Day dress hand-made from block-printed cotton and lined with cotton. Cut and constructed for nursing. 1830 The dress has a shallow wide neckline and long sleeves which are full at the sleevehead and tapers towards the wrist. The sleeve ends are finished with self-cuffs which are cut to wrap over and form a diagonal line, which is trimmed along the outside edge with six tiny gilt-metal, non-functional buttons. The cuffs fasten with hooks and eyes. The front panels of the bodice are decorated over the breasts with a pair of horizontal self-pleats which meet in a V-shape at the centre front. The dress has a slightly raised waist and a full bell-shaped skirt which is gathered into the waist. The hem of the skirt is trimmed with a deep self-flounce. The bodice has a loose panel which could be unfastened at the waist and lifted for nursing. The design of the print sets boldly drawn flower stems, which include marigolds, heather and valerian rendered in pink, yellow, green and indigo, on a vivid madder ground. The fabric was probably printed with indigo and madder by a resist process and overprinted with yellow to form orange and green. #history #museumcollection #antiquetextile #instamuseum #museumoninstagram #antiquecotton #historicaldress #costumehistory #fashion #historicalfashion #historicalclothing #dresshistory #fashionhistory #historicalcostume #fashionhistorian #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion  #fashionexhibition #fashioncuration #fashionmuseum #dressmuseum #costumemuseum #historyofcostume #historyoffashion #historyofdress Source: V & A https://www.instagram.com/p/CdeE1QlAmOQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Each time I have to start a new thing I feel the need to change the way I draw, I color... It's a good thing and a curse at the same time, because I never really master a specific technique, and I spend my time mostly feeling miserable. After many rejected drawings (by myself, the worst judge I've ever met), I felt happy while drawing this one (which it's usually my yardstick to understand if I'm on a decent path or not). ⠀ Well, the "MeanGiorgiaJudge©" in my head said that I should keep it, and maybe go ahead in this direction. Should I trust her? ⠀ ⠀ And you guys, do you feel the same? So often? 🙃⠀ ⠀ By the way, I hope you are doing fine and staying safe! ⠀ ⠀ Baci 💕🌸⠀ ⠀ #marieantoinette #cinema #costumes #historyofcostume #illustration #milenacanonero #sofiacoppola #giorgiamarras #bd #angoulême #newproject (presso Firuzağa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-7f9AABtJv/?igshid=3zlwv5tva23j

Day 4 is (was) Structured, so here are two of my corsets, pretty much the only structured garments I’ve made! On top, the underbust pre-Regency stays; below, my Civil War-era corset. The former is made of two layers of unbleached linen and boned with doubled half-round reed, and the latter is a single layer of cotton twill boned with plastic whalebone.

Giorno Venticinque: Firenze Reach inside, watch me grow, see me Rise// Placebo . . . Day 2/3 of classes done! Today we went to Palazzo Davanzati for a class tour of the museum. My professor is so knowledgeable about the history of the museum and even took the time to tell us a tragic love story that was illustrated on one of the many frescoed rooms. The first picture is a look outside one of the windows of my classrooms, the second is the church right next to it! I had no idea it was even there until today, it seemed so unassuming but was beautiful inside. In the Palazzo Davanzati, we got to see the traditional crafts 14th century women worked on, and the adjoining lace museum! There were examples of sewing kits, and tons of Venetian lace- a dying art form in the 21st century. This evening at my cooking class I made polenta with porcini paired perfectly with a 2015 ITG white wine that rounded out my long day nicely. #florence #firenze #studyabroad #fashiondesign #palazzodavanzati #textile #historyofcostume #sewing #historicalfashion #italianfood #italy #travel #altgirl #alt (at Florence, Italy)

German-born, American photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt is best known for his iconic V-J Day kiss image in Times Square but his legacy extends far beyond a single image. One of the first photojournalists to favour a small 35mm film camera and natural lighting, Eisenstaedt was a pioneer of a more informal, unposed style of portraiture. Working for Life magazine from 1936 to 1972, he photographed a wide range of subjects around the world, from Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Marilyn Monroe, to ice-skating waiters in St. Moritz, female Ama divers in Japan, and members of the Greek Presidential Guard getting dressed in Athens. No matter the subject, his photographs were always candid and thus timeless. Silk Tea gown, 1898–1901 A woman wore a teagown to receive guests in her own home in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These garments were far less formal and structured that typical day or evening wear, and as a result, sometimes show more creative or unusual inspirations, such as historic or non-Western forms of dress. This example is a beautifully made and decorated teagown, which shows the influence of both Japanese embroidered kimonos and 18th century robes à la française. Interior padding intended to provide warmth and the deliberate choice of a magenta lining which picks up the purple details in the lily motifs are both signs of superior design and workmanship. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the embroidery is in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. While the maker is no longer known, the smocking of the bodice clearly relates to the distinctive Liberty & Company fashions in vogue during this period, and the store might easily have been the source for this unparalleled example. MUA Barbara Daly making up Malcom McDowell in Clockwork Orange. ⠀ ⠀ This one was so much fun to draw and color, because one of my countless and unfulfilled passion is make-up. I could literally spend hours in putting make-up on people (and eventually myself, but I can be surprisingly lazy when it comes to put stuff in my face eh eh 😜)! Choosing the right products, the proper color palette, taking care of the skin and magnifying the faces of my friends... I did it in few very good occasions, like parties and weddings, and I WOULD LIKE TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN! Please, let me make-up your face! 🤩⠀ ⠀ Meanwhile, I make-up my characters... It's not the same satisfaction, but it's pretty much close to it! 💄💘⠀ ⠀ #barbaradaly #barbaradalymakeupartist #malcommcdowell #cinema #costumes #historyofcostume #illustration #milenacanonero #stanleykubrick #giorgiamarras #bd #angoulême #newproject #makeup (presso Firuzağa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBbDdsQBPzS/?igshid=1ywq3hx086wa

Cheating a little to bring you Inside and Outside in the same photo. This is my lovely cross-barred summer gown, made from a pattern in Norah Waugh’s Cut of Women’s Clothes (not a source I use frequently), dating around 1848-1852. So much gathering in different ways!
