new orleans has a world war ii museum that’s really awesome but it used to just be the D-Day museum and one time in grammar school my girl scout troop did an overnight field trip there 

they gave us the clickers that parachuters would use when they landed and it was like pretty interactive (not to an intense or scary level). that was really awesome

we went one time in middle school also, which I remember more significantly because they had a special exhibit on holocaust victims and because our teacher gave us a worksheet that was almost impossible to find the answers for and really took away from the experience

U.S. Charges Poaching Ring Allegedly Involved in Massive Utah Dinosaur Bone Heist

After Being Excavated and Fashioned into Dinosaur Dig Kits, Carved Figurines, Jewelry, and More for Sale, "Tens of Thousands of Pounds of Dinosaur Bones have Lost Virtually all Scientific Value.”

Federal prosecutors today announced charges against four people allegedly involved in a massive dinosaur bone smuggling scheme. Thousands of pounds of dinosaurs and other fossils were secretly excavated from government lands in Utah, according to court documents. Some were sold at gem shows, and others were shipped to China after being mislabeled as construction materials or gems. The poaching and subterfuge, court documents allege, lasted at least from March 2018 to earlier this year.

“By removing and processing these dinosaur bones to make consumer products for profit, tens of thousands of pounds of dinosaur bones have lost virtually all scientific value, leaving future generations unable to experience the science and wonder of these bones,” United States Attorney Trina Higgins said in a press statement.

"It’s certainly a significant volume of dinosaur bones," says David Evans, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum who’s not involved in the case. He adds that it’s unusual for so much material to be removed from government lands, and that many people likely aren’t aware of the scale of the black market on U.S. dinosaur specimens.

Some of the dinosaur bones were fashioned into commercial products, including dinosaur dig kits, carved figurines, knives, jewelry, and polished bowling ball-like spheres, according to court documents.

Before now, one of the biggest known dinosaur fossil busts occurred in 2006, when 8,000 pounds of fossils—including thousands of dinosaur eggs, petrified pine cones, and prehistoric crabs—were seized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a gem and mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. Those items had been illegally taken from Argentina.

In Utah, dinosaur bones found on private lands may be legally excavated and sold, but it is a crime to dig up and sell fossils discovered on federal or state lands. Charges against the four Utah defendants, who are scheduled to have their initial court appearance later today in Salt Lake City, include conspiracy against the U.S., false labeling, theft of U.S. property, money laundering, and attempted smuggling of goods, among others.

A Dino 🦕 Trafficking Scheme

Beneath Utah’s surface, there’s a rich cache of dinosaur fossils, revealing details about prehistoric animals such as carnivorous allosauruses and spine-backed stegosauruses. Almost three-quarters of the state consists of public lands managed by federal or state agencies, and recent fossil finds there include a huge collection of Utahraptors and an entirely new species, a big-nosed distant relative of Triceratops.

Court documents describing the years-long Utah poaching operation allege that Vint and Donna Wade purchased illegally obtained bones and other fossils to sell at U.S. gem and mineral shows and also to ship to China, and that Jordan Willing and his father Steve Willing trafficked dinosaur bones to China using their company JMW Sales. The documents also allege that two unnamed and unindicted coconspirators illegally excavated fossils from federal lands and sold them off to the Wades.

In total, the Wades sold over $1 million in paleontological material to the Willings, according to the court documents, which were filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Utah.

The fossil heist also led to $3 million in damages, the federal government claims, including large restoration and repair expenses and the costs of losses to science.

During the years of the alleged smuggling activity, the fossil shipments did sometimes run into problems. One shipment of dinosaur bones that was sent from Scottsdale, Arizona, to China in March 2019 was falsely labeled as items including jasper and wood, but the cargo was ultimately held up in China “due to high radiation levels,” court documents state. The fossilized materials had apparently picked up natural radioactive material over time. (Investigators can sometimes discover the origin of fossils based on radioactive signatures in the specimens that provide clues about where they were buried.)

Paleontologists typically remove dinosaur bones using a methodological process designed to limit damage and preserve evidence found in the fossils and their surroundings—information about when dinosaurs lived, what species they were, and sometimes even how they behaved.

Amateur diggers hunting for recognizable body parts to sell, however, generally do not take such care. Federal prosecutors claim that the loss to science from this poaching ring is largely incalculable.

D-Day: Operation Overlord

On June 6, 1944, over 160,000 Allied troops, including Americans, British, and Canadians, embarked on a courageous mission known as Operation Overlord. The D-Day invasion, as it would be famously known, marked the beginning of the end of World War II.

The largest seaborne invasion in history, D-Day saw troops land on five Normandy beaches, codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The assault started with airborne operations, and naval forces bombarded the coastal defenses before the landing of ground troops.

The D-Day invasion was a logistical feat. From deception tactics, such as Operation Fortitude, which misdirected German attention from Normandy, to the innovation of the Higgins boats, it showcased ingenuity as well.

The cost was steep; the Allies suffered heavy casualties. Yet their bravery and sacrifice led to the successful establishment of a Western front in Europe, a crucial step towards liberating the continent from the Nazi German regime.

As we look back on this historic day, we remember the extraordinary courage and dedication of all those who fought for freedom on the shores of Normandy.

Ted Lasso walked down the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets, whistling a little tune.

He swung by Beard's place to pick him up, Beard waiting with a cup of coffee of course.

"So, did ya get it?" he asks with a grin.

Ted nods. "I sure did, Beardo."

"And?"

"And it's beautiful. The perfect ring for her," Ted answers with a smile.

"Good. So when are you gonna do it?"

Ted tilts his head and thinks. "I haven't decided. Y'know we have that vacation coming up on the beach. Maybe then? Or maybe just at home. I don't know."

"You think she'll say yes?"

Ted stops in his tracks.

"Why'd you ask a thing like that?"

"I dunno, I'm just making sure you're ready, that's all. Don't end up like me and my... [Beard counts on his fingers] three failed proposals."

Ted chuckles, remembering the girls Beard proposed to all those years ago.

"I think I'll be just fine, Beardo. Thanks for askin' though."

He strolls into the Club and takes the ring out of the box while he sits alone in his office for a moment. He looks at it in the light. Imagines how it'll look on your pretty left finger.

Will you cry?

Will you jump into his arms? Oh, he hopes his back is up for that.

Will you say yes right away?

You won't faint, will ya?

"Ted, I have a question for you," Higgins announces as he waltzes into the room, and Ted nearly drops the ring out of his fingers.

"Is that...what I think it is?" Higgins asks, his eyebrows raise and a cheeky smile on his face.

Ted nods. "Yeah, ya found me out there, Higgy Smalls. I'm proposin' to y/n. Haven't decided when."

Higgins approaches and looks at the ring.

"Gorgeous ring. I remember picking up my wife's from the jeweler's. I was so nervous, keeping that on me for so long, like a big secret."

Ted gets a little anxious hearing this. He needs a plan.

A few days go by and Ted is still weighing his options. Vacation sounds good, but he doesn't wanna make a scene. You don't like being the center of attention.

He thought about doing it at home, in your flat, but it was more his flat that you just moved in. It didn't feel right either.

He could do it on the pitch, at night, since this is where you met.

"Ted? Did you hear me?" Rebeccca is trying to snap him out of his thoughts.

"Oh, yeah. Sorry, boss. Brain somewhere else."

Rebecca smiles. "I think I know where it was. A little birdie told me you're proposing to y/n. Congratulations."

Ted smiles and blushes. "Yeah, I'm so dang lucky finding her. I just...am tryin' to find the right time when."

Rebecca waves him off. "You'll figure it out. She seems down to earth, I would avoid anything too flashy. Rupert did that to me, and it was so uncomfortable with a crowd."

Ted gulps at this. Well, there goes the beach for sure.

"Thanks for the advice, boss," he says, heading out of her office. "I'll see ya tomorrow."

At home, the ring sits in the bottom of his khaki pocket. Maybe tonight's the night?

He watches you fix dinner, dancing and swaying as you listen to music. It makes him smile, coming home to this domestic little life with you.

His fingers fumble with the ring in his pocket. It feels like a million pounds. He just wants to put it on that beautiful hand already...

"Ted? Ready to eat?" you ask, snapping him back.

"Yeah, let's eat, darlin'."

"So, we ready for our big vacation next week?" you ask and smile. You've been excited to get away with just the two of you, rather than a team road game.

"Of course, sugar! It'll be wonderful. Nice to just relax with you, nowhere to go, the ocean breeze..."

You both smile and finish your meal, curling up on the couch to watch TV.

"Not tonight," he thinks.

Ted makes a few phone calls before the trip. Little things he wants just right for the room.

When you arrive at the hotel, you're swept off your feet with the luxurious accommodations - recommended by Rebecca, of course - and the view of the ocean.

"This will be a beautiful trip, Teddy," you say, roping your arms around him on the balcony, listening to the ocean.

"Yes it will," he answers. "Especially with you."

so, ed ‘racetrack’ higgins was a newsie who helped lead the 1899/1900 newsboys’ strike against william randolph hearst and joseph pulitzer with louis ballat (who was known as kid blink), dave simons (who we don’t know the newsie name of), and (reportedly, because there aren’t that many sources with him) spot conlon (and, honestly? they could have been the same kid. not likely, but possibly). he was a brooklyn newsboy (from brighton beach specifically), and was between the ages of 16-21. he spent a considerable amount of time between the two racetracks he was near (hence the nickname). he had talked about william c. whitney, who owned a private racetrack, trained horses, and spent a lot of time at sheepshead (he said he had run horses for him, but that could be false). in just about every article he was interviewed for, it was noted that he talked A LOT about the races, even when they weren’t mentioned. like, at all (I love that for him, actually). he was charismatic, bold, and a natural-born leader. unfortunately, after the strike, he essentially disappears. there were a lot of ed higgins in the new york/jersey area, and it’s hard to track an idividual person, especially after the war started.

now, because this isn’t actually my historical area of expertise, AND because I have actual hcs, we’re going to move on to the fun stuff.

ANTONIO ‘racetrack’ higgins is a manhattan newsie. he’s the second in command to jack kelly and more or less the ambassador to brooklyn. he’s snarky, loves gambling and spot conlon, and is probably the reason adderall was invented. he’s brilliant with numbers, but couldn’t tell you how to spell algebra to save his life. he’s petty, smokes more than anyone should, and will risk life and limb for those that he loves. he doesn’t plan to make it to 25, but will lie to anyone who asks and says he wants to be doctor for kids.

he becomes a newsie at nine, right after his mom dies, and he looks (maybe) seven, so he’s immediately taken under the wing of an older newsie. he’s dragged to the races after they finish selling, and it’s like something just clicks inside of him. he notices the trends, gets good at counting the cards, finding the tells of a good bet.

when asked, he would just shrug, a jaunty grin on his face. “it’s jus’ numbers,” he would say.

he meets a young francis sullivan (newly jack kelly) and charlie (now crutchie) when he stumbles upon their hiding spot in an alley. he recognized jack, and laughed instead of cowering when he threatened to soak him. he cheerfully informs them of a better place to hide on top of the lodging house, and from then on, they’re brothers friends.

he travels to brooklyn by himself the first time on a dare from albert (who has since become his best friend), and gets caught by hotshot within thirty minutes. he gets told to never come back with a hearty punch to the ribs for good measure.

he returns the next day.

he’s not allowed coffee (per jack), because he’s apparently “too damn jittery” as it is.

he can speak a little bit of italian, and converses with itey when they’re both at the lodging house. if he’s in public, he pretends he doesn’t know any.

when finch and albert start dating, part of him is sad, no matter how happy the rest of him is. it’s not fair, and he doesn’t know why, but it feels like a door’s shutting. he laughs, and holds spot a little tighter afterwards.

skittery taught him how to throw his first real punch, and then immediately started a fight with him “to make sure he understood the lesson”.

he’s scared of loud thunderstorms.

he hates the sound of a creaky wheel on a carriage.

he doesn’t mind girls, but he would prefer short brunettes with a temper (he’s very much got a type, and he’s not ashamed of it).

he would love harry potter, but despise JKR.

he believes in god, but doesn’t go to church.

if he had a kid, he would name them either maria or sebastian, after his mother and uncle respectively.
