Silk Tea gown, 1898–1901 A woman wore a teagown to receive guests in her own home in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These garments were far less formal and structured that typical day or evening wear, and as a result, sometimes show more creative or unusual inspirations, such as historic or non-Western forms of dress. This example is a beautifully made and decorated teagown, which shows the influence of both Japanese embroidered kimonos and 18th century robes à la française. Interior padding intended to provide warmth and the deliberate choice of a magenta lining which picks up the purple details in the lily motifs are both signs of superior design and workmanship. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the embroidery is in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. While the maker is no longer known, the smocking of the bodice clearly relates to the distinctive Liberty & Company fashions in vogue during this period, and the store might easily have been the source for this unparalleled example. Even my Tombstone Parlor has ruby silk velvet, my teagown is a Red wine shade of silk, my Red wool cycling suit is definitely hard to miss! My favorite has to be the true Red silk brocade 1883 dress I scaled from an original Harper's Bazar pattern sheet...funny thing that dress comes to life in British drawing rooms, but just looks dusty on the streets of Tombstone. Love anything from House of Worth😍🤩👏❣️ Posted @withrepost • @beths.historicaldresses Evening dress, ca. 1897 House of Worth ℹ Charles Frederick Worth was born in England and spent his young adulthood working for textile merchants in London while researching art history at museums. ℹ In 1845 he moved to Paris and worked as a salesman and a dressmaker before partnering with Otto Bobergh to open the dressmaking shop, Worth and Bobergh, in 1858. ℹ They were soon recognized by royalty and major success followed. In 1870 Worth became the sole proprietor of the business. At his shop, Worth fashioned completed creations which he then showed to clients on live models. ℹ Clients could then order their favorites according to their own specifications. This method is the origin of haute couture. Worth designed gowns which were works of art that implemented a perfect play of colours and textures created by meticulously chosen textiles and trims. ℹ The sheer volume of the textiles he employed on each dress is testimony to his respect and support of the textile industry. (That orange colour is so not accurate; that's just how it photographs...) I love my kimono, and find they are so comfortable to wear.
