's badass and is also pokemon's gay icon and is kissing my oc. clair would just roll her eyes and go "oh geez really" whenever this happens. she's basically the kid who thinks everything love-related is gross and sappy. also you know how most teenagers need to get approval of their partner from their parents? lance needs to go through his bratty little relative. anyway, lance. he's a mess in super social situations (at the end of hgss he says being around TWO people is too noisy for him or something at the hall of fame?), a hopeless coffee addict, and he's a closet contest fan and has had crushes on like Way too many cute male coordinators (legal adult male coordinators ofc). and for clair herself.... i wanna think she's really good at swimming because hanging out with the dratini and dragonair at the dragon's den is her favorite way to calm down and chill out, and she has also fallen to the same fate of buying identical capes at the goldenrod department store

with falkner, pokemon masters has made me realize the brilliance of narcoleptic falkner because he talks about being tired and falling asleep a few times in his pokemon center dialogue! also on that note, he says he wants to go to galar just to take the corviknight taxis, so maybe he's a fan of travelling around? he'd love going to different regions and observing bird pokemon he's never seen before! he is also pathetically short i wanna punt him into orbit lovingly

“Rei is being annoying he has the easiest time out of all of them” okay so if you found out that everyone you loved was dead and you were surrounded by things that your instincts screamed at you were dangerous and you didn’t know if you’d ever see your home again, you would be totally okay and not mad and never lash out or be moody?

Rei is a kid. He may be considered an adult in Hisui, but the part of the brain that controls logical thinking and impulse control isn’t done developing until late twenties early thirties. So he’s going to snap. He’s going to get frustrated, and upset. You know why teenagers are seen as full of additude and bratty? Yeah that’s because they literally process things differently than adults?

You’re doing a great job writing Rei. His reactions to his situation are perfectly reasonable and that Anon complaining about it rubbed me the wrong way. Kids Aren’t Logical. Humans aren’t logical. Especially not when they’re in traumatic situations. And I think being yanked 200 years in the future would be very traumatic. Even the people who make all their decisions based on their logical process, they’re still prone to bias.

And Rei is 15. The teenage years are when hormones and mood are the most wild and uncontrollable???

First, I would like to say that I really hope people don't argue too much over Rei! It's okay to have different opinions!

But also like, yes, exactly, people react differently to stressful and traumatic situations! And like, who knows, somebody might just call him out on it eventually! But like, he's only been in Sinnoh for a few days, he's still kind of getting a feel for the place, for the rules, for what to expect. To me, Rei sees himself often as not being good enough, and he has this kind of irrational fear right now that if he doesn't seem good enough or devoted enough or adult enough, these people aren't going to help him, and they talked about pokemon he'd never even heard of in distant regions he has no way to get to on his own, and it's scary!

And, well, Dawn lied to him about who she was. Maybe the futre is full of liars.

(Gary anon) And the thing is, he's a not a generic bratty kid [like some tend to only see]. He's trying to drill things into Ash's mind in a way he know will stick because he knows how the kid works. (While also trying to push his own limits) Confession blogs can either be very fun or an harrowing experience, no in-between. (Professor Oak reassures him that he'll ALWAYS be proud of his grandson and support him in what he does. Does make you wonder how Oak feels about only)

(Part 2) ([physically] seeing Gary a few times a year, cause he never seems to stay long when he visits) Mhm, I believe it stated that Delia used to be a student of his. (*nods* I can understand that. It's easier to fly under the radar in urban areas; unless your face gets plastered on the local news) Oh, no doubt the fans will have a field day with this. (Yeah, I gonna hold out until we get the whole story, but I do wonder if the stuff said in the magazines last year will eventually show up)

(Part 3) More big brother Gary moments, "jealous of Ash's comfy lifestyle but is happy he hasn't changed", etc. (That's fair. I think Gary would want to redeem himself, but I think he knows when to stand down. He very easily could have continued that fight, though that could mean him and Pokemon being tired and injured. Even if he managed to cause a dent; he certainly wouldn't have recovered quick enough for the final fight) You might get your wish, depending on what Wallace

(Part 4) and Lisia is here for. (At best, we could see another genuine smile out of him. But for the most part, I expect Paul to be stoic as always, just less stuffy) Brought this up months ago, but depending on if Brandon gets mentioned [or even shows up] could be a huge factor on how Paul's return will be handled. Word on that will make the eventual loss against Ash easier to swallow for some people cause he'd at least have closure. (In Gary's case, his story is not finished)

(Part 5) I think he dodged a bullet not being in the PWC. (Well, technically a few others aren't either, but I think most already hit their main story peak and likely won't be as involved anymore) Like Iris, I speculated that if she was ever brought back for PWC again, she'll probably be battle fodder. But not for Ash; I don't expect any more rematches at this point.

(Part 6) (Well, it seems we have a break on the 25th, but the April episodes are being kept secretive. So maybe that means something. I expect rapid-fire returns from this point onward) A Team Rocket Radio show is coming up too.

(Part 6 extended re-send) (Okay, I've seen the preview: Not much shown other than Goh being discouraged about his next mission and Ash trying to pump him up, them being attacked by Geodude [gonna guess this will be another rescue scene], Gary seemingly taking leadership on this mission, messing with Goh again and Ash reacting the same as last time, Tokio and Gary shake hands, Bayleef and Articuno appearing. Oh, and another Gary promo on Twitter: Blastoise, Umbreon and Arcanine plushies!)

Absolutely, he's got a lot of Hidden Depths and there's generally way more to his character than some people give him credit for. And while a lot of his antagonizing Ash in the early days might've just been petty antagonism, at some point it did seem to become pushing his rival to keep getting better. He's clever, and knows Ash well because they grew up together--well enough to know exactly how to light a fire in him.

For sure. People will say some wild stuff when given the platform and anonymity, and sometimes it's very entertaining and other times... you can see why they didn't want to say it off anon.

Yeah, he clearly loves his grandson so much. That must be rough, seeing him in person so rarely and so briefly. It must be so hard raising a kid in the Pokemon world--knowing how few years you might have before your baby leaves to travel so far, so young, and they might get so caught up in their travels they rarely remember to call or come home... man. No wonder Delia was about to cry when she was seeing Ash off at the start of his journey, I would too.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was mentioned in M03! Love it. I know some people have Other Thoughts on what their relationship is, but I just think their friendship is very good.

Yep, it's a wild difference. The differences between living in such a tiny town versus a big city or even just a larger town are so much all around. City life is very much not for me, but I do see the appeal of being able to blend in so easily.

I wonder if we'll actually see an OT4 get a little traction in this fandom. I don't know if I've ever seen that happen but it'd be fun.

Oh man, I really hope we do get to see that stuff because it sounded so good.

True. Seems like the Viridian Gym Incident taught him something--maybe he would've been able to keep fighting at Lake Valor, but he must've figured out he was in over his head and stopped to prevent a repeat of what happened back then. For all his stubbornness and pride, I doubt he'd ever want to see his Pokemon in that kind of danger again.

I guess we'll see! Very excited at the possibility. I feel like it's very possible we'll see the Wallace Cup happen again, and Ash and friends will join in like in DP. Would probably see Dawn there and maybe some other past coordinators (though I still don't expect to see May, for reasons we've talked about before) but I guess we'll find out.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I've seen my friends who care about Paul wondering if we'll hear he's finally beaten Brandon.

Yeah, Gary's still got a ways to go. Love to see it, it feels so special to see Ash's first rival still progressing on his own path too, pursuing his own lofty goal. I'm really glad his role ended up being completely unrelated to PWC stuff, this suits him so much better.

Yeah, feels less likely to see much of, say, Korrina again. I'm not 100% sure I remember what returns there've been (you may have noticed from the way I tend to repeat myself sometimes, I have memory issues)... there was Korrina early on, the Alola gang (+ Kukui and Burnet, with their baby Lei), Iris, Gary, Dawn, Brock, and Botch and Cassidy? I think that's all of them?

Ooh, I never thought about potentially seeing some of those past PWC opponents battling each other, or maybe some future characters we'll also see in the PWC. Hm.

Interesting! Very intrigued to see what the future holds.

Oh, I need to see that. After I post this I'm going to go take a look.
