📑 | This is the girl from Ipanema. Helô Pinheiro, Tom Jobin and Vinícius de Moraes’ muse. She made history by inspiring the song Garota de Ipanema. The composers, Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, always saw her from the Veloso’s bar and cafe, when she was on her way to the beach, and were enchanted by her, creating one of the most iconic songs in the country, which presented Rio de Janeiro and bossa nova, a 100% Brazilian rhythm, to the whole world. A global hit, it is one of the most recorded songs of all time and has been sung by great stars, such as Frank Sinatra.
“Rio de Janeiro, the “marvelous city”, where the Cariocas turn lemons into lemonade, the song into a serenade, the women into inspiration, and life into a big passion.” - Helo.

Gilfriend & Muse
Anamaria Teixeira de Carvalho [15.09.47]
Anamaria de Carvalho was born in 1947 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father, Luiz de Carvalho, was a famous radio host. Anamaria (or Aninha, as her friends affectionally refer to her) grew up surrounded by artists. In the 1960s, bossa nova became a popular music genre in Brazil, and soon recognized in North America and Europe. One of its most iconic songs, “Garota de Ipanema” (in English, “The Girl from Ipanema”) was written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes in 1962; the English version was recorded by Frank Sinatra, among others. The lyrics were inspired by another muse, Helô Pinheiro, but many people agree that it was also inspired by different girls who frequented the Ipanema beach at that time, one of them being Anamaria. She used to draw people’s attention with her long dark hair and her tanned body wearing a bikini.
At age 17, Anamaria married musician Marcos Valle. He was invited to join the group Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66, which was gaining recognition in the United States. The couple immediately moved to California, and Anamaria also joined the group. They were married from 1964 to 1969. In the sixties and seventies, Anamaria recorded several songs with her husband and then solo. She sang bossa nova, tropicalia and psychedelic rock, performing live with other artists. Always a free spirit, Anamaria also lived in England and Mexico. She returned to the United States a couple of times, living in San Francisco and New York City. Back in Brazil, she lived in Bahia but returned to her hometown of Rio de Janeiro.
According to popular belief, Anamaria experienced with a lot of drugs (particularly acid) during her hippie days as young woman, and eventually slipped out of reality. She denies being mentally ill, but agrees that her lifestyle is eccentric; she rambles a lot, switching from Portuguese to English to French, and even though she has an apartment in Ipanema, Anamaria prefers to wander through the beach, which causes people to think that she is homeless since she is always carrying a shopping cart full of her belongings. Her friends also deny that she is ill, but rather a very unique woman.
Nowadays, Anamaria is known through Rio as “The Woman in White from Ipanema.” That is because she is always wearing white clothes, white shoes and carrying white flowers. She is a popular character who is always dancing, smiling and chatting with people. Anamaria often says that she lives “in the cosmos” and only spends a certain amount of time on Earth. A short film about her life, Anamaria – A Mulher de Branco de Ipanema, was directed by journalist Chico Canindé in 2013. It features exclusive pictures, interviews with friends and acquaintances, and with Anamaria herself.
“My life’s got to have sun and music. I’ve always asked the divine for my life to be a happy musical.”
“Marcos Valle came suddently into my life. Then he played me a song and stared at me. I had very beautiful legs at that time. And he was very jealous, but he couldn’t be because he also had a lot of girlfriends.”
“Anamaria was a woman way ahead of her time. She walked through Ipanema in a bikini, without a tunic, during a time when no one did that. She had no shame.” –Zezé Mota
“Anamaria was the muse of many summers in Ipanema, always displaying her beautiful body on the way from her house to the beach, where she enjoyed places like the Ipanema Pier. The daughter of radio host Luiz de Carvalho, she was born and raised in an artistic environment. She participated in the most important artistic manifestations of Rio in the 60s and 70s. In the seventies, back in Brazil, she lived for some time in Arambepe, Bahia. To this day she still walks and dances by the sea. She lives in Ipanema, but prefers to mentally navigate through the cosmos.” –Chico Canindé
