The College was always closed on Wednesdays, so a tradition was started in the 80s to have an irreverent holiday themed parade on w52nd the day before the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. It was meant as a diversion for students too busy or broke to head home for Thanksgiving & was modeled after the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. . . The parade had small floats & sometimes inflated helium balloons that often looked like X-rated Jeff Koons art. A recurring bit was the UES Nanny & Dogwalker Precision Marching Squad “doing routines & bringing POC and the underemployed to the Upper East Side since 2009.” The nannies always had triplet strollers and there was a minimum of 5 dogs per walker. . . The College’s “marching band” was never officially recognized as such. They never wore uniforms (the closest was when they dressed up like the guitar guy from Mad Max Fury Road) & sounded more like subway buskers than drum and bugle or show bands. They always closed out the parade. . . Over the years, the parade evolved to be irreverent but veered away from pejorative depictions. One group tried to satirize the Dutch roots of the College w/a tongue-in-cheek depiction of Sinterklaas & Zwarte Piet. That was denied despite the valid cultural criticism. One feature that was cancelled was a set of floats depicting all of the 5 boroughs. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the Staten Island float w/a student reprising Olivia Luccardi’s ranty depiction of a SI girl on HBO’s Girls, along with the Brooklyn float featuring the Real Housewives off Park Slope featuring mother-daughter Instagrammers (Minstagrammers) doing all sorts of inappropriate activities while throwing bags of kale chips at the crowd.” . The two are an “odd couple” w/Nick being normal, but a bit neurotic, while Bluto (Jake) is a slob wearing cut-off sweats & pocket Ts. . . Jake was a gregarious, larger than life character w/a lot of nefarious connections. He was always the first person one sought if you needed something…exotic, from designer drugs to designer clothing. . . Jake hung out with a crew of older guys who always met up at diners & dicey restaurants downtown. He invited Nick along, but Nick always felt like an anthropologist studying a far off culture. There were 8 regulars in this crew, but only enough personality to go around for one. All were a bit socially awkward & all had simmering anti-social tendencies. There was a lot of complaining & a lot of usage of acronyms & coded lingo peculiar too them. While they all wanted to be cool, nobody in this group was cool. With the exception of two professionals, the ragtag 6 were always broke & complained bitterly about this & their luck w/women. . . Nick was trying to figure out…what in the hell brought these guys together. He asked Jake, but Jake just said: “ah, we just go way back. I’ve known these guys forever.” . . These guys tended to travel a lot & spanned the socioeconomic continuum. They were all socially awkward. They tended to be cheap. They were all dorks. They liked to bicker. Nick’s imagination would get the best of him. Spies? In the drug trade? Cybersecurity? What could it be? . . It becomes clear that Nick & Jake are becoming more & more different. Nick, the neurotic nice guy trying to get the guys to not think in such black & white terms. Jake was an increasingly darker figure indulging in pure id. . .
