Stretching hour! I’ve lost so much flexibility to the hipbreak; there’s hardly any left. What used to be easy, splits for example, are now painful and almost inconceivable. Will I get back to where I was before the injury? Time will tell. For now, I will continue stretching and taking all the Omega 3.

The course is pleasantly undulating. But beyond the first few hundred metres out of the stadium, tracks disappear – they have been squashed too many times by the 100km racers who had to start in the dark. So it's a choose-your-own-adventure kind of race. Lack of tracks makes it somewhat easier to overtake others but then again, the amount of extra work in store for the legs is colossal, especially on descents. Weak from the hipbreak and with practically no miles skied this winter, I fall again and again. But on the uphills, I leave them all behind, sprinting like a maniac. I have lucked out so well with the wax – I have a little too much grip because of weighing more but for today's icy conditions it's simply perfect. I fear for end of lap one, which will mark 33km and at which point the top slow ones will be taken off the course. Will I make it? With hours to spare, as it turns out! Only 17km left and I'm not even tired. No feeling compares!

Today I went for my first post-hipbreak run. Speed? None. Technique? Zilch. Flexibility? Nada. Pain: a lot. Stamina? So-so. Determination to climb back to form? 100%.

Yet again it's time for Festive 500! At just two months since the hipbreak, I am so not ready for this. But let's think of it as active recovery!
