At last: the finished cyanotype frame. The reproduction of the cyanotype is on display while the original is safety protected from light underneath. Though the image here shows the frame propped open to highlight its design, the hinged frame is meant to be hung on a wall or displayed on an easel, the intention being to keep it closed so the original cyanotype is protected. We felt this frame — originally designed for a gallery client — offered unique solutions, so we created a replication of it for our showroom in LIC. (1/2) Continuing to make our hinged frame for a cyanotype: To attach the two sides, and allow the frame to open and close, we use brass hinges, which we’ll fix to the side of the frame. (2/2) Next, the lengths of wood are joined with corner splines. Once the glue dries, the splines are sanded down and the entire frame is hand sanded. To be continued, next week... (1/2) The first step in making our hinged frame for the cyanotype is to mill eight lengths of wood (image 1). The profile of the exterior frame is a design called the “Fox Talbot,” which we originally created to frame works by British photographer Henry Fox Talbot. We then notch a lip so the exterior frame can sit directly on the interior frame (image 2). A special hinged frame built to house a cyanotype photograph from 1908. Cyanotyping is a photographic printing process that was developed in the late 1800s. If not protected properly, the prints can fade when exposed to prolonged periods of light. To display the sensitive photograph, we designed two frames which are attached with hinges. The exterior frame holds a reproduction of the cyanotype; under it, the interior frame holds the original photograph so it can be protected from exposure. In our upcoming posts, we’ll outline the steps involved in making this frame.
