last day @voltashow loved working with @gibbonsandnicholas @voltashow - One of my works ‘History of time’ 9 photogenic drawings + erased paintings created by the direct imprint of specimens from the earliest plants on earth. The plants were foraged around the world and grown in controlled atmospheres dating back to the beginning of time. This work speaks to the fragility of our ecosystems. Made in collaboration with the Henry Fox Talbot Museum and The School of Science, UCD. #basel #voltabasel #siobhánmcdonald #henryfoxtalbot @voltashow #irishart #contempoaryart #photography #artbasel https://www.instagram.com/p/ByvA2t0nq1C/?igshid=1pjnc2pkthbie

House across the river. “In the summer of 1835 I made in this way a great number of representations of my house in the country, which is well suited to the purpose, from its ancient and remarkable architecture. And this building I believe to be the first that was ever yet known to have drawn its own picture.” ~ (Henry Fox Talbot, 1839) Leica M 246, Summilux, 35mm #leicausa #leica #leicam246 #leicamonochrome #bnw_universe #insta_bw #bwmasters #excellent_bnw #igblacknwhite #bnw_planet #bnw_magazine #bnw_globe #bnw_of_our_world #top_bnw #bw_photooftheday #bw_crew #lowell #lowellma #thisislowell #henryfoxtalbot (at Lowell, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTwwTjeFlsn/?utm_medium=tumblr

#talbot #williamhenryfoxtalbot #henryfoxtalbot #foxtalbot #firstnegative #historyofthenegative #historyofthephotography #photographyhistory #photographyhistoryknowledge #photohistory #england #historiadelafotografía #historiafotografia #laprimerafotografia #londres #sociedadsecretadefotografia #royalinstitution #historiamundial #fotografíahistórica #historicphotography #1839 #1835 (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE3UkJZDwTa/?igshid=pznww4tb7emz

The Pencil of Nature
Last weeks reading was The Pencil of Nature by Henry Fox Talbot. Talbot starts off by talking us through his experiments with photography at it's earliest stage, experimenting with the properties of different materials and chemicals. Talbot then presents us with a series of his images which vary from forms of documentation, to his experimentations with photography as an art form.
There were many other individuals working on the invention of photography at the same time as Talbot, suggesting that photography was something humankind wanted, not just something one individual was interested in. Another pioneer of Photography was Louis Daguerre who invented the Daguerreotype but, whilst it was more detailed than Talbot's method, Talbot had an edge as he had managed to discover a way of creating negatives. This meant he was able to create multiple copies of his images, therefore introducing the possibility of a commercial use for photography.
Part of the joy of reading this text was down to the fact that Talbot was so excited and enthusiastic about Photography, and reading anything by somebody who absolutely loves what they are writing about is always a pleasure. Also, there was something very contemporary about Talbot's photographs. It seemed as though he had the same desire to document the world around him as we have now.
