BOOK REVIEW
The Minus-One Club Kekla Magoon Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) @henryholt Publication date : January 24, 2023
Tumblr media
After receiving a mysterious note in his high school locker , Kermit meets the members of the Minus-One Club, a group of teenagers who lost someone, just like him. Meeting them helps the young man dealing with tragedy, as things are suffocating at home, because of overprotective parents. Kermit meets Matt, and the friendship turns into love.
The Minus-One Club is a moving and emotional young adult novel. Fifteen-year-old Kermit Sanders is deeply wounded by grief after losing his big sister in a tragic car accident. The Minus-One Club is the story of a transformation, as Kermit loses his last drops of childhood innocence. Emotional, mental and spiritual changes are rooted deeply in Kermit’s story.
Kekla Magoon wrote a powerful novel, raising strong and difficult topics. Death, grief, alcoholism, suicide, fear of rejection. Kermit’s homosexuality discovery is at the heart of the novel. His relationship with Matt is sweet, but also ingrained in fear. Kermit’s family is really religious, and the teenager knows he will never be accepted for who he really is.
The Minus-One Club is a good novel. You jump easily from smile to tears. I loved the evolution of the story, and how all the characters evolved. Even if Kermit is the main character, the secondary cast also plays an active part in the story. They all grow and learn from their shared experience.

"The Wedding People" by Alison Espach - Book Review @HenryHolt @MacmillanUSA @AlisonEspach #TheWeddingPeople #BookReview #MustRead
“All we want is permission to stand there naked and be our damned selves.”In a word….FABULOUS! This novel will definitely appear on my best of 2024 list! How can a novel that begins with the protagonist in such a depressed state that she intends to commit suicide – turn out to be…. uplifting? Well I don’t know how the author managed it, but she did. This novel walks a fine line between literary…

If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir by John Stamos #audiobookreview #bookreview #memoir #Hollywood #Television #HenryHolt #MacMillanAudio
I remember #JohnStamos from #GeneralHospital, yet he's had a 40-year career since then. #Ifyouwouldhavetoldme is a #memoir that's interesting and inciteful if you're a fan. #bookreview #henryholt #fullhouse #ER #broadway #newbooks #bargainsleuth
If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad’s fast-food joint that one day he’d be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he’d be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might’ve asked, “You want fries with that?”John burst onto the scene in General Hospital, propelling him into the teen idol stratosphere, a place…

"I understood a little better why Mami's rhythm never seemed all the way right in America, why she could love this place I'd never seen as fiercely as I love Chicago. There are different magics to these lands, and maybe there's nothing worse than being separated from the magic you love best." Pilar Ramirez and the Curse of San Zenon by Julian Randall was a magical tale filled with magic, monsters, family, and Dominican history. It was fast paced and jumped right into the action from the start. I loved how it tackled Dominican history, especially the era of Trujillo and it was full of Dominican folklore. I love a good ciguapa and cucitos story and this one did not disappoint. This was also an ode to Dominican revolutionaries. I caught the subtle nod to the Mirabal sisters aka The Mariposas and the celebration of Dominican women as community leaders and keepers of the history. It was a reminder that love of family keeps the homeland alive in the heart. It also explains why immigrant communities will always be tethered to their native soils. It was also nice to see Pilar, a middle schooler recognize how tourism can mirror colonialism I. The ways that it erases people and their histories with oppression. I was extra happy to see the Afro-Latinx representation. The gorgeous cover made me smile. Even though this was the second book in the series, it is easy to follow and never gets confusing. If you love Latinx stories that are full of fantasy, family and folklore, here's some recommendations to read after this series: 🧿 Sal & Gabby Break the Universe series- Carlos Hernandez 🧿 The Storm Runner series- J.C. Cervantes 🧿 Charlie Hernandez Mythic Collection series- Ryan Calejo 🧿 The Witchlings series- Claribel Ortega Thanks to @henryholt and @hearourvoices for the gifted copy and opportunity to be on tour for this one. Julian Randall is an author I'm excited to read more from in the future. I hope to see this series in more classrooms and libraries soon. #PilarRamirezandtheCurseofZenon #JulianRandall #HearOurVoicesTours #bookrecommendation #bookreview #bookstagram #IGreads #bookworm #Dominican #fantasy #middle grade #bookstagrammer #latinxbooks #afrolatina https://www.instagram.com/p/CpI4Q8jP2qH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#QOTD: Do you have any reading goals for 2020? #AOTD: I’ve set my reading goal at 30 books again on Goodreads, even though I didn’t manage it in 2019 🙈 I also want to read more books than I buy! I’m more dedicated to this goal, and even have a whole spreadsheet ready to keep track (so far I’ve bought 2 and read 0 😅) And my last goal is to read more children’s classics! I own a lot of them but most I’ve never read, so I want to rectify that!✨ #childrenofbloodandbone #tomiadeyemi #henryholt #bookcover #bookcoverart #yalit #yabooks #yabookstagrammer #yafantasy #bookgoals #bookgoals2020 #readinggoals #readinggoals2020 #bookban #booksbooksbooks #bookdragon https://www.instagram.com/p/B7HDxRqguyy/?igshid=1ltywxlla6tnb

💡Sunday Spotlight. Something a little different than what you normally see in this space. REVIEW 👉🏿The Beijing Duck House is the Han family restaurant and the centerpiece of this novel about a dysfunctional family. Although dysfunction reigns, humor is never far from the page and the crazy mysterious Uncle Pang is a shadowy gangster type who seemingly has his hand in everything as the ultimate puppet master. Bobby Han is the patriarch of the family and his dream of a Chinese restaurant in America comes to fruition in Rockville, MD. Bobby has two sons, Jimmy and Johnny who have two very different ideas about furthering the reach and influence of the Beijing Duck House while keeping the Han family name in high esteem in the MD area.
Jimmy wants out, he has worked in the family business since he was a teen and is now known as Little Boss. He wants to implement his own vision and agenda and wants his own restaurant. Johnny is more interested in being seen and recognized as a VIP, he doesn’t have much tolerance for the nuts and bolts aspect of running a restaurant. Jimmy plots his moves which goes astray, and the ensuing fallout threatens to tear the family completely apart.
This all leads to a raucous conclusion to a novel that has exposed the reader to a chaotic restaurant scene, Chinese family dynamics, including inter-generational conflict and astute witty observations concerning immigrant life as opposed to Native American life.
“Americans. They believed a strong marriage came from knowing their partner’s every shadowy thought. But it was knowing too much that killed love. A strong marriage came when the wedded stopped trying to plumb their partner’s depths. Life became easier when one passed the years with an amiable stranger and not a mirror that reflected back all of one’s flaws.”
There are themes that are universal across cultures, especially dealing with immigrant experiences. A lot going on in this novel that is always busy and those tidbits of wittiness buttress the fast paced doings of the Han family along with their network of restaurant associates and customers. And, of course the ever present Uncle Pang keeps this story high above the boredom line. A big thank you to Netgalley and Henry Holt&Co. for an advanced DRC. Book is out now. ♦️♣️➕
