🔮 last weekend i was part of the #UKYAreadingretreat19 with thirteen other book bloggers. i want to go back already, honestly i had such an amazing time and feel so blessed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ whilst there i finished reading HEX LIFE which is an anthology of witchy stories. i enjoyed it a lot! so many of the stories were very inclusive too which was awesome. _____ QOTD: what is your favourite witchy read? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ { #gifted #hexlife #titanbooks #forreview #bookstoread #bookstoreview #bookblogger #aniaahlborn #kelleyarmstrong #amberbenson #chesyaburke #rachelcaine #kirstindearborn #rachelautumndeering #tananarivedue #theodoragoss #kathoward #almakatsu #sherrilynkenyon #sarahlangan #helenmarshall #jennifermcmahon #hillarymonahan #marysangiovanni #angelaslatter #witchessociety #witchyvibes #witchesinliterature #bookstagram } https://ift.tt/33rs5Ga

This is a really great thread, and 100%, the concepts she’s talking about here apply to fanfiction.
I’ve unrolled the thread here so you can read it in full without having to head over to Twitter:
“ I think YA needs to have a big, huge sit down talk acknowledging the difference between featuring something problematic, promoting problematic things, and how those two concepts--which are very different--intersect with privilege.
I have said since the beginning of my writing career that I am not here to write morality tales for my teenagers.  I'm not here to substitute in for a guardian or someone in a position of authority with those kids. The onus of parenting kids is on their parents or guardians.
While I'm happy to be the piece of art that launches a dialogue about queerness or safe sex or violence or WHAT HAVE YOU, I am not interested in being, nor should I be positioned as, the authority over a kid's life when I don't know that kid.
I am an entertainer, not a stand-in mom. And sometimes while I'm entertaining, I WRITE SOME REALLY MESSED UP STUFF.   Willfully. Knowingly.   For teenagers.  Because I honestly believe teenagers can handle a whole heck of a lot more than a lot of adults give them credit for.
I feel like most teenagers are going to read some hyper-violence in a book and know that it is fundamentally bad. Don't cut out a dude's tongue.  I did it in a book, but don't do it in real life!
That gets you A Record. And a lot of Therapy. But I assume you know that.  Just like I assume if you're gonna pick up the new Bardugo book, you're gonna realize that whatever fucked up shit she puts in there, you're gonna know it isn't good.
Featuring problematic elements like hyper violence is, arguably, a necessity to certain brackets of YA fiction.  Horror would be relatively boring without it, for example. BEING problematic is different.  It's when you're promoting systematic whiteness at the expense of PoC.
It's oppressive language. It's microaggressions and appropriation. It's ableism and homophobia and cis privilege and a whole slew of other things that are evident in a work but not properly addressed OR challenged.
But what I'm seeing, or have seen more of lately, is the language of the second--important language that we NEED so we can diversify kidlit--being used to condemn regular ol' work that's got messed up stuff in it.That's not cool.
Cause ultimately it makes the language we need to actually tackle oppressive works less meaningful. It's kinda co-opting the language we need to make a point about, usually, honestly, personal tastes.
I understand that I speak from a position of privilege, too. I am a white passing cis person. My "notion" of problematic is going to be very different from someone from another walk of life who will have greater nuance on, example, aforementioned problematic whiteness.
I am never going to tell a person with less privilege that they are wrong to see things that my privilege didn't "let" me see. But I am going to sketch a brow at someone /not in that situation/ trying to use progressive language to condemn fiction having weird, nasty elements.
Particularly if it's cloaked in pearl clutching and THINK OF THE CHILDRENS. I did. The childrens like my super messed up horror books fairly often. It's how I keep selling them to trad pub.
TL:DR "Not for me" and "Not my experience" are VERY, VERY, VERY different than slapping a problematic label on something. Your personal threshold isn't everyone else's. You need to deal with that and realize the answer isn't to take away from OTHER people. One last note because of course I think of it after: I committed to putting trigger warnings on my books. I do that to spare readers who I sincerely don't wish to upset. I think it's one small thing authors can do to mitigate unintentional harm to their audience. YMMV “

This thread, but this post in in particular:
“When women talk about emotional labor, this *is* what we're talking about, and I've got high school juniors recognizing it for what it is.
If you want people to be earnestly interested in you, you return the courtesy. You don't just get it on the merits of Cis Male.”

RT @HillaryMonahan: You got that person on Twitter that you awkwardly shuffle side to side looking at, and you want to wear a sandwich board that reads PLEASE BE MY FRIEND before handing them a note you folded sixty five times so it looks like an origami seagull? Yeah, me neither. https://www.youtube.com/c/lifesang

RT @HillaryMonahan: My oldest friend's three year old, Abby, was involved in a tractor accident a few weeks ago. She lost part of her leg and has had multiple surgeries. The family is raising funds to cover expenses. Sarah can't work atm. Can we get some boosts, folks? https://t.co/SatxkhxOrR

People relating to your stories with one of their own can be perceived as making it about them. Autistic folks often do this to express understanding and empathy, which is an active brain skill. It's rarely malice but a way to relate to you.— Hillary Monahan (@HillaryMonahan) May 18, 2020
