The Magnificent Guide to Magic
Runes and...something else
Hello, it’s JJ again. I promised you a follow-up on the situation, so that is what I am delivering. We did manage to find Marvin, luckily a friend of ours saw him and alerted us. He texted us! It’s so very helpful! However, he is not quite...himself right now. We accidentally invited someonething in. It’s...exactly what I feared. Luckily, we have the situation contained. Namely, we locked Marvin in an empty room again. He’s throwing a tantrum in there.
I’ve been trying to find a way to fix this for four hours. Henrik and Chase are making sure nothing happens in the meantime. I’ve pulled out all the magic books, all the magick books, and all the information we have, yet it still doesn’t seem to be enough. I haven’t a clue how Marvin managed to push him out last time, the only explanation I can think of is that his attention was divided between the dreamscape, Antithesis, and m Apologies, my mind was wandering. I would thank you to ignore that sentence. I am...tired.
The point is, this may be a different sort of situation, but I have a hunch that, just like the last time, we may need magic to reverse this, something that only Marvin has out of all of us. But until I have run out of options, I will keep looking for a solution. And that brings me to the point. I have been trying to find a solution, but it may be that I need to make a solution. Using runes.
Runes are a complex study. There are some debates that they aren’t truly magick or magic, but something else on their own that witches and magicians can use as a tool. They certainly follow their own set of laws. The best way I can describe runic use is that you are writing something into being. Not exactly true. You cannot write a sentence about events in runes and expect those events to come true. That is not a normal power. I once heard tale of an anomaly in America that could write the future. Or was it speak the future? Never you mind, it’s not important right now. The point is that, using runes, you can create objects, spells, and forces out of nothing.
The most common use of runes is magickal talismans, wherein you write or carve them in a specific formation on an item and that can create a force that extends a certain way past the talisman. Usually protection, though there are ones that can bring bad luck or ill intent upon anyone in a certain radius. In addition, if you put runes on a piece of jewelry or sew them into clothing, they will give the same effect but only to the person wearing said items. These are called amulets. Placing runes on magical tools can enhance their abilities with a certain type of spell or magical purpose, and they are what powers most magickal rituals.
There are thirteen runic alphabets, seven of which have a spoken language paired with them. Each alphabet has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, one might have characters that work best for protection but no characters for elemental spells, while another has characters that are tuned to elements but rubbish for scrying, and so on. Most magicians know one or two, while most witches know three or four. I, personally, know eight, though that may be the one virtue to having more time to learn them.
You cannot cross runic alphabets. If you try, the spell you are attempting will backfire, at best fizzing out and at worst quite literally blowing up in your face. The pattern you write the runes in is also crucial. I would draw you examples, but frankly I am too tired for that, and also I wish to keep this short. Suffice to say there are five basic rules for rune patterns:
Circles are for protection
Lines are for attack
Geometric shapes, like squares or triangles, lend power to whatever you are trying to create (more sides mean more power)
Shapes overlapping can cause serious problems if done wrong (see earlier reference to runes blowing up in your face) but if done right can make it very difficult to undo the runes’ effects
The straighter and more even you write the runes and the shapes they’re in, the more powerful the effect will be
The most important thing to remember when writing runes is intent. It’s true, each rune has something it represents, like “eye” or “fire,” and when combined with each other they will have different effects, but unless you intend them to work they will not. This is why you must learn at least what runes mean before attempting to write them. Otherwise you will pick a wrong symbol, intending it to do something that it cannot do, and your spell or talisman or other effect will fail. Not backfire, but simply not work. This is also why you can find runic alphabets and known runic patterns written in spellbooks, but they do not work. The writer of the book did not intend it to work, merely to instruct, and so it will not.
—
I...must be honest. I hoped writing would somehow lend me a solution, or make me come to a sudden realization, but it has not. I still do not know what to do. I could try to go into more details of runes and hope something comes to me, but I doubt it will. If only we knew more about this.
It’s obvious that Marvin is not like this because of a host takeover. He currently already has a host, though I suppose there’s the chance he was looking for a new one. But in addition, a takeover takes a longer time, at least a year, with the most activity in the month before he makes the attempt. And there was no attempt at all, even. Marvin has not been injured in any way. Neither is this a case of forceful or coerced puppeteering. If that was true, then the actions would be different. Spastic movement, no speaking (if that is even an option in the first place), laughter, and more importantly seeing what is happening inside through the eyes. It is not a voice situation either, it is clearly Marvin speaking and moving and not him.
My closest guess is that it’s something similar to a thrall. What with the blank eyes, dull voice, unquestioning listening to the commander. But that takes at least a week of preparation, it’s not possible with just under an hou
Sorry about that sudden cutting off, Chase just wanted to see how I was getting along and update me on the situation. He...he says that Marvin seems afraid now. And horrible as that is, that...may have given me an idea.
Perhaps this doesn’t follow the rules. He never does, not even if the rules are his own. But if there is one thing about him that remains constant, it is pain and fear. If Marvin was having one of those, I believe the term is “panic attack”s, then maybe, with how close he is, that was enough? Enough to step in? But it couldn’t have been very deep. What works fast? Think, Jameson, think, think, think
I am a fool. I forgot about overwhelming. Wherein something or someone overwhelms a subject with one single emotion, and uses that to get the subject to do as told. Usually, that is happiness or contentment, but of course he would use fear. On the surface level, overwhelmed subjects act similarly to a thrall, except thralls are truly empty and the overwhelmed feel nothing except one emotion.
The way to fix this is to help the subject feel something beside this. That may be difficult if he is trying to attack whoever is in sight.
But...I have a plan.
Wish me luck.

Twisted 17 - Mind Games [Spencer Reid x Reader]
A.N.: Thank you so much for your wonderful support my loves! Here’s the next chapter, I hope you will like it as well, and please let me know what you think of it! ❤❤ Ily, kisses! ❤❤❤
Series Masterlist
Warnings: Murder, serial killers, violence, manipulation, mentions of sex, drinking, smoking, angst.
Word Count: 4700
Summary: Love demands sacrifices.
Not even once in your life had you ever imagined yourself in handcuffs, in an interrogation room on the wrong side of the table.
You weren’t even at the FBI headquarters though. The police had taken you to the station after the hospital, taking a blood sample and your fingerprints, then they had handcuffed you and left you there with a glass of water.
Of course they suspected you. Of course they thought you had murdered him.
Murder was your father’s legacy, after all.
You traced the handcuffs over your wrists, already feeling the bruises forming there. The shock still hadn’t worn off but you were starting to think it was a good thing. It felt as if you were watching all of this from behind some kind of glass window, perfectly aware of every single emotion but unable to actually feel them.
Spencer had said when you felt threatened, your body produced nervous energy, some sort of a fight or flight reaction but for once you weren’t trying to do any of that.
You just sat there, completely frozen.
“You look calm,” the police officer spoke, making you look up, trying to ignore the faint yelling coming from outside, possibly from the end of the hall.
“I’m sorry?”
“Most people would be traumatized if this happened to them, they’d be crying, shaking…” he motioned at you, “But look at you. Still as a statue. You look pretty calm.”
“Would you rather if I were crying?”
“I’d rather if you were acting like a human being,” he said, “Why are you so calm?”
Why were you so calm?
Because your mother had taught you this much. Showing emotion when you were afraid meant weakness.
“My father was a serial killer,” you stated, looking him dead in the eye, “I’ve had a complicated childhood.”
“Yeah, I’d say…” he leaned in slightly, “You know, I’ve watched that documentary about your father. His interviews too.”
You raised your brows as he sniffled, trying to look like he was nonchalant about this whole situation.
“And I’ve spent sixteen years on this job,” he said, “After a while, you don’t even need anyone to speak for you to know what they’ve done. It’s all in their eyes and little girl,” he clicked his tongue, “There’s nothing behind your eyes but ice and death.”
You couldn’t cry. You wouldn’t cry. Not in front of people, not even if they tried to kill you. No matter how much they tried to hurt you-
No emotions.
“Impressive,” you managed to say, “Very poetic. Have you ever considered changing your career?”
“You know what I think?”
“I’m sure you’re about to enlighten me.”
“I think you wanted to follow your father’s footsteps,” he said, “I think you killed Anthony, and all those other people. It’s not even your fault, is it? Some people are just born broken.”
That was more than enough to make your eyes snap up to his and you could feel the lump in your throat but you bit your tongue so hard that you swallowed blood, making sure to keep your expression still.
“Nothing to say?”
“You’ve already decided what to think of me,” you said, “And I already told you what happened. What more do you want to hear?”
“Right,” he scoffed, taking a look at the file in front of him, “You went to bed around 12, didn’t wake up whole night, when you woke up you found him like that. Lying in a pool of his own blood, in your kitchen.”
“You don’t look like a whiskey girl.” an unfamiliar voice made you turn your head and you lowered your glass, tilting your head. The guy smiled at you, and stole a look at the whiskey glass you had put on the bar.
“Yeah?” you asked, “What girl am I then? If you’re such an expert?”
He thought for a moment, “Hmm, wine?”
“Depends on the occasion.”
“What kind of an occasion does whiskey call for?”
“Apparently an occasion for meeting guys with bad pick-up lines.”
He let out a chuckle, “Yeah, I swear I’m normally smoother than this.”
“I would hope so,” you grinned, and offered your hand, “Y/N.”
“Anthony.”
“But you failed to mention the part you texted him to come to your apartment.”
“I didn’t text anyone.”
“We have your phone Y/N.”
“I didn’t text anyone,” you repeated, “Someone must’ve drugged me and taken my phone, the same person who killed him, the same person who obviously broke into my apartment.”
“How convenient.”
You clenched your jaw.
“I always wake up during night,” you said, your voice completely calm and controlled. “Always. I never woke up last night, there has to be a reason for that.”
“If you’ve been drugged, it will come up on the blood tests.”
“Good.”
“While we wait for that,” he said, “Why don’t we go over what you did last night?”
You took a deep breath, “I woke up,” you said “Went to work. I left work at 7 to go to my sister’s place. I left there around eleven, came home and went to bed.”
“Nothing else happened.”
“Nothing else happened,” you repeated and he sat up straighter.
“Okay. Well just so you know, Dr. Spencer Reid—” he started and your head shot up, your heart slamming against your chest, “He is giving us his professional opinion at the moment, about this case and what might have really happened this morning. Do you have anything you want to change in your story before he’s finished?”
You gawked at him, blinking a couple of times before you turned your head to look at the one-way mirror on the wall.
The BAU was there, behind the mirror.
“….They came back?”
“We’ve sent them the report, yes. They landed an hour ago.”
It was as if somebody was trying to claw your stomach out of your body as you stared at your reflection in the mirror, trying to ignore the burning behind your eyes before you turned to the officer.
“I don’t have anything to change,” you managed to keep your voice stable, “It was a terrible thing, it definitely was but I didn’t do it.”
Someone knocked on the mirror, making you and the officer look that way before he pushed his chair back and left the interrogation room. You closed your eyes for a moment, focusing on your breathing through the blinding headache but opened your eyes when the door opened again.
Luke.
He offered you a small smile and pulled himself a chair.
“Hi.”
“Hello,” you swallowed the lump in your throat, sitting up with your back straight, your hands clasped.
“You okay?”
“I’m fine,” you stole a look at the one-way mirror, “Is he there?”
“Reid?” Luke asked and shook his head, “I had to basically wrestle him out of the hall, he’s…he’s not allowed here. Conflict of interest. He’s giving his statement at the end of the hall as we speak.”
You nodded, digging your fingernails into your palms. “Okay.”
“He also called your sister on our way here. Couldn’t reach her, but left a message. Listen, he can’t request it on your behalf, but you need to ask for a lawyer.”
“I didn’t kill Anthony.”
“I didn’t ask if you killed him, I’m saying you need to ask for a lawyer.”
“Does he think I did it?” you asked and Luke shook his head again.
“No,” he said, “But it doesn’t matter what anyone else believes at this point, Y/N. Ask for a lawyer.”
You kept your back straight, rolling your shoulders. “If Spencer left a message to Mina, she’s coming.”
“Is she a defense lawyer?”
“No but she knows a lot of them.”
He took a deep breath and put the bottle of your pills on the desk, “The officers also found this.”
You tried your hardest to focus, moving your wrists to help with the soreness of the handcuffs. “They’re prescribed.”
“I can see that. The side effects say confusion?”
You arched a brow, “I’m sorry, do I sound confused to you right now?”
“No, you sound way too controlled right now, I may as well have been talking to a robot.”
You gritted your teeth, trying to control the panic bubbling at the pit of your stomach, sending anger through your veins.
“I’m not confused,” you stated, “Besides, I haven’t been taking them lately.”
He threw his head back, pressing his lips together, “God, Y/N, you can’t say that. A psychiatrist prescribed you something and you—“
“They’re just for nightmares, they don’t make you…” you took a deep breath, commanding yourself to stay calm, “I didn’t kill him. I found him like that. It was terrible, but I didn’t do it.”
Someone opened the door again and Emily Prentiss cleared her throat.
“Luke,” she murmured, “Spencer.”
You could feel your heart skip a beat upon hearing his name but kept completely still as Luke left the room and Emily and JJ walked into the room.
“You’re taking turns now?” you asked and Emily cleared her throat,
“Me and JJ are the only people in our team who haven’t spent as much time with you, so we figured it would be better if we interrogated you.”
“I didn’t do it.”
Emily pulled herself a chair as JJ crossed her arms, standing by the wall.
“Can you walk me through what happened this morning?”
You took a deep breath, “I woke up,” you said, “With a headache. I knew something was wrong, I felt it. My window was open, the front door was half open and my phone wasn’t where I left it. I stepped outside my room, saw the blood, went to the kitchen and saw—“ you gritted your teeth and clenched your fists, “Saw my ex-boyfriend there. Dead. Lying in a pool of his blood.”
“But you heard nothing.”
“I never sleep for the whole night,” you said slowly, “Check my blood test. Something happened last night.”
“We don’t have your blood test results yet, but there was no sign of any sexual—“
“That’s not what I’m talking about.” You cut her off, a shiver running down your spine, “That’s not it. Whoever it was, they didn’t touch me, they wanted…”
“What did they want?”
You shrugged slightly, “I don’t know. They wanted me to see it I think. My…my father’s crime scenes.”
JJ took a deep breath and pushed herself off the wall.
“And you don’t think it’s a little too convenient?”
You pulled your brows together, looking at her and she stepped closer to the table, her eyes fixed on you.
“Two victims so far,” she said, “The ones that we knew that were in the same place as you, they had some connection to you. That woman who was killed at the charity ball, you didn’t get along when you were kids, you turned her down as a client before she was killed, and now your ex-boyfriend ends up dead, in your apartment because you sent him a—“ she scoffed, “I’m sorry, someone sent him a late night text, inviting him to your apartment.”
“JJ,” Emily started but JJ held up a hand while you tried to wrap your head around it.
She had a point. Two victims so far had some connection to you and that was not a coincidence, it couldn’t have been.
“You think I did it,” you rasped out and she scoffed.
“I think you had something to do with all of this,” she said, “I think you’ve been trying to manipulate Spencer for something. The best case scenario, you were cheating, that’s why Anthony was there and something went bad, the worst case….” She shook her head, “You’re behind every single murder we’ve been looking into, and Spencer was just a tool for you. He’s my best friend, and if I find one single proof that you put him in harm’s way, I swear to God I will destroy you.”
Two people had ended up dead, and that was your fault. The copycat was going after people who had some kind of connection to you, and apparently no one except you and your family was safe.
The idea was way too painful to even exist inside your head, but it was clear as day. JJ was right, you were putting Spencer in harm’s way just by being with him, and if it were him, if you had seen him lying in a pool of his blood, his eyes wide open—
You dug your fingernails into your palms until it hurt before you managed to lift your head, that invisible wall which kept you safe from anyone and everyone who could possibly see anything you felt going up again.
“You…” you trailed off, your throat burning, “You don’t have to worry about that anymore.”
“What does that mean?” Emily asked but before you could say anything, someone slammed the door open, making you and the agents turn.
Mina.
“Are you fucking kidding me right now?” she asked no one in particular and stepped aside so that 4 lawyers could walk inside before the police officer rushed to you to remove the handcuffs off your wrists.
“You’re not saying another word,” she snapped her fingers, “Come on, we’re leaving.”
“We’re going to need her to sign some papers,” the officer said as Mina grabbed your wrist to pull you out of the room, making you hiss in a breath and she froze, lowering her glances to check your sore wrists for any bruises.
“What did they do to you?”
You shook your head silently, and something in Mina’s gaze shifted. You had seen it only a couple of times, including that time you were getting stitches after some girls in your classroom had ambushed you in the bathroom, and more importantly, you had seen that look on her face when Lily had fever that one time and you all had to rush to the hospital and the doctors said she couldn’t see her.
It was fire, similar to yours, ready to burn everything in its path.
“Don’t say anything to anyone. You two,” she motioned at the two lawyers, “Read whatever she’s supposed to sign.”
The lawyers approached the desk by the door as Mina put her coat over your shoulders, rubbing at your arms as you swayed slightly on your feet, trying to focus.
“We’re leaving, okay sweetheart?”
“Miss—“
“No,” When Mina turned to the police officers and the BAU team, any trace of softness in her voice disappeared, “You don’t talk. If you don’t want to get into even more trouble, you’re going to listen to me right now.”
The officer that had been with you at the interrogation room just blinked a couple of times, obviously taken aback.
“Do you have any idea what you just did to yourself?” she asked, “What you did to this whole precinct? Because allow me to explain, my sister was a victim in this scenario, and you tried to pin this shit on her to make her a scapegoat,” she shook her head, “We will be suing you for defamation of character—“
“Mina, your sister—” JJ started but she snapped her fingers at her.
“I haven’t even started with you yet, wait for your turn.”
“Mina…” you murmured but she didn’t even look like she could hear you,
“Where was I? Defamation of character because press will be all over this, intentional infliction of emotional stress and wrongful arrest and hey, to make things fun we will also be requesting the security footage in the interrogation room and if I see one very small slip of anything that wasn’t supposed to be said and done in that room…” Mina tilted her head, “Well, let’s just say that by the time I’m done with you guys and this whole precinct, the only thing you will be able to afford is going to be a typewriter and a desk.”
One of the lawyers came to tell you the document was alright to sign and as soon as you approached the desk, a door by the hall opened and Spencer stepped out.
It was almost excruciating not to be able to run to him. He looked as shocked as he was and he took a step towards you but JJ stepped in front of him as you grabbed the pen, ignoring the way your name spilled from his lips in a whisper.
“Oh, hi genius.” Mina called out, “Were you getting a glass of water while your team was hounding my sister or something?”
Spencer looked almost confused only for a moment before he turned to look at JJ who deliberately averted her glances from him.
“Mina, this is not necessary,” you croaked out as you signed the papers and she shook her head.
“No, this is very necessary, trust me. You need to show these people what you’re capable of or they will try to fuck you up, case and point.” She turned to Emily, “You’re the one in charge, I suppose?”
“I am.”
“Good. Consider this your warning, because the next time anyone in your team, including the puppy dog eyes over there gets any closer to my sister, we will be getting a restraining order for each and every one of you.”
You closed your eyes for a moment, still swaying on your feet and you hugged the coat around you tighter.
Not that you could do anything other than watching this.
“Your sister is an active part of this investigation, your father specifically asked for—“
“My sister is a civilian,” Mina growled, “She has no responsibility for this case, you do. How about you surprise me and do your fucking jobs?”
You took a breath to say it wasn’t fair, that it wasn’t their fault but Mina turned to look at you.
“Get in the elevator, we’re leaving.”
You were way too tired to fight her, way too tired to even stand there so you followed the army of lawyers to the elevator, while Mina shot the officers and the BAU members a fake smile.
“Pleasure, let’s never do this again,” she said, and got in the elevator with you, and you tried to keep your expression still, Spencer staring at you until the doors slid close.
“4 lawyers?” you managed to say, “I don’t think even Bundy had four lawyers.”
“Tell that to mom,” she said, “She was on the phone with a congressman the last I checked.”
You couldn’t even smile at that, but Mina let out a breath before pulling you into a bone crushing hug, making the tears rush to your eyes as you wrapped your arms around her.
“Never do that to me again, you hear me?” her voice cracked for the first time and you nodded slowly.
“I won’t,” you said, “I promise.”
***
It was as if someone had pulled all your energy out of your body. You were exhausted, you could barely understand what anyone was saying but you knew there was no way you could sleep anytime soon.
The blood test, as the lawyers had informed you, finally came back and just like you suspected, they had found traces of chloroform in your system. That and your team of lawyers combined were more than enough to get rid of any kind of accusations against you, so at least you had that.
On the other hand, the fear, the guilt, the sadness were still there inside of you, even if you felt way too numb to reach it.
You wondered if Spencer would have a scientific explanation for that.
Your mother had insisted you would never step a foot into your apartment again, she was already looking for a new apartment for you, one with multiple security systems and until that happened she had told you you would be staying at her house.
The damn thing was way too big anyway and you and Mina had grown up there so you figured it would serve as some sort of shelter.
If it even existed for you.
“Here you go sweetheart,” your mother pushed the tea cup towards you, “Drink it, it’ll make you feel better.”
“I’m fine.”
Kenzie heaved a sigh, “It’s okay if you’re not,” she said, “No one expects you to, anyone would be traumatized.”
“The real estate agent already sent me three apartments,” your mother said, “Huge windows, you love a bright apartment.”
“Mom,” Mina said silently and she heaved a sigh.
“It could help her distract herself,” her head shot up, “Y/N, you should go on a vacation! Somewhere far away from here.”
“Somewhere peaceful could be nice?” Kenzie added, “I think that’s a good idea.”
You and Mina exchanged glances.
“I heard Fiji is lovely this time of the year,” your mother said and you let out a breath.
“Mom, two people died because of me,” you croaked out, “I’m not going to Fiji for vacation.”
“Honey, you could use some peace,” she held your chin carefully and lifted it so that she could look at you better, “You look so…”
“I look like how I feel,” you said and turned your head when the doorbell rang, making Mina sit up straighter.
“Who’s that?” she asked when the maid walked in.
“Spencer Reid?”
“What?” you and Kenzie asked at the same time, your heartbeat getting faster and Mina jumped on her feet but you stopped her, shaking your head.
“It’s okay,” you sniffled, nodding to yourself, “It’s….it’s fine. There’s no point in dragging it out.”
“Dragging what out?” Mina asked you but you walked out of the living room and reached the front door, trying to ignore the warmth filling your system as soon as your eyes caught the sight of him. You stepped out of the house and he pulled you into a tight hug, burying his nose into your hair and inhaling deeply as if it helped him calm down while you just stood there, desperately trying to keep the tears at bay.
You had to do it. No matter how much it hurt you, no matter how much you didn’t want to.
No matter how badly it would rip your heart out.
“You okay?” he asked you, his fingers pushing your hair behind your ear, “I tried your apartment but I figured…”
“Yeah, I’m not going back there,” you shrugged your shoulders, “I’ll move out, it’s fine.”
“Do you want to stay at my place?” he asked quickly and you closed your eyes for a moment, every cell in your body begging you to change your mind.
You couldn’t though. You’d rather die than see him lying in a pool of his blood, all because of you.
“Don’t say that,” you whispered and opened your eyes again, “Please don’t say that.”
He looked almost confused, tilting his head to the side like a puppy before it dawned on him.
“Is this about the file on me?”
You shook your head and he took a deep breath.
“About today?”
“I didn’t send that message,” you said, “To Anthony, I mean. I wouldn’t…. I wouldn’t cheat on you.”
“I know that.”
“And I didn’t kill him. I don’t know if you heard, but the blood tests came back positive for—”
“I never doubted that, not even for one second,” he insisted, “With or without blood test.”
“You might be the only one,” you murmured and he paused for a moment.
“What did JJ say to you?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Because we had an argument on the jet on our way back here and whatever she said…”
You shook your head again, trying to smile.
“I get it,” you murmured, “She’s your best friend, she’s protective of you. That’s normal.”
“Yeah but if she thinks that you’re capable of—”
“I want to break up.”
You could swear the words burned your mouth, some invisible hand clutching your heart tighter and tighter as you willed yourself to keep your eyes on the street, because you were sure that every wall you built to keep your emotions under control would crash down the moment you looked at him. Out of the corner of your eye you could see that he froze and he blinked a couple of times, as if he was lost.
“What?” he asked silently and you tried to swallow the lump growing bigger and bigger in your throat.
“Y/N, wait—no,” he said quickly, breathing hard, “Listen, whatever they said to you today during the interrogation, if that’s what this is about—”
“It has nothing to do with that,” you forced yourself to say, crossing your arms and he took a step closer to you.
“Whatever the problem is,” he rasped out, “We can solve it, okay? Don’t do this.”
That was when it dawned on you.
It wasn’t enough to push him away. You had to make sure to burn that bridge so that neither of you could ever find your way back to each other.
“It’s not one of your cases Spencer, you can’t solve this one,” you muttered and finally turned your head to look up at him, your stomach churning at the sight of betrayal on his face.
“I don’t understand.”
“You—it’s—“ you stammered, trying to find the words, “It’s going way too fast, alright? It’s going way too fast and it’s going to fucking crash, and I can’t—“ you cleared your throat when your voice cracked, “I’m not going to crash with this, I can’t.”
Your father had taught you this way too long ago, when you were too young to even question it.
Stab the prey, twist the knife, pull it back and watch them bleed.
Stab the prey.
“I mean come on Spencer, we’re not in love or anything,” you shrugged your shoulders, “Should be easy enough.”
He stared at you for a couple of seconds, his mouth slightly agape and his brows furrowed, shock written all over his face.
“We’re not in love?” he repeated, “You…you don’t love me?”
Twist the knife.
“Do you really want me to answer that?”
His eyes searched your face, as if looking for any kind of clue that could tell him you were lying, or that it was a trick but for once, it was in vain.
You’d had spent years learning how to control your emotions and your expression when it came to heartbreak.
Pull it back.
“It’s not my fault if you’re in love,” you said, each word making you hate yourself more and more, “I can’t be held responsible for that.”
Stabbing yourself would’ve been less painful, you were sure of that but you knew you had to keep going. One last step, one last sentence and you would be done.
Watch them bleed.
“I never told you to love me.”
Then, silence.
You had to give it to him though, it took him faster than it would’ve taken you to pull yourself together if you were the one on the receiving end of this. He blinked back the tears, clenched his jaw and in a second, his gaze turned cold, exactly like yours.
“Yeah,” he said slowly, nodding, “You didn’t.”
But you had forgotten one small detail.
Spencer knew how to withdraw that knife and stab back.
You cleared your throat and turned around to get inside the house but before you could step in, you heard his voice.
“I was wrong.”
You looked over your shoulder, clutching at the straws to keep it together, “I’m sorry?”
“I was wrong,” he stated, his voice was distant and held no trace of its usual warmth, “Before, I mean. In terms of behavior and psychology, you’re exactly your father’s daughter.”
With that, he walked away from the house, and you just stood there for a moment before stepping into the house and closing the door behind you, that comfortable haze of shock slowly withdrawing from your mind like mist. That hand squeezing your heart twisted it in your chest and you tried to breathe, pressing a hand on your chest.
“Sweetheart?” your mother called out as she stepped into the hallway, then slowly approached you, “You okay?”
It was impossible to stop the tears rushing to your eyes now and a gasp escaped from your lips as you shook your head.
“Mom,” you whimpered, “Please, my—my heart hurts...”
She rushed to you and shushed you gently, pulling you into a tight hug and caressing your hair as you slipped to the ground and you buried your face to her shoulder.
Then the sobs came.

Robbie
A little drabble about Robbie the Zombie and his five dads for Father’s Day :)
A squirrel scurries across the lawn, looking for food. It picks up tiny nuts that have fallen on the ground and chomps away.
A twig snaps, distracting it from eating. It can sense something behind it. Something large and ready to attack. It turns its head and comes face to face with a large purple creature, with curly violet hair sticking out the top of its head and falling into its face, electrically shocking grey eyes, and a wicked smile on its face.
The squirrel drops the nut and begins running across the large lawn of the Septics’ house. The name of the creature in question, Robbie, growls and runs after it, standing up and hobbling forwards to chase it. For a zombie brought back to life only a week ago, he’s certainly gotten steadier on his feet.
The squirrel zips up the tree and sighs in relief. Most beasts can’t climb up trees, it’s safe here. Suddenly, the skinny tree begins to shake, and the squirrel looks down to see the strange purple monster slowly climbing the tree. The squirrel shrieks in alarm and runs down the branch, jumping onto the next tree.
Robbie, on his part, reaches over to grab the squirrel as it races by, only to hear a loud riiiipp and suddenly fall flat on his face. His limp arm clings onto the branch for a second more, before slipping and falling right next to the zombie.
Robbie howls. Between the shock of the fall and the shock of losing his arm, he is not very happy.
The front door of the house swings open and a man wearing a long white coat rushes over to the zombie.
“Robbie, there you are! I’ve been looking all over for you!” Henrik scolds.
Robbie continues to howl pathetically. Henrik notices the ripped off arm lying limply beside him. He looks up at the tree and puts two and two together.
“You tore your arm off climbing the tree, didn’t you?” Henrik asks. Robbie nods, still crying.
“There, there, let’s get you inside,” Henrik mumbles, pulling the shaky zombie onto his feet. Robbie allows himself to be guided back inside.
A lesser known fact about Dr. Henrik von Schneeplestein is that he’s actually good with kids. Under his proud and standoffish demeanor is a very kind and loving man whose soft but firm tones can calm even the wildest of children. Or in this case, a week-old zombie.
Robbie continues to cry as Henrik desperately juggles between resewing the zombie’s arm back on and stirring a warm pot of soup.
Henrik finally cuts the thread. “There. That should hold it in place.” Robbie whimpers in response.
“Oh, you’ll be alright,” Henrik soothes, rubbing his back. “Just don’t overwork that arm for the next little while.”
Robbie nods and takes a huge breath. “Sooooorrrrryyyyyy…” Robbie has picked up language fairly quickly, even if his speech is a little slurred.
“Well, lesson learned! Don’t go outside and assume your body is fit for climbing the trees!” Henrik says.
“Mmm hmm...” Robbie moans.
“I’m just surprised that the tree branch didn’t break under your weight,” Henrik says. “It’s not exactly a sturdy one.”
Robbie looks behind Henrik and his eyes widen. “Daaaad...?”
Henrik startles. “What? NO! We are not going there! You address me as ‘Doctor’, alright? Say it with me, ‘DOCTOR’.”
“Doc…” Robbie trails off.
“That’s better. Now what do you want?”
Robbie points behind the doctor. Henrik turns around just as a huge bubble of soup expands from the pot.
“SHIT!” Henrik rushes over and grabs the broom. “AVERT YOUR EYES!”
Robbie squeezes his eyes shut just as Henrik whacks the ballooning bubble with the broom. With a startling BANG, the bubble bursts and broth spills everywhere.
Robbie opens his eyes and bursts into wheezy giggles when he sees a drenched Henrik with a sopping broom.
Henrik sighs. “Good plan, bad execution,” he mumbles, putting the broom down.
The front door opens and Chase Brody and Jameson Jackson walk in, carrying groceries.
“Hello, Henrik! How’s dinner...” Chase’s voice trails off as he takes in the mess.
{What…}
“HAPPENED?”
“I tried to fight a soup monster,” Henrik grumbles, grabbing a towel and fruitlessly attempting to wipe soup off his coat. “The chicken soup managed to form into a big balloon and I made the mistake of popping it. Go ahead, laugh.”
{Oh, Robbie! Why is your arm bandaged?} Jameson asks, noticing the zombie wheezing at the kitchen island.
“Robbie snuck out to play and his arm fell off when he tried to climb a tree,” Henrik explained.
{Oh dear! That must have been a scare!} Jameson says with a laugh. Robbie reaches out for a hug, and Jameson happily complies.
Henrik smacks the towel down and begins opening the cupboards for cleaning supplies. He looks up. “Dinner won’t be for another little while, mind giving Robbie a bath while we wait?”
“Will do,” Chase says. He and Jameson guide Robbie upstairs and into the bathroom.
While Chase fills the tub, Jameson helps Robbie undress. Jameson tries not to wince at the amount of surgical stitches holding the zombie together. Whoever killed Robbie must have done a number on him before Henrik found the zombie on the side of the road, badly bruised and barely breathing.
As a treat, Chase dumps a bottle of body soap into the bathtub to make a bubble bath. Robbie giggles and begins popping the little bubbles that float towards him.
“Isn’t that just adding insult to injury?” Jameson says with a disapproving sigh.
“It’s not like Henrik is going to find out!” Chase says. He shakes the bottle again, only to realize it’s empty. “Damn, we’re all out. Looks like we won’t have enough bubbles…” He trails off when he sees Jameson close his hands around a bubble, and open it to reveal more bubbles.
“How did you-”
“In my latest magic lesson, Marvin taught me how to multiply objects,” Jameson explains. “We’re doing the simplest of objects right now, that’s as much as he can do, anyway. Wizard magic allows me to multiply bigger objects, and in larger quantities.” Jameson clasps his hands around another bubble and opens them as more bubbles appear.
Robbie claps his hands at the amazing feat. He grabs a bubble of his own and squeezes his eyes shut. He opens his eyes and his hands to find the bubble has disappeared. He pouts.
Jameson chuckles. {It’s not something everyone can do, Robbie.} he says, as he pours water on the zombie’s head. {Just a few people.}
Chase stares thoughtfully at the remaining bubbles. “I wonder if there can be too many bubbles.”
Jameson shakes his head. {Absolutely not! Henrik would kill us!}
“Come on, Jameson, do it for Robbie!” Chase begs.“If this does fail and Henrik gets mad, you can throw me under the bus! I’ll take all the credit! Please, Jameson, before the bubbles disappear?”
“Please Jamie…? Pleeeaaaaassseeee?” Robbie pleads, eye glistening with tears.
Jameson avoids meeting Robbie in the eyes, knowing how well Robbie has gotten at the Puppy-Eye stare. Why did he ever teach the zombie the trick in the first place?!
Jameson sighs, annoyed. “Oh… alright! But you owe me, Chase! Not you, Robbie, you’re fine.”
The two cheer as Jameson rolls up his sleeves and gathers up a few bubbles in his hands. He blows on them, and even more bubbles appear, floating about the bathroom.
“You gonna need more than that!” Chase says, as Robbie bounces, trying to catch the bubbles.
Jameson rolls his eyes and blows more bubbles. Robbie lets out a low moan, his best version of a squeal. Chase whoops with laughter.
Jameson wraps his arms around a hoard of bubbles and blows on them, spreading out even more bubbles.
“Uh, Jameson?” Chase yells. “You can stop now!”
{And ruin the fun? No way! Besides, I’m not the one getting in trouble!} Chase can barely read the sign over a mountain of growing bubbles.
“Jameson, I think we’ve gone too far!” Chase yells as the bubbles begin to squish him against the door.
Jameson does not respond. Robbie squeals with glee.
“Jameson?! Robbie?!” Fearing the worst, Chase bravely wades through the bubbles, determined to save his friends.
As Chase walks into the growing bubble hoard, Jameson squeezes out and looks around for Chase.
{Blast it all! Chase, where are you?!} He scans the growing amount of bubbles and notices the door. He sighs. {I’m sorry, guys! I can’t control it!}
He reaches over and twists the door knob before surrendering to the monstrous hoard.
Downstairs, Henrik finishes his cleaning and throws the dirty dishes into the sink. “There! And now to make dinner... again.”
The house rumbles, shaking the pots and pans. Henrik looks around in fear. “What…?”
There seems to be a ruckus coming from upstairs. Henrik grabs the broom and stalks toward the stairs. “Who’s there?! Come out and fight, coward!”
A sea of bubbles suddenly swarms down the stairs, knocking the doctor off his feet. Henrik screams and whacks the bubbles with the broom, only to be swarmed with more.
“CHASE! JAMESON! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?” Henrik demands as he swims through the hoard. “WHY ARE THERE SO MANY BUBBLES?”
“HELP ME!!!” Chase screams. Jameson whistles shrilly. Henrik wades through the mess and grabs Chase’s arm. He helps Chase find his footing.
“What did you do?!” Henrik yells. Chase rolls his eyes.
“See, JJ? I told you Henrik would blame me!” he yells into the sea. Jameson responds by grabbing his waist and pulling himself up, gasping for breath.
{Can’t… breathe…} Jameson leans against Chase, breathing heavily. {I might… faint…} Chase wraps his arms around the pale gentleman.
Henrik groans at JJ’s dramatic antics. “Where’s Robbie?!”
Chase gulps. “Uhh… possibly still in the bathtub?”
A screaming purple human slides towards them at breakneck speed. The men barely have time to react before being bowled over by Robbie.
Henrik is the first to get up, spitting bubbles out of his mouth. “Robbie!” he yells, standing up. The hall is a blurry mess of white foam. Where are his glasses- Crack. Nevermind.
Robbie glides through the sea on the ironing board, whooping and squealing with glee.
“Robbie! Get off the board before you hurt yourself again!” Chase orders. Robbie appears to ignore him as he flies down the stairs.
“WATCH OUT FOR THE-”
BANG. Robbie knocks the front door down and slides across the lawn. Standing at the end is a magician with a long cape with his arms out. The sled suddenly skids to a stop before he can crash into the magician.
Marvin the Magnificent sighs in relief and bends down to check the zombie for injuries. “What were you doing inside? Did Chase give you one of the kids’ flying sleds?”
Marvin notices the pattern of the “sled”. “Is that the ironing board?!”
A bubble floats by Marvin’s vision. His head snaps up. Bubbles slowly trail out of the house, washing down the lawn. Marvin gapes and Robbie giggles, clapping his hands.
“What happened?!” Marvin yelps as another figure lands beside him.
Jackieboy Man examines the mess. “Oh dear! I’ve come across loads of house fires, but never a house… bubble. Is everyone ok?”
“I don’t know. Robbie, where are Henrik, Chase and Jameson?” Marvin asks, looking down. Robbie points at the house.
“Are you saying they’re still inside?” Jackie asks. He runs inside without waiting for an answer, Marvin running after him.
Robbie watches the two men disappear into the chaos. Perhaps he should run in as well, since there are three men inside the house.
Robbie hobbles up the lawn and walks into the house. The only thing he can see is the shiny translucent white of the bubbles. He’ll have to use his ears and nose to find anyone.
“Doc?” Robbie calls out. No response. “Doc?” He slowly wades through the water, feeling around for the doctor.
“Robbie? Is that you?” A hand reaches out and grabs Robbie’s arm. He yelps.
“Relax, is just me!” Henrik says, pulling himself through the bubbles. Robbie cocks his head. There’s something different about the doctor, but he can’t place what…
“I broke my glasses when you bowled me over!” Henrik says, eyes squinting as he feels around. “Can you guide me to the exit?”
Robbie nods and walks towards the door. He pushes through the bubbles and emerges outside, Henrik in tow.
Henrik lets go of his arm and sits down. “Thank you, Robbie.” Robbie grunts happily and plops down next to him.
Jackie bursts through the bubbles, carrying Chase in his arms. Marvin follows shortly afterwards, Jameson clinging to his back.
“OK, that’s everyone,” Jackie says, setting Chase down. “What happened?”
“I tried to save a failing bubble bath,” Jameson signs weakly. “It didn’t go so well. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s my fault as well, I encouraged it,” Chase adds. “I’m sorry.”
“Soorrryyy…” Robbie moans.
“It’s fine, I guess the house is clean now,” Marvin says, scanning the mess. “I’ll fix it up.”
“You guys wanna go out for dinner? I found a new Italian place that serves the most delicious pasta!” Jackie says.
“Wait for us to dry up!” Henrik says, wringing his coat dry. “Marvin, could you fix my-”
Marvin snaps his fingers and the lenses mend themselves.
Henrik puts his glasses on. “It’ll be Robbie’s first time at a restaurant, you sure he can handle it?”
“Ask him,” Jameson suggests. They all turn to the zombie.
“Pasta?” Robbie asks.
“They’re very long pieces of deliciousness, Robbie! You’ll love it!” Chase explains.
Robbie nods his head. “Go?”
Henrik sighs. “Alright. Let’s get changed and go!”

“I know you still love him/her.” + your choice
Criminal Minds: Because of You / Prompt / JJ, Spencer, and Averey
Based on: 15x04, “Saturday”
Authored by: Rhuben
Standing side by side, JJ and Averey took in the sight of Spencer Reid. He was tall and gangly as he always was. But, he was in a sweatshirt. A sweatshirt. Ever since she had met him, she hadn’t ever seen Spencer in anything casual. Not even jeans. Except one rare occasion they tried hard not to bring up. Not even a t-shirt. Never without multiple layers. He was the physical embodiment of “dress to impress,” if his big brain wasn’t already doing so.
“Whoever this conversation was with,” JJ said with a knowing smile, “she’s put a smile on your face I haven’t seen in a long time.”
Spencer pressed his lips together, pursed them, opened his mouth to speak, and then closed it. He bowed his head. Then, his eyebrows furrowed together, and he looked JJ in the eye. “Wait, ‘she’?” he said. “I’m sorry, I didn’t say who I had this conversation with.”
Averey rest her arm on JJ’s shoulder, using her hand to cover her smile, scratching around her mouth. “It was definitely a girl, mate,” she said, her nose wrinkling as she smiled. “Clearly. JJ’s right, the only other time I’ve seen you smile like that is Halloween.”
“Because it’s the greatest holiday of the year,” Spencer said, lighting up. “It’s the strangest, most mystical day of the year. You get to dress up as whoever you want, watch scary movies, go door to door to get candy, carve pumpkins – you can take the time to remember those who’ve passed. I mean, it’s great. And…” He cleared his throat, his smile shifting to one side of his mouth, “and for one day, I wasn’t the weird kid.” His smile returned, and he shrugged. It was gone a moment later, a troubled expression suddenly appearing on his face. “Hey, so let’s go see the new baby.”
“Not so fast.” Averey stuck out her hand as Spencer moved to pass them. JJ followed her lead and the two of them pushed him back. She squinted, scrutinizing him. “What’s that look in your eyes?”
“What look?” Spencer asked.
“Spence.” JJ’s eyebrows shot upwards. She crossed her arms over her chest. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Spencer replied. “Just, uh, anxious to go see Simmons’s new baby.”
JJ and Averey exchanged glances. “Well, you know there’s only a certain amount of people they can have in the room at one time, it’s probably already too crowded,” JJ said. Averey nodded emphatically. “In fact, I remember when I just gave birth to Henry – phew – it just about wore me out.”
Averey waved her hand in the air. “Yeah, and, really how big is a baby going to grow in a few minutes, or hours, or days?” Averey asked. “They all look like potatoes, anyway.”
“Well, with women only being dilated ten centimeters, it’s not uncommon for people to think newborns are ugly,” Spencer quickly explained. “In fact, most newborns have a point to their heads because of all the pressure and the muscles forcing it out of the birth canal for hours.” He started nodding his head, slowly stepping around them. He started walking backwards, nearing the Simmons family’s hospital room. “It would even be more defined if the baby needs to be taken out by suction because the fontanelle hasn’t all fused together yet because baby’s bones are softer, to allow for more flexibility in the birth canal. It could take as long as four months or so before the baby’s skull is fully formed.”
“JJ,” Averey said, “You mind if I talk to Spencer alone for a few minutes?” She turned towards JJ, pulling her mouth to one side. She tapped her bottom lip with her index finger before she pointed at Spencer. “I think I know what’s up.”
“Sure, of course,” JJ said with a nod. “I’ll just be at the vending machines. I practically had Will buy out all of the Hot Cheetos in the hospital after both my pregnancies.”
“Ooh, if they have any Cheese Curls, get some for me, please?” Averey asked, giving JJ a toothy, pleading smile, clasping her hands together.
“You’ve got it.”
“You know, it’s been found that the chemicals that make the spicy powder on Flaming Hot Cheetos has been linked to many hospital visits,” Spencer said. JJ lifted her eyebrows, giving him a close-lipped smile as she turned away from him, clicking her tongue as she did so. “It can lead to ulcers, intestinal erosion, and gastritis.”
“Spencer, sit down,” Averey said, putting a hand to her forehead. “I know what you’re doing.”
“Hmm?” A confused look crossed Spencer’s face. “What?” He used his thumb to point over his shoulder. He pulled is lips downwards in the corners. Widened his eyes in innocence. “I’m just going to see the baby. And saving JJ from severe abdominal pain.”
“Right. Fair go, Spencer, but you’ll have plenty of time for Matt and Kristy to pawn the baby off on you,” Averey said, swinging her arm in a circle, pointing towards the empty seats in the waiting room. “You can help accelerate her reading level, teach her the wonders of the world, and all of that. She’ll be graduating secondary in no time. And if a little pain is a result of those Hot Cheetos, I’m sure JJ will enjoy herself in the meantime.” She pointed to an empty chair. “Sit.”
Spencer darted his eyes back and forth before doing as he was told. Lowering himself into a hard, plastic seat, he placed his hands on his knees, drumming his fingertips on his kneecaps.
“Spencer, you don’t have to beat yourself up for enjoying a conversation with a woman,” Averey said.
“I-I’m not,” Spencer said. He stopped tapping and rubbed his hands on his thighs before clasping his hands together.
“Ok.” Averey let out a soft sigh before leaning forward in her seat. “Maeve wouldn’t want you to hold yourself back from being happy.”
“I’m not doing that, either.”
“Then why are you still here?” Averey asked. Spencer looked startled, his face scrunching into a look of confusion. She tilted her head to the side, holding it up with her index finger, elbow resting on the arm rest of her chair. “Mate, your face was lit up like a Jack O’Latern when you walked in here. Just because you spent the afternoon talking to someone you just met. Why aren’t you still talking with her?” She didn’t give him a chance to answer. “It wasn’t easy for me to feel like I was ready to start dating after Noel died. I felt like I was cheating on him in a way.”
Spencer blinked. He swallowed. Sat up straight in his seat. “You did?” he asked quietly.
“Yeah. It sucked,” Averey said bluntly. “How do you not feel like you’re doing something wrong? I thought Noel would be the only bloke I’d ever spend the rest of my life with. It felt weird to find out I could have the same strong feelings for someone else. Anyone else.”
Spencer bowed his head for a moment, before looking back up at Averey. “Maeve made me feel like I was normal,” Spencer replied. “Even when I worried I was having a psychotic break. She made me feel like I wasn’t weird for knowing so much, because she was intelligent, too.”
“Being an intellectual isn’t weird, Spencer,” Averey reminded him, “it’s who you are.”
“That’s what I mean,” Spencer said, his voice cracking slightly, “Maeve made me feel…like me.”
“Believe me,” Averey said, slowly blinking, “I know the feeling.” She watched as Spencer’s eyebrows pulled towards each other in the cute confused face he always made. She cleared her throat, leaning forward in her seat to rest her forearms on her knees. “Does this other girl give you that same feeling?”
“Well,” a thoughtful look came across Spencer’s face, “my therapist asked me to have a normal conversation with someone today. And we did. We—we had a nice conversation. Not about work.” Averey lifted an eyebrow. “Well, maybe a little bit. But we also talked about everything else.” He blinked. “And then she pushed me into the sprinklers.”
Averey snapped her fingers. “That explains the civvies,” she said with a smile.
“Yeah, and then I carried her through the sprinklers in retaliation,” Spencer said with a nod. A sly smile slowly spread across Averey’s face. “She was talking about decency and then turned right around and did something not decent.”
“So, you were flirting?”
“What? No, I was…”
“Flirting.” Slack jawed, Spencer’s gaze darted around the room from object to object. Averey hid her smile, and a small laugh, behind her hand as she watched him. “You know all Maeve wanted was for you to be happy,” she said as soon as she managed to get control over her laughter.
“I was happy with her,” Spencer replied.
“True,” Averey agreed. “But who said you could only have one thing, or in this case, one person in your life to make you happy?” She leaned forward and gently hit Spencer’s knee with her hand. “I know you still love her but take it from someone who’s done this; don’t ever let your happiness be determined by one person. No one’s asking you to forget Maeve. And knowing that you have an eidetic memory, I reckon you never could, anyway.”
“Thomas Merton,” Spencer whispered with a smile.
Averey’s nose wrinkled as she did a double take. “Who?”
“Maeve knows,” Spencer replied. His smile widened.
JJ slowed her footsteps as she neared them, arms filled with bags of snack foods. “Is it ok for me to come back?” she asked, making a show of extending her footsteps. “Everything ok over here?”
“I don’t know,” Averey said, slouching in her chair, albeit with a grin, “with a big brain like that, it’s hard to know if it’ll understand such simple topics.”
“We’re ok,” Spencer said to JJ.
“Good,” JJ replied. “So now you can get out of here.”
“But…” Spencer grabbed the arm rests of his chair and lifted himself to his feet. “I still haven’t seen the baby.”
“She’ll still be a baby whenever you see her,” JJ replied, handing Averey a bag of Cheese Curls (“Yay!” Averey cheered, grabbing the pack and hugging it to her chest). “Matt will understand.” She fixed Spencer with a hard stare. “Go, Spencer.”
“Run if you have to,” Averey added.
Spencer lifted himself up and stopped part way between standing and sitting; an odd squat. “But, maybe I should—”
“Go,” both girls said in unison.
With that, Spencer jumped to his feet and ran out of the hospital wing. “Oh my gosh,” JJ whispered, sitting down next to Averey. She set the bags of snack foods down into the chair next to her before pulling open a bag of Hot Cheetos.
“Jayje.”
“Hmm?”
Averey used her hands to indicate between herself and JJ. “We both know that Spencer was able to skive the physical tests at the Academy,” she said. JJ nodded, popping a Cheeto into her mouth before licking the powder off her fingers. “But that,” she pointed to the spot Spencer was just standing, “was the worst running form I’ve seen in my life.”
“Yeah, uh,” settling the bag in her lap, JJ used her free hand to push her fingers into her hair, scratching at the back of her head, pulling her hair to one side of her neck. “I can’t explain that. Stick a gun in his hand, and he follows through with the correct form; finger off trigger, down at his side.” She lifted her hands and shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“I don’t think anyone can explain that,” Averey said, settling back in her seat, laughing quietly. She was silent for a moment before saying, “Hank Spencer Morgan for Spencer, Rose Mary Simmons because ‘it’s close to Rossi’, what do you reckon I have to do around here to have a bloody baby named after me?”

Undercover Love Ch. 26
Taken Away
Dark made his way into the control room, the slight, fuzzy feeling in his chest made it hard for him to resist the urge to smile as he walked over to Google and Bing. Dark knew what was causing this feeling and he knew that the one that was running through his thoughts was making him so...warm.
“That’s practically across the country,” Bing said in a soft whine, standing behind the chair Google was sitting on looking at the laptop Google had on his legs.
“It’s larger than our previous area, meaning a larger building and a larger building means more room, larger rooms, bigger beds, more-” Google stopped when Bing wrapped his arms around him.
“But I want to stay near here.” Bing protested, placing his chin on Google’s shoulder. “I really like the Septiceyes.”
“As do I,” Google admitted, moving a hand to hold Bing’s arms.
“Chase helps me make sure that you eat and speaking of-”
“Bing.” Google groaned.
“Good morning.” Dark’s greeting made Google shut the laptop unconsciously.
“Morning, Dark.” Bing greeted back, feeling that Google had tensed in his hold.
“Do you mind if I ask Google a question privately?” Bing was a little shocked that Dark had asked instead of using his usual ‘this is an order’ tone.
“No problem! I’ll go get us a snack.” Bing said with a smile. “Any preference, Googs?”
“Lemon squares?” Google asked shyly.
“Shocker.” Bing teased. “Want me to grab you anything?” He asked Dark.
“I’m good.”
“I’ll be back, lickety-split.” Bing giggled, giving Google a kiss on the cheek and then heading off towards the kitchen. Google waited for Dark to scoff or make a comment or something, but Dark just watched as Bing happily skipped away, a weird look of understanding in his eyes.
“What do you need?” Google asked.
“Could you tell me where you got Bing’s flowers for your anniversary?”
“Bing’s flowers?” Google was now very lost. “Yes, but, not to be rude or nosy, but why?”
“It’ll be clear later,” Dark stated.
“Okay…” Google held out the word. “I can give you the address.”
“Perfect, thank you.” Dark handed Google his phone, knowing that he would program what he needed into it to get him to the place.
“Chase said you’re the reason their lemon budget has doubled.” Bing laughed when he came back into the room, a plateful of lemon squares was balancing on one hand while he held a bag of chips with the other. “He also said that Dark’s the reason their sugar budget has doubled as well.”
“They’re both making me have to buy too much sugar.” Chase chuckled, having followed Bing. “I thought Anti was the one with the sweet tooth here.”
“Edward hates that they have such a strong sweet tooth…sweet teeth? Does it become plural?” Chase only shrugged to answer that question before continuing.
“You should hear Henrik, though; ‘I don’t care what you are, that much sugar cannot be good for you!’.” Chase started to laugh loudly, since his impersonation of Henrik had been terrible.
“That’s what Edward says about Dar-” Bing quickly cut himself off. “I-I meant Googs.”
“I’m heading out for a bit.” Dark said before Chase could fully catch what Bing had been saying.
“Purple chrysanthemums?” Chase asked with a knowing look.
“Perhaps.” Dark hummed and walked out of the building.
“Wait, what?” Bing asked.
“I’ll make sense later.” Chase chuckled. Leaving Bing clueless and Google even more confused.
x~x~x
Dark found himself standing in the center of a beautiful flower shop and the bright variety of colors surrounding him made him feel like he was sticking out like a sore thumb. He wasn’t really known for his colors. He also wasn’t known for flowers if it wasn’t just buying a simple rose to persuade a target to leave with him.
“Can I help you?” A young woman asked, her green apron with the store’s logo printed on it told Dark that she did work here.
“I’m looking for some flowers,” Dark answered.
“I hope so, it’s all we sell here.” The woman, Lindsey, according to her name tag, giggled.
“I guess you for me there.” Dark flashed one of his best fake smiles knowing he needed to stay fully level and polite if he ever wanted to return.
“Are you getting them for decoration or for someone?”
“For someone.” Dark saw Lindsey’s face light up.
“What’s her name.”
“His name’s Andy.” Dark had prepared the fake name ahead of time, just in case he was asked and making it so that if he misspoke, it was very unlikely that it would be noticed.
“Oh, my bad.” Lindsey rubbed the side of her head. “Is there a specific kind of flower you’re looking for? Color, type, do you want it in a vase or a handheld bouquet? Do you want matching ribbons for it?”
“I…” Dark was not ready for a storm of questions.
“How about we take this one step at a time?” Lindsey gave Dark an understanding smile before taking a notepad and pencil out of her apron pouch. “Tell me what you know and we’ll work our way from there.”
“Purple chrysanthemums.” Dark watched as Lindsey wrote down what he said, wondering for a second if she knew how to spell chrysanthemums without having to look it up.
“What else?” There was a long, awkward pause. “Hmm, tell me about Andy, maybe that’ll help me come up with something.”
“He’s a...co-worker.” Dark held his hands behind his back so he could pick at his fingers without being seen. “He’s eccentric, crude, loud,” Dark kept listing while Lindsey started to look a little worried. “He’s also...caring of his other workers, his family. He’s sarcastic, sassy, overly-flirty and always knows how to make someone laugh.” Dark was unaware of the large smile that was forming on his face and the slight chuckle to his voice. “He’ll act all tough, although he does have the strength to match, but he has a soft heart and he makes a mean cup of tea.” Dark snapped out of his trance when Lindsey squealed.
“I know exactly what to make for you!”
“W-Wait…” Dark wasn’t able to stop Lindsey before she took off. “This is a lot more complicated than I’d thought it’d be.” Dark sighed to himself, heading over to a display of flowers, spending some time looking at the colors before groaning when his phone vibrated in his pocket. “Yes?”
“I heard that someone’s out on a little trip~” Wilford sang into Dark’s ear through the phone speaker.
“Maybe,” Dark said, fingers gently touching the head of a flower and tilting it towards him.
“And that trip is about flowers~” Wilford kept singing.
“Don’t you have to go put your mouth on JJ or something?” Dark scoffed.
“Sounds like I’m not the only getting some Septiceye loving tonight.” Wilford teased, making a face that Dark could practically hear.
“Shut up.” Dark grumbled. “I’ll be back later.” He added when he saw Lindsey coming back over to him. “Woah.” Was all Dark could say when he saw the bouquet in her arms. The majority of it was the purple chrysanthemums but there were smaller white flowers in there, along with what looked like black sticks throughout the flower arrangement.
“Purple chrysanthemums, white calla lilies, and black colored twigs.” Lindsey described, handing the flowers to Dark. “Do you like it?”
“It’s perfect.” Dark was still in awe.
“You definitely don’t flower much, do you?” Lindsey giggled. “Register’s over here, I already have them ringed up, all you have to do is pay.” Dark gave Lindsey a real smile this time and after paying for the bouquet, he couldn’t stop smiling the entire trip back to the headquarters.
“What do you mean you don’t know where they are!?” Dark could feel the sudden shift in the air when he stepped into the control room, flowers hiding behind his back. Marvin was yelling at Henrik, eyes wide in fear.
“I mean I don’t know where they are,” Henrik said. “Chase has been gone since he got a phone call an hour ago.”
“And Anti?”
“Same case.”
“What’s going on?” Dark asked, walking up to the two, still keeping his flowers hidden.
“Chase and Anti are missing,” Marvin said.
“Missing?”
“We’re used to Anti running off with little warning but Chase always at least leave me a note if he’s going to leave.” Marvin was now beginning to pace. “What even was that phone call about?”
“I don’t know,” Henrik said.
“Why’s Marvin yelling?” Yandere asked as she came into the room with the rest of the Ipliers.
“We’ve checked everywhere and we can’t find either of them,” Jackie said as he Robbie and JJ came in as well.
“Bing, Google, try to hack into Chase’s phone and see if you can trace the phone call at all,” Dark ordered, snapping into action.
“Is that a bouquet?” Robbie asked.
“Later. First, we need to-” Dark stopped when one of the screens on the control panel turned on and showed static.
“A countdown?” Bim said when a timer showed up in red on the screen.
“A countdown to what?” Wilford asked. The screen underneath the timer went to static as well and quickly changed to a survellance camera.
“It’s them!” Marvin cried out. Chase and Anti were both tied to chairs and together, a thick, metallic object on their necks and by the blinking red lights, everyone could tell what they were.
Dark’s hand went numb and the bouquet fell to the ground, feeling as if his heart had gone down with it.
