Silver blinked away the static at the corners of his vision, dimly aware of the blood coating his upper lip. His breath caught in a cough, the strange atmosphere of the Ghost gym clogging his lungs and enveloping his body like an unwelcome embrace. Hazy red eyes blinked in the fog, and he could hear Ruby’s ragged breaths as she tried to stay standing. 

They both knew the stakes if she were to fall. 

The cloying smoke made it hard to speak, but he pushed through it, feeling needles slide down his spine with the effort. “Ruby – confusion!” 

The Slowpoke seemed to need no instructions, and he could see her outline in the fog generating a cloud of pink energy. He readied a super potion, knowing she’d need one soon. He watched as her frame launched the attack–

And then… nothing. 

Where…? Silver, all at once, became aware of the pure, utter silence in the arena. The fog did not move, not even in the flickering of the candlelight. He tried to look up from Ruby’s silhouette, to look at Morty, but every cell in his body buzzed with one instinct: 

Play dead.

There was a sudden explosion, forcing him back into the present as he was flung backwards from the spot he’d been perched at. His back smacked against a pillar, forcing the breath out of him, but the energy continued past him, rattling the remaining structures within the shrine. He let out a few coughs as he forced his aching joints to rise, and he put a hand over his chest. 

Something wasn’t right. He could feel it. 

Maybe it was the static in the air, or the lack of cackling. Maybe it was the dust kicked up from the center of the arena, mixed with the gym’s natural fog. Maybe it was the sudden heaviness of the pokeballs Silver kept securely tucked under his coat. Or maybe it was the familiar sensation of a ghostly spike stabbing through his brain, forcing him back to his knees, head in his hands. 

Silver forced his hand down, ignoring the bits of hair that went with it. He shoved himself up, propping up against a pillar. It didn’t matter. His pokemon could survive a critical hit, even a super effective one. They weren’t weak. 

The sentence rang hollow in his head. 

He just had to find Ruby and heal her. League rules stated that Morty couldn’t attack again until the gym leader verified his safety. She just had to last out to finish out the battle. Distantly, he felt Beryl’s pokeball rattle, but Silver shushed him. 

Silver tried Ruby’s recall, but her ball stayed dim, the center blinking at him, as if it were confused. Figures. With a huff, he approached the main arena. Even if he flew, she was sturdier. 

The center was decimated. With how fiercely Citrine, Beryl, and Ruby fought, it was a given. But… his eyes flicked around. He went to take a step, but he stopped short. To his right… 

Silver felt himself lurch towards her, tripping over his feet. He readjusted, but still all but collapsed as he knelt before his pokemon’s prone form. Gently, carefully, he gathered her into his arms, mindful of her stump out of habit. Her body was unnaturally warm, burnt from the strength of the spectral energy launched at her. 

Beryl broke from his pokeball as Silver lowered his head over her cradled body. The Croconaw let out a grunt, likely feeling his own injuries, but he stared down the Gengar in Silver’s stead. He didn’t need commands. Morty wouldn’t stop, anyway.

The sounds of the two fighting hardly registered in Silver’s mind.  All he could focus on was the dull feeling of his Slowpoke going cold in his arms.

Ruby was buried behind her well. It took hours to walk back to Azalea town, hours that his screaming body did not want to handle. His living team had, of course, been healed at the pokemon center, but… he had to keep going. He couldn’t stop.

Only weak things couldn’t continue. That was why… 

He shook his head. Her final resting place was to lay alongside her favorite flowers. He didn’t know why he cared. “She was weak,” Silver murmured, and Beryl leveled him with a look. He was too tired to try and understand, though. After a moment, the Croconaw grunted, tugging his sleeve.

Time to go.

So, with the whole reddit business, my posts are most likely not going to be as accessible anymore. Which is fine for most of my stuff, but I want to preserve this one post in particular (with a few tweaks here and there).

HeartGold & SoulSilver grinding tips & resources

The johto games are infamously grindy, here are a few resources and tips to help make the grindier bits go much smoother.

Exp grinding

This guide is insanely helpful, and doesn't get shared nearly often enough. It tells you all the best spots to grind for the entire game (including kanto). Also, HeartGold usually has better exp yield than SoulSilver, due to the version exclusive pokemon in each game. This guide is genuinely a godsend.

Game corner coin grinding

Voltorbflip.com. You just punch in the number of points and voltorbs in each row/column, and it determines the best card for you to flip. Make sure you put everything in correctly, if you input something wrong it could very well put you in a bad position, but it's still an incredibly useful tool.

Step grinding (Friendship, daycare, etc.)

Morty's gym. You can literally just hold up after you enter the gym and it'll walk infinitely, so you can do anything else with the absolute minimum attention paid to the game. Before that, you can run/bike up and down between Route 30 and the northwesternmost house in Cherrygrove.

P.S. remember you can call the daycare lady to check how many levels your pokemon has gained, to make sure you don't accidentally overlevel and lose out on an important move or something. If fly isn't unlocked yet, it's best to head there a level or 2 early, just in case the steps to get there end up leveling it up. Also, put your magikarp (and similar mons that don't learn anything useful pre evolution) in the daycare until they're at level 19 (or just before whenever you want to evolve them at), they don't learn anything important anyway

PP restores, berries, heart scales (Thanks to u/rayra2)

Use rock smash on the rock in Violet city (the city with the first gym). No encounter will spawn from breaking that one, and you will get shards to exchange with the guy who gives you berries, and also the other items mentioned.

people who passionately complain about johto being the worst pokemon region as if it’s objective fact because of the level curve get on my fucking nerves man. you’re allowed to not like johto for whatever reason but it’s like these people have never considered that some people who play pokemon might enjoy other things about the game or be playing it for other reasons. yes johto’s level curve is bad but i love johto and the level curve doesn’t get in the way of my enjoyment. sorry it gets in the way of urs and ur entitled to that experience and opinion but for the love of god stop replying to anyone who shares like HGSS positivity or whatever with “but the level cap is bad, how do you defend this” as if the user is stupid for liking it. have you ever heard of a term called nuance? liking some things but not others? give me a Break holy shit. in general people going out of their way to shit on other people’s enjoyment of harmless things is exhausting though

This is what I have left to fight Falkner with (I'm not allowing myself to go above his ace Pokemon's level). My plan is to do as much damage to his pidgey as I can with Gus String, then switch to Splinter, use focus energy, finish off the pidgey, then spam bite on pidgeotto and pray for fliches/crits.

Maybe I would've been better off resetting after the Sprout Tower fiasco but idk, I want to see if I can clutch this run.

Hello! It's SbSbS's anniversary (and my birthday aaaaa!)! Sorry it took so much longer to come back than I said it would- long story short I had no buisness thinking I could recover from what was happening in a month, and I more troubles came up leading to little time or energy to make pages. But I do think I'm in a good enough place to start back up again and get this battle-chapter done! Thank you all for waiting for me.

Pokemon League team 1! Heart Gold!

So time for a team round up before the first Pokemon league challenge in this game!

I am feeling pretty confident and have planned well. Lance is always a threat we will see how he goes.

Denim the Heracross

Caught on route 33 at level 5 specifically to fight Whitney but honestly has been the MVP for this run so far despite not having any bug type moves! Guts has yet to be useful but as you can see I have prepoisoned him for the elite 4 battle. Hopefully I can juggle this to avoid his death. He is currently running Swords dance, Close combat, thief(utility mostly) and Strength. He should be useful for All of Karen's pokemon, Bruno's Onix and Maybe Koga's forretress if I'm desperate. If in doubt I am hoping he can set up to sweep.

Clammy the Cloyster

Ok, Clammy is a very late addition but is my answer to the dragonites. Possibly not the best one either. Still according to my damage calculations it can one shot all three dragonites... its just the outspeeding. Nevermeltice is currently its item to ensure quick victories however a Waccan berry to defend against electric types may be necessary against Dragonites Thunder. I am not certain he will be useful beyond Lance but we will see. He is currently running, Ice beam, Ice Shard, Protect and Surf. I honestly don't know how well he will perform because I think I messed up his EV training. If all goes to pot however I always have quagsire.

Athena the Noctowl

The first Pokemon I caught at level 3 on route 29. Noctowl has been so useful in the early game and dropped off more recently. It sucks its not a real psychic type but hopefully we will manage. Noctowl is mainly to deal with Bruno and to set up reflects. We will see how useful it is. She is currently running. Air slash, Extrasensory, Roost and reflect.

Night the Umbreon

Originally caught to deal with Morty He has been a massive wall which is so useful. He doesnt deal out much damage but DAMN can he outlast pretty much anything which is pretty great. He is currently set up with Dark pulse, Confuse ray, Protect and Sand attack. Its a shame I cant get Thunder wave or toxic on it so it can unleash its full potential as I hate using accuracy hacks. But if I have to I will. Umbreons main use will be against Will to take out the psychic types. Then Maybe as a slow pivot later on.

Ion the Magnezone

Caught in the Safari Zone mostly to replace the loses of both Steelix and electrode at once. But Honestly I should have just not got a steelix or electrode and started with Magnezone. Bulky with excellent special attack and not terrible speed good moves with Mirror shot Hidden power ghost (great for Will would have loved Ice though) and thunderbolt (although I am sad about the accuracy of Mirror shot but there are no alternatives). He also has thunder wave for speed lowering and stuff. Honestly I needed an electric attack for Gyarados but the steel type will be useful for all of this.

Blaze the Typhlosion

Finally is Typhlosion honestly he's been pretty underwhelming so far and I was close to bringing quagsire instead however looking at the number of pokemon weak to fire in this league it is probably going to be essential. Fortunately being fast and with good special attack I am hoping it will be a fantastic revenge killer so long as it can take some attacks. I have currently taught it Flamethrower, Fire blast, earthquake and quick attack. I may swap flame thrower for focus blast later which is why I am using the Wide lens. I almost used the Zoom lens until I realised it only works on slow pokemon!. Alternatively I can give it the choice specs but that may be going on Cloyster. I can always switch.

Overall I am happy with my team! It is far stronger with Magnezone and I hope Cloyster doesn't mess up Lance too much. We will have to see. Either way. I am prepared. Fingers crossed this goes well.

Fun Fack:

So everyone who has played through Johto remembers Togepi, and the togepi egg given to the player always knows the egg move Extrasensory. Interestingly enough, if the pokemon in the egg is randomized it will always know the move Extrasensory.

Got a weedle from the egg and she's got Extrasensory. My impossible bug.

Playing heartgold in a old r4, yes gold have a empolion because the person that make the rom (it’s a no trade evol) give it to him maybe he see him more a piplup evolution line than a Marril one? Don’t know.
