Day dress hand-made from block-printed cotton and lined with cotton. Cut and constructed for nursing. 1830 The dress has a shallow wide neckline and long sleeves which are full at the sleevehead and tapers towards the wrist. The sleeve ends are finished with self-cuffs which are cut to wrap over and form a diagonal line, which is trimmed along the outside edge with six tiny gilt-metal, non-functional buttons. The cuffs fasten with hooks and eyes. The front panels of the bodice are decorated over the breasts with a pair of horizontal self-pleats which meet in a V-shape at the centre front. The dress has a slightly raised waist and a full bell-shaped skirt which is gathered into the waist. The hem of the skirt is trimmed with a deep self-flounce. The bodice has a loose panel which could be unfastened at the waist and lifted for nursing. The design of the print sets boldly drawn flower stems, which include marigolds, heather and valerian rendered in pink, yellow, green and indigo, on a vivid madder ground. The fabric was probably printed with indigo and madder by a resist process and overprinted with yellow to form orange and green. #history #museumcollection #antiquetextile #instamuseum #museumoninstagram #antiquecotton #historicaldress #costumehistory #fashion #historicalfashion #historicalclothing #dresshistory #fashionhistory #historicalcostume #fashionhistorian #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion  #fashionexhibition #fashioncuration #fashionmuseum #dressmuseum #costumemuseum #historyofcostume #historyoffashion #historyofdress Source: V & A https://www.instagram.com/p/CdeE1QlAmOQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Style Never Goes Out Of Fashion “I’ve always been fascinated by old objects and they’ve always played a big part in my life. My initial degree was in English but I was more interested in the socio-historical context to the texts we were studying that the content of the texts themselves. I subsequently worked as Head Buyer at the vintage clothing company ‘Beyond Retro’ as my other love was old clothes. I was never interested in fashion as a system when I was growing up, I didn’t read fashion magazines as a teenager, but I was an avid charity shop scavenger and always loved dressing up and creating narratives through clothing. So it was through working with the objects themselves that I became interested in the history surrounding them. I studied for a Master’s degree in History and Culture of Fashion at ‘London College of Fashion’ and the rest, as they say, is literally history.” - Amber Butchart, Fashion Historian. This will be my first full exploration into 18th century dress! I will be building the dress of the maid on the right from the undergarment up to her bow. This piece is by Louis-Marin Bonnet, he was a French artist who was around from 1736 - 1793. Based upon the robes shortness and the length of the dress I’m placing this dress circa 1760′s. Keep an eye out for my designs and design  explanation!

#waybackwednesday #vintagewednesday C1870s Black silk satin corset from the private collection of Stephanie Selmayr shown at the @conferenceofcorsetry back in August. . The corset is stiffened with corded panels used vertically in the front sections over the bust and horizontally over the hips. . Cording was a popular method often used in addition and as an alternative to whalebone. Cording was the application of sandwiching twisted cord (usually hemp, cotton or paper) between two layers of fabric. . As in the case of this example cording was also viewed as a design detail. The corded panels provided suppleness to the gament whilst still controlling the wearer's figure. . >> follow @laced_unlaced for more historical corsetry posts #corsetry #corsethistory #historicalcorset #antiquecorset #costume #antiqueclothing #victorianfashion #victoriancorset #flossing #authenticcorset #fashionhistorian #lacedunlaced #victorianstyle https://www.instagram.com/p/B5FEX5RgKin/?igshid=10ua1hpcnbxik

Silk Tea gown, 1898–1901 A woman wore a teagown to receive guests in her own home in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These garments were far less formal and structured that typical day or evening wear, and as a result, sometimes show more creative or unusual inspirations, such as historic or non-Western forms of dress. This example is a beautifully made and decorated teagown, which shows the influence of both Japanese embroidered kimonos and 18th century robes à la française. Interior padding intended to provide warmth and the deliberate choice of a magenta lining which picks up the purple details in the lily motifs are both signs of superior design and workmanship. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the embroidery is in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. While the maker is no longer known, the smocking of the bodice clearly relates to the distinctive Liberty & Company fashions in vogue during this period, and the store might easily have been the source for this unparalleled example. #Repost @norman_parkinson • • • • • • On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me ... a Hardy Amies evening dress... The shape of this 1950s satin cocktail dress designed by English couturier Hardy Amies is complex: it begins with a classic tight pencil skirt silhouette, then layered with tiers of sheer and spotty tulle and then topped with a satin bustier neck-line and more tulle in the form of a flowing train. Sounds like a hot-mess but in the hands of Amies it’s a shape that succeeds. Amies made his name as a suiting expert and opened his fashion house in 1946 in Savile Row, the home of bespoke tailoring. His eye for detail and cut is second to none and this dress, as worn by Wenda, Norman Parkinson’s wife, shows how simply looking divine is really a very intricate accomplishment. Style Never Goes Out Of Fashion “The desire to adorn the body is as old as humanity but the conventions we stick to today certainly aren’t. Louis XIV - the Sun King - oversaw the birth and development of many of the luxury industries that we associate with France. He was obsessed with shoes, especially high heels, which had been worn for horse riding by men in Persia for centuries. The colour red - at the time costly to produce - was favoured by the king for his heels. Only those admitted to his court were allowed to wear such markers of virility, wealth and status. It just goes to show that our ‘gendering’ of clothing changes over time, the arbitrary associations we have are entirely cultural constructs. Plus Christian Louboutin was certainly not the first person to make a red soled shoe sexy.” - Amber Butchart, Fashion Historian. From BBC television and radio presenter Amber Butchart ‘The Fashion Chronicles’ is an exploration of 100 of the most fascinating style stories ever told. Eve's statement fig leaf to Hilary Clinton's pantsuit, the way we choose to clothe our bodies can carry layer upon layer of meaning. Across cultures and throughout history people have used clothing to signify power and status, too adorn and beautify, even to prop up or dismantle regimes. Explore the best-dressed figures in history, from Cleopatra to Beyoncé, Joan of Arc to Iris Apfel. Some have influenced the fashion of today, while some have used their clothing to change the world. But all have a sartorial story to tell. ‘The Fashion Chronicles: Style Stories of History’s Best-Dressed, Author Amber Butchart, Published by ‘Mitchell Beazley'. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #cuturalstyle #politicalstyle #socialstyle #broadcaster #radio #tv #fashionhistorian #astitchintime #author #mitchellbeazley #thestylechroniclesstylestoriesofhistorysbestdressed #amberbutchart https://www.instagram.com/p/CeA2hMLI-fo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Glad to be attending @harvardsummerschool inaugural class on #sustainablefashion . Not too long ago I was shamed by a family member for pointlessly continuing my education. My response was why do they care? Then I realized that this was more about their insecurity and ignorance. I guess I’ll just keep learning. #fashionhistory #fashioneducation #fashionculture #fashionhistorian #ecofashion (at Harvard Summer School) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBwNMAehh7y/?igshid=ljgbm0c24a39

Роскошный наряд Тамары Карсавиной от дома моды Mouna Katorza
