A narrow antique copper tub is a handsome, albeit unusual space saver. The bath has been slightly raised above ground level to show it to greater effect, and the tiles have been continued up over the edge of the platform.

The Hexagon House Hotel, Mineral Wells, Texas,

This unique four-story, hexagonal structure was designed to optimize airflow throughout its 30 rooms, which made it popular in the hot Texas climate. It was also among the first hotels in the town to feature rooms lit by electricity. 

It was constructed of long-leaf yellow pine; the exterior was cypress siding, and the roof was covered with hand-split cypress shingles. The interior was of "Heart of Pine" (The hardest that could be found) wood.

All the stone work was done by two English stone-masons. The building was constructed with pegs and square nails.

The four staircases inside spiraled through the five floors.

The lobby floor was covered with hexagon-shaped tan, brown and blue tiles.

The rooms were hexagon-shaped with a bath between every two rooms. 

Construction was started in 1895 and completed in 1897. The building was dismantled in 1959 for its building materials.

So this was inspired by the Exodan ships in Becky Chambers' Record of a Spaceborn Few and how they're laid out in recursive hexagons. I kind of just did it to see if I could, and started thinking architecturally / city planner style, so things aren't necessarily how they're described in the book, but how I would want a utopian nested hex city. I put in actual doors in the residential areas which was maybe unnecessary. It doesn't include manufacturing really, and I'm not totally sure where education goes, but there's some flexibility for a lot of things under the "retail" category. I preferred to make it all symmetrical rather than making district centers different. There could maybe be a bigger park around the Center, for composting, instead of "administration", which a society with internet may not need actual rooms for. Instead of handwaving that there's a transport level above this, I specifically tried to lay out a way to walk/ride through from any place to another, with some consideration for privacy, although sometimes traffic will go through your yard. Arguably there could be a 7th scale level, but I'm not going to torture InDesign any more.

The smallest unit is the hexagonal room. Homes are 5 rooms (sometimes 1 or 4 depending on throughway placement) and a half bath around a living room, which has a hallway going to the center of each hex. Hexes are made up of 6 homes around a yard and eating area with a kitchen in the middle, with households taking turns making one big 30 person meal a day. There are six hexes in a neighborhood around each park, and each park has a gym, pool, and public bath center servicing about 180 people. Six neighborhoods surround each district with shops, public spaces, services, and a clinic in the center for around 1080 people. The districts surround an administrative center, and death services in the middle. The whole ship houses around 6500 people.

Skateboard Wall Tiles are Flipped for Exciting New Table and Surface Designs

Several of SkateOrDesign’s recycled skateboard wall tile styles have been flipped and applied to table top and counter surfaces in order to create exciting new sustainable surface options. “Well, maybe they were not “flipped” exactly” cautioned SkateOrDesign designer, Jason Podlaski, “but they certainly were rotated 90° from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.”

Tile designs such as the Skate Hex Tile and Skateboard Subway Tile can be used on a surface and the surface texture can be modified by changing the scale of the tile. Due to the contours of the skateboard material, our table tops are rarely dead flat, instead they feature a slight scalloped effect across the surface that varies based on the tile size used. For larger size tiles, like our 7” Split Hex, the scalloped “waves” on the surface are at a 3 1/2” width and about a 3/32” height differential from the highest to lowest points on the surface. By using smaller tile sizes, like our 4” Split Hex Tile, the height differential can be greatly reduced and result is a much flatter surface overall. You can see this illustrated in the images below.

This custom countertop / Housing for a large back bar refrigerator at a restaurant in Philadelphia uses small scale 4” Split Hex tiles for the top surface. The small scale tiles lay very flat and can be made completely flat by coating with epoxy.

A new table edge option is also now available. In addition to our original knife edge design or edging with a molding material such as reclaimed wood, we now offer a wrapped edge detail in which the top surface can mitered and seamlessly wrapped around the side to create a squared edge detail that can be 1” to several inches.
