In the yellow abstract I did today (see Forward Progress), the first yellow wash was not absorbed by the lines I scratched into the surface of the paper. In my study below, I blotched watercolor onto paper that was already scored, and found the same result: the scratches did not soak up the pigments.

To make the lines visible, I rubbed the paper’s surface with charcoal and then brushed it off.…

HIDDEN DESIGN

Hidden Design Tijdens mijn minor kwam ik in aanraking met de nederlandse designstudio Afdeling Buitengewone Zaken (ABZ). Deze studio heeft een eigen ontwerp- en onderzoeksmethode ontwikkeld genaamd Hidden Design. Met het gebruik van slimme prototype en het verbergen van de rol als designer worden deelnemers meegenomen in een voor hun 'echt' design proces. Hierdoor komen verborgen inzichten al heel vroeg in het proces boven water en worden eerlijke en oprechte reacties verkregen tijdens de ontwikkeling van je systeem. De oplossingen die je zo vind zijn echt duurzaam en evolueert naar het einddoel. 

Toepassing

Voor mijn project zit ik nu in het dilemma dat ik nu vanuit mijn eigen kennis kan gaan ontwikkelen, maar met oog op de tijd zou ik te weinig oprechte testen en aanpassingen kunnen doen. Ik wil de intuïtie van mensen gebruiken door deze 'interventions' in hun wereld te plaatsen, en zo tot een echt natuurlijke interactie met licht komen. De manier van werken en mindset die je aanneemt in hidden design kan voor mij persoonlijk heel waardevol zijn in dit project.

Over hidden design

"Zodat mensen niet niet gevraagd word hoe ze iets in de toekomst zouden willen, maar dat mijnsen gewoon zijn zoals ze zijn en iets wel of niet gebruiken" --- Zeker bij iets natuurlijk aansturen neigen mensen naar wat de 'denken' dat ze in de toekomst zouden willen. Daarom krijg je die gestures die niet echt werken. Dat is waarom deze methode bij mijn proces past, mensen hoeven niet te denken of ze iets zouden willen, het is natuurlijk voor ze of niet, eerlijke reacties. ---

"Het leuke aan een test was dat het compleet nep was, alles werd gefaked, maar doordat mensen geloofden dat het echt was kon je het product ook al echt testen. Dat terwijl een product helemaal bouwen en testen een grote investering kost aan materiaal en tijd."
