For too long you have pressed the world into your baking tins, you gourmet,
you baker and confectioner. But you are not sweet yourself, everything is supposed to taste good for you alone, so your tables can overflow, for your
insatiable stomachs. One must get to know you, you lover of sweets, how bitter
you are when the dough is not as pliable as your greedy palate would like. For
in the one hand you have your baking tin and in the other hand sword, dagger,
canons, poison, gas and martyrs are poised to force the recalcitrant dough into
submission.
Otto Freundlich, quoted in Marcuse, 'Society as a Work of Art' (1967)

Lugano Ch QF: Otto Virtanen [2] def. Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 6-2 Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
Although O. Virtanen had a slightly shaky setup to the match, his confidence in his groundstrokes overwhelmed P-H. Herbert throughout the match with his aggression, oftentimes firing in some drop shots or trying to engage the latter in a net exchange in between. This somehow worked in the Finn's favor, as he survived one break point in the first game while creating 9 break points, converting 33% of them while leaving P-H. Herbert a little to no room to execute his stuff as a result of being out-paced. With the latter being unable to create or convert his chances, it was safe to say that the second seed controlled the flow from start to finish, speedrunning toward the end of the match while keeping his rhythm alive.
In addition, O. Virtanen's service game got even firmer as this match progressed. Despite scoring 3 less aces than the French second seed, his groundstrokes and some unreturned serves helped him to stand out through his first serves by 5%, with a 80% winning percentage that assisted his domination. P-H. Herbert's subpar second-serve level was then confirmed through the above statistics as he double-faulted twice more times than O. Virtanen (6 to 3), which resulted in his second serve percentage waning to 23%, 41% lesser than O. Virtanen.
Rudolf Molleker awaits in the semifinals as he defeated Gijs Brouwer 6-4, 7-6(4) earlier that day (local time). Knowing both players indoors, especially with their explosive service games, its execution and their groundstrokes will be predominantly tested in this match, with their pacing playing a significant role in how they executed their shots later on. This could be one of the most competitive matches of the day, which became one of the reasons behind the excitement of tomorrow's play in general!
