Maria Catharina Wiik (3 Aug 1853 – 19 Jun 1928) was a Finnish painter.

She worked principally with still life, genre images, landscape paintings and portraits.

Encouraged by her family, she studied art during 1874–1875 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. In 1875, she continued her art studies in Paris at the #AcadémieJulian, one of the few private schools accepting women at the time.

From 1875 and in 1880 she became a substitute teacher at the #AcademyofFineArtsofHelsinki. Her early paintings accepted for the #ParisSalon in 1880 were portraits. In 1881, she painted a series of small paintings with a more psychological atmosphere including minute details. In spring 1889, she returned to Paris with her friend, the painter #HeleneSchjerfbeck.

In 1883–1884, they painted in England and then in 1889 at St Ives in Cornwall.

Her painting Out into the World won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900) and was included in the 1905 book Women Painters of the World by Walter Shaw Sparrow.

Her last trip to Paris took place in 1905. The rest of her life she spent in Helsinki. Her vision deteriorated, and in 1925 she underwent an eye surgery. Wiik died in Helsinki in 1928. Via #Wikipedia

Helene Schjerfbeck In the seaside town of Ekenäs, south-west of Helsinki, there is a name that appears wherever you go: Helene Schjerfbeck. A street lined with early-19th-century weatherboard houses is named after her and at the ‘Helene Schjerfbeck’ cafe they serve lingonberry and bitter chocolate cake with the initials HS picked out in sugar. An actor, Anne Ingman, has made it her vocation to impersonate Schjerfbeck in a floor-length black costume with a battered leather handbag and a jade brooch like one Schjerfbeck wore. She guides visitors through a park where Schjerfbeck painted, tells stories about her life and points out a modern artwork by AK Dolven - a bell high in the oak trees that can be heard across town. It is another homage to Schjerfbeck. Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) remains through the latter part of her lifetime and since her death, one of Finland’s best-loved artists. But in the UK she remains little known. A solo show at the 'Royal Academy’ of 65 paintings - she made more than 1,000 in her lifetime - is putting this right. Called “Finland’s Munch” by one review in The Guardian, and a “painter of great subtlety and a master of the self-portrait,” in another, Schjerfbeck has been virtually unknown outside of her home country until now. Over her lifetime, the artist painted and drew about 40 self-portraits, which “chartered her moods, her ageing process and her physical decline to the point where the paintings become ironic and display gallows humor,” Jeremy Lewison writes. “In the late self-portraits, painted towards the end of the Second World War, when news of the death camps was leaking out, Schjerfbeck seemed to elide her own predicament with an expression of existential angst.
