Fandom and Ships

In the last couple of weeks, we have seen the number of fics in the Bucktommy tag skyrocket. Which is pretty exciting and amazing and a clear sign of how very excited the fandom is about this development. But of course there is also backlash, mostly from people who suddenly see their preferred ship in danger. (Honestly, when has a canon ship ever stopped fandom from shipping the people involved with other people instead?)

It's expected that some Buddie fans are disappointed. It's also expected that they would lash out (though, I had hoped people could for once remember there are adults and just because everyone is anonymous in online spaces doesn't mean there aren't people sitting behind those keyboards getting hurt by baseless accusation of racism and other things). I should probably not be surprised they are now also using the low engagement we have always seen with Henren as a weapon.

So, let's talk about fandom and ships.

There is no question that there has since season 2 always been the most engagement with Buddie content in this fandom as a whole. People saw the chemistry between Buck and Eddie and ran with it. Compared to that, the canon couples have all barely any content.

But if you look at any fandom at any point in time, there is a clear pattern between canon and fanon ships. There are only very few select fandoms where canon couples ever got a lot of engagement. Of the various fandoms I've been part of, I can only think of one at the top of my head.

I think the reasons are pretty simple. 

First of all, the fans get that couple on their screen pretty regularly. They don't have to wish and hope for it, don't have to search for the little details that will validate their headcanon. They don't have to go into fandom spaces to find content for that ship. They can just lean back without any kind of effort and enjoy this ship right on their screen.

And then second, those who do create fan content for those canon ships have to balance a very fine line. What of the canon facts will they dare to contradict to create their own content in fanfiction? (Fanart, videos, gif-sets are probably a little easier there.) Where and when do they deviate from canon? Is there even anything they feel is missing from canon that they want to see in fan work? Do they want to risk contradicting anything that will be established in canon later on? Usually, this conundrum leads mostly to short fics about missing scenes, but nothing truly epic. At least not as long as the there is new source material fairly regularly.

People creating content for purely fanon ships don't need to bother with most of those questions. Because they are deviating from canon anyway. It doesn't matter much then how far they go with that. Everything canon that comes later will just be dismissed with a shrug. Everything canon that happened previously and they don't like can be dismissed just as easily because they are already dismissing parts of it.

Then there is a clear divide between hetero, maleslash and femslash content, no matter if canon or fanon. There are probably people much better suited to get into the gritty little details about that. I'll just share some thoughts I have about any of those ships in this fandom because of my experience as a fanfiction author.

I've always been writing and telling stories. And I started writing fanfiction pretty early on, too, because I found a lot of freedom there in the content and relationships I could explore. Looking back, I've always mostly written maleslash. But I've also always had hetero and femslash pairs in my works. Have had works that focus solely on those pairs.

I know as a teenager I wrote mostly maleslash because I just got a lot of engagement for that. And back then that was a great motivator to publish my fanfiction. It's not my motivation to publish now anymore and it's never been my motivation to write at all. So there are some stories about hetero or femslash couples on my hard drive that I just never published back then.

For 9-1-1, I've been writing many of the ships there are. More than once I focused on characters who don't get much attention otherwise, not even in canon. I have some femslash stories published, most of them Henren. They don't get many klicks. And the comments I get are from friends I actively talk to very often who just read about anything I publish. Or from some very dedicated readers who I seem to have enamored enough with my writing that they'll follow me into pretty much any rabbit hole, I think.

I like Buck and Eddie a lot as characters. I adore Christopher. So, I enjoy creating for them a lot. But I also enjoy creating for the other characters and I'm scratching that itch regularly. But no matter the reason for why I write (because the stories are just in my head and the only way to get them out is to write them down), sharing what I create is more fun when I'm finding engagement over it. So, there are stories that are outlined or even fully written who I'll maybe never publish.

Where were all those Buddie fans in the past who now complain about the missing content for Henren? Where was their support for those who have written Henren all along only to be practically talking into a void? (Right, just as it was never about queer representation for some people, it was never about Henren either. No matter what they say now. They are just searching for the next thing the mob might be latch onto so they can pretend they are right.)

- I love everything made by @eddiediaaz. I can’t choose only one gifset. Everything Alie makes is so incredibly beautiful. Her coloring, the scenes, the typography, 1000% every damn time ! The creativity is unmatched ! Absolute perfection ✨ This buddie gifset is such a perfect example of her talent.

Hi, so I am more and more convinced that Buddie won't become canon which breaks my heart. Any advice on how to love this pairing despite the writers setting up something so brilliantly to not follow through? Fanfics, fanart, gifs and videos are beautiful and help a lot, but I feel kind of hopeless because of where we are at and heading, and would really like to resurrect my love for the Buddie ship.

If that’s what you believe, that is totally legit. I’m not there yet, I might be one day, but I can certainly understand the people who are and this blog is a fully accepting environment for everyone, no matter where you happen to be.

I don’t really have advice other than to say that I really believe fandom should make us happy. Life is hard enough. Genuinely, life is the ultimate struggle, and to me fandom is the happy bubble that’s meant to revitalize and strengthen us by giving us an injection of joy. Fandom shouldn’t be a chore, and it shouldn’t make us sad. So that’s the primary goal in my book, to take care of yourself and make sure you’re doing good.

If fandom does make us sad, I guess there are a couple of things we can try and do, that I can think of off the top of my head:

One is to maybe decide to leave a specific fandom if the source material makes us that unhappy and we don’t believe that might change at some point. That’s legit, and it’s a form of self care.

Another option is to find an additional fandom, get our joy from that one, making what the former fandom couldn’t give us into something that takes us less space in our fandom experience. This is probably for when we’re not happy, but we think there might be a chance for things to get better, or when there’s enough good in this specific fandom that we don’t wanna walk away from it completely.

And then a third option is figure out if there is a way for us to be content even if the source material doesn’t give us what we wanted from it, ever. I think that’s where I personally am at whenever I consider the possibility that Buddie might not become canon. I focus on the fact that I love the show overall. Henren, Madney, Bathena, they make me happy as well, as does the Buckley-Diaz family even in its semi-canon-no-romance form. I don’t wanna throw all that good away even if I never get the canon Buddie that I think we (and Buddifer) deserve. So I focus on what I love, and I also personally have come to realize that in my head, Buddie will always come together, even if it doesn’t happen on our screen. It’ll just happen in a “fill in the blanks” kind of way. ‘Coz I just can’t believe Buck and Eddie wouldn’t eventually get together. It’s not just fic and fanart. It’s just their truth in my mind. It’s the natural progression to what canon has shown us of them, so... it is canon to me, no matter what.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve never really had hope for buddie to be confirmed in the first place. Like I do ship them and if they did I would be happily surprised but really it’s just never something I’ve entertained as a possibility and I don’t know where the people who believe it will happen have been but we just don’t get ships like this imo.Maybe there’s a few exceptions even if I can’t think about this right now but when a character’s introduced as straight or nothing has been said so we assume straight and then fandom ships them with an equally assumed straight person the show and networks and all that don’t want them together because they’re ‘normal straight people’. Like in LS from the beginning TK’s introduced with a bf he wants to propose to, they don’t lose their normal character since that was him from the start. Also if it’s acknowledged that all the buddie moments were building up to a romantic relationship then it sheds light on other similar relationships in other shows or films that we were ridiculed for shipping when really it’s not so different. I really don’t know if I got my point across here and I’m sorry this got so long winded, maybe I’m just a cynic but I think my buddie dreams will have to be contented with fanart and fic.

It's definitely not just you who has felt that way, lol. We hear it all the time, just more aggressively. To expand on what you said, the biggest piece of "evidence" in favor of this argument is that it's been six seasons and neither one's sexuality has been altered or allowed to evolve in the slightest. And it's not the opportunity wasn't there, right? Maddie and her "boy crush on Eddie" remark or saying she wouldn't want Josh to date her little brother. Then TK (falsely) assuming Buck was being flirtatious. Tim (he was the main show runner those years) could have said any of that meant something moving forward (maybe a "Buck is canonically bi, but we haven't explored that part of his story...we're waiting 'til it feels appropriate"), but the only part he addressed was the TK thing, and he connected to Tarlos since Carlos wasn't physically present. Compare that to Nancy becoming the first bi character of the 911verse. She came out while in a relationship with Mateo. She is still in that same relationship now. The show isn't trying to "prove" she's bisexual by having her hook up with or date a woman. It's just a part of who she is. And then there's the fact that all four (technically five, with David) queer men of the 911 verse (Michael, Josh, TK, Carlos) are written as gay, not bi. Tim & co. appear to have some *opinions* (thus far) about bi men, it seems. If they date a woman? Straight. Date a man? Not into women (never were). I will continue to say, though, that people are giving the network too much grief. The canon couples very rarely do anything intimate as the seasons progress, with Henren as the outlier because 6x06 was a flashback, so *if* anyone with influence was concerned about the optics, Tim has an "excuse" not to push things too far - that's not what the focus is anymore. And even *if* someone at the network was all "idk about this :/" that's still on Tim for dodging the discussion six years in. Get out ahead of it and the message would have been received much sooner - if you're against even one of these guys getting with a dude...this ain't the show you should be watching. Move along. (Tim has no problem putting LS fandom down, so I don't see why he'd act different with OG. TBH, it's either his own biases about Buck and Eddie as men that is keeping him from making them canon or it's similar to his reaction when the Tarlos fandom "complains" - he knows what's gonna happen if Buddie goes canon; they will dominate the discussion - he doesn't want the fandom giving their opinions or asking for content more than they do already.)

Not to kick a hornets nest but I really really really need 911 fandom to understand that buddie is not being queerbaited lmao. The show is not advertising itself as being the buddie show - it is not putting out ads or tweets or anything that implies “if you watch 911 maybe buddie will become canon oooh 👀👀👀”

The fandom loves buddie (I do too) and so when people find themselves drawn into the show, it’s majorly bc of buddie gifsets/fanart/fanfic. Then they watch the show, which is an Ensemble Show (not the Buck Show, not the Buddie Show), and feel cheated bc the fandom is so buddie-centered

I have seen people straight up say 911 is bad lgbt rep bc buddie isn’t canon as if Henren and Michael and David aren’t right there !!! Not to mention all the characters in the emergencies that are queer!

Please learn the difference between “I want this to be canon, but it’s not, and I’m upset about that” and “the show is actively promoting a gay relationship that they have no intention of making canon.”

And I finally finished this project! A tiny "comic"(?) more companion art than comic! This should go in pair with my work A whisper of smoke, and today it's time to celebrate the (belated) one year anniversary of that mammoth of a story. (It was exactly a month ago!)

In my head, but I'm not really sure if I was able to, this should have been Buck's pov of the first chapter of the story. (Yeah you can scream in my face as much as you want)
