How Eurovision 2023 Should Have Ended
Well, not quite. I just really want to talk about my favourites.
Because I've been a bit obsessed. This was the first Eurovision I actually watched. I didn't think this would be something for me, but as it turns out - I was wrong! There were so many amazing songs, iconic performance, etc.
The thing is, after re-watching and re-listening a lot of 2023 ESC, I realised that none of MY top 5 actually reached top 5. So that's what I want to share with you today.
But first - honorable mentions (actually turning this top 5 into a top 10)!
10. Lord of the Lost (Germany) - Blood & Glitter
Budget Rammstein is still some amount of Rammstein. These dudes just seem really nice.
9. Mae Muller (UK) - I Wrote a Song
Was she out of breath? Definitely. But still... The song is really catchy and the visual presentation was incredible. Didn't deserve the last place for sure.
8. Loreen (Sweden) - Tattoo
Basically everyone and their mum pointed out already how convenient it is for Eurovision to come back to Sweden for the ABBA anniversary... Still, Loreen has a beautiful voice and this was a solid song.
7. Käärijä (Finland) - Cha Cha Cha
Cha, Cha Cha, Cha Cha Cha Cha!
Tumblr media
6. Alessandra (Norway) - Queen of Kings
She was a favourite of a friend of mine and I can really see why. Strong, beautiful voice. Powerful song. Nice performance.
And now, finally, my top 5!
5. Voyager (Australia) - Promise
youtube
I... really like this. At a glance this seems like a mix of generic synthpop and genric rock, but that crescendo! It feels so optimistic, so nice and fun. I have no idea why but this song just always puts a big, stupid smile on my face.
Tumblr media
4. La Zarra (France) - Évidemment
youtube
I feel like instead of bringing generic popsongs, it's always better when Eurovision contestants bring something that feels specifically "of their nation". This is definitely a great example of that. Gotta love La Zarra's voice and presence. She's incredible.
Tumblr media
3. Teya & Salena (Austria) - Who The Hell Is Edgar?
youtube
This is actually my favourite song of the whole competition. I've listened to it so goddamn much in the past few weeks. Also, I'm in love with Teya. And possibly Salena. They are amazing, incredible, and just overall iconic.
Just the creativity of taking a name of one of the most famous writers on the planet and turning it into... a beat? It's a song about getting possesed by the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe, but also about up-and-coming female song writers getting nothing for their work. I love Teya and Salena and I love this goddamn song.
Oh mio padre, there's a ghost in my body!
Tumblr media
But, when we're talking performances, there are two that I would rate even higher than that...
2. Pasha Parfeni (Moldova) - Soarele şi Luna
youtube
This was where my vote went. I'm not even that into the song, but the performance is... well, spellbinding, really. I don't even know how to explain it. It's really the combination of both that works for me so well, I think.
Tumblr media
And finally, my number 1...
Vesna (Czech Republic) - My Sister's Crown
youtube
Yeah, they're from my country.
But I genuinely thought they were incredible! An awesome, cool song mixing modern pop with folk music. An amazing, complex choreography. Singing in four languages!
Tumblr media
And that's not even taking in account the messaging of the piece. Not just the call for female empowerement. But also the radical, pan-slavic yet anti-russian sentiment. And also - the hands! Specifically, the SOS sign that they are doing. Everything here has layers to peel off.
This was overall an incredible song and performance. Vesna is brilliant. It's a crime they didn't make it ito the actual top 5.
That's it! Those are my favourite performances and songs of Eurovision 2023. What do you think of my takes? Hot? Cold? Shit? Let me know!
Thanks for reading this!

Song Review: Austria
A twitter account leaked a clip of the song months ago (thanks for spoiling the fun) and now we’ve finally got the full version. Does it live to the expectations? let’s see...
Teya & Salena - Who The Hell Is Edgar?
Personal opinion: I both love and hate this. Love because it’s a fun bop that makes me dance, hate because it’s got me singing POE POE POE when I should be focused on working (thankfully I work at home so no one’s ears are tortured). But yeah, for a song whose name screams meme material, this is unironically great. It has all the qualities of a solid hit with the production and the melody, but also some clever and quirky lyrics with a deeper meaning than it seems. Kinda like with Konstrakta last year, even though the songs are otherwise completely different. Didn’t expect Austria to send something like this, but I’m loving it!
Prediction: Hello, it’s a bop amongst the safe pop songs in the second semi. Easy qualifier and a left-side placing in the final, as long as the performance is good. Of the songs selected so far, this screams televote magnet along with Finland and Moldova.

Semi-final votes and comments, now in finals order! First, the scores I gave them, with a reminder that these can and absolutely do change between semi and final.
10/12: Australia 8/12: Norway, Portugal, Moldova, Finland, Slovenia, Albania, Austria 7/12: Serbia, Sweden, Czechia, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, Armenia 6/12: Israel, Cyprus 5/12: Croatia 4/12: Switzerland, Estonia
No numerical score for the auto qualifiers.
And, my initial comments!
Austria: Okay, this one is making me grin and is also pretty catchy. 8/12 just for doing something genuinely different!
Portugal: Oh shit this is fun. Energetic torch song in Portuguese with a red dress I'm pretty sure the singer nicked from Conchita Wurst (complementary). I'm into it! 8/12
Switzerland: Oh no, a Heavy Topic Song™. Listen I respect it but is it really Eurovision? 4/12
Poland: I feel like I'm watching an aerobics video from the 90s. Produced in Spain. Which is odd, since they're Polish. On the other hand, I am jiggling my leg! Maybe it's Second Semi Final Syndrome's lower standards? 7/12
Serbia: Staging is really strong this year! Oh we're straight video game now. Wasn't sure at first but it's definitely growing on me! 7/12
France: I'm giving them nul points based solely on being a Mr Bean enjoyer. Okay no it's not bad. Ballady vibes but could be a banger.
Cyprus: Australia's back-up entry! He came 7th in the selection show last year (Voyager came second). …yeah no dull. Oh well. 6/12
Spain: Yeah I'm gonna have to wait to see the whole thing, but looks interesting. Maybe not my thing, but interesting!
Sweden: Loreen is back, too! I do wonder about this, previous winners returning tends not to play out great unless you're Johnny Logan. …It is a bit panini press, yeah XD Yeah honestly I'm not feeling this, definitely not as much as Euphoria, which I goddamn adored. It's still really solid, it's just lacking something? I suspect it'll win XD;; 7/12
Albania: Oh there's the drama. Not in English, rad costumes! 8/12
Italy: Eh, doesn't really do much for me.
Estonia: Nifty a cure for the fact that I've been awake for nearly two hours and it's only 5:20 AM. *faceplants on the keyboard 4/12
Finland: “When your sleeves say Met Gala but your chest says Vicks VaporRub.” The fan favourite! You go dude bust out of that box. I'm not actually 100% sold on it musically, but the presentation is top notch. Oh hey I really dig that last bit, actually! Rainbows! 8/12
Czechia: Oh these visuals slap. Not 100% sold on the song itself but the presentation is really cool. 7/12
Australia: Yeah here we go! Honestly so glad we're closing the show. Very synthwavey vibes but like, synthwave goes rock. And our old friend, the wind machine! And a keytar! Fuck yeah that's a closer! 10/12
Belgium: God this gets points just for not making me fall asleep. The Ballroom vibe is fun as hell too. 7/12
Armenia: Oh god this is so slow. Armenia, it's 5:13 AM, it's too early for a slow song. There we go, picked up! Yeah, aside from the slow start, this works. 7/12
Moldova: Welcome back, Pasha! I did love Lăutar. Oh shit this is fun as hell, really digging the staging and costuming, it's got some fun folky elements but amped up. 8/12
Ukraine: It's kind of giving 90s boy band, alas.
Norway: Oh this is a strong start! Costuming is dramatic, it's got energy, I dig it! Oof, that high note didn't quite hit, though. 8/12
Germany: ‘Blood and Glitter' is a hell of a title. They look like they're gonna be fun as hell!
Lithuania: Slow start, but some big vocals to save it a bit. I'm sorry I'm so tired. 6/12
Israel: It feels listenable but in the most generic way possible? Like, “Okay, start with interesting visuals, put some soaring vocals in, now do a rap bit, now do a dance, now end with pyros!” Like objectively I'm not sure there's anything wrong with it but it just feels… generic!! 6/12
Slovenia: Points for not English + I kinda want the lead singer's shirt + it's funky + band! With instruments! It's certainly no Maneskin, but yeah, definitely favourite of the night so far! 8/12
Croatia: Myf (Australian commentator) just described them as bonkers so I am eagerly awaiting this. …It is indeed bonkers! Not sure about the weird military-esque vibe but it's also giving somewhat cheerleader? Okay this is basically nigh unlistenable but it does get Bonkers Points™. 5/12
United Kingdom: It's certainly not bad! It's just very… more of the same, I guess?
So starting out with a really fun one, Australia and Finland have not-great places in the very middle of the pack, and we're ending with something very… samey. Well, we'll see how it goes!

Eurovision 2023
Hoo boy what a contest we had this year! Germany perfectly predicted the mood with their song title "Blood & Glitter"; first it was the latter and after the announcement of the winner it has been the former. Sweden won with a very professional and totally bland performance with a landslide of jury votes that were basically impossible to beat with audience votes... Which was suspiciously convenient considering 2024 will be an ABBA anniversary year. Watchers have been quite upset, and the most upset of them all have been Finnish people, because for the first time since Lordi our performance was hugely loved all around the world! What did we send to the contest then? Well...
Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha | Finland
We sent a green gremlin who was pretty much the exact opposite of everything Sweden represented. Käärijä was pretty much an unknown artist before this, he sang in his native language, his show was absolutely bonkers and the song was very non-traditional for Eurovision. And he very much won over audience's hearts despite placing second in the actual contest! I personally have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the song, but boy would've I still preferred it to win over that world's most calculated entry Sweden sent to compete.
Sudden Lights - Aijā | Latvia
Moving on to the entries I myself liked the best. I had a pretty good year as only one of my faves, Latvia, was dropped out in the semi-finals. Their song was a really nice mix of slower and more energetic parts, but maybe what costed them their place in the finals was the beginning, which was in my opinion the weakest part of the song.
Alessandra - Queen of Kings | Norway
Norway's song was generally well liked in Finland and I was pretty fond of it, too. The viking-like sea shanty vibes were just amazing!
Teya & Salena - Who The Hell Is Edgar? | Austria
This year there were several wacky songs and shows and many of them even hid an important message into their music. I liked pretty much all of them, but my favorite was Austria's criticism of the measly sums of money creative people often get from their work.
Alika - Bridges | Estonia
Melancholic songs are a difficult genre in Eurovision, as it's really hard to grasp the audience's attention with them when many other shows are full of pyrotechnics and lights and flashy colors. But despite all that I really adored Estonia's wistful song and their self-playing piano!
Voyager - Promise | Australia
There were also a few rock entries in the contest and it was pretty difficult to choose which one I liked better, Germany or Australia, but in the end I chose the latter. It's a real shame (and in my opinion weird, too) that neither of them got much points in the finals.
Pasha Parfeni - Soarele şi Luna | Moldova
While rock music is pretty common in the contest by this point, what I never expected was that "weird forest rave" was also going to be a genre that we are going to return several times to! I am not complaining though, as I absolutely loved Moldova's contribution to the collection. It was definitely one of my favorites from this year.
Luke Black - Samo Mi Se Spava | Serbia
My number on fave this time around came from Serbia. To me it had it all: song that sounded haunting and original, really interesting game-like show elements and extremely relatable lyrics. The song was basically about "the world is burning and I just wish I could sleep forever" and like yeah, me too Serbia, me too.

My personal top 37 for Eurovision 2023 Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 I dont' even know what to say anymore, it has been the most exhausting ESC season ever for me and I just want this Saturday to come and go
11) Italy - song is alright (it actually grew on me in these weeks), Marco is a great singer and a cool guy, but half because I didn't want it to win Sanremo and half because I have actual favourites I'm spending the season worrying to death about, I have exactly zero interest about what happens to Due Vite in Liverpool
10) Moldova - how often does it happen to have two returning artists from the same year? Seeing Pasha and Loreen meet again was so cute! (and the fact that Ivi Adamou was there as well made the whole thing even better asdfghjffg) Anyway lol the song is awesome, Moldova incredibly managed to find a middle ground between genuine ethnodance and the amateurish country fair performance from last year, and I'm happy about it Lautar is also one of the few songs I actually love from 2012 btw, just as an add-on :'' He looks hella fine too but shh
9) United Kingdom - purely and simply a bop, it almost makes me forget how much of a tamarrata* it is asdfghjk As for its chances in Liverpool, if the pre-parties are of any indication, there's no way in hell this will get a top10 like many seem to predict, more like it will be lucky to get out of the bottom 5 :'' (*tamarrata = something camp and cringy and excessive, that sometimes you like exactly because of that lol)
8) Czechia - I usually adore songs with a women-supporting-women narrative, this one is no exception, and it also has a double reading which makes it even cooler I was a bit afraid that if they kept the aesthetic of the video on stage it could end up looking messy and uncoordinated, but luckily they decided to make it tidier and in fact their performance on Tuesday was amazing
7) Austria - This, this is how you do clever and funny This could have ended up being an apocalyptic level of trash but, ironically, the nonsense narrative keeps its feet on the ground Thankfully it seems like it's not a Halo 2.0, though the performance could have used being a lil bit more whimsical and energetic
6) France - I love how this starts tango-ish and then catches rhythm! I have no idea how it will go, France was my winner last year and I never would have imagined an almost last place for them, so yeah :'' I don't think they can snatch the win but I'd be on board with them trying purely because that would mean a new Sweden vs France death match which, like, AAAAAAAAAAAAA
5) Norway - this is the first song from this year I listened to and I'm still bobbing my head from that first time ahah This sounds like a song KEiiNO could have sung, which in my book is always a compliment We'll give her a wagon of points as soon as the commentators let it slip that she's Italian lol
4) Finland - This is me having a drunken dream while also never having been drunk in my whole life :'' Look, I love this song, or it wouldn't be in my top 5, it's a banger, it's fun and it's been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it in the studio version (the live rendition sucks, I know you all know but choose not to acknowledge it c:), I actually like the way it has two very different styles and the moment it leaves the rappish part to basically become the Carameldansen makes me fall from the chair every time It does deserve to do well. Does it deserve to win though? Ehhhh personally no, I don't think this is enough
3) Serbia - This year every time I think I have listened to the most feverdream-ish song of the line-up there comes another right after to prove me wrong lmao This is so weirdly composed, it pulls my nerves right out of me but like in a good way?? The part where Luke starts ''unplugging'' the dancers and his voice becomes low and rough gives me such a fine tingle in the stomach AHHHHH Serbia wants a win and it damn well shows, and maybe it won't happen this year but if they keep this up I don't think they will have to wait for much longer
2) Spain - this is genuinely amazing and I think it grew to be the only song that wouldn't make me want to set fire to the universe if it won in Sweden's place lol just because it's so ethnically artsy and well-sung and it has such sad melancholic good lyrics, plus I think Blanca would actually make a good winner ''Ay child, when I die let them bury me on the moon so that I'll see you every night, every night except one'' Best damn lyrics of the year hands down! This >>>>>>>>>>>>>> booty hypnotic
1) Sweden - The way she claims exactly every bit of the stage that she needs to, the way she shapes sound between her teeth, the desperation in her voice in the final part, the actual tattoo element which is important in her Berber culture, the creativity in the desert environment with both sand and sky, the double reference to the Atlas myth and the Atlas mountains, there's so much cool shit around this even if you don't like the song and so much to be happy about her participating again and so many people are choosing to stay mad for some of the most ridiculous reasons I've ever heard Unbelievable Not to mention that ''it's a song contest!!'' only when it fits their narrative I know she probably won't, it would be way too perfect and eurofans this year have decided that making literal history isn't cool, but IF she does…

My thoughts on the Final Eurovision songs in order of performance tonight. Keep in mind, I haven't listened to most of these songs more than once and I'm an unapologetic ballad enjoyer.
Overall, I genuinely think, there are so many amazing singers this year, I was super surprised during the semi finals. Their voices are incredible.
Who the Hell is Edgar? - Austria It grows on me, wasn't an instant love and definitely not my favourite but it's fun.
Ai Coração - Portugal I unironically really enjoy this one. Plus, it's in Portuguese so that's an extra point for me.
Watergun - Switzerland It's probably controversial for me to say but I really really like this one. Is it a bit tone-deaf? Uh year, definitely but I do have this in my favourites regardless of that.
Solo - Poland Now this one is really growing on me. Is it one of the best songs? no. Is it groundbreaking? absolutely not but it's a fun song to casually listen to. I can definitely imagine this will get played on the radio a lot after Eurovision.
Samo Mi Se Spava - Serbia Not my cup of tea, I fear. I don't hate it and don't dislike it as much as I did when I first heard it. Plus, it has the native language so that's a plus point.
Évidemment - France Just listened to it for the very first time and I think I like it. It's not a winner song but it's not bad.
Break A Broken Heart - Cyprus His voice really surprised me in the semi-final and I'm glad Cyprus qualified because I really like this song. Yes, it's a "boring" ballad but whatever.
Eaea - Spain Not a song I would actively search for to listen to again but it's not awful either.
Tattoo - Sweden Why the hell did no one tell me that LOREEN is back?! Another "boring" ballad that I really adore. Her voice is incredible and I'm glad she's back but I understand why people find this boring.
Duje - Albania If you can be sure of something, then it's that I rarely vibe with Albania's entries, this year isn't much different. Although, I have to admit I already like it better than the first time I listened to it. I like the chorus and they sing in Albanian which is pretty nice.
Due Vite - Italy Just heard it for the first time and it's really nice. I don't think it'll stand out much but I like it a lot.
Bridges - Estonia A lovely ballad but I fear it's a bit forgettable.
Cha Cha Cha - Finland Now let me tell you, I didn't like this one at all the first time I heard it. The last Chorus was fine to me but everything else was a big no. Since then, it was grown on me A LOT. Now, I really enjoy it and I can't sit still when this plays. I definitely see the appeal.
My Sister's Crown - Czechia I actually kinda like this? I like the chorus, at least. I love that they sing in four different languages. Hello? That's incredible.
Promise - Australia I'm actually 50/50 about this. I love the retro vibe, it's fun and vibey but the metal part is not my thing at all. So I don't like that but other than that part, I enjoy this one.
Because of You - Belgium It's vibey and funky, I enjoy it but I don't love it.
Future Lover - Armenia Another "boring" ballad that I actually enjoy. Plus, there are Armenian parts in this one which sounds lovely. It's not in my favorites and I think it won't stand out but it's a nice song.
Soarele şi Luna - Moldova This one is super interesting and I'm unsure how I feel about it. I don't dislike it but I don't love it either. But he sings in Romanian, plus point, and it's kinda vibey so yeah, I don't know.
Heart of Steel - Ukraine A great entry. I actually really like it and it will go in my playlist. I don't love all parts of the song but it's a good one. Plus, there's Ukrainian.
Queen of Kings - Norway I'm unsure about this one, honestly. I like it a lot but I don't love it. At least not after listening to it twice. But it has me bopping along.
Blood & Glitter - Germany Just listened to it for the first time and it's not for me. I'm just not a metal fan but it has good parts that I enjoy.
Stay - Lithuania And another "boring" ballad. I like her voice a lot and I do enjoy the song.
Unicorn - Israel I'm 50/50 about it. I like the beginning, the pre-chorus and the chorus but I don't love the second half of the song. Maybe it's a song that'll need to grow on me.
Carpe Diem - Slovenia I actually really enjoy this one a lot. It's really funky and kinda fun and they sing in Slovenian. But I don't know if it'll be memorable in all of this. I hope so.
Mama ŠČ! - Croatia Not for me, I fear. I don't hate it but I probably wouldn't listen to it again after this.
I Wrote a Song - UK Apparently, everyone here hates this. I don't know. I don't hate it, I don't love it either. It's vibey but pretty forgettable.

2014 - final
originally posted 5/29/20
Germany I've always found Is It Right a solidly unpleasant song. I'm not fond of the musical style they're using (polka, maybe?), and Ela's voice is just... she doesn't seem to have much control over it. Beyond that, the staging is sparse, the other two band members look incredibly out of place onstage, and Ela's outfit confuses the heck out of me. France As much of a trip as this one is, I really enjoy it. It's lighthearted and fun... even though it's at times atrocious to look at. I don't usually like songs I can't take seriously, but there's something so excited about this one. I think that this entry (along with the Latvian and Greek ones) are products of Alcohol is Free from the year before... just a bunch of free, unconstrained fun times on the stage. Idk I just really like the chorus of this. Italy The live performance really brings this song to life. Emma's live vocals might not be as strong or supported as some of the other contestants, but she's rocking out all over the stage, working an attitude that perfectly meshes with the rock vibes of the song. I guess I have some questions for whoever thought white and gold faux-Roman stage outfits were a good idea but honestly, I don't hate it, I just feel like it wasn't as effective as another choice might have been. La Mia Citta is a really fun song, great to rock out to, just as Emma does onstage. Spain This has to be one of my favorite recent Spanish entries. Ruth Lorenzo's power vocals really hit during the bridge, it's a good song, and the staging here... there were times where it actually looked like it was raining on stage. Pretty incredible, and a shame that Spain has lost this touch in recent years. Miki and Barei are nice and all, but when will Spain send a song like this again? Denmark The Danish Bruno Mars has come to Eurovision! Cliche Love Song is delightfully tongue-in-cheek for the usually ultra-serious host entries. It's a really great song but sadly Basim's live performance doesn't do anything for me. Like, it's solidly just alright. There's nothing especially bad about the staging, I just feel that Basim doesn't pull it off well. United Kingdom File under: songs that technically aren't about socialism but are, like, totally about socialism. The "power to the people" bit is so catchy, and so telling once you know what you're looking for! Yeah, so this is a great song and Molly is performing the hell out of it, but there were aspects of the live performance that just seemed a bit off. Molly's stage outfit and the henna she had on, the asymmetrical prechoruses, parts of the staging... this was actually really strong for a UK entry but it definitely could have been executed a lot better. This is, I think, the first top ten of the one posted here that doesn't include a song left in the semis? 2014 was a really strong year musically for the most part so I enjoy a lot of the songs, even those I ranked in the 20s. Voting/intervals The section thanking the commentators was really funny because, firstly, Graham Norton is always hilarious to hear, but also the German commentator Peter Urban totally didn't know that the fireworks were coming and was so surprised he started swearing a blue streak. I love that. The political implications of that Ode to Joy performance... I read a paper once about how Ode to Joy is basically the unofficial national anthem of Europe/the EU and so it was interesting to see Denmark literally throw it in with their hosting like yeah, all y'all are European, yes even you Israel and the Caucasus nations. The 12 points song was cute. While I found Pilou's China references funny I do wonder if it was a little bit... not to taste. Although the hosts seem to acknowledge this with Nikolaj telling him to shut up and later telling him that not all of the things he named were actually Chinese. Between this and the other skits where Pilou features I'm pretty sure he's the planned gagman to make fun of things like "the host city has to be perfect!" and the whole Eurovision museum sketch... yeah so this was planned and was probably a very tongue-in-cheek joke about the globalization of the contest and whatnot but it just came off kind of wrong. I also caught a shot of the JESC girl from Malta hanging out with the Maltese delegation... that was so cute... I love love love the idea of having all the finalists perform Rainmaker with Emmelie. I really enjoyed seeing the contestants jamming out all together, and you could even see who were friends - I noticed, for example, the singer from Iceland and one of the guys from France dancing together. Much love to the Tolmachevy twins, girlies stayed positive all through the voting even though they were getting booed left and right. And they were only 17 too. Honestly, one of my goals in life is to be one of the cool spokespeople who greets in the language of the host country, and not just hello either, delivering like full-on sentences. They're icons. I CANNOT with the Finnish guy who, when asked to present his points, just started full on rapping, entirely unrelated to ESC, and got Pilou and Nikolaj to dance along. Thoughts after watching 2014 has another of my absolute favorite stage designs. I really love the hosts (even if Pilou's gags sometimes go too far) and the postcard concept this year was really innovative. Like 2015, again, this was a high-quality year in terms of song composition - 2013-2015 were really solid Eurovision years, I think.

From first Semi-Final, who do you like the most? I'm curious. 💖 /Snake
I'm coming straight from the livestream and I'm ANGRY and DISAPPOINTED!
Like wtf were those results?! Almost none of my favourites pulled through and WHO THE FUCK VOTED FOR SWITZERLAND?!
Okay, let me see:
Latvia - Eat Your Salad: Let me preface this with saying that I don't listen to the songs beforehand because I like to be surprised and I was definitely not disappointed with this one😂 It was funky, they had the costumes and great performance
Slovenia - Disko: Hello, funky schoolboy disco?? It was so good? If I were younger I would go to prom with them.
Ukraine - Stefania: I’ve got a big heart for folk inspired songs and it had flute guy!
Moldova - Trenuleţul: It’s crazy, colourful and loud and I love that. Exactly the energy I want to see at eurovision.
Denmark - The Show: The beginning didn’t catch me at all but thankfully they got some rock in there. Also girlband, hell yeah.
Austria - Halo: ....*sigh* I don’t even want to like it bc the DJ was meh and they could have picked another singer that would have fit better but I was partying so hard to it. I’m ashamed but dancing💃 (It’s not even what usually listen to at all but Alex Mattson has ruined my taste in music I say with love) - the lalala part also reminds me of a popular song and for the sake of me I can’t figure it out.
Iceland - Með Hækkandi Sól: Sometimes I love some country and even though it was quieter I thought it was lovely🥰
And who got into the final? Only two😭 They were all robbed. Like I didn’t expect for Moldova to make it at all.

These are my thoughts about each performance + the semi in general
Few things first: I talk a lot about not understanding the words, that is not about the singers accent, it’s about how their singing. A lot of the first few acts were crouching, laying down, and that fucks up your voice a lot. A lot of them were also very breathy and they were not opening their mouth to sing, so this is way more about vocal technique.
Second, Eurovision may try to be apolitical but i am not, however Israel and Azerbaijan’s place in my ranking is because I genuinely did not like their songs and their performances.
Love that the postcards show a place in Ukraine and then show a similar place in the singers country.
Norway:
Meh. The only song I heard before the ESC, and the vocals were very bad (she sounded out of breathe most of the time). The outfit was definetly a choice (TM), cause it wasn’t very good looking and it seemed to hinder her movement. The dancers were the best parts
Malta:
Very fun and I liked them showing previous Malta singers! I didn’t understand much of the lyrics besides feel better in my sweater and do you wanna dance but it reminded me a lot of discotheque
Serbia:
My biggest pet peeve is singers laying down so thank good it was over soon. Conceptually, it’s interesting but I also can barely understand what being sung, to the point where I’m not sure if the whole song is in Serbian or English. The singer is very good looking tho
Latvia:
Like the vocals, and the staging. I can understand something finally. Really liked the “beatboxing” and the lights. Also the other members of the band mouthing words along was fun to see. Is it just me or the songs these year are very short?
THE REST OF THE WORLD CAN VOTE THIS YEAR???? HELL YEAH BITCH!
The rapping was unexpected but not welcomed since it was better than i thought.
HOLY SHIT ITS THE MAKING YOUR MIND UP GANG (I don’t remember the name of the group sorry)
I’m gonna go hard on Portugal since they colonized my country
Portugal:
Thank god it’s not fado. Weirdly love her dress. Everytime I hear a Portuguese person I am reminded that although we speak the same language I cannot understand their accent. Bitch I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but… this is the best singer so far. Like even with the accent, I’m understand a lot, her vocals are great (and she’s moving A LOT), it feels different and new, and it was a very fun performance, it made me wanna move.
Ireland:
This outfit is so sparkly Jesus Christ. Even though they look like a 80’s rejected Mamma Mia tribute act, they sound surprised good. Sir, why is your mic so far away from your mouth? The lyrics are corny tho. I wanna steal the pianists jacket.
Croatia:
ROCK EM ROLL BABY! Oh my god I love their outfits. I have no clue what the fuck I’m watching but I love it. Bitch they have to be queer, a straight person can’t come up with shit like this. I weirdly love this song. NOT THEM STRIPPING AND SOME GUY BRINGING ROCKETS?!?!?
Switzerland:
Please don’t sing in French. I beg of you. Love the singers voice. Humf it’s kinda deep and husky in the begging, I love it so much. Also love the piano in the beginning. But also what the hell are these pants. Love the slow down in the middle. And the ending was also pretty good!
I know there’s a whole thing with ESC and how they support Israel, so it might be hypocritical for me to watch the show and do this, but I will not comment on Israel perfomance.
Moldova:
By their hair, I can already tell Moldova’s gonna do something… interesting. Oh my god the guy on the flute caught me by surprise. Anyone who speaks Romanian can tell me if the song talks about scorpions or are the ladies hair just like… a choice? I feel like I’m watching a ritual or something. Also this song makes me want to get up and move my body. Also not the flautist proving the instruments are live cause there were 2 times where his mouth wasn’t blowing the flute.
Also love the hosts black dress with flames, she looks fucking awesome.
The Croatia guys are really serving looks this ESC. Love that for them. Actually, most people looked pretty good in that carpet.
Sweden:
Everybody knows Loreen’s gonna qualify just because she is loreen, and listen I have nothing against her is just that I usually don’t like Sweden’s entries. And I also I’m not the biggest Euphoria fan (it’s a good song it just wasn’t my winner). Also is she indigenous (genuine question)?
Okay this song is pretty good, I just wish she’d get up. The chorus sound fun but I have no clue what the words are tbh. I’m just understanding uh-oh-uh. Also love her outfit.
Oh my god Filomena Cautela is gonna show up!
Azerbaijan:
Not gonna lie I might be biased because of Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, especially in 2020/2021, but this song is just meh. But also the fact that they entered this contest in 2008 and they have yet to send a song in their language… damn (same critique to Sweden, who hasn’t sent a song in Swedish in so fucking long).
Czechia:
Already love this. Not the biggest fan of the English verses. Love the hair and outfit, and the overall vibe, makes me want to punch a man in the balls. Bora galera mulheres.
Netherlands:
This dude looks likes a esquerdomacho, I’m sorry, I bet he’s great IRL. I already don’t like this song for some reason. I don’t know it feels like those trying too much to have a meaning when it has 0. However, cookie points for calling God she.
Finland:
Not the song being called Cha Cha Cha. Okay this song is very different than what I thought it would be, but I like it. Always trust Finland to bring something different to the table. Not the song completely changing vibes halfway through. What the fuck was this human centered but make it fucking happened? This feels like an acid trip. The dancers smiling is giving me there is no war in Bah Sing Se.
Hold up. You HAVE TO PAY TO VOTE???? EUROPE WHAT THE FUCK???? I was so excited to vote but do I look like I shit gold to pay for this in EUROS???? Fuck off.
ALYOSHA OH MY GOD, YES! I don’t care about the British lady but oh my gosh sweet people girl is back. Lowkey wished the whole song was in Ukrainian and it was just Alyosha. Also the staging of this performance, very powerful.
Also will Ruslana and Jamala show up (I think they probably will I just want to know if it’s in the Semis or the Final).
Does anyone actually care about Rita Ora? Seriously, just bring more previous Ukrainian entries, they were more interesting.
I like how they showed the UK and Ukraine’s history being somewhat interconected in this competition. Also Graham Norton is always a gem.
Awwwn I loved watching the reaction from Ukraine’s commentator from their win last year.
Oh god this god forsaken Irish turkey…
NOT MALTA’S SINGER WITH A WOODY TOY
They really gonna act like Mans was just a host and not a full on winner?
VAMPIRES ARE ALIVE I KNEW THEY WOULD SHOW THEM FOR THIS GAME!
I’m gonna count how many points I get. Okay I got all 3 points so far. I… I’m not proud how much I know.
I don’t why the finish dude has so much autistic swag for me for some reason. Not gonna lie I think the unicorn thing is so ridiculous, I hate it actually. I love malta’s vibe.
Oh god they gonna talk about Rock in eurovision.
Man I love Julia and Hannah. This air guitar thing was fun. Man the Ted Lasso lady is doing great as hosting things this year.
Instead of big five I heard “big fry”
Love Germany already. They look hot. KKKKKKKK THE GERMAN AND THE FRENCH SAYING THEIR KIDS AND THE ITALIAN TALKING ABOUT PLANTS. This Italian dude is a vibe, god.
Y’all the French entry does sound good but it looses me with the “France” belt. Like I already don’t like French or France in general, and they do this, c’mon.
Oh my god this German dude I love him. Y’all I already love the German entry. Fuck I’m gonna root for them. I mean the song is called blood and glitter, they already won for me. Also his makeup is stellar.
Oh my god I knew I knew Marco from somewhere, he was the 2013 entry. Italy always brings a song that makes me love them all over again. His vocals are beautiful, although the outfit is not the greatest. Yes I will sleep more Marco, don’t worry.
Okay my ranking (this was harder than I thought because most songs were not good):
Portugal
Croatia
Czechia
Finland
Switzerland
Sweden
Moldova
Malta
Latvia
Serbia
Norway
Ireland
Israel
Azerbaijan
Netherlands
Israel, Serbia and Norway qualifying are beyond me but I’m happy with the rest, just wished Malta qualified.

Eurovision semi 1 and my thoughts cuz I have final exams and do not want to study yeah
1- Albania: was it me or was the singer completely out of tune...
2- Latvia: LMAO
3- Lithuania: I... forgot for a hot sec but!! it was good? not really my vibe but it was unique
4- Switzerland: listen. I have ADHD and can't handle slow songs for SHIT cuz they make me nervous as hell for some reason. this didn't make me nervous, just very bored
5- Slovenia: nice!! bit bland maybe?? but it's kinda folkish, which I love
6- Ukraine: again not my vibe but actually very good, I like that it's not in English and has the traditional aspects as well as rap
7- Bulgaria: if I wasn't a lesbian I would probably be in love right now. literally a bunch of old men playing guitars
8- the Netherlands: my country!! way too overplayed on radio here but it's a good song, will get us in the finale for sure
9- Moldova: what the fuck?? blitzkrieg bop but not?? absolutely insane. bonkers. superb
10- Portugal: olivia rodrigo?
11- Croatia: they would play this on the pop radio channel I used to religiously listen to when I was in the closet
12- Denmark: hello lgbt+ community!! listen. listen. gays with guitars
13- Austria: with the utmost respect, no thank you
14- Iceland: yes please. women with guitars. it's like three witches enchanting you. this is why I'm gay
15- Greece: she looks good
16- Norway: g-grandma? put this dance on just dance asap
17- Armenia: cute? interesting set, I have to Google the meaning behind that
I feel like this year doesn't really compare to last year.. also they switch camera angles very fast it drives me insane

Block the tags : Eurovision 2022 is in two months ! (may 10th)
Time to rate the songs - part 4
Serbia, Ireland, Romania, Switzerland and Moldovia
(Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3)
Let's jump right into it.
Serbia : Konstrakta, In Corpore Sano
Oooouh, title in Latin ?! We're getting sexy right away... (Yes, Latin is sexy, don't @ me).
Oh. My. Gods. Right from the very first fraction of second!!!! Wow.
Holyyyyyy Shiiiiiiit. No, you don't get it, Serbia. Always. Brings. The. Heat. An epic, vocalized song about the goddamn absurdity of the health system with funny lyrics and a goddamn perfect imagery (wash your hands dammit)? Y'all get my 12 points already.
"A sick mind in a healthy body, a sad soul in a healthy body, a desperate mind in a healthy body" : YES, YES, YES.
Pros: perfect voices, perfect lyrics, perfect choreography, I know how to say "to be healthy" in Serbian now. Cons: ... could have some more beats? Overall: 10/10.
Ireland : Brooke, That's Rich
Dua Lipa said "next time just call me in, yeah". "You're getting sick of them", I'm getting bored with ya.
Pros: nice voice, she pretty. Cons: basic. No originality. No Eurovision stamp of crazy. Overall: 6/10.
Romania : WRS, Llámame
Romania either pleases me a lot, or disappoints me. Let's see which one it is this year !
Hmmmmm, spicyyyy. But will it be enough...
Pros: leather! pr0n stache! spicy bi! dance moves! Cons: they must have used all their braincells for the chorus in Spanish because the rest of the lyrics in English is just reheated and overheard. Overall: 7/10.
Switzerland : Marius Bear, Boys Do Cry
... I haven't even hit play yet but Marius dear. Are you trying to challenge The Cure ? Don't. Just. Don't.
*deep sigh* This is the 5th song at least about a kid who's different from the other but can still become whoever they want. I'm not saying it's not an important message, believe, I'm a children's librarian, it's like my whole agenda, to promote diversity and believing in your dreams. I'm saying, is this the best way? A slow, sad, classic ballad? Again, it's not that I hate ballads. It's just that when it's the 10th in a row, with basically the same lyrics...
Pros: nice voice. Cons: everything else. Overall: 5/10.
Moldova : Zdob şi Zdub & Fraţii Advahov, Trenuleţul
Can I ask someone for a how-to-pronounce guide please and thanks.
*wheezing* Oh ho ho ho ho, I love this. I love it.
I'm allowing myself a slight aparté here, because I really love linguistics and I'm currently fascinated by the interconnections and similitudes between Indo-European languages. Moldovan/Romanian is an Italic language. Yep. Just like French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese... It belongs in the Eastern Romance branch of the Romance languages, but it is a Romance language. Hence why people who speak either French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese will sometimes feel like they're understanding parts of the lyrics without the subtitles. I know you guys don't care about this, but I love languages and I love being able to sort of kinda understand a language I don't speak just because it descends from the same roots as ones I do speak.
Okay, back on track (like a train, ha ha!).
Pros: Folklore! I love trains. FUN. Cons: nothing. Overall: 10/10.
And a very special "boooooo" to Switzerland who takes the last place of the competition ! Sorry, guys. But a very special HELL YEAH to the Balkans for bringing the Fun and the Fire, you guys rock ! Huge fan of the Balkans.
***********************************************************************
See y'all after I've slept 12 hours for the next five : Belgium, UK ( do I really have to...), North Macedonia, Ukraine, Austria.
ALSO, I'm always down to speak about linguistics! Especially Indo-European and Afroasiatics languages. Just so you know.

Azerbaijan and Armenia idc if u release your songs after 1000 years, I'll still post my prediction for the semifinals and finals, thank you 💗
Semifinal 1 predictions
ALBANIA - Banger, definitely will get huge televote support. I can see Ronela delivering the hell out of this song. A clear Q
LATVIA - Oh Latvia how I wish you would finally qualify after 6 years. These guys really have the charisma and all to get some televotes. I feel the juries might kill this, though, because of its silly joke-y mood. Let's hope not. This is fun, but currently putting this at "Maybe"
SWITZERLAND - This is a sweet song that I can see the juries falling for it, but will probably crash with the televotes. I'd say Borderline for the moment but will have to wait for the staging cuz you never know.
SLOVENIA - Myeah...I don't feel them qualifying at all, I'm so sorry. It is pretty charming and jazzy but literally has no chance. NQ
BULGARIA - Same story as Slovenia, but replace the charm jazz part with boring dad rock done wrong. NQ
MOLDOVA - GUYS PLEASE MAKE A BATSHIT CRAZY SHOW FOR THIS I BELIEVE IN Z&Z SUPREMACY AND THAT THEY WILL QUALIFY. Currently "Maybe" since I don't see it doing so well in the tops so far.
UKRAINE - 1. Ukraine always qualifies. 2. They will also most likely recieve pity votes, 3. Their song is a fuckin mazing and I love it and it also seems to get great feedback...so Q
LITHUANIA - I can see the juries liking this (also I wish this doesn't get the fate of Crazy and Funny Girl in 2018 for also being jazzy simple songs but remaining in semi). Borderline maybe? I wouldn't call it a lock Q just yet.
NETHERLANDS - This is really well recieved and reminds me a lot of City Lights. I can see this safely Q
NORWAY - I see a KEiiNO scenario with these wolf boyos. Televote crazy with it, juries not. At all. Wouldn't be surprised to see them missing out in the jury vote as well (and what the fuck how did the juries not place KEiiNO in top 10 smh) but for the moment another safe Q I'd say, the televote will place this really high
PORTUGAL - This is another sweet simple song, but I have no idea how well this will do. Probably Borderline currently?
DENMARK - A pretty neat rock song. Could probably do ok-ish with the juries but I'm not too sure. NQ? Maybe?
ARMENIA - They didn't yet release the song but I heard somewhere that they found a leak and it's a generic pop song? Okay, I don't think they might get past the semi with that...but it's still nothing 100% confirmed. Won't label Armenia at the moment.
AUSTRIA - The live vocals will decide the fate of this. If she will sing well they're 100% in, if she won't uuuhhh...I still think they'll be in but I won't see them doing so well in the final. Q?
CROATIA - Same as Denmark, juries might like this, but not the televote. But I think this will do slightly worse than Denmark. NQ?
ICELAND - If this beautiful chill song in icelandic isn't qualifying I'm fuckin- I mean this pretty much stands out tbh and I feel it might either pull a Netherlands 2014 and do very good or Latvia 2019 and stay in semi...Borderline I guess?
GREECE - Yeah, this is in, I see this doing well with both televote and juries. Q
OVERALL
1st-3rd: Ukraine, Netherlands, Greece
4th-7th: Albania, Lithuania, Norway, Austria
8th-12th: Latvia, Switzerland, Moldova, Iceland, Portugal
13th-17th: Slovenia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Croatia
