Hemitrichia Calyculata” by Nathan Benstead (UK). Winner, Young. “I was walking through my local woodland, inspecting rotten logs and sticks last winter, when I came across a log covered in slime mold fruiting bodies or sporangia. I set up my camera gear and focused on a small cluster amongst the moss.” My Modern Met

Note
just gotta say i saw the hemitrichia serpula post and your tag about how it had the visual consistency of canned spaghetti and i just. thank you for putting words to the very visceral feeling of looking at that pictture. do you know a lot about fungi? whats your favorite?
i wouldnt say i know a ton about fungi outside of just absorbing facts by having a really good memory and a lot of autistic friends
like the hemitrichia serpula is a slime mold and slime molds are distinct from fungi. and i know an artist (who i would share with you, but they don't currently have a public website) who does art all about biology and they did like a whole publication about slime molds. last year they told me about how there are actually domesticated species of slime molds, and gave me one to take care of like a little pet. mine had a little too much to eat and fruited and promptly died (and when this happens you need to dispose of them in a particular way so you dont contaminate wild slime mold populations or other ecosystems)
out of fungi tho, i do like lace fungi in particular. i like her dress
Tumblr media
and here's a sculpture i made based off the lattice shape of the lace fungus:
Tumblr media
this was like the first sculpture i ever made and it is not so good but it does hold a special place in my heart and i do still have it. it looms over my bed at my mom's house

Hemitrichia slime mould. Can't narrow down exact species because they all look the same until they fruit.

Among the winning images of the Close-Up Photographer of the Year contest, a frilly slime mold stems from leaves, elegant insects splay colorful wings, and microscopic patterns create vivid abstractions. Now in its fourth year, the competition attracted more than 9,000 entries from 54 countries.
The overall winner of this year’s competition was captured by Samantha Stephens and glimpses two tiny amphibians trapped inside a carnivorous plant. She explains, “typically, these plants feast on invertebrates such as moths and flies, but recently, researchers at the Algonquin Wildlife Research Station discovered a surprising new item on the plant’s menu: juvenile Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum).” It was a timely capture; by the following day, the creatures had sunk to the bottom of the pitcher.
See some of our favorite captures below, and visit the contest’s website to view the Top 100 photographs of the year.

[ID: A photograph of a pretzel slime mold on a blackened log. The slime mold is golden red-brown in color, and looks like interconnected mini-pretzels sitting on top of the dark wood. End ID.]
