So to provide some insight into some of this stuff, just based off of what I recall - the Satanick and Lil marriage doesn't seem to be purely political, because there are comics of Lil actually coming to comfort Satanick (hoping we get more of her in the future...), and DSP does seem to consider some of the depth with Satanick and such? Ivlis is just currently real fucking beaten down in general, which kinda sucks, and sucks a lot of the life out of him though. APSID is post neutral end of TGG tho, so we might get to see some more pre-nick Ivlis!! Regarding Etihw, a HUGE part of the issue was VGPerson's translation - whilst they did do an amazing job with translating it, they also took a lot of creative liberties with it, resulting in a flanderised version of Eti being presented to the western audience. This is both how we got Eti using they/them pronouns, bc of a misunderstanding of how the pronouns for Eti were used (for reference Eti uses Boku style pronouns, so the closest equivialent we've got is she/they??) And how we ended up with an Etihw who says stuff like "doo-doo head" and such, which is... wildly inaccurate to their character. They're a fair bit more mature in the original japanese with their teasing, from what I recall, which also explains some of the inconsistencies, but still innocent w/ regards to nsfw stuff, from what I remember? Also, speaking of VGPerson's mistranslations, did you hear about the Crow thing? Who we know to be Crow isn't actually Crow, Crow is a secret... child(?) of Kcalb's, we don't know the exact generation gap, but the person who he talks to isn't Crow!! Which is HUGE news, and a crazy mistranslation, that reframes a whole lot of things. With that said, this is all coming from someone who dislikes SatanIvlis with a PASSION, and had to live through the hell year of 2016. Whilst stuff does seem to have slowed down somewhat, and there is a fair bit more of the... memey stuff, for lack of a better word, there does seem to be some character development there? The stream thing may have been out of context, since the Wiki only reports the information that was provided, not the questions that were asked along with it, so the safest way of checking would be to hit up the stream itself. I'd imagine the context would have been someone asking if Satanick loved Ivlis/Licorice or such-- Sorry for the huge ramble in your inbox!! Turns out Tumblr removed the ask length limit, which was a choice, but yea! Hopefully we'll get more content that does dig into the depths of the characters in the future, take the english version of TGG with a grain of salt, I may or may not have been the anon who encouraged the original post that sparked all of this, Carnival Rhythm is in production, and Ear Theory is the new hotness! (also regarding the actual character depth thing, I imagine all it takes is some kind of bigger piece, since it's a lot easier to make content that memes around with characters than to dig into the depth of them, and with all the stresses going on for her, memeing around is almost certainly easier...)

I don't think there's anything inherently bad about taking creative liberties, since word-for-word japanese translations will otherwise result in being stiff and awkward. it's more about translating concepts and ideas, so taking creative liberties is an inevitable par for the course. I don't take issue with vgperson's translation either because things like different speech patterns and personal pronouns can be difficult to communicate into english.

admittedly the beach scene with Eti calling Kcalb an ultra doo-doo moron head is funny as fuck and I love it, but I understand if it isn't completely "accurate" to their character in the first place. my main issue with Etihw was the fact that they've been described as a "sheltered damsel" (in that trio pic with Fumus & Siralos), there was also something about them never having gone through anything traumatizing (I can't remember the exact phrasing but it was something alluding to that). they're a literal GOD who went through a war and had their subordinates die in it?? even if they never directly participated in it, it still doesn't make sense as to why they would be described as 'sheltered' of all things.

it's partially confusing because sometimes you can't really tell if DSP decided they wanted to change a character's core personality as a whole, or if a trait that wasn't there before/wasn't outright obvious is suddenly applied to said character - and any plotholes / gaps revolved around that are going to be filled in not until... years later at this point, so it becomes very frustrating when the line between the two becomes blurred: "is this a complete personality change because DSP didn't like the character's initial idea, or was it always planned and it's going to be explained later on in an upcoming story?" (like that point about Etihw I made just now about them being naive)

also, ain't nothing wrong with the meme'ing of their characters - even I like to see it, just tired of seeing the two same characters used in said act of meme'ing, yanno? STNK & Ivlis do seem to be getting more development outside of that (and small little quirks as I saw) to their characters, which is great, but it would be better if said development didn't constantly revolve around ONLY eachother.

I pretty much stopped going to the streams long ago, so I'm not sure what's been going on or really keeping up with any recent information. if that is the case though, then the "does he love" question seems kinda pointless to ask considering he's already professed his love to Ivlis in some of the mini-comics. would have been more of a plot twist if the answer to that were "no" lol.

I'm not quite sure what the "ear theory" is about (unless you meant war theory lmao). I do have quite a bit to say about ears though: did you know I thought Sal & Samekichi had elf-like triangle shaped ears at first, but then the manga revealed they instead just had normal, round-ish human-shaped ears??? kinda weird seeing them like that tbh.

hiii hello everyone! sorry it’s taken me so long to get on this BUT it’s all for good reason! i thought i would combine this post into me sharing some of the works i am most proud of this year as well as spreading more love in this wonderful little community because i truly love you all tons and being a part of such a lovely group of people has made me beyond happy this year. it’s been a difficult year for all of us and i’m just so glad that i can give back the love and care y’all can give to me 💛

1. my weary heart has come to rest in yours. this is a fic i wrote in an... interesting headspace, and i was really going through my chanonpom feelings at the time. i’m really proud of how it came out and i adored writing chanon through pom’s pov. also i kinda love how i tied in p’bird’s song prip dtah in with the fic because i adore the song and it fits so well with them.

2. petekao week 2020. i guess this is sort of cheating, because these are technically 7 fics, BUT. i am actually proud of myself for writing seven, and i think they’re all of fairly good quality. i just really love this little universe i created for the dbk characters after the show and this whole week was just so warm and lovely to be a part of.

3. this set of num and prang from a gift for whom you hate. this moment really stuck with me from the finale and i actually am really proud of the colouring and how it came out! i think the blues really popped and i managed to lighten this dark ass scene without whitewashing mek or aye. the fireworks gif also is one of my favourites i’ve made! num and prang’s whole relationship was so pure throughout the entirety of this show, i adored them. 

4. but love is impossible and it goes on despite the impossible. this is the longest fic i’ve posted so far and i’m super proud of it - it’s also my most well-received fic. the yunmeng brothers mean the world to me and i just... wanted to write about jiang cheng and his love for his brother and give them a somewhat happy ending, in one future at least.

5. there’s an art to honesty. i think i really nailed my version of kao in this work! i just really loved writing this fic so much, especially because it was right after the whole ‘scandal’ with new happened. i was really just finding a way to separate kao from him, and i delved into my feelings with this fic as well, because i relate to kao in multiple ways. either way, i thought writing this fic was fun and a lot of people loved it too, which made me so soft!

if you’ve read this far, i personally adore you! while this has been a difficult year, i am blessed to have been part of this loving community, and i really hope that next year will be kinder to us all and give us good shows and discussions! i love you all. stay safe and stay kind, friends 💛

hello secret santa!!! once again im sorry im only answering this several days later 😔 but welcome to the hellhole bl is!!!! i have a love/hate relationship with the genre and its community but, u kno, im still here so GDJDHDJ i can't really say much

i hope you can get around to watching the shows i mentioned because they are so so soooo good imo and i love them to death! 2gether was the series that consolidated me in the bl fandom this year and goddd theory of love is just. my favourite bl ever. hands down. maybe even one of my favourite series generally speaking!!! i love almost everything about it and third :(( third is me. i think i never related to a character as much as i did with third and i hold him so so so close to my heart 🥺 (and my love and respect for gun also help that hshdhd he did SO GREAT as third GOD. i cried from ep1 to ep12 NONSTOP bless)

as for other shows and couples, i think instead of writing an essay for each, i'll just say that im a big sucker for hurt/comfort and angst in general (cough tol, itsay, trapped, wyel). i Love stories that really draw u in and have u rooting and crying for and with the characters every step of the way!!!! and for couples huh.... i really like opposite but complementary dynamics (aka pangwave, tangfei, mantype, inkorn, idk if u watch friend zone but earthstud is also a great example!!!) i go 100% FERAL when two people who appear to be total opposites find a common goal and as they start to work together to achieve said goal, they learn that their differences aren't so bad and they complement and help each other in the best ways (YEAH OK IT'S PANGWAVE WHAT ABOUT IT 😭😭😭). also colours. i love love LOVE a good symbolism and color symbolism is tbh the BEST there is!!! i told sunset about you did a mind-blowing job at incorporating color throughout the show to help tell the story, it was amazing

and yeah! despite not being bl, i //have// to mention 3wbf and the gifted every time because they are unparalleled in terms of cast, production, plot, execution. everything about those shows was on point and they are both very important to me 🥰 and although not canon, pangwave (and chanonpom) makes me go absolutely feral all the time every time. they are That couple for me and ... yes i am a clown 🤡🤡🤡 but GOD THEY. litcherally no other couple will ever top them i think

DSP worlds masterpost

Hello, everybody! I was asked (long time ago.... I’m sorry.....) if there are any complete lists of all confirmed Mogeko worlds and their residents, and since I don’t think I’ve ever come across any satisfying compendium, I decided to make one myself. Here we go~  (under the cut because it’s longer than I expected)

1. Justim & Vicers - god of all gods and devil of all devils, kinda outside of the list. They’re brothers. Sometimes Mogeko classifies them together with other gods and devils, though they also noted that Justim and Vicers’ status is much different. Apparently they are responsible for the DSP universe as a whole, not only for a specific world, and probably were like a beginning of everything? That’s why they’re higher than other gods and devils. However, their position is still unclear. 

2. Humans’ world Ruled by: ??? Notable residents: Yonaka, Shinya, Nataka Kurokawa and her classmates, Olivia Description: Implicitly a world based on our modern times. Yonaka’s reactions in Mogeko Castle suggest that her world is rather normal and as magicless as it’s possible, but we also know that different types of dark beings regularly find their way to that place. Some humans can communicate with demons or see... things (for example, Nataka). Judging by Obsolete Dream prologue with Olivia, something bad could happen there?

3. Mogeko Castle Ruled by: Lord Prosciutto/King Mogeko  Notable residents: Mogekos, Moge-ko, Mogekov  Description: The world we’ve seen in Mogeko Castle. In few moments it was clearly implicated that the Castle is in fact the product of Yonaka’s imagination and she can hold full power if she wants (as the Prosciutto ending has shown). A crazy place. Not connected with Satanick’s world (confirmed by Mogeko)

4. The Gray Garden Ruled by: Etihw & Kcalb  Notable residents: the whole TGG cast  Description: The unusual place where angels and demons live together in harmony and the god and devil share power. Probably a very very old world with long history, as the older residents’ memories and the graveyard suggest. However, after the war almost everything was destroyed and now the world begins again. It holds many mysteries. Many. Too many, if you ask me. 

5. The Land of Suns/Flame World  Ruled by: Siralos & Ivlis Notable residents: Igls (up), Emalf, Poemi, Rieta, Vendetto (down) Description: Consists of two parts - the sun heaven and the flame underground. First it was similar to TGG, then Siralos exiled Ivlis. The heaven seems to be a beautiful place full of light while the underground is dark and sad. The real sun never raises there and the only source of light is the red and distant shadow of the holy sun. Hard to tell what is the relationship between angels and demons in this world. I’d say that their relations are hostile yet they’re not in the state of permanent war.

6. Reficul’s World Ruled by: Reficul and Elux Notable residents: Sol, Mars, Mercury, Luna (angels), Sin, Mors, Lzet, Lowrie (originally), Ushio, Mephir, Alibe, Chocolaty, Rene (demons) Description: Unfortunately, Mogeko has never shown Reficul’s world and thus we can’t say much about it. Lowrie states that his homeland is quite dangerous, the demons are most likely very aggressive there. I also think he said that there’s raining a lot? But maybe I’m just dreaming up things. 

7. Pitch Black World Ruled by: Satanick and Fumus Notable residents: too many to count them all... Kurotsuno, Hanten and other characters appearing in Obsolete Dream, Fumus’ angels (eg. Chlomaki, Taffy, Olive, Tsurugigozen), Sayanick’s subordinates (Envi, Meduco, Yagi, Roc, Lec, Crea, Kyou, Hidou wtc.) Description: A big, bloody and grotesque world, full of people with weird ideas. Considering its rulers, it shouldn’t be surprising. It’s a very diverse world, inhabited by demons from different cultures, various ghosts, zombie, shinigami and even humans. The heaven appears to be an idyllic paradise where the rainbow never disappears but the truth is much different and more cruel. Seriously, I could write another essay just for this world... 

8. Wadanohara’s World  Ruled by: depends on the land, it has more than one ruler (the Sea God, Princess Uomi, King Artamos) Notable residents: Wadanohara cast, Poison Bugs cast, Ice Scream cast Description: some people claim that Wadanohara’s world is actually a part of Satanick’s world. The reason is the fact that Tsumuri, the main character of Poison Bugs, appears in WatGBS as well as on early sketches with Pitch Black World characters. Personally, I think it’s just because of ideas development. Apparently Wadanohara’s world is a collection of smaller countries and kingdoms with their own individual history and culture. The main residents are humanoid animals but we can also find there witches and demons. 

9 The Witch World Ruled by: The Great Witch Notable residents: Chlomaki (sometimes), Kaen, Hanahata, Tokinome, Sagan, Bloody Mary Description: The world seen in both Wadanohara game and manga. It’s the hometown of most witches, probably some of them live there permanently. It also has some kind of a school for young witches and wizards. 

10. Flowers World Ruled by: Rosaliya and Liliya Notable residents: Ver (originally), unnamed angel with forget-me-not flowers Description: it never appeared in any series so we don’t have much information concerning this world. From what we know, the god and the devil were used to in good terms until Liliya, despite his name being a Narcissus, hurt Rosaliya and made her leave. After that incident all angels went together with her, being tired of their annoying lord. 

11. Underworld (???) Ruled by: GriRea (?) Notable residents: Sibuna, Shinigami (sometimes?), Nad and Dull?  Description: The world of death, ruled by the queen of dead. Judging by some sketches with Shinigami, their homeland looks like barren land full of rocks. It seems to be guided by Cerberus. 

Honorable mentions: unnamed world ruled by the unnamed black devil and lightning god, “tapir” world ruled by the coffee god and devil, Wonderland, Lavinrac’s kingdom.

THE HEADLESS NUN

This term is used for the very first time in the PILOT. Sherlock refers to a previous case in which Angelo obviously was involved as well.

SHERLOCK: Angelo, headless nun. ANGELO: Ah, now that was a case! Same again? SHERLOCK: If you wouldn’t mind.

At least between Sherlock and Angelo the term 'headless nun' seems to be a secret code for a certain kind of action. 

Going into action - going into acting

On this special occasion: acting like a drunk who is thrown out of a restaurant ... with the addition of a splash of white wine.

VATICAN CAMEOS

Another term that is used as a secret code for a certain kind of action. This time between Sherlock and John in ASIB before Sherock opens the safe where Irene's camera phone is kept ... guarded by a spring-gun.

SHERLOCK (urgently): Vatican cameos.

But this time the meaning is different. The term is meant to be a warning that some kind of deadly danger is about to occur.

Going into action -  going into defense/rescue mode

On this special occasion: Sherlock and John are immediately crouching down for cover. Only a short time before this happens, both Sherlock and Irene are adding a 'splash of color' to prepare themselves for the meeting. Real blood for Sherlock. Lipstick in the shade of blood for Irene.

The definition of CAMEO/S:

a gem, small medallion, statue with a profiled head carved in relief

a small literary or filmic piece

a small theatrical role

The VATICAN:

A small state in the middle of Rome, seat of the Roman Catholic Church, ruled by the Bishop of Rome ... the Pope. The Pope is also the supreme authority of all catholic monasteries and therefore ... of the nuns.

Originally 'Vatican Cameos' is an untold story mentioned in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'

“I must thank you,' said Sherlock Holmes, 'for calling my attention to a case which certainly presents some features of interest. I had observed some newspaper comment at the time, but I was exceedingly preoccupied by that little affair of the Vatican cameos, and in my anxiety to oblige the Pope I lost touch with several interesting English cases.”

VATICAN CAMEOS = A WARNING AGAINST VATICAN PERFORMANCES ?  AGAINST SOMETHING THE 'HEAD OF THE NUNS' ORDERED TO DO ? BUT 'THE HEAD' IS MISSING AND THEREFORE STILL UNKNOWN ?  A GHOST .... AN ANONYMOUS PLAYER ?

HEADLESS NUN & VATICAN CAMEOS ... UNITED

Both terms reappear in the episode 'The sign of three' at John's wedding. Sherlock promises little Archie the picture of a 'headless nun' if he is able to answer the question: how to kill someone in public.

SHERLOCK: Oh, hello again, Archie.  What’s your theory? Get this right and there’s a headless nun in it for you.

Sherlock uses 'vatican cameos' to inform John - without alarming the other wedding guests - that Major Sholto is in mortal danger and about to be murdered.

SHERLOCK: Oh! Ladies and gentlemen, can’t stand it when I finally get the chance to speak for once, Vatican Cameos.  MARY: What did he say? What’s that mean? JOHN: Battle stations. Someone’s gonna die.

The most interesting aspect here is that the main action happens entirely between three Sherlock mirrors:  

'Director of the Mind-Stage' Sherlock tells 'Little Sherlock Mirror' Archie, he will get a 'headless nun' if he is able to deduce how 'Sherlock Ex-Comander of John Mirror' Sholto could be killed in public without anyone noticing it.

'Headless Nuns' in ghost stories:

This kind of character can be found in legends and ghost stories. They are sometimes hauting places, seeking revenge, guarding treasures, bloodthirsty and murderous ... in short - they are the perfect tools for creating fear and terror in ghost stories.

The real roman catholic nuns (x x):

A nun is a woman who lives in a religious community.

She swears an oath to live in chastity and obedience.

She dedicates her life to the greater good she believes in.

She is considered to be a 'Bride of Christ'.

There is a wedding ceremony where she wears bridal white with wreath and veil.

She wears a wedding ring which will be buried with her after death.

After the ceremony she exchanges the bridal robes for a sombre religious habit.

A nun is also called 'sister'

Turning a nun into a ghost story is basically the same thing as turning a sister into a ghost story.

A LITTLE DETOUR - THE DOUBLE MEANING OF WORDS

The creators of Sherlock BBC are known for using word-games with great fondness. Just a few examples (I'm sure there are more):

beech & beach - the Holmes children play on a beach, pebbles on a beach ... or ... looking for somthing buried under a beech tree.  

Welsborough & wells burrow - used as family name ... or ... for creating a well one has to burrow a hole in the ground first.

pals & palls - Mycroft uses the term to describe Sherlock's and John's relationship in TGG  ('since you and he became ... pals')  meaning 'mates/close friends' ... or ...  the dialoge between the ambassador and her husband in TST  ('chess palls after three months/everything palls')  mening 'losing interest/becoming bored'

birds & birds - flying animals (most of them) with feathers ... or ... young women,

Harry & Harriet - brother or sister? sister or brother? Right from the beginning ....

MR.SZIKORA FROM THE EMPY HEARSE

After Sherlock returns from his hiatus John has a visiter at the surgery. An old man with white hair and beard who presents John with three small gifts.

MR. SZIKORA: I run a little shop, just on the corner of Church Street (?). Er, magazines, DVDs. Brought along a few little beauties that might interest you. “Tree Worshippers.” Oh, that’s a corker. It’s very saucy. “British Birds.” Same sort of thing. “The Holy War.” Sounds a bit dry, I know, but there’s a nun with all these holes in her Habit.   

This scene is a canon reference to ACDs 'The Empty House'.  Sherlock Holmes visits Dr.Watson in the disguise of an old man and tries to sell him three books .... 'British birds' (the real feathery ones), 'Catullus' (the roman poet who did actually write a lot of 'saucy' stuff and also poems about  'how to comfort a friend in the death of a loved one') and 'The Holy War' (most likely without the nuns).

In the original story Dr.Watson is fooled by this disguise and doesn't recognise Holmes whereas in Sherlock BBC John tries to pull of the assumed fake wig of his patient because he suspects Sherlock to play a prank on him.   

A second canon reference can be found in Mr.Szikora's statement that his usual PG is Dr. Verner. As told in ACDs story 'The Norwood Builder' ... Dr. Verner is a distant relative of Sherlock Holmes.

A young doctor, named Verner, had purchased my small Kensington practice, and given with astonishingly little demur the highest price that I ventured to ask -- an incident which only explained itself some years later when I found that Verner was a distant relation of Holmes's, and that it was my friend who had really found the money.

A man comes to John's surgery who actually IS Sherlock Holmes in canon but in this adaption Mr.Szikora comes from a person who IS a close relative of Holmes in canon.

Also - Mr.Szikora speaks in a heavy Eastern European accent. I don't know when or where John heard Sherllock speak French to make any comparison. Either way, because of his strange habit and his stiking accent John comes to the conclusion that Mr. Szikora must be fake. John believes that this man is Sherlock in disguise.

JOHN: It’s not as good as your French. Not as good as your French. It’s not even a good disguise, Sherlock!

Sherlock speaking French - or more precisely: John obviously knowing that Sherlock speaks French -  is a third canon referce. Original Sherlock Holmes doesn't only speak French, part of his family comes from France. In ACDs 'The Greek Interpreter' Holmes tells Dr. Watson: '.... my grandmother, who was the sister of Vernet, the French Artist' 

Does this mean that Mr. Szikora is triple-coded as a Holmes?

As mentioned above Mr. Szikora has the appearance of an old man with a beard. This reminds me of another person with a beard. A Person who is also mistaken for Sherlock Holmes. The beard is fake but the person is indeed a Holmes.

THE NUN WITH THE HOLES IN HER HABIT

Nuns wear a special habit.  'HABIT' though is another word with more than just one meaning. It can be: 

a garment

a usual way of behaving

the bodily appearance of someone

a mental attitude of someone

a strong need to use a drug 

This leads of course straight away to HLV where this special word is heavily used - but not for nuns.      

SHERLOCK: There’s every chance that my drug habit might hit the newspapers. The game is on.

MYCROFT: The siren call of old habits.

MYCROFT: You’re a celebrity these days, Sherlock. You can’t afford a drug habit. SHERLOCK : I do not have a drug habit.

What do have 'headless nuns' and 'habits with holes in it' in common?

A person is very hard - if at all - to recognize when the head/the face can't be seen/is hidden. A very important information is missing.

It's the same with 'holes in the habit'. Something is missing. A hidden behaviour. A hidden attitude. Someone is hiding something. Any information not seen is like a black hole for the knowledge. Missing puzzle pieces leave holes in the picture. Under certain circumstances 'not knowing' something - 'having black holes about something' - can be very dangerous. But of course, attempting to fill such 'dark holes of knowledge' can be equally dangerous. And there is someone who never liked not knowing:

SHERLOCK: I don’t know. I don’t like not knowing. Unlike the nicely embellished fictions on your blog, John, real life is rarely so neat. I don’t know who was behind all this, but I will find out, I promise you.

And when Sherlock sets out on his journey to explore his past - his family history - his subconscious mind is looking for a sister .... a faithful one ...

But someone turned the 'sister' into a 'ghost story' ...  a rotten skeleton still with maggots in the eye holes even after more than 100 years ... the cold and terrifying force of the East Wind who plucks the unworthy from the Earth  ... to scare Sherlock off.

A nun is a bride. She wears the white robe of a bride with a veil ere she changes it to black or grey - mostly with a splash of white. A nun is called 'sister'. She has no wordly husband but wears a wedding ring, she believes in a higher purpose and lives in her/for her conviction.

Conviction is a dangerous thing. If it gets to strong - to extreme - it can lead to 'holy wars' ... to  'crusades'. But that must not always involve whole nations or confessions or even a lot of people. It is quite possible that a single person can be on a 'crusade' on its own - for their own private reasons. Misplaced love ... the greater good .... murderous jealousy .....

And the male equivalent of a nun  ... is a Monk.

A nun is called sister.  A monk is called brother.

In MHR a blond woman hides among monks ... but ...

LESTRADE: A blonde woman hiding amongst bald monks? That wouldn’t exactly take Sherlock Holmes!

JIM: No, no, no, no, no, this is too easy. (He buries his head in his hands.) This is too easy.

Sherlock BBC is full  of words and scenes with double meaning (or more), of things that start out in one way and then turn into the opposite. Harry or Harriet - brother or sister - it was this question right from the start. Sherlock got it wrong the first time ...  in the PILOT/ASIP. He assumed Harry to be a brother when she actually is John's sister. In his own family Sherlock is looking for a sister. But it turns out that the sister he finds is actually a part of himself. Which way will the wheel turn next?
