Iirc the great solution was about finding a way to ascend animals and the world as a whole; Five Pebbles calls himself a gift in his monologue to Survivor !

I think you could compare it to the ashy green pearl dialog where even the ancients call him that...

The ancients didn't make Iterators to ascend them in particular, but to ascend the world as a whole, something that a) both ancient and iterators assume is what everything wants (Pebbles doesn't really know what Survivor and Monk want, he just assumes they want to ascend when these scugs are just looking for a way home to their family) and b) they concluded solving that "big problem" was impossible and not applicable after the ancients left, hence why a lot redirected their efforts to finding a way to ascend themselves and other iterators. And then...

"Sliver of Straw sent [the Triple Affirmative] and the ensuing commotion was historically unparalleled, before or after. I still remember it. But... nothing happened - except that Sliver of Straw was apparently dead."

I also find that detail interesting; it was a surprise to Moon that upon discovering the solution, nothing but SoS dying happened. So even if these computers titans find a solution, nothing says they can enact it for everyone...

I find it dark but fascinating how both ancients and iterators assuming everything wants to ascend like they do is what led them to this, a world destroyed by torrential rains littered with the corpses of gods thrown away eons ago.

It's hard to believe at least for me that the first ever iterators were built as a gift to the world alone! They later imo become this. It's absolutely correct they are given to the world to help it, because it’s unintelligent and must be saved by the gods they made!

But we KNOW that:

1. The solution to their greatest dilemma, ascension was a very very hard one. Yet to achieve it you must be effortless. Moon thinks this is what they were there for. To perhaps remove those burdens.

2. Although the solution without too much work became real, aka the void fuid. It was considered risky! There were horror stories about becoming an echo (not specifically named here, but it's very clear what the text refers to).

So! Iterators came about later on! To solve this dilemma and offer and easy and safe, applicable to anyone solution.

Which they fail to do. Except SOS like you mentioned, who did not survive to share.

Ngl getting to pebbles through memory cryots and underhang as riv was SO fucking good. Like, when you first enter mc and there's rot?? Yellow lizards?? Entire structures that have fallen down???? It becomes ckear so quickly that something's very very wrong. The build up through all the way is so good

  it was clear to everypony that the queen was .. not herself.

  the ashes of battle clung to her pure white coat, but the burning fire was still blazing in her eyes- which were ... changing. instead of its normal calm lilac purple, it was shifting, turning almost red.    of course, it could be the trick of the light, with the fire dancing around them ... but something deep down, everyone who saw her knew there was something wrong.

  celestia bore a wicked grin, the adrenaline still rushing through her veins. she could feel the blood inside her boiling, and she craved more. her suggestion to hunt down the rest of the stragglers seemed to have caused some hesitation however. even her own sister didn’t seem eager to jump on the opportunity.

  she scowled, a strange voice leaving the once serene alicorn- her voice dripping with malice and hot iron.

“  Those who go against me shall be justly punished, should they not? You’d rather the rest run free and go back to infest our kingdom in its hidden corners??  ”  darkening eyes looked around, glowering at each creature,  “  Cowards. I’m especially disappointed in you, little sister.  ”

  the way she spoke that word was like a hiss, as if mocking her. a golden glow blazed on her spiraling horn as her wings flashed open, tossing aside the smoke that surrounded her.

“  No matter. I shall deal with this myself, since none of you have the spine to do what needs to be done.  ”

  the implication of her words left but one conclusion, and it was chilling.
