#talbot #williamhenryfoxtalbot #henryfoxtalbot #foxtalbot #firstnegative #historyofthenegative #historyofthephotography #photographyhistory #photographyhistoryknowledge #photohistory #england #historiadelafotografía #historiafotografia #laprimerafotografia #londres #sociedadsecretadefotografia #royalinstitution #historiamundial #fotografíahistórica #historicphotography #1839 #1835 (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE3UkJZDwTa/?igshid=pznww4tb7emz

Today we make an exception to the Not In Newhall rule to celebrate the 221st birthday of William Henry Fox Talbot, English chemist, linguist, mathematician, archaeologist, and pioneer photographer, who was born on February 11, 1800. Talbot invented the photogenic drawing and the calotype and salted paper print processes, produced the first publication that contained photographs, and created some of the most beautiful masterpieces of early photography. His later work on photomechanical printing led to the development of the photogravure. Happy Birthday, Henry. . Downside Photo Archive
This week one of our volunteers is working to sort out a vast section of our photographic archives, as yet untouched. The Downside photographic collections form a large part of the archives here, and are one of the most significant portions as well. Thousands of images, the earliest from 1857 and rumoured to have been taken by Henry Fox Talbot, highlight the unique history of our site.

With this week's work we are aiming to be able to start making a catalogue of our images, and to understand the depth of the collection. We will also have the ability to share more images and we hope to be able to find more pictures of the development of Downside over the last 150 years.

Many of the photos we are working through now relate to pupils from the school from 1900-1930, and offer a rich insight into boarding school life at that time. Pictures of sporting events and plays are prominent in the collection, as are pictures of the Officer Training Corps and exercises they were involved in. Above is a photo of soldiers, possibly with some ex-Downside pupils among them.

We have also unearthed many images of Downside dinners, when Old Gregorians would gather, a tradition which still goes on today. The image above has no date, but judging by the monks attending it must have been in the 1930's. Altogether, our photographic archive is a rich history of Downside, much of which is still waiting to be discovered.
To find our more about the Downside Archives visit our website. http://www.downside.co.uk/downside-library/about-the-archives-and-library/

William Henry Fox Talbot (British, 1800-1877) “Henrietta Horatia Maria Feilding”, 1845; Calotype
Selected by: Ashley Harte
William Henry Fox Talbot is by far one of the most important figures in the world of photography. Responsible for the creation of the calotype, a paper negative process that opened the door to photographic advancements all over the world, Talbot is known as one of the fathers of photography. While he is best known for his invention, he is also credited with a number of noteworthy photographs from the early days of the photographic process. This image, Henrietta Horatia Maria Feilding was made it 1845 and is one of the first formal portraits to be made using the calotype process. Pictured in the image is Talbot’s half sister Henrietta, who is seen here sitting sideways in a chair reading a book. Due to the paper negative process that was calotypes, the image is peeled away along the edges, leaving an uneven black border that works to frame the figure seated on a white backdrop. The figure is composed in the center of the frame, and unexpectedly shows no signs of motion as was common in many early portraits due to the length of exposure time required. In earlier works by Talbot figures are seen, though there are few before this that show a figure as the central subject of the image. This advancement makes this photograph extremely important to the history of photography and the extremely fast advancements that were being made at this time. Along with being an integral part of the history of photography, this image is also extremely beautiful. Henrietta looks down at her book with calm intent, her black dress and hair show off her exquisite silhouette to the viewer, while her long neck and delicate facial structure are featured in the profile framing. Possibly the most beautiful part of this image is Henrietta’s hand. Her arms rests on the back of the chair, leaving her hand to dangle, and gentle caress the page of the book. This image is serene, and leaves the viewer feeling both calm and content, feelings that would not be expected of an image made with such a delicate process at such a difficult time to produce images of this type.
