i'm having fun in the pokemon fandom, but i'm really feeling the lack of the kinds of deep meta and character-study fanfics that fandoms like gravity falls and undertale have.

there's really something to be said for what not having a steady stream of new content does to the fandom ecosystem. without constant new content you're forced to really dig into the source material you do have if you want to keep engaging with it, and that leads to tons of really interesting analysis.

meanwhile the pokemon fandom gets new stuff so comparatively fast, and the fandom is spread so thin between the games and the anime and the other anime and the manga and the spinoff games and the mystery dungeon games and and and and, that there's not time for the collective fanbase to really dig into things before everyone but a handful of dedicated people move onto the next shiny new thing.

Characterizing Characters

Bakugou Katsuki.

I’ll be using the source material to create a simple list of traits he has already, then based on those traits, things we can infer about him based on those behaviors.

SourceMaterial!Bakugou is a hothead, we know this. However, at UA, his anger is almost never unreasonable. He is regularly the butt of his classmates jokes and teasing, which makes him argumentative. Outside of that he is just a very competitive teen with a grumpy disposition. He is pre-irritated.

SourceMaterial!Bakugou is rarely malicious in his words. Most things he says seemingly comes from a place of indifference. (Calling people extras, taking a long time to learn names and quirks, etc.)

SM!Bakugou is a goody two-shoes, despite his mouth. He sleeps early, studies hard, has been seen yelling at his classmates about making sure to eating well.

SM!Bakugou is socially awkward. He doesn’t just struggle with being nice, he struggles with being appropriate in general.

SM!Bakugou has great deductive reasoning skills. It helps in battle as well as him learning about interpersonal relationships.

SM!Bakugou is half decent with kids, he makes a point of analyzing and understanding their behavior to relate to them.

SM!Bakugou is a tough love kind of guy, but he actively acknowledges his classmates strengths.

SM!Bakugou has mission anxiety from both times he was held hostage.

SM!Bakugo regularly pushes his physical limits, regardless of injury or wellbeing.

Now we can make some inferences based on the information we have already.

ProHero!Bakugou found better outlets for his anger. MMA, quirk ranges, general exercise, etc.

ProHero!Bakugou still hates the press, but has learned how to conduct himself professionally. His interviews give the same cold feel as Aizawa’s.

ProHero!Bakugou would hold youth self-defense classes featuring different heroes, to prevent incidents like the sludge villain from happening again.

ProHero!Bakugou would take on many mentees and sidekicks. Feeling he’d be the best person to whip them into heroes.

ProHero!Bakugou would not give lots of verbal praise to his mentees and sidekicks. He’d just give them more responsibilities as the are able to handle them.

ProHero!Bakugou would have similar scaring to ProHero!Sero. Scars from injury and muscle damage would be most prominent on his shoulders, biceps, and forearms.

ProHero!Bakugou would work very closely with ProHero!Kirishima, ProHero!Jirou, and ProHero!Uraraka. Relying on their skills in combat, reconnaissance, and rescue, respectively.

Now, some personal headcannons I have. 💥

Bakugou rolls his eyes, A LOT. Mainly to keep himself from saying something out of pocket.

He cracks his wrists a lot, and his fingers are always sore.

He is a momma’s boy, but he’s an easier child for his father.

Bakugou is a polyglot.

Bakugou wouldn’t date another hero, but not a regular civilian either. Maybe someone in the medical field?

Bakugou has cuteness aggression with animals and his friends think it’s hilarious.

He takes Yaoyorozu with him to events because, “She’s the only one with any sense around here.”

Bakugou has gotten in trouble for modifying and tinkering with his gauntlets without approval.

Let me know who I should do next. I may do a secondary post the further I get into rewatching the show.

Telling you this in the kindest, most well-meaning way:

So, the tumblr search function is wack. Always has been. It’s different on blogs than it is in the website-wide search. In the site-wide search, only the first 5 tags on a post are referenced. So for example, on a piece of art depicting 6 characters, tagging it as

#sourcematerial, #character1, #character2, #character3, #character4, #character5, #character6, #my art

…means that searching for “character5,” “character6” and “my art” in the site-wide search will not show that post, even though those tags are included on it. Because only the first 5 tags are searchable in the site-wide search. (On your own blog, it’s a little different. But that’s another discussion.)

I’m telling you this because it means that tagging multiple variations of a character’s name (for example, Gaster) beyond the first 5 tags will not get your post seen any more than not adding extra tags would. You are, of course, more than welcome to do whatever you want!! This is your blog and you are free to do as you like. If that is simply how you organize your own blog, that is your business! However, it seems a lot of extra work to write out so many variations of one character, when doing so will not return any increase in likes, reblogs, etc.

Please feel free to disregard this! I don’t mean to tell you what to do, in any capacity. You can tag as much as you like, for whatever reason. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. On a chilly spring morning in March, British coast guards spotted something unusual around 100 kilometers off the Scottish shoreline: a dark stain, stretching 23 kilometers into the North Atlantic Ocean.

According to an internal analysis prepared by the coast guard’s satellite services and seen by POLITICO, the likely source of that stain was Innova, a tanker roughly the size of the Eiffel Tower that at the time was hauling 1 million barrels of sanctioned oil from Russia on its way to a refinery in India.

Yet the coast guard did little to investigate further, and the tanker — free from any repercussion — continues to trade oil today, helping fill the Kremlin’s war chest more than two years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Innova is just one of hundreds in the world’s so-called shadow fleet, a collection of often aging, poorly maintained ships sailing in defiance of Western sanctions — and spreading environmental harm without consequences. 

A joint investigation by POLITICO and the not-for-profit journalism group SourceMaterial found at least nine instances of covert shadow fleet vessels leaving spills in the world’s waters since 2021, using satellite images from the SkyTruth NGO paired with shipping data from market analysis firm Lloyd’s List and commodity platform Kpler.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard told POLITICO the ships posed a “significant danger” to the marine environment. “The incidents [here] illustrate this.”

It’s a problem that’s only grown worse following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With Moscow under Western sanctions, an increasing number of tankers are ferrying illicit goods — and potential environmental devastation — across the globe. Not only are these vessels creaky and largely unregulated, they’re often uninsured, meaning that in case of a leak, or more serious spill, a government would struggle to hold them accountable. 

POLITICO and SourceMaterial identified discharges everywhere from Thailand to Vietnam to Italy and Mexico, all linked to the shadow fleet. The tankers also passed through busy shipping corridors like the Red Sea and the Panama Canal, meaning any serious accident could rupture international trade routes. 

Experts believe it’s only a matter of time before one of these ships suffers a catastrophe with major environmental — and economic — devastation.

“The oil spills and risk of slicks are horrendous,” said Isaac Levi, Europe-Russia lead and a shadow fleet expert at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a think tank. “Beyond the environmental damage, some of which will be irreversible, it’s a huge impact to coastal states that have to bear the cost of cleaning this up.”

In short: “It’s a ticking time bomb,” Levi said.

Following multiple scientific studies that have revealed that carbon offsets are not as reliable as once thought, the market value of carbon offsets has dropped by around 61% when compared to its near-peak value in 2022, a new report has found.

In early 2023, a major investigative report by The Guardian, Die Zeit and SourceMaterial found that the vast majority of forest carbon offset programs are actually “phantom credits” that don’t help remove any emissions from the atmosphere. A 2022 study that analyzed forest-based carbon offsets in California for a decade found no climate benefits from the offset programs in that time period. Yet another study, published in March 2023, found that many carbon offsetting programs weren’t using scientific best practices to calculate carbon credits, leading to over-estimates of the benefits of these programs.

Now, a report by the nonprofit Ecosystem Marketplace found that the voluntary carbon market (VCM) value has declined 61%, from $1.9 billion in 2022 to around $723 million in 2023. The carbon offset market value had peaked around 2021, when the value reached over $2 billion.

Since the peak, the value has decreased by about 56% year-over-year, Ecosystem Marketplace found.

Experts noted that to make carbon offsetting work, there will need to be more reliability and action from the carbon credit programs.

“If the VCM hopes to increase its mitigation potential and the value it provides to ecosystems and communities, especially those hosting [The Nature Conservancy] projects, it is imperative that the credit supply shows its integrity by shifting towards methodologies that use the best available science and social safeguards,” Maximiliano Bernal Temores, carbon markets assistant, Impact Finance & Markets at The Nature Conservancy, said in a press release.

“Crediting standards and project developers must incorporate best-science practices like dynamic baselines and remote sensing to ensure the VCM, especially nature-based credits, meets buyer expectations,” Temores added.

The once most popular type of credit, REDD+, had the biggest losses in 2023. The REDD+ stands for “reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries” and is based on a United Nations framework. 

But in 2023, researchers discovered that several REDD+ carbon credit projects in Peru, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Cambodia did little to curb deforestation, and these projects had a much smaller impact on emissions reductions than they claimed, Forests News reported.

I mean i have favorites in each sourcematerial i enjoy but they don't inspire me much.

I can connect outside inspiration to a pre-existing character or someone's OC but not the other way around, I don't derive inspiration FROM them.

Like seeing a stupid meme and an idea hits you full force like a truck from wich a mental image or scenario springs forth that can be applied to X and suit them wich you can then lay out and/or depict.

But watching blorbo's, corpotate spawned or lovingly created by their person, doesn't kick up ideas in my head for me to run with and make my own if ANY of that makes sense??

You know what's worse than doing trauma olympics in the fandom? When you deny the other characters' existent suffering and pretend only one character suffers in the sourcematerial. At least with the olympics you acknowledge that other characters had it bad too besides your beloved fave, you "just" downplay the pain of the others, like it's not that a big deal, and coddle your fave for the same thing, but with the other thing, you just straight up turn blind eye over the horrible stuff that happens to the others entirely and act like the fandom is the one that ignores this character's suffering in the favor of the other characters, when you are actually just mad that your fave doesn't get ALL the attention, and people care about other characters too.

SM!Kirishima handles criticism extremely well for a teen, takes everything he learns and applies it immediately.

SM!Kirishima is very street smart. Struggles with book smarts but is fairly studious.

Prohero!Kirishima is excellent with kids, probably would regularly do events for kids to teach them about heroic/chivalrous behavior.

Prohero!Kirishima is a combat hero but made sure to learn the calming and descolation techniques that rescue hero’s use.

Prohero!Kirishima still has moments of quirk insecurity, but he talks about it openly with the public for others to relate to.

Keeps telling himself he’s gonna stop swearing, keeps forgetting to stop.

Falls asleep on FaceTime kind of guy. Doesn’t just have to be with his partner, has fallen asleep on FT with Denki countless times.

Smells like sandalwood and eucalyptus.

Gives guys fist bumps and girls high fives.

Makes silly faces at kids at the grocery store.
